Southampton have signed Poland under-21 international Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan in a deal worth £5.7million.
The Saints saw off interest from German sides Hannover and Freiburg to secure the 21-year-old centre back’s signature.
Bednarek has been representing his country in the Under-21 European Championship and was sent off against England in their group stage meeting.
He was a regular in the Lech side that finished third in the Polish top division last season and is tipped to be a future international.
Bednarek said: 'I am so happy that I could join a club like Southampton. This is the moment I have worked for that makes my dreams come true. It only gives me motivation to work hard, to show my skills and to help Southampton to get better and better.
‘I think it’s a good step for me, because I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players, so I can improve here. I think it will be a good move for me.’
The club’s vice Chairman Les Reed said: 'Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential.
'We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development.
'Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.
‘This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino’s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position.’
Meanwhile, Jack Stephens has signed a new five-year contract at Southampton after being rewarded for an impressive breakthrough season at the Premier League club.
The 23-year-old centre back played in 23 matches as the Saints finished eighth in the table and also reached the final of the EFL Cup.
Striker Sam Gallagher, another product of the club’s academy who spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, has signed a four-year contract.
Stephens excelled after Claude Puel drafted him into the team following Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending injury in January.
The England under-21 international, who has been with the club since the age of 17, is highly-regarded at St Mary’s.
Vice Chairman Les Reed said: 'Our philosophy at Southampton is to turn potential into excellence, and Jack is somebody who very much embodies this.
'His progression, and the level of his performances, was one of the real highlights of last season, and we have been delighted with his development ever since he joined the club.
‘We are extremely pleased to have strengthened our commitment with him, and we believe Jack can continue to improve here and play an important role in our first-team plans moving forward.’
Stephens said: 'I am absolutely delighted to extend my stay.
'It feels like home to me. I have really enjoyed my time here and am now looking forward to the next five years.
‘It’s a massive platform for me now because it just shows how much faith the club have put in me.’
