Born in Słupca in April 1996, young Polish centre-back Bednarek has spent the entirety of his career at Ekstraklasa side Lech Poznań, having broken through their academy ranks.

He made his first-team debut in 2013 at the age of 17, in a game Poznań won 2-0 against Piast Gliwice.

The 21-year-old spent the 2015/16 side on loan at Górnik Łęczna to gain valuable experience, making 17 appearances before returning to his parent club and becoming an integral asset at the heart of defence.

In the 2016/17 season, Bednarek made 31 appearances, scoring one goal as the side finished third in the Polish top-flight, while losing out in the Polish Cup final 2-1 to Arka Gdynia after extra time.

Football is clearly a passion that runs in the family, with older brother Filip currently playing as goalkeeper for Dutch side De Graafschap.

A boyhood Lech Poznań fan, he supported the club in the away end against their rivals Legia Warsaw in October 2015, stating that he wanted to experience an away match from a different perspective.

Internationally, he has played through all the young levels from under-16s for Poland and started every game of this summer’s Under-21 European Championship, which included a game against an England side with four Saints.

Bednarek: Why I joined Saints

Show/hide article…

The 21-year-old Polish defender has moved to St Mary’s on a five-year deal from Lech Poznań, citing Saints’ reputation for improving youngsters as one of the key attractions for him.

"I am so happy that I could join a club like Southampton,” he said. “This is the moment I have worked for that makes my dreams come true.

“It only gives me motivation to work hard, to show my skills and to help Southampton to get better and better.”

The Poland Under-21 international, who grew up as a fan of his former club, continued: "It’s hard to leave the club that you have supported all of your life. I have a lot of friends there, but it’s football. I have one career.

“I think it’s a good step for me, because I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players, so I can improve here. I think it will be a good move for me.

"I think it was the key for me to move here, that the young players are playing here.

“There are not a lot of clubs like this in the Premier League, so when I heard that Southampton is interested in me it was the only way I was thinking, that I wanted to come here, I wanted improve here and I wanted to be a player of Southampton.

“That was the most important, that young players are getting the chance here and can improve themselves.”

Southampton sign defender Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed defender Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan on a five-year deal.

The Poland Under-21 international becomes new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino’s first signing since he took charge at the club.

Southampton’s first-team squad will return for pre-season on Monday but Bednarek’s involvement in the Under-21 European Championship earlier this month means he will link up with his new team-mates later in July.

The 21-year-old was a regular in the Lech side that finished third in the Polish top flight last term, with the centre-back having represented his country at every youth level from under-16s upwards.

“Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential,” said Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed.

"We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development.

"This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino’s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position.

“Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.”

Bednarek said: "I am so happy that I could join a club like Southampton. This is the moment I have worked for that makes my dreams come true. It only gives me motivation to work hard, to show my skills and to help Southampton to get better and better.

“I think it’s a good step for me, because I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players, so I can improve here. I think it will be a good move for me.”

Southampton sign Polish defender Jan Bednarek

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed Poland under-21 international Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan in a deal worth £5.7million.

The Saints saw off interest from German sides Hannover and Freiburg to secure the 21-year-old centre back’s signature.

Bednarek has been representing his country in the Under-21 European Championship and was sent off against England in their group stage meeting.

He was a regular in the Lech side that finished third in the Polish top division last season and is tipped to be a future international.

Bednarek said: 'I am so happy that I could join a club like Southampton. This is the moment I have worked for that makes my dreams come true. It only gives me motivation to work hard, to show my skills and to help Southampton to get better and better.

‘I think it’s a good step for me, because I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players, so I can improve here. I think it will be a good move for me.’

The club’s vice Chairman Les Reed said: 'Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential.

'We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development.

'Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.

‘This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino’s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position.’

Meanwhile, Jack Stephens has signed a new five-year contract at Southampton after being rewarded for an impressive breakthrough season at the Premier League club.

The 23-year-old centre back played in 23 matches as the Saints finished eighth in the table and also reached the final of the EFL Cup.

Striker Sam Gallagher, another product of the club’s academy who spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, has signed a four-year contract.

Stephens excelled after Claude Puel drafted him into the team following Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending injury in January.

The England under-21 international, who has been with the club since the age of 17, is highly-regarded at St Mary’s.

Vice Chairman Les Reed said: 'Our philosophy at Southampton is to turn potential into excellence, and Jack is somebody who very much embodies this.

'His progression, and the level of his performances, was one of the real highlights of last season, and we have been delighted with his development ever since he joined the club.

‘We are extremely pleased to have strengthened our commitment with him, and we believe Jack can continue to improve here and play an important role in our first-team plans moving forward.’

Stephens said: 'I am absolutely delighted to extend my stay.

'It feels like home to me. I have really enjoyed my time here and am now looking forward to the next five years.

‘It’s a massive platform for me now because it just shows how much faith the club have put in me.’

Stephens commits to Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints have rewarded Jack Stephens for his excellent displays in the second half of last season by handing him a new five-year deal.

The 23-year-old centre half, who joined Saints from Plymouth at 17, became a first team regular under Claude Puel, filling in ably alongside Maya Yoshida after the injury to Virgil van Dijk and the sale of Jose Fonte.

Stephens, who is now on holiday for a month after being part of the England under-21s Euro 2017 squad, is now tied to the club until 2022.

Saints vice chairman of football, Les Reed, said: “Our philosophy at Southampton is to turn potential into excellence, and Jack is somebody who very much embodies this.

“His progression, and the level of his performances, was one of the real highlights of last season, and we have been delighted with his development ever since he joined the club.

Saints have completed their first summer signing after sealing a £5m deal for Jan Bednarek.

The 21-year-old centre half joins from Lech Poznan on a five-year contract.
