Pellegrino: I’m so happy to be here

Show/hide article…

The Saints boss visited Staplewood Campus to tour the training ground and meet members of staff, ahead of beginning work with the first-team when they start to report back on Monday.

"The first thing I would like to stress is that I am really happy to be here. It is a pleasure for me,” said Pellegrino.

“I would like to make the most of this opportunity. I am really pleased about how people have received me, how Les [Reed], Ross [Wilson], Ralph [Krueger] and everybody was really kind with me from the beginning.

“When I hear the desire about the future of the club and the goals they express for the club for the next season and in the next few years, we were completely agreeing and I quickly felt for me it would be a great opportunity.

“I am really happy to be in the Premier League, to be in Southampton. I think we can create a great mood to bond the players and the people that are working in this amazing training ground and I have got confidence to do my best for this team.

“I am really happy – this is my first feeling.”

Pellegrino, who flew in from his homeland of Argentina to get started, is also excited about the prospect of getting to work with his squad from Monday.

"I am looking forward to getting to know them and talking to them,” he said. “I am really excited for this moment, because I love to work and I feel that this profession for me is a vocation – I don’t feel like it’s work.

“I want to translate that to the players – try to enjoy, but working as best as we can while enjoying every single day.”

Gallagher: I am ready to get my head down

Show/hide article…

The striker, who has been with Saints since he was 16, has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal with the club.

“I am absolutely delighted to sign this new contract,” started Gallagher.

“Especially to get it all done and dusted before the start of the season because I can really get my head down and focus now on the year ahead.

“This contract shows the belief that the club have in me and I need to prove that now, which is what I am hoping to do in pre-season.”

The 21-year-old striker spent last season on loan with Blackburn Rovers, where he netted 12 goals in all competitions.

And although Rovers suffered relegation from the Championship, Gallagher believes the time he spent at Ewood Park was invaluable.

“It was definitely a big season for me,” he continued.

“I knew that before I went into it. I was delighted to go to such a big club and somewhere that had such a good training ground and facilities.

“I scored a few goals early on which really helped me out and gave me the confidence to settle down – the fans really helped me as well.

“I definitely thank Blackburn a lot for last season. It has helped me grow both as a person and a player. It’s a club that I have massive respect for.”

Gallagher signs new deal

Show/hide article…

Sam Gallagher has signed a new four-year contract at Saints.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, the 21-year-old striker’s excellent loan spell at Blackburn, where he netted 12 times in a tough season for Rovers, has been recognised by the Saints hierarchy.

They see a role for Gallagher as part of four striking options along with Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long, with Jay Rodriguez due to leave for West Brom for around £14m.

Gallagher had a breakthrough season for Saints in 2013/14 but hasn’t played for the first team since.

Saints vice chairman of football Les Reed said: “The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time. Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability.

“We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him, and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses.

“We are all looking forward to seeing Sam back here for pre-season and helping him take the next strides in his game at Southampton.”

New deal for Gallagher

Show/hide article…

The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on the deal, having returned to St Mary’s following an impressive season on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

Gallagher netted 12 times for Rovers, despite a difficult campaign for the club in the Championship, and he will now link up with his Saints teammates for the start of the first-team’s pre-season programme on Monday.

Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time. Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability.

“We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him, and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses.

Stephens: It feels like home to me

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, which will see him remain at Staplewood until 2022.

“Obviously I am absolutely delighted to extend my stay,” started the centre back.

“It feels like home to me. I have really enjoyed my time here and am now looking forward to the next five years.

“It’s a massive platform for me now because it just shows how much faith the club have put in me.

“The club has helped and supported me for six years and I know that will continue over the next five years, and that was a massive reason for me signing the extension.”

Stephens made his breakthrough into the first team last year, after Virgil van Dijk was ruled out with injury in January.

The Academy graduate went on to form a fine partnership with Maya Yoshida and completed the campaign with 23 appearances under his belt.

“It was a brilliant season for me personally,” continued Stephens.

“I felt really confident towards the end having come in and taken my chance. I am looking forward to pushing on and building on that now.

“I think it’s important that I keep wanting to improve. The club keeps developing and improving, so I need to keep working hard to keep my place in the team.”
