Seven sign Southampton pro deals

Jamie Bradley-Green, Christoph Klarer, Michael Obafemi, Alex Cull, Ben Rowthorn, Siph Mdlalose and Nathan Tella have all agreed terms with the club.

The players, all of varying ages, will help to make up both the under-18s and under-23s sides over the coming season.

“It’s a proud day for them all,” explained Academy Manager Matt Hale.

“The key objective for a lot of these boys now, despite turning professional, is to be in that first under-18s teams at the beginning of August.

“If they are, or if they are older, then they need to make sure they are in that under-23s team when that season kicks off as well.

“That’s the next objective for these lads, and then they can see if they can get further on and in and around the manager’s plans with the first team squad, given an opportunity.”

Why Liverpool may be forced to wait until transfer deadline day to sign Naby Keita

Show/hide article…

Liverpool could be forced to wait until the final day of the transfer window if they are to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, given how Sadio Mane’s move to Southampton unfolded in 2014.

Jurgen Klopp is desperate to sign the 22-year-old as he sees him as the all-action midfielder his team needs, combining power and energy with a slick passing ability.

The Independent understands that Keita wants to leave Leipzig for the Reds but the Bundesliga runners-up have told the Anfield club that they must stump up £70m for him.

Leipzig have not publically made any noises that they will be willing to sell Keita, with their chief executive this week stating he found the situation “boring” and he was confident the club would be “immune” to any bids for the Guinean.

However, the Reds can look to the patience deployed by Southampton when signing current Liverpool forward Mane three years ago for hope that Leipzig’s reluctance to sell will be worn down.

Leipzig’s current sporting director Ralf Rangnick was in charge at the Germans’ sister club Red Bull Salzburg when Mane was pushing for a move throughout the summer transfer window of 2014.

Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund were among the names linked with a move for the Senegal international but Rangnick was adamant that Mane would not be sold under any circumstances.

However, Rangnick waited until Mane forced the move by refusing to play for Salzburg before he eventually allowed him to join the Saints on deadline day in a £10m.

Now the situation seems almost identical, given that not only Rangnick is making the same noises about Keita while in the position of power at Leipzig, but also that the midfielder shares an agent with Mane.

This could prove helpful to Liverpool’s cause given that the pair’s representative Bjorn Bezemer knows how to force through a move against Rangnick’s will – although there is no indication Keita will take the same approach as Mane.

So often players are reluctant to hand in transfer requests so loyalty payments are triggered but that is what may have to be done if Keita is to force through a move to Anfield and achieve the big-club move he wants this summer.

Austin on gruelling start to pre-season

Show/hide article…

The Saints striker was back at Staplewood today for another demanding day of tests, including the dreaded yo-yo.

“Yesterday was alright but today was tough” explained Austin.

“We did the yo-yo endurance test which is the norm, as well as a few other tests in the Academy gym.

“For me, I just want to stay fit throughout the season and this is an important time to set the basis for that.”

Despite enjoying some time away from the pitch, the Saints squad have still had a strict plan to follow over the summer.

And Austin explained that, despite the much-deserved resting time, the players know the importance of returning in good shape.

“You have to make sure you maintain yourself over the summer,” he continued.

“You need that break both physically and mentally, but you have to keep ticking over to come back and do the yo-yo.

"It’s the same every year, it’s tough. But you know the international lads have been playing pretty much the whole way through June, so you have to be ready.”

Saints set to announce Mauricio Pellegrino’s backroom team, with Eric Black staying on

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will announce his backroom team before Saints head off to Austria for the first of two pre-season trips on Monday.

The Daily Echo understands Eric Black will be staying on at St Mary’s as a first-team coach, while Pellegrino has also selected two of his own personnel to join him at the club.

Black was assistant manager to Claude Puel last term but after the Frenchman was sacked and replaced with Pellegrino, his future was very much uncertain.

But, while Puel’s first-team coach Pascal Plancque will depart, Black, 53, is set to remain in the dugout next term.

Saints feel the Scotsman, who is said to be popular among the players, can offer support to Pellegrino as he settles in to his first management job in the Premier League, as he did for Puel.

Black’s familiarity with the current squad and experience of English football is viewed as highly valuable.

Dave Watson will also remain in his role as head of goalkeeping.

The 43-year-old has been a permanent fixture of Saints’ backroom team since 2014, having been appointed in his current role when Ronald Koeman arrived at St Mary’s.

Pellegrino’s backroom team will be announced before the end of the week, with details and paperwork being finalised, and then Saints will head off to Austria as pre-season really gets under way.

On the week-long trip, they will be playing one game alongside an intensive training camp.

The club will then return to play a friendly at Brentford on July 22, before heading to France two days later.

Saints will be revealing friendly matches for their trips to the continent imminently.

The majority of the team returned on Monday for early fitness testing, while those who have been, or still are, on international duty have been granted extended leave to recuperate.

Those who have been on international duty will, for the most part, return on Friday ahead of the Austria trip.
