Liebherr resigns from Saints board

Show/hide article…

Katharina Liebherr has resigned as a Saints director following a major board reshuffle.

The Swiss owner will still operate as a director of Saints’ parent company, which acts as an umbrella for both the club’s football and non-football operations.

But she no longer has a place on the board of the football club itself, leaving major decisions and day-to-day operations to others.

Chairman Ralph Krueger, vice chairman of football Les Reed and vice chairman of business Martin Semmens will lead the club as part of a three man strategic board.

There is also now an operational board that sits below that, responsible for running the club on a daily basis.

Finance chief Toby Steele, legal expert Tim Greenwell and commercial boss David Thomas have all been officially confirmed as the first raft of directors to sit on it.

The moves are unconnected with potential investment in the club.

Saints have been the subject of strong interest from Chinese firm Lander, but things have gone very quiet once again with the ball very much in their court to complete a potential £210m deal with negotiations having ended some time ago.

Regardless of whether that deal happens or not, the new structure, which is believed to be part of the reason for the departure of former CEO Gareth Rogers, will remain in place, with Saints believing it will help them progress more effectively.

Explaining the rationale behind the decisions in an interview with the Daily Echo just before the end of last season Krueger said: “In the reorganisation we will not have a CEO anymore and we are not looking to hire anybody.

“We have an extremely strong, young, dynamic, very intelligent, well-educated group of operational managers.

“We will have an interim managing director in Toby Steele, who will retain his CFO role.

“At the strategic board level we now have a three person strategic board. That is myself as chairman, Les Reed will be elevated to vice-chairman of football, and Martin Semmens, who has been key in forming our strategy, in particular with commercial and the way our brand is developing, will take the vice-chairmanship of business.

“We will be the strategic board of the club and Toby Steele will be the connection as the CFO/interim-MD to the operational management, which is very youthful and dynamic.

“I think it will give people comfort to know we have that strategic board and the operational board, which is something we are developing the final steps in right now.

“We have built a foundation as a business, and like on the pitch we never want to let our guard down, we always want to look at ways to improve and to get stronger, and that’s what we are doing at the moment here internally.

“No matter the ownership position moving forward, this is the group driving the club forward, and this management team will stay intact.”

Find out when the Premier League’s crocked stars return to action

Show/hide article…

Pre-season can strike fear into players and managers alike — for a host different reasons.

Premier League stars must get down to some serious hard graft after living it up on luxury holidays, while bosses across the country hope to find empty treatment rooms.

Some clubs, however, already have members of their costly squads on the casualty list.

Here, with a helping hand from our friends at PhysioRoom , Mirror Sport runs you through the big names battling back from injuries.

Cazorla has been out for so long he has become Arsenal’s forgotten man. He has not featured since October’s Champions League victory over Ludogorets, when a tendon issue forced him off. The Spain international, 32, underwent surgery in December and will not be ready for the start of the new season.

Injury-prone Wilshere , 25, was enjoying somewhat of a renaissance on loan at Bournemouth last season before fracturing his leg against Tottenham. He returned to Arsenal to begin rehabilitation and hopes to be ready for the big kick-off.

Having missed most of the 2015/16 campaign with an injured right knee, Wilson was determined to make up for lost time last season. But the striker, 25, suffered a similar ligament problem — this time to his left knee — midway through the campaign. He is not expected back in action until October.

Chelsea’s mercurial winger, 26, broke his ankle in June while training with Belgium. Hazard underwent surgery and the Premier League champions hope to have him back in time to face Arsenal in mid-September.

Crystal Palace’s popular left-back spent five days in hospital in September after being seriously hurt in a car crash. Souare was initially expected back before the end of last season but there is currently no return date pencilled in for the 27-year-old Senegal international.

Bolasie 's impressive start to life at Goodison came crashing to a halt courtesy of a serious knee injury in December. The 28-year-old winger has since had two operations to repair his meniscus and cruciate ligament. He is scheduled to return in the New Year, but Bolasie believes he can be back by Christmas.

Welshman Coleman fractured his tibia and fibula during a horrific challenge from the Republic of Ireland’s Neil Taylor during a heated World Cup qualifier in March. He was initially ruled out for five months and is likely to miss the start of the season.

Henderson , 27, was expected to be out for just a few weeks after bruising his heel during training in February — but ended up missing the rest of the season. The Liverpool skipper should be ready to lead the team out for the Premier League curtain-raiser at Watford.

Gundogan , 26, has struggled with injury problems in recent seasons and his City career came to an abrupt halt in December when he picked up a knee injury. The midfielder sacrificed his summer break to get fit but City will be cautious not to rush him back too soon.

Rojo 's promising campaign at the heart of the United defence was cut short in April by a knee injury sustained in a Europa League tie with Anderlecht. The Argie centre-back, 27, is said to be making good progress but United have yet to confirm a return date.

To put it simply, Shaw has not had much luck during his time in Manchester. Two years on from a double-leg fracture, the England left-back, 21, overcame a lack of form and stinging criticism from boss Jose Mourinho to produce some of his best football in a United shirt last season. But ligament damage sustained in April has left him battling to be fit for the start of the new campaign.

In-demand Van Dijk has not played since picking up an ankle problem against Leicester back in January. The Saints initially expected the 25-year-old Dutchman to return for the run-in, but new boss Mauricio Pellegrino is now pinning his hopes on him being available for the start of the new season.

A long-standing hip problem has hampered Lamela , 25, throughout his time in north London. He spent the majority of last season on the sidelines before undergoing surgery in April and is now likely to be out until October after a setback in his recovery.

Rose , 27, damaged knee ligaments against Sunderland in January before an early return to training made the problem worse. The England left-back undewent surgery in May and may not be ready for Tottenham’s Premier League opener at Newcastle.
