Saints pick up first Checkatrade win

Show/hide article…

Alfie Jones’ first-half header was the difference between Southampton and Cambridge United on Tuesday night as Saints chalked up their first Checkatrade Trophy victory of the season.

The skipper’s glancing touch on Callum Slattery’s corner proved to be one of the away side’s only shots on target on a night where coach Radhi Jaïdi will have been delighted by the resolve and composure shown by his defence at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

The first ten minutes drifted by without too much by way of goal-mouth action, as Saints’ youngsters looked to get their Checkatrade campaign up and running in earnest.

One of the more experienced in a young Saints line-up, Will Wood, was the busiest red and white shirt early on, attempting to keep winger Medy Elito at bay.

The 27-year-old fired two warning shots at Alex McCarthy’s goal, before Jamaican forward Jevani Brown forced a more taxing save in the 15th minute.

The visitors, growing in confidence throughout the half, had a chance to sneak in front from a set piece, delivered meticulously by Slattery. The in-swinger dropped favourably at the feet of Ollie Cook, but the defender sent the ball narrowly over.

Fast becoming a set-piece specialist, Slattery once again took on corner duty in the 36th minute, and this time Saints made no mistake.

Skipper Alfie Jones darted to the front post where he bravely beat two Cambridge heads to the ball, and his deft touch sent the ball flashing past U’s goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov.

A goal to the good going into the second period, Southampton set about preserving their lead and striking on the counter-attack. And, a surge down the wing from Harlem Hale and blocked shot for Slattery aside, the second half belonged to Cambridge.

Piero Mingoia flashed wide with a first-time shot, Brown somehow fired over the top from eight yards out and Matt Foy nodded off target as the the pressure began to build on the Saints goal.

A triple attacking substitution from home manager Shaun Derry almost yielded an equaliser as Emmanuel Osadebe’s cross-cum-shot was clawed out from under the bar by a back-peddling McCarthy 12 minutes from time.

By then however, Jaïdi’s charges had ridden the worst of the storm and calmly reclaimed control of proceedings to ease home to the finish line.

A gritty performance from the young Saints and a well-earned three points.

Cambridge United 0-1 Southampton Under-21s: Saints show true grit in Checkatrade Trophy triumph

Show/hide article…

SAINTS U21s showed real grit and determination to beat League Two side Cambridge United 1-0 in their second Checkatrade Trophy group stage match at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

There was a general perception that the youngsters were perhaps bullied out of their opening day defeat to League One high-fliers Peterborough United in August.

But this was a demonstration of real character by the under-21s side, who overcame some early jitters to express themselves well against senior opposition, who may feel they could have imposed themselves more on this fresh-faced Saints side.

In the end, though, it was Alfie Jones’ first-half effort that was the difference, to put Saints equal on points with southern group H second-place side Peterborough and a point behind leaders Northampton Town, who they face in their final group match next month for the chance to reach the knockout stages for a second successive season.

Cambridge did dominate the second half but couldn’t make the breakthrough in front of a less than enthused crowd of just 480.

The low attendances continue to be something of a trademark for this reformatted tournament, which Saints won in 2010 under its former name, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The mid-table fourth tier outfit demonstrated how much value they were placing on the competition by naming just three of the side that lost to Swindon 2-0 on Saturday – although they did deploy a strong spine, despite eight changes overall.

It seemed mainly an exercise for many of the club’s fringe players to impress manager Shaun Derry, the former QPR, Crystal Palace and Portsmouth midfielder.

Saints named a very young team meanwhile, with only Alex McCarthy, the understudy goalkeeper to Fraser Forster, having come anywhere near a first-team outing.

The youngsters had to show their mettle straight away, having to stand firm during some early U’s pressure.

But it was certainly a half they grew in to.

The in-form Callum Slattery, playing in the hole behind striker Marcus Barnes, was particularly impressive, really making the visitors tick and keeping their quick-passing style moving.

Saints’ academy side have had a mixed start to the season with many of their more experienced players gaining valuable game-time with Football League and Scottish clubs.

The likes of Harrison Reed, Olufela Olomola, Ryan Seager, Harry Lewis and Sam Gallagher have all left to taste life away from the academy bubble on loan.

Without those more senior academy players, younger lads have had to step up.

And this was an opportunity for them to demonstrate their progress against League Two opposition here.

Martin Hunter, the club’s technical director has always maintained this competition, which has been highly divisive after its change of format, has huge value for his young players.

Some League One and Two clubs believe it is the beginning of increased Premier League influence on the Football League with the introduction of some academy teams in to this competition.

There were early nerves from this Saints team and for the most part the hosts were on top as the visitors settled.

But the first big chance fell to Saints, as the bounce of the ball caught the U’s backline unawares.

But Ollie Cook, the 19-year-old centre-back, could not steer a close range header on target.

Saints were starting to bring their brand of well-drilled academy football midway in to the half, attempting to get the ball down and play and looking to release Tyreke Johnson, 18, and Harlem Hale, 17, on the flanks.

United did threaten from Jeavani Brown as well as Jake Carroll, but former United loan man McCarthy’s goal was not breached.

Saints captain Jones took advantage of some very slack U’s marking from a Slattery’s corner to head home at the near post on 36 minutes to score what would be the decisive goal.

After a fairly innocuous opening to the second half, the U’s looked to level, throwing caution to the wind, but Brown could not fire on target from close range inside a packed box.

U’s boss Derry threw his dice on 54 minutes with a triple substitution and a change to a 4-4-2 formation.

It almost had an instant impact and Cambridge were looking for a penalty but Brown, the 22-year-old Jamaican attacker, was adjudged not have been fouled as he galloped in to the box on the right and dragged down before he could pulled the trigger.

Saints were able to show their swift passing in the first half, but the second half they had to weather lots of Cambridge pressure.

The trio of substitutes did start to have an impact for the home side, with David Amoo really pulling the strings, while Emannuel Osadebe forced a flying save from McCarthy with a dipping effort from the right.

Saints demonstrated defensive solidity late on, with goalscorer Jones excellent in keeping his team’s shape and the barrier up to stop the U’s from finding the equaliser.

The under-21s now head to Northampton Town for their final group game on November 7.

Jaïdi delighted with dogged Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton endured an aerial bombardment in either half from their senior League 2 counterparts but stood tall to deliver a performance of confidence and composure.

“It is a great result, and I am really proud of the team,” coach Jaïdi said. “We were on the backfoot for the first 15 minutes under the high balls but the boys stood up to the challenge very well.

“As soon as we got our foot in the game, our confidence grew, we lifted our tempo, exploited their weaknesses out wide and started to make chances. My only criticism would be that he could have used the ball better once we had won it back.”

Saints had Alfie Jones to thank on the night, the skipper’s glancing header from Callum Slattery’s corner the deciding moment in a tightly contested affair and it was a touch that had the boss beaming.

“Alfie made a great late run across the front post and connecting brilliantly with the header; it was a super delivery from Callum Slattery to set him up too. We’re strong on our set pieces at the moment.”

For Radhi though, “desire” was the key to Southampton’s maiden Checkatrade success of the season, embodied by a rock-solid defensive showing, particularly in the second half.

“Cambridge pushed us back deep into our own half at times but we showed great desire and team spirit to pull through the difficult moments of the game.

“Alex McCarthy didn’t really have many saves to make in the end and that is a credit to how well we defended, particularly late on. We didn’t give them any chance of an equaliser. This is great experience for us and I hope this consistency continues.”

Checkatrade Trophy: Tottenham knocked out as Under-21 sides struggle

Show/hide article…

Only two Under-21 sides won as their lower-league opposition enjoyed the better of the Checkatrade Trophy second round on Tuesday night.

In an enthralling encounter at Kingsmeadow, AFC Wimbledon scored in injury time to beat Tottenham Under 21s 4-3, while West Brom, Newcastle and Reading lost.

Sunderland, who included ex-England international Jack Rodwell, were knocked out after losing 1-0 to League One side Doncaster Rovers.

Of the Under-21 sides, only Southampton and Leicester won in the 90 minutes.

Defeat for the Black Cats leaves them bottom of Northern Group H and without a point, meaning that they now cannot progress to the knockout stage, with just one group game remaining.

Brighton Under-21s beat Oxford United on penalties to take a bonus point, while 10-man Stoke overcame Rochdale in the shoot-out after drawing 0-0.

Shrewsbury Town, the only unbeaten side in the EFL, extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 games with a comfortable 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion Under-21s, who included summer signing Oliver Burke.

Meanwhile, it was an evening of derbies in the south west, where Plymouth beat Exeter 5-3 on penalties in the Devon derby and 17-year-old Jordan Stevens scored his first professional goal as Forest Green Rovers beat Cheltenham 2-1 in an all-Gloucestershire clash.

Liverpool turned down Koulibaly and Spurs’ Sanchez, Klopp was focused on Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp was reportedly offered the chance to strengthen his defence with a big money duo

The Reds’ defence has received a fair amount of criticism so far this season, as Jurgen Klopp’s men struggle to keep opposition attackers at bay.

The German boss has leapt to the defence of his players, insisting the media are going overboard on his crop.

And according to the Daily Mail, Klopp even turned down the chance to sign then-Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly during the summer transfer window.

The former ended up moving to Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs for £42m and is enjoying a good start to his career in England.

Southampton’s Van Dijk still open to transfer

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk insists he has “no regrets” over his failed transfer request and is still open to a potential move from St Mary’s in January.

Van Dijk was left out of Southampton’s first-team squad by manager Mauricio Pellegrino after the Dutch international handed in a transfer request following interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City in the transfer window.

The 26-year-old centre back returned to action, for the first time since January, against Palace last month but he has again cast doubt over his long-term future at the club.

”Well, a lot happened,“ Van Dijk told Fox Sports. ”Learnt a lot, heard a lot, seen a lot and all that. Got some life experience.

”I‘m not sorry for anything. Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want me to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Van Dijk is currently with the Netherlands squad, who are in a tough qualification battle for a spot in the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

The Netherlands are third in Group A, three points behind second-placed Sweden and four behind group leaders France ahead of their matches against Belarus and the Swedes.

The group winners automatically qualify for the finals, with the second-placed teams entering playoffs.
