Virgil van Dijk sparks fresh speculation over Southampton future

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has sparked fresh speculation over his Southampton future after admitting he could leave the club in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old handed in a transfer request over the summer in a bid to force through a move to Liverpool.

Southampton refused to sell, though, instead leaving the player to train with the club’s development squad.

The Dutchman has since returned to the fray following his exile and made his first start for Southampton this season on Saturday.

But despite putting summer’s episode behind him, Van Dijk has once again cast doubt over his long-term future at St Mary’s with his latest comments.

“I’m glad I’m fit again and I can give up 100 percent,” Van Dijk, who has over five years remaining on his contract at Southampton, told Fox Sports in the Netherlands.

"I’m not sorry for anything. Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want me to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Liverpool ended their interest in Van Dijk in June after Southampton threatened to report the Merseyside club for making an alleged illegal approach, though the player’s latest admission will certain not have gone unnoticed at Anfield.

Manchester City and Chelsea were similarly linked to Van Dijk over the summer and could return for the player once the transfer window re-opens in January.

Virgil van Dijk open to January transfer: ‘We can see what’s possible’

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk says he’s open to more bids for his services in January after a turbulent summer saw him remain at Southampton despite multiple exit links.

A move to Liverpool failed as the Merseyside club were accused of tampering and then had to apologise to Southampton.

The player then submitted a transfers request that was denied, but Van Dijk told Fox Sports in the Netherlands he has “no regrets” after attempting to force a move away from St Mary’s.

“Well, a lot happened,” he said. “Learned a lot, heard a lot, seen a lot and all that. Got some life experience. But I am happy I am fit and I can give a 100 percent again.”

Van Dijk has more than five years left on his Southampton contract, but would not rule out another push to leave the club in the next transfer window.

“Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want me to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club,” he said. “Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Van Dijk did admit to some consternation while simultaneously dealing with the transfer saga, an injury and the woes of Netherlands, who have endured another disappointing qualification campaign.

Asked if he was frustrated this summer, he said: “Yes, when you are injured, it is never fun to be injured and especially not how things went on in regards to the club and with the Dutch national team.”

Netherlands have two World Cup qualifiers left against Belarus and Sweden, but they trail the Swedes by three points for a UEFA playoff spot.

That could lead to a final game against Sweden in which the Dutch must turn over a large goal difference to finish second in Group A

But Van Dijk’s teammate Vincent Janssen said Netherlands will not push for a high tally in their first game against Belarus to make up what is now a six-goal differential.

“Well, we just have to win it,” Janssen told Fox. "You want to be able to decide your own destiny in the last game and that is the most important. You cannot forfeit everything in order to force a lot of goals.

“In the end, it is about winning the game and if that goes well, than are the goals also important of course. But we have to make sure to get three points in Belarus than we start to worry about the rest.”

Premier League to discuss overseas money at London meeting

Show/hide article…

The Premier League’s twenty clubs will discuss a new proposal that would change the way they receive money from overseas broadcasting deals.

The league will propose that 35 per cent of international television revenue should be allocated according to where a club finishes in the table, with the remaining 65 per cent distributed equally to all clubs.

One hundred per cent of overseas money is currently distributed equally under the current system and each club received around £39m from the overseas deal last season.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are understood to favour a change to the current equal distribution of cash.

Some clubs with the highest revenue believe they should receive a greater slice of international money, in line with their global marketability and investment.

The other fourteen clubs met last week, and Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore accepted their invitation to attend and outline the league’s proposal.

Nine clubs presently favour the new distribution plan, with fourteen clubs needed to agree before any changes are approved.

A meeting will take place in central London on Wednesday and the proposal could be decided by a vote.

Sean Dyche, whose Burnley side are sixth in the Premier League, said: "Do I think it should be an even split? Yes, just for the reasons of competition.

“We know it’s an imbalanced competition anyway, if you make it even more imbalanced, and money rules the competitive element of top-level football, so if someone is getting even more, and someone gets even less, it’s going to distort it.”

Virgil van Dijk: Southampton defender to re-evaluate future in January

Show/hide article…

Holland defender Virgil van Dijk admits he could look at a move away from Southampton when the transfer window opens again in January.

Van Dijk has now been reintegrated into the first-team picture at St Mary’s having been training with the development squad after handing in a transfer request at the start of August.

The Dutchman had made it clear he wanted the club to take up the interest from Liverpool, who issued a public apology in June following suggestions of an improper approach for the centre-back.

Van Dijk, though, played in the Premier League matches against Crystal Palace and Stoke before the international break, appearing to now be back in Mauricio Pellegrino’s plans.

Despite the apparent reconciliation, the 26-year-old revealed during his preparation for the Oranje’s crunch World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Group A rivals Sweden that he may yet review the situation at the turn of the year.

Speaking in an interview with Fox Sports in the Netherlands, Van Dijk said: "I am glad I am fit again and I can give 100 per cent.

"I am not sorry for anything (that happened). Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I will give everything to the club.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what is possible.”

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic in September 2015 and, at the end of his first season, penned a six-year contract which runs until 2022.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk hints at January move

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has hinted that he is open to a January move after missing out on a ‘step up’ in the summer.

The Netherlands international was heavily linked with a move away from St. Mary’s over the summer, however, the Saints managed to keep the centre half.

"I’m glad I’m fit again and I can give up 100 per cent,” Van Dijk, who was touted by Liverpool and Chelsea amongst others, told Dutch channel Fox Sports.

"I’m not sorry for anything. Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want me to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino bolstered his defensive ranks over the summer, with Van Dijk’s international teammate Wesley Hoedt joining from Lazio as well as former Lech Poznan defender Jan Bednarek.

Van Dijk hints at January exit

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk has hinted that he might push for a move away from Saints in the January transfer window.

The Dutchman tried to leave St Mary’s in the summer, handing in a transfer request with Liverpool said to be his preferred destination.

But Saints stood firm and refused to sell, with Van Dijk, who was told to train alone while his future was resolved, re-integrated back in to Mauricio Pellegrino’s first team after the closure of the transfer window.

However, it seems a departure is still very much on the central defender’s mind.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible,” he’s reported to have told Fox Sports in the Netherlands.

The 26-year-old made his first start since January 22 on Saturday in the 2-1 defeat at Stoke City in the Premier League.

He made his first appearance of the campaign as a late substitute against Crystal Palace, and played two games for the club’s under-23s as he worked his way back to full match sharpness.

While the Netherlands international admitted he may once again agitate for a switch from St Mary’s, he insists he is fully focused on playing for Saints, at least for now.

“I wanted to go one step up, but eventually Southampton did not want to let me go,” he said.

“You’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.”
