Saints hope for van Dijk return

Show/hide article…

Saints are hopeful that Virgil van Dijk will back down over his transfer demands and re-join Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad this week.

The 26-year-old Dutch defender spent last week training on his own at Staplewood while his teammates were on a pre-season trip to France.

Van Dijk, who has five years left on his contract, had told Pellegrino he wanted to leave St Mary’s this summer, and his apparent lack of focus led the new manager to take the dramatic decision to leave him behind.

With no movement from his suitors at Liverpool forthcoming, Saints are optimistic that van Dijk has come to the conclusion that he will have to accept the situation and prepare for another season at St Mary’s.

Pellegrino has been planning on life without him, either in the long or short term.

Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida are likely to start the season as his centre half pairing.

Even if van Dijk does stay at Saints, he hasn’t played a game since picking up his season ending injury in January, and his self-inflicted lack of pre-season action has hardly helped the situation.

Pellegrino will speak to van Dijk upon his return to Staplewood this week in the hope of good news, and will then reintegrate him into first team training.

Saints have two home pre-season friendlies to come – against Augsburg on Wednesday night and Sevilla on Saturday – before the big kick-off against Swansea.

It is possible van Dijk could play some sort of role in those games if Pellegrino hears what he wants to hear.

While his teammates are likely to be forgiving, it will a harder to sell to get the fans back onside.

Van Dijk has always been a hero to the club’s supporters for his performances and his leadership.

However, his reputation has been hugely tarnished by this summer’s transfer saga, and the thought that there is the possibility he will still have half an eye on the exit door.

Quite how he and the club will go about trying to restore that faith remains to be seen, but first of all he needs to make it clear he is happy to stay and accept remaining at Saints for at least one more season.

Liverpool still keen on Virgil Van Dijk, transfer could go to the wire - Jamie Carragher

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are still keen on signing Virgil Van Dijk according to Jamie Carragher

Van Dijk was a top target for the Reds earlier this summer.

But Liverpool were forced to publicly apologise to his club Southampton for overstepping the mark in their pursuit of a deal.

Jurgen Klopp hasn’t signed another centre-back instead, meaning there is still a spot in the squad which could be taken by the Dutchman.

And Anfield legend Carragher reckons the Saints star may yet move despite the bad blood between the two clubs.

Premier League summer signings ranked at halfway point of window

Show/hide article…

Approaching the halfway point of the summer transfer window, around £1bn has already been spent so far by Premier League clubs.

Could this summer see Premier League clubs break the current record of £1.615bn from last summer’s window?

Romelu Lukaku’s £90m move to Manchester United remains the most expensive transfer this summer across all leagues, however with the recent speculation surrounding Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona star Neymar it seems this won’t stand for long.

Everton have been the busiest club so far, signing 11 players as a part of Ronald Koeman’s project to form his own squad. Meanwhile, Manchester City have splashed out the most money with a total of £203.8m spent.

However, business is far from being wrapped up yet; Jose Mourinho says he wants two more players, Alexis Sanchez’s future is still undecided at Arsenal, and Tottenham are yet to make a signing.

How do you rate the Premier League’s spending this summer? We’ve picked out some of the standout arrivals - have your say and vote below for your signing of the summer so far.

Barcelona’s Neymar to PSG: Imagining the domino effect on the Premier League transfer market

Show/hide article…

Neymar’s potential world record transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has the world talking - but should the deal go through, it could have a significant impact in the Premier League, too.

The Brazil ace appears to be nearing a £196m switch to the French club and that could have a knock-on effect on the transfer market here.

Below, we imagine how Neymar’s switch could shape nine summer deals involving Premier League clubs and players. Our transfer chain is hypothetical but it either involves players the clubs named have previously bid for or is based on reports by Sky Sports or national newspapers.

The 2017 summer transfer window closes on Tuesday, August 31, and you can follow all the deals with Sky Sports. We’ll have updates on all the big moves on Sky Sports News and across our digital platforms, right through the next month and on to Deadline Day.

Head over to the Transfer Centre now for all the latest news, paper talk and feature analysis, as clubs across the country look to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2017/18 season.

Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk’s future set to be resolved

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk will undergo showdown talks with Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino this week.

The centre-back did not travel on Southampton’s pre-season tour to France last week, after he told Pellegrino of his desire to join Liverpool , report the Liverpool Echo .

The Dutchman is under contract at St Mary’s until 2022 and has been told he must train on his own until he accepts the club’s position that he is not for sale.

The Saints squad have now returned to their Staplewood training base, Pellegrino is hoping that the £60million-rated centre-back will back down so he can be reintegrated with his team-mates.

However, if Van Dijk continues to push for a move then Saints will have a big decision to make with the new Premier League campaign less than a fortnight away.

Whatever happens, Van Dijk is going to be short of match fitness come the big kick-off. He hasn’t played since suffering a season-ending ankle injury in January.

If Saints are prepared to listen to offers for Van Dijk then Liverpool are prepared to shatter their transfer record to take the 26-year-old to Anfield.

Loan Watch: Lewis the hero for Dundee United

Show/hide article…

Lewis, who moved to United on loan this month, made two saves in the shootout to give his side victory at neighbours Dundee and send them into the next round as group winners.

United led at Dens Park through Paul McMullan’s first-half strike, only for Mark O’Hara to level for the hosts after the break.

Lewis then made a string of fine saves to keep the scores level, including a terrific one-on-one stop in the dying stages from Roarie Deacon.

With the match ending in a draw, it went to penalties to decide who would pick up the bonus point and ensure top spot in the group.

Lewis’s saves from Faissal El Bakhtaoui and Deacon proved to be the crucial contribution, as United earned the bragging rights over their fierce rivals.

Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool: Reds yet to make move, Southampton hopeful transfer is off

Show/hide article…

That’s according to the Daily Echo, who claim Saints are hopeful the Holland international has abandoned his desire to head to Anfield.

Van Dijk emerged as the Reds’ top defensive transfer target towards the end of the season and a big-money deal looked to be on the cards.

However, Liverpool were forced to officially abandon their pursuit of the centre-back after being accused of tapping him up.

Van Dijk told Southampton earlier this month that he still wants to leave for Merseyside - which saw him banished to train on his own.
