How last season’s Premier League standings would have looked using Emirates Cup rules

Show/hide article…

Arsenal won the 2017 Emirates Cup thanks to an innovative – some might say, plain wrong – set of rules.

Despite the Gunners losing to Sevilla, who won all of their matches in the tournament, Arsene Wenger’s side won the trophy because they had scored more goals.

Participating teams were awarded the usual three points for a win, one for a draw, but additionally received a point for every goal scored.

Arsenal thrashed Benfica 5-2 on Saturday, while Sevilla downed Leipzig 1-0, before the Spanish side saw off the Gunners 2-1 on Sunday.

All of which gave Arsenal and Sevilla nine points, with the London club picking up the trophy having scored three goals more.

Cue mild embarrassment when Arsenal had to collect the cup having just lost to Sevilla.

But it got us thinking: what would the 2016-17 Premier League table have looked like if these rules had applied? Take a look at the standings, as we count down to the number one club, in the slideshow above.

Targett: A huge week ahead

Show/hide article…

Saints have just returned from a training camp in France and now head into a pair of home pre-season games this week.

First up is a meeting with German side FC Augsburg on Wednesday evening (7.45pm BST), before Spanish outfit Sevilla are welcomed to St Mary’s on Saturday (3pm BST).

Targett, who came off the bench to provide two assists in the 3-0 win over Saint-Étienne at the weekend, believes a big couple of days lie ahead.

“I think it’s a massive two games,” he said. "It’s the last two games of pre-season for everyone to get more minutes and feel more sharp and put us in a good mentality going into the first game of the season.

“Getting a winning mentality early doors is very important and it will lead us well into the new season.”

Liverpool ramp up Van Dijk chase as Southampton make £12m Hoedt bid

Show/hide article…

Southampton are weighing up a £12million move for Lazio centre back Wesley Hoedt as they prepare for Virgil van Dijk’s departure.

The £60million-rated Van Dijk is due to discuss his future with the club this week after telling them he wanted to move on. He spent last week training on his own at Southampton’s Staplewood training base while the team were on a pre-season trip to France.

Liverpool were warned over their approaches to Van Dijk earlier in the summer but that has not prevented the 26-year-old from voicing a desire to move to Anfield.

Chelsea have also been monitoring developments but Van Dijk wants to link up with Jurgen Klopp.

Mauricio Pellegrino has been using Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida as his centre-back pairing and they have Poland Under 21 international Jan Bednarek to call upon also.

However, talks have taken place over Hoedt, another Holland international, who has been at Lazio since 2015.

The 23-year-old was a target for Southampton last summer while Middlesbrough, Leicester and Everton have also considered the former Alkmaar centre back. Hoedt is strong in the air, comfortable on the ball and a good reader of the game.

Liverpool are insisting Philippe Coutinho is not for sale. Jurgen Klopp once again underlined the club’s stance in the Audi Cup press conference on Monday, saying: ‘The word is ‘‘not’’ (for sale). There is no interpretation for that. There is nothing new.’

Barcelona are exploring all options with Paris Saint-Germain hoping to sign Neymar by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Hannover 96 are interested in taking Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic on loan but the Anfield club want a permanent £16m sale. The fee has already deterred Fiorentina.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has told Swansea City he wants to join Everton.

The Goodison Park club have offered £45million plus a player with young defender Callum Connolly mentioned in discussions.

The 19-year-old was part of the England U20 World Cup winning squad and can play at right back and left back. He had a spell on loan at Wigan Athletic last season making 17 appearances in the Championship and scoring twice.

Sigurdsson is keen for a deal to be pushed through so he can link up with Everton though Swansea remain keen to push the price to £50m.

They want Wilfried Bony from Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion’s Nacer Chadli.

Everton remain keen to add Olivier Giroud from Arsenal and have designs on West Ham defender Winston Reid as they consider options to cover for the long-term injury to Ramiro Funes Mori.

Everton are also ready to offer a new one-year extension for Gareth Barry even though the 36-year-old has the option of joining West Bromwich Albion on a two-year contract.

Marouane Fellaini may consider a move abroad in January.

The Belgium international is a firm favourite with Jose Mourinho though recognises the £40million signing of Nemanja Matic could limit his playing time this season.

Fellaini has a World Cup place to fight for this season and is out of contract next summer. Galatasaray have shown interest but he is not short of admirers. Mourinho said it was easier for Galatasaray to sign him than Fellaini when quizzed on Sunday, however, the 29-year-old wants more regular game time and will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January.

Matic completed his signing from Chelsea on Monday after undergoing a medical on Sunday. United believe that the £35m deal plus a further £5m in add-ons could be the last of their incomings for this summer barring a sea-change from Inter Milan on Ivan Perisic.

Watford have also asked about taking Timothy Fosu Mensah on loan but Jose Mourinho will make a decision on certain outgoings after the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, are continuing negotiations with Manchester City for Fernando and West Ham for Sofiane Feghouli. They also want one-time West Ham target Badou N’Diaye from Osmanlispor.

Tottenham are considering a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen full back Benjamin Henrichs though they are keeping their options open.

Henrichs’ representatives are understood to be keen to discuss a move for the versatile 20-year-old though he is valued at £18m by Leverkusen.

Tottenham have also enquired about Hoffenheim’s Jeremy Toljan but the 22-year-old also has interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham are continuing to monitor developments with Jadon Sancho at Manchester City after the teenager failed to turn up at training last week.

The talented England U20 international was understood to be disappointed at being left off the club’s tour of USA and is attracting interest from a host of clubs after hinting he is ready to leave City and turn down their offer of a professional contract.

Tottenham discussed Sancho in talks over Kyle Walker and they remain keen on the 17-year-old as do Manchester United and Arsenal among others.

Dortmund know they can prise Sancho away for a lower compensation fee than British clubs yet still provide competitive wages and offer a route to the first team.

Max Power could be allowed to leave Wigan Athletic for a cut-price £500,000 this summer.

The 24-year-old has been frozen out by manager Paul Cook after saying he wanted to play at a higher level following the club’s relegation.

Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday and Rangers are all showing an interest in the energetic midfielder who made 45 appearances for Wigan last season.

Cook, who is also willing to listen to offers for striker Omar Bogle, told Power that he would not be considered for selection while the transfer window is open.

Wigan are set to sign midfielder Lee Evans from Wolves on a season-long loan and, along with Scunthorpe United, are keen on signing Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney on loan.

Glasgow Rangers have signed Jordan Critchley from Queen’s Park on a two-year contract.

The 16-year-old was formerly on Wigan Athletic’s books.

Wolves are close to signing 23-year-old Brazilian striker Leo Bonatini from Al Hilal after he underwent a medical on Monday.

Barnsley are confident of completing a £900,000 deal to sign 22-year-old striker Mamadou Thiam from Dijon.

The former Deportivo La Coruna striker also has interest from his former club, who offered £9m last week. Arsenal want £13.4million for Perez who was the subject of a bid from Everton too last year before he opted for a move to London. Newcastle have also asked about taking Danny Ings from Liverpool.

Roma have yet to match Leicester City’s valuation on Riyad Mahrez.

Though the £50million-rated Algerian is interested in moving to Italy he would prefer a move to Arsenal while Chelsea and Liverpool have maintained a watching brief of developments.

Leicester will sign Kelechi Iheanacho from Manchester City for around £20million once a dispute between his old agents and new representatives is settled and the buy-back clause figure agreed.

Leicester, who also want to add another centre back, are still pondering a second bid for 20-year-old Coventry City striker George Thomas.

Fantasy Football: Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku proving popular

Show/hide article…

With under a fortnight until the Premier League returns, Sky Sports Fantasy Football reveal which players are proving most popular so far.

Harry Kane tops the charts as the most popular pick despite also being the game’s most expensive player and is joined by three Tottenham team-mates, while Everton players are also proving popular following Ronald Koeman’s summer overhaul.

However, none of Chelsea’s squad are included, despite Eden Hazard being last season’s second-highest scoring midfielder, while club-record summer signing Alvaro Morata (£12.2m) is proving relatively unpopular with just 6.9 per cent of buyers.

Here are the most popular picks so far…

After a breakthrough season with Sunderland, and a £25m move to Everton, Jordan Pickford’s Sky Sports Fantasy Football value has risen by a whole £2m this year.

However, that’s hardly put players off, with 16.86 per cent choosing him, nearly four per cent more than second-placed Fraser Forster. Pickford scored 78 points last term, largely through bonus save points as he attempted to save the Black Cats from the drop.

Kyle Walker’s big money move to Manchester City has paved the way for Kieran Trippier to potentially shine for Spurs this season, having provided five assists from just six starts last term.

Indeed, Trippier created more chances, completed more passes and won more tackles per game than Walker, so it’s no surprise 14.48 per cent of players have selected him.

However, Walker too is one of the four most selected defenders - featuring in 8.18 per cent of teams after his move to City.

His points haul of 141 last season put him among the top 10 highest-scoring defenders and players are backing him to continue that form at the Etihad.

Like Pickford, Michael Keane’s performances last season earned him a high-profile move to Ronald Koeman’s Everton.

The cheapest defender to return more than 100 points last season, 18.06 per cent of players have picked him this term, making him the most popular selection in our backline.

Plenty is clearly expected from Koeman’s backline with Ashley Williams, who helped the Toffees record a respectable 13 clean sheets last season, just edging out another team-mate in Leighton Baines.

Chosen by 9.61 per cent of players, the Wales international returned 127 points last term after also providing three assists and scoring another.

The third most selected player in the game, 26.9 per cent of players have chosen Dele Alli after he racked up 18 goals and nine assists last term.

Those contributions made him the highest-scoring midfielder of the 2016/17 season, returning 241 points, and also resulted in his valuation increasing by £0.8m.

Philippe Coutinho’s Liverpool future may be up in the air but, along with the Liverpool faithful, 21.22 per cent will be hoping he will stay and deliver points for their Sky Sports Fantasy Football teams.

The Brazilian has been heavily linked with Barcelona after scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists from midfield, although the Catalans will have to pay far more than his fantasy valuation of £11.3m to complete the deal.

Only Kevin de Bruyne (20) provided more assists than Christian Eriksen (18) last season, but the Dane has proven a more popular pick than the Belgian so far.

Spurs’ talisman, who also scored eight times, has been chosen for 16.33 per cent of teams after scoring 220 points last year.

Despite being new and unproven in the Premier League, Alexandre Lacazette is the third most selected striker so far.

After scoring 28 goals for Lyon last season, 19.36 per cent of players expect him to shine at Arsenal, making him a 6.91 per cent more popular pick than his new team-mate and last season’s top points scorer Alexis Sanchez (£12.7m).

Only Alexis Sanchez and Harry Kane scored more Sky Sports Fantasy Football points than Romelu Lukaku last season.

After 25 goals for Everton and a big-money move to Manchester United, 39.72 per cent of players have chosen him for their teams.

The most expensive player in the game, Harry Kane is also the most selected player in the game ahead of the new season - included in 44.65 per cent of teams.

The back-to-back Golden Boot winner was only out-scored by Sanchez on the points front, despite missing eight games through injury.
