Saturday’s FA Cup betting previews

Show/hide article…

Liverpool’s season is far from over but the swagger in their step has been tempered following a run of seven games from which their only victory was a 1-0 replay triumph over Sky Bet League Two’s Plymouth in the third round of this competition, after the initial match ended goalless at Anfield.

Losing Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations, Philippe Coutinho to injury (he’s now back fully fit after completing 87 minutes in midweek), combined with continued defensive vulnerabilities, have no doubt contributed to the Reds not quite producing the same kind of performances which saw them go undefeated for 15 games between August and early-December.

Wednesday night’s EFL Cup exit at the hands of an extremely well organised Southampton side was no disgrace, but a fully-firing Liverpool would have found a way through, while immediately falling behind again after coming from 2-0 down to be level with Swansea in their previous match was indicative of how low confidence has become.

So the chance of one trophy has slipped away at the semi-final stage, they’re now 10 points off the pace in the title race and Jurgen Klopp is starting to sound rather irate in his post-match interviews.

The temptation is clearly to get with Wolves in some form or other and punters haven’t wasted any time in backing the Championship side into single-figures, which still looks reasonable.

Paul Lambert’s men have a pretty indifferent record this term and aren’t quite safe from being drawn into a relegation battle, but several changes to the line-up didn’t stop them taking advantage of a shaky Stoke in the third round and that 2-0 triumph at the bet365 Stadium - Wolves’ first FA Cup win in six years - will ensure there’s some confidence in the camp.

Wanderers emerged victorious from their penultimate trip to Anfield, albeit back in 2010, and basically there’s enough to think the hosts are bad 2/7 favourites.

Victory for Wolves would obviously be a major shock and they’ve drawn too many games to be getting carried away, while Liverpool did look a little more assured with Joel Matip back in the team against Saints.

However, effectively laying the hosts with a small double chance interest on Wolves/draw looks as close to a free hit on the Saturday coupon as you’;re likely to see.

Four straight Premier League defeats around the turn of the year have left Southampton with a mountain to climb if they’re to better last season’s sixth-placed finish in the top flight but Claude Puel has galvanised his men, who have got back on track and completed an FA Cup-Premier- League-EFL Cup treble with a 1-0 victory at Anfield on Wednesday night.

They rode their luck at times but thoroughly deserved to progress to Wembley across the two legs and making the final of that competition having not conceded a single goal is a pretty remarkable achievement.

That run included a 2-0 victory at the Emirates, but it’s not hard to envisage this match coming too soon after their hard-fought victory in midweek and I’d expect Saints’ super-slick defence to come under intense pressure from an early stage against a well rested Arsenal side.

The Gunners have big games with Chelsea and Bayern Munich looming next month but can fully focus on FA Cup progress before returning to the league at home to Watford on Tuesday.

Arsene Wenger fielded a strong side against Preston and after it needed an 89th minute Olivier Giroud winner for the 2014 and 2015 Cup winners to emerge on top via the odd goal in three, there’s no reason why he’d change tack and not go with another decent starting XI.

The inclusion of Mesut Ozil and/or Alexis Sanchez might be asking too much but if either is involved I’d strongly fancy the visitors to wrap this up in normal time.

I’m keen on Arsenal regardless and a fast start might just catch their opponents cold.

Backing the Gunners to be ahead at half-time and full-time enhances the price to an attractive 5/2 (Coral), which is marginally preferred to a win to nil, with main danger-men Shane Long, Jay Rodriguez and Dusan Tadic all among the goals of late.

Premier League table: How it would look if goals from penalties DIDN’T count, Mourinho-style!

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho has once again stolen the headlines after refusing to accept Manchester United’s defeat to Hull in the EFL Cup semi-final.

The second leg resulted in a 2-1 win for the Tigers, with the Red Devils winning 3-2 on aggregate, but manager Mourinho claims Thursday’s match finished 1-1, as he refused to accept a controversial penalty decision.

The Portuguese boss said: "We didn’t lose, it was 1-1. I only saw two goals. I saw a Pogba goal and their goal, a fantastic goal.

“It was 1-1, we are still unbeaten. I think 18 matches unbeaten is amazing.”

This refusal got talkSPORT thinking - if penalties did not count in the Premier League this season, how much different would the table look?

Puel: Saints working on January deals

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are beginning to face a race against time to bring in new players during the January transfer window.

Claude Puel revealed that they are busy working towards welcoming new recruits to St Mary’s, but are leaving it late with the market closing 11pm on Tuesday.

A centre-back and a striker are high up on the agenda for Saints, although Puel stated that nothing concrete is yet to be struck with any potential new recruit.

To press home further the need for Saints to go spending, striker Jay Rodriguez joins Virgil van Dijk on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury.

He is out of the Arsenal FA Cup fourth round tie tomorrow at St Mary’s, which leaves Shane Long as the only senior forward available, with top-scorer Charlie Austin out long-term with a shoulder injury.

Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini has been heavily linked with a move to St Mary’s this month, though Puel has continued to label a move for the Italian international as “speculation”.

“We will see for the window market an opportunity or not to get another player, because we are without Jose Fonte and there are a lot of injuries on the squad,” said Puel.

“There are is still some days to see if good opportunities are possible for us.

A fee of around £17.5m has been rumoured for Gabbiadini, who has scored five times in 19 appearances this season in all competitions for Napoli.

Puel was adamant that a deal is not close for the 25-year-old.

“All this for us stays as speculation because I like to speak about new players only if there’s a reality,” he said.

Saints have been hit heavily by injuries this season and Puel says that Saints will “work until the end” of the transfer window to bring somebody in.

With the extent of Van Dijk’s injury still yet to be fully established, as well as a number of players sidelined long-term – including Austin – it’s a priority to strengthen.

“We work perhaps to see some players coming here, but it’s not sure of course,” Puel explained.

“It’s a moment in the window with all the injuries that perhaps it would be better to see a good opportunity [for someone to arrive].

“But I don’t know because in this particular moment it’s difficult to find a good solution in the market.

“I prefer to stay focused about our squad and all those possibilities.

“We will see before Tuesday if players can join this squad.

“We work until the end of the market and we will see the result of the opportunities.”

Van Dijk is due to have further examinations on the ankle injury he sustained against Leicester City last weekend, with no return date to be set for the key defender.

Puel said: “I hope we can have all the news this weekend because he has to pass examinations.

“He saw a specialist to confirm the problem and we will see how long he will stay not available.”

Puel: I have a lot of respect for my former boss Arsene Wenger

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is eagerly awaiting the chance to lock horns with managerial mentor Arsene Wenger once more as Arsenal travel to Southampton in the FA Cup.

Wenger coached Puel at AS Monaco between 1987 and 1995, the pair winning the Ligue 1 title in the now-Arsenal manager’s debut season.

In two meetings as Premier League managers so far results have been balanced, Arsenal winning in the league and Southampton knocking the Gunners out of the EFL Cup at the quarter-final stage in November.

On both occasions Southampton proved formidable opponents for Arsenal, with only a last-minute penalty from Santi Cazorla securing all three points for Wenger’s men when the two sides met at the Emirates in September.

When the Saints visited the Emirates in the EFL Cup in November they were even more impressive, Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand securing a comfortable 2-0 win.

“I have a lot of respect for my former trainer,”Puel said. “It’s a pleasure to see him again – for the first game in the [EFL] Cup it was a good thing for us.

“I imagine he’ll come to Southampton with a strong will to take a good result. All the competition is on the pitch, off the pitch I respect Arsene Wenger a lot.”

Arsenal travel to the south coast without the suspended Granit Xhaka and injured Santi Cazorla but with former Southampton forward Theo Walcott back in the squad after over a month out with a calf injury.

Wenger’s numbers have also been swelled by the returning Danny Welbeck, Kieran Gibbs and Hector Bellerin whilst Puel noted his own sizeable injury list, the second longest in the Premier League.

Most significantly he confirmed that central defender Virgil van Dijk would not be fit for Arsenal’s visit as he continues to struggle with the ankle injury that ruled him out of the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool.

“They have a lot of possibilities, a strong squad,” Puel said. “For us, for example, we don’t have [Charlie] Austin, Van Dijk, [Alex] McCarthy, [Jake] Hesketh, [Jeremy] Pied, [James] Ward-Prowse, [Jay] Rodriguez. A lot of players.

“Perhaps if he doesn’t have one or two players it’s not a strong difference. For us we have a lot of injuries, sometimes major injuries, and it’s important for me just to stay focused about my squad and to see which players are available.

“I’ll try to have a good balance between young and experienced players for this game.”
