Arsenal squad vs Southampton revealed

Show/hide article…

Arsenal welcome Theo Walcott back into their squad for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie against his former club Southampton .

The England international has been struggling with a calf problem but is now fit to be in contention, while Per Mertesacker (knee) and Mathieu Debuchy (hamstring) have also returned to full training.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is likely to rest two or three key players but is without Granit Xhaka, who starts a four-game ban following his red card against Burnley, as well as Mohamed Elneny (international duty) and Santi Cazorla (Achilles).

Despite the possible first-team returns, Wenger remained tight-lipped on who would feature in his Arsenal side for the tie at St Mary’s.

“We’ll put a team with first team experience in there,” said the Frenchman. “Maybe one or two younger players in there.”

Cup success can be a catalyst, says Højbjerg

Show/hide article…

Saints marched on to their first League Cup final since 1979 when they defeated Liverpool on Wednesday night at Anfield.

And with Arsenal next up in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round, Højbjerg is hoping to use that as a catalyst as they search for fourth successive victory.

Reflecting on that success, he said: “It’s fantastic for the club, the players and of course the fans. We all had a great night and moments like that last forever.

“I have heard many things about Anfield but what I heard on Wednesday was the fans of Southampton. They were unbelievable.

“Wembley is holy in footballing terms. It’s a football stadium at its best and it’s a final which is why we want to play, to become big players and become great to achieve something.

“We have that opportunity now to try and get a title.”

While there is confidence coursing throughout the ranks, the Denmark international has reiterated the need for focus.

“We need to take it very serious and forget about the final for a while to get the concentration on to the game against Arsenal.

“They are a very good team, who are currently second in the table, and they have a lot of world class players so we need to be at our best.

“We need to be tactically sharp and to go out and play our game.”

Transfer Deadline Day Q&A: All you need to know

Show/hide article…

The biggest night of the Premier League season is set for this Tuesday, as clubs scrabble to complete deals on transfer deadline day at the same time as a major round of top-flight matches.

Clubs as well-stocked as leaders Chelsea and those struggling as much as bottom-of-the-table Sunderland are still looking to recruit before the window slams shut.

So when do the deals need to be done by, why are there games on the same day and what happens if your star player gets a big offer mid-match? Here, Sportsmail answers all the questions ahead of deadline day.

So when is the deadline?

Clubs in England have been instructed that they must complete any player purchases by 11pm on Tuesday, January 31.

Of course, that will likely be subject to the usual late drama as clubs leave it late with Premier League deal sheets and the like.

If that is submitted before 11pm it will buy clubs a little bit more time until 1am, or midnight for international transfers, to finish off those last-minute buys.

There is the added complication that the window will close at different times elsewhere. In Scotland, midnight is the deadline; in Spain, France and Holland it is the same as England.

Italian clubs have until 10pm, while German sides need to file their business by 5pm UK time.

However, notably in this window, Chinese clubs can still purchase players until later in February.

Why are there Premier League games on the same day? And why didn’t the Premier League move them?

This season has the added complication of a midweek round of Premier League and Championship matches to contest while major transfer work is being done in the background.

Fourteen top-flight teams are in action, with Liverpool vs Chelsea the pick of the bunch.

But this is just a simple scheduling decision. The Premier League needed a set of midweek fixtures at this point in the year and the week which contains deadline day on the Tuesday was the best option.

The big clubs have FA Cup fixtures and replays as well as the EFL Cup semi-finals to deal with at this time of year.

This is the first time since 2012 that games have been played on the night of the window closing.

So will the matches stop deals from getting done?

No. Expect the usual flurry of late-window activity, perhaps with some added panic as the teams at the bottom bid to avoid the drop in the Premier League’s most-lucrative season ever.

Chief executives and club secretaries will be working inside and away from stadiums right up to the deadline to get their managers’ business done.

Antonio Conte and Co might even get a word in the ear at half-time on how their pursuits of top-class players is going in their absence.

What happens if players are the subject of a transfer but play on Tuesday night?

Arsenal, Bournemouth, Burnley, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Southampton, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham, Watford and West Bromwich Albion are all in action on Tuesday.

So expect clubs trying to purchase players from those teams to try to get their business done early so as to avoid the complication of a game getting in the way.

But, equally, anything is possible. We could see Crystal Palace trying to purchase a player from Bournemouth, for example, while the two teams play each other at the Vitality Stadium.

Of course, that could be advantageous – everyone is in the same place, at the same time, and easily able to communicate.

Scenes where players are substituted because a deal is in the offing are unlikely – although perfectly possible.

It is more likely that one or two players may be left out if it looks like they might be on the move come kick-off time at 7.45/8pm.

Could clubs sign a player on Tuesday and field him that night?

That would have potential to offer great pantomime comedy but unfortunately it will not be the case.

Clubs must give the Premier League 24 hours’ notice of the transfer ahead of the game they want to field the new signing in.

So that means deals must go through at 7.45pm on Monday night for the player to feature for his new club in the deadline day games.

Can new signings be cup-tied for FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League and EFL Cup games?

Yes, although most of those issues will already well-known by any potential buyers by now.

Players can only play for one club each season in the Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League.

Of course, only Southampton and Manchester United need to worry about the EFL Cup as the two finalists.

In the FA Cup, plenty of players will have been cup-tied by their involvement in the third round but, if they didn’t play then, they could play this weekend and therefore rule themselves out of playing for any buyers remaining in the competition.

Champions League sides can register one new player making the step up from the Europa League but if the new boys have played in the same competition that is them ruled out again.

What can we expect from deadline day?

Hopefully excitement, with a hint of panic. As mentioned, this is a costly season to be relegated from the Premier League and therefore the teams around the bottom are scrambling.

At the top, too, the ‘Big Six’ must become a top four for the Champions League qualifying places and every additional boost could be vital.

Dimitri Payet still hasn’t found his move away from West Ham, Chelsea haven’t fulfilled Conte’s transfer plans and Pep Guardiola still needs a new defence at Manchester City.

This could be a window of late moves as the Premier League panics.

Keep up to date with all the latest moves with MailOnline’s unbeatable live coverage including the breaking news from our reporters across the country.

And what if my team don’t buy well enough before the deadline?

There’s still some hope — players who are free agents now can still be signed on to contracts and played by clubs after the window by Premier League clubs.

So, if all else fails, why not gamble on Emmanuel Adebayor?

Harry Lewis’ goalkeeping grandad: “I don’t want to praise him too much - but I think he’s better than me.”

Show/hide article…

KEN MULHEARN hopes his grandson Harry Lewis will have the chance to step into the FA Cup spotlight with Saints again this weekend.

Mulhearn, a title winner with Manchester City in 1968 before playing 370 league games for Shrewsbury Town, is so proud that Lewis has followed in his illustrious goalkeeping footsteps, writes STUART DUNN.

Mulhearn was in the stands when Lewis, 19, made his first team debut for Saints at Norwich City in the FA Cup third round earlier this month.

The Shrewsbury-born keeper was then selected for the replay and kept a clean sheet to help set up tomorrow’s fourth round clash against Arsenal at St Mary’s in front of the live BT Sport cameras.

Saints spotted his potential while he was playing in Shrewsbury’s youth team and handed him his first team debut just 16 months after signing him.

Lewis has regularly been on the bench for Saints this season, including in high profile matches against Inter Milan and Liverpool.

But Mulhearn said being told his grandson was going to start in place of England keeper Fraser Forster at Carrow Road was a special moment for the whole family.

“It took the wind right out of my sails when I found out he was playing at Norwich,” Mulhearn said.

“He’s played a couple of times for the first team abroad when they’ve been on tour in pre-season, but to actually play in the FA Cup third round was a big boost to him.

“He made a mistake which led to a penalty but it didn’t bother him and he came out and caught crosses after that.

“That gave me the encouragement that he’s got what it takes. He didn’t go in his shell and he didn’t hold back.

“For the coaches to then pick him for the replay was a big plus in his favour.”

As for the possibility of facing the Gunners, Mulhearn added: “I hope they will play him because he’s coming on in leaps and bounds - but it’s just a great experience for him to be involved with the first team.

“He gets on so well with the other goalkeepers at Southampton and when all’s said and done, he’s only just 19 - but he’s a mature 19 and is not over confident.

“I don’t want to praise him too much - but I think he’s better than me.”

Mulhearn admitted, as pleased as he was to be in the Carrow Road stands to watch Lewis’s debut, it was also a nervy experience.

“It was purgatory as I know the pitfalls.” he said. “I enjoyed it, of course I did, but I was on the edge of my seat all the time.

“My daughter said ‘dad, relax’, but I couldn’t. I’m 71 and it was a bit of a traumatic experience for me, but I hope I see a lot more of him.

“He’s got lots of games to come so I had better get used to it because I think I’ll be seeing a lot of him. I’ll just have to calm down.”

Mulhearn praised the role Shrewsbury Town played in Lewis’s development ahead of his switch to Saints.

He also revealed Lewis, who returns to the family home in Reabrook whenever his busy schedule allows, received a good luck message from England goalkeeper Joe Hart - a fellow Salopian - ahead of his first team debut.

Mulhearn said: “Harry’s got a real affinity for Shrewsbury, as Joe has. Joe got in touch with Harry before his debut at Norwich to wish him well.

“He went to the trouble to find out Harry’s number, so it’s really nice that he did that.”

Arsene Wenger hails Southampton’s academy ahead of FA Cup clash

Show/hide article…

Arsene Wenger today hailed Southampton’s production line as the best in England for a decade.

The Gunners are one of a number of clubs who have raided Saints — signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott — yet the south-coast outfit continue to thrive.

During yet another summer of upheaval, Southampton suffered the loss of manager Ronald Koeman, key midfielder Victor Wanyama and forward Sadio Mane but sit 11th in the Premier League and have reached the League Cup final.

Wenger, who is no stranger to developing young players, praised Southampton’s academy ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth-round meeting. “They have done one of the best jobs in producing young players, on keeping the quality high despite losing big players,” he said.

“What they’ve done is remarkable. They have the quality to become an established top-10 side, when you see what they produced — Walcott, [Gareth] Bale, Oxlade-Chamberlain, plus the players that have left since.”
