TRANSFER COLUMN: Van Dijk race hots up

Show/hide article…

Manchester City maintain an interest in Virgil van Dijk but have other centre-back targets ahead of him on their list.

Van Dijk is a target for Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal though Southampton are looking for more than £50million for the Dutchman.

Van Dijk, 25, signed a six-year contract last summer and made 30 appearances last season before it was curtailed by an ankle ligament injury.

City are keen on Juventus centre back Leonardo Bonucci, who is also a target for Real Madrid and Chelsea should he opt to leave Italy.

They have made an enquiry about signing Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez for next summer though the Spanish are reluctant to lose any players following the decision from CAS to uphold their transfer ban.

City tried to sign the centre back last year, along with his brother Theo who is the subject of an offer from Real Madrid.

Goalkeeper Ederson has agreed his move from Benfica but City are awaiting clearance over third-party issues before announcing the signing officially.

Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy is expected to become their next purchase while no bid has yet gone in for Tottenham right back Kyle Walker.

Manchester United have not received a bid for David de Gea from Real Madrid.

Despite reports of a £60m offer for the Spain No 1, United insist that has yet to happen.

The timing of such news is considered strange in the corridors of Madrid, with Keylor Navas performing so well in recent weeks and preparing for the weekend’s Champions League final against Juventus.

As Sportsmail initially reported in April, United remain confident they are in a strong enough position to rebuff any bids that do come from the Spanish champions.

United have cooled interest in Antoine Griezmann as they push to sign a recognised No 9. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata of Real Madrid are their prime targets.

Lukaku’s agent Mino Raiola told Sportsmail: ‘There’s is nothing concrete at the moment. It is up to Everton to set the price and we will see what happens.’

Arsenal have been told they will have to revise their offer for Henry Onyekuru from Eupen to enable the player to qualify for a work permit.

Arsenal had agreed to pay £6.8m for the 19-year-old who has been called up to Nigeria’s squad but has yet to gain a cap.

However, the club has been told, to fit in with guidelines for the work permit totting up procedure, the new fee will have to be £7.85m with wages set around £35,000 a week.

Marseille are continuing to monitor developments with Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko.

The ambitious French side have yet to bid for the 27-year-old but know he wants to quit Tottenham. Sissoko is eager to stay in England and is hopeful Premier League sides will show interest but Marseille are waiting in the wings.

Marseille have spoken to Crystal Palace about re-signing Steve Mandanda and want Javier Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen.

They retain interest in signing Laurent Koscielny also from Arsenal though Arsene Wenger’s decision to stay may convince the French centre back to do the same.

Celtic are poised to win the race for Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes.

Cardiff City, Birmingham and Sunderland had alll shown interest in the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international but Brendan Rodgers is pushing to link up with the former Leicester City forward.

Celtic have also enquired about Viktor Fischer at Middlesbrough with Patrick Roberts expected to return to Manchester City for pre-season initially before deciding on his next move.

Gael Clichy has interest from Bordeaux and Paris Saint-Germain following his release from Manchester City.

The 31-year-old full back has been linked with a move to Liverpool but the Anfield club are exploring alternatives after also resigning them, selves to missing out on Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.

Liverpool have completed the signing of 16-year-old Norwegian midfielder Edvard Sandvik Tagseth.

Liverpool had agreed to sign the left-footed midfielder in 2015 but could not complete the move until the FK Neset player had turned 16. Liverpool have also signed Bosnian Dal Varesanovic from FK Sarajevo for £43,000.

Chelsea earn over £150m in prize money after winning Premier League

Show/hide article…

Chelsea’s Premier League title victory in Antonio Conte’s first season as a manager in England earned them almost £151m in prize cash, with official figures released on Wednesday showing they have pocketed £150,811,183 from central funds alone.

The money comes primarily from the PL’s huge TV deals but also includes Chelsea’s share of the league’s central commercial income.

Manchester City were the second highest earners, making £146,927,965, followed by Liverpool (£146,122,439) then Tottenham (£145,461,325).

City and Liverpool both earned more than Tottenham despite finishing lower than Spurs in the table because they had more games shown live on TV in the UK - and more TV games means more money in the payments system.

Manchester United, with £141m, were the only other club earning more than £140m although Arsenal came close on £139.6m. The lowest earning club, bottom of the table Sunderland, had to settle for ‘only’ £93,471,118.

The 20 clubs between them have split a staggering £2.4billion this season, from annual Premier League income that is now approaching £3bn a year, the vast majority from TV deals either at home or from overseas.

Chelsea’s money was made up of £38,832,180 ‘merit’ cash for finishing top of the table, £32,827,014 in ‘facility fees’ for being shown in 28 live TV games in the UK, plus equal shares of the domestic TV deal, overseas TV deals and commercial income from the league’s sponsors.

Sky and BT Sport are paying £5.136 billion between them to show Premier League matches live in the UK across three seasons from 2016 to 2019 inclusive. Foreign broadcasters around world are paying more than £3 billion combined, on top, for the same period.

The Premier League also earns money from the sales of highlights, near-live rights, clip rights, and brings in further sums from commercial deals. All that cash goes into one big pot and the sums announced today are the eye-watering rewards for the clubs.

For 2016-17 every club gets an ‘equal’ share of just over £79m derived from domestic TV income, overseas income and commercial income, with specifics in our accompanying table.

Every club then gets another sum depending on league position, worth £1,941,609 per place in the table, from that sum for bottom-placed Sunderland to £38,832,180 to Chelsea.

Each club also gets a variable amount depending on how many times they were shown live on Sky or BT. Every club got a minimum of £12,377,522 from this pot, even if they were shown as rarely as Sunderland and Watford (just eight live televised games each), or Stoke (nine times).

Liverpool were shown live in the UK most, 29 times (a record for one club in one season), followed by Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City (28 times each), Tottenham and Arsenal (25).

Clubs have three main revenue streams: match day income from the likes of tickets and corporate dining, media income - of which the payments listed are the largest but not the only part - and commercial income from kit deals, sponsorship, merchandise, tours and so on.

The ratio in central earnings between highest earners Chelsea at the top and Sunderland at the bottom in 2016-17 is 1.6135 to one.

This is less ‘fair’ than last season’s all-time fairest ratio of 1.5153 to one between top and bottom, but the Premier League still remains by far the most equitable league in division of central funds in this regard.

The difference between top and bottom is closer to 8 to 1, while in Italy’s Serie A it is 5 to 1, in France’s Ligue 1 it is about 3.5 to 1, and even in the German Bundesliga it is 2 to 1.

The Premier League pay ‘parachute’ payments to clubs relegated in recent seasons. The three clubs relegated last season - Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa - get £41m each this time.

Premier League prize money table - How much your team made in 2016/17

Show/hide article…

Chelsea earned almost £151m in prize money after their Premier League title success.

Official figures released on Wednesday showed how much each side has pocketed from the 2016/17 campaign.

And despite finishing in second, Tottenham are only the fourth-highest earners across the top-flight.

The latest figures show Antonio Conte’s title-winners received over £38m for finishing top of the Premier League.

They also pocketed a further £32.8m in ‘facility fees’ having been shown live on Sky Sports or BT in 28 of their 38 games.

An equal share of TV deals both domestically and overseas and commercial income - worth around £79m - takes Chelsea’s total to over £150m.

City and Liverpool earned more then Spurs because they had more games shown live, with Manchester United also earning more than £140m.

In contrast, Sunderland received £1.9m for finishing bottom of the Premier League and £93m in total.

Micky Quinn: Liverpool are very close to signing Southampton star Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

That is according to former Portsmouth and Newcastle forward Micky Quinn, who believes Van Dijk has all the attributes to be a top-class defender.

The Holland international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs since moving to the Saints from Celtic in 2015.

Starsport exclusively revealed in April that Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester City are also battling for Van Dijk.

He is at the top of Jurgen Klopp’s wanted list and it was reported last month that Liverpool are willing to launch a £50m offer.

“I think he is (worth it),” Reds fan Quinn said on talkSPORT.
