Transfer rumours and paper review – Thursday, June 1: Man City prepare £100m Van Dijk deal, Chelsea bid for Monaco star, Matic wants Man United move?

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are preparing a £100million deal for Virgil van Dijk that they hope will allow them to beat Chelsea and Liverpool to the defender’s signature. City are ready to pay Southampton more than £50million and give Van Dijk a five-year contract worth about £180,000 a week, nearly four times his present salary. (The Times)

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have joined forces to try to squeeze mega-deals out of Arsenal. The Gunners’ two biggest stars are entering the final year of their contracts, and both want in excess of £350,000 per week to make a further commitment. (Daily Mirror)

Chelsea are in talks with Monaco over the £42m signing of defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, in a move that could then see Nemanja Matic join Manchester United. (Independent)

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is keen to reunite with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. The 28-year-old has discussed linking up with his former Chelsea manager and a deal is dependent on United and the Premier League champions agreeing a transfer fee. (Manchester Evening News)

Chelsea are not worried about losing Cesar Azpilicueta despite talk in Spain of new Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde making the defender a top target. (Daily Mail)

Manchester United are ready to battle it out with Tottenham for Fulham’s young left-back Ryan Sessegnon. Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho wants to snap up the talented England Under-19s international this summer. (Daily Mirror)

Leicester are ready to put a £50m price tag on Riyad Mahrez. The playmaker has told the Foxes he wants to leave, with a number of big clubs ready to test the water, including Arsenal. (Daily Express)

Everton are on the brink of completing their first summer signing, Cuco Martina from Southampton. (Independent)

Crystal Palace have contacted ex-Liverpool No 2 Mauricio Pellegrino about replacing Sam Allardyce. The Argentinian — a good friend of Tottenham chief Mauricio Pochettino — resigned from the Alaves hotseat on Monday. (The Sun)

Southampton FC transfer news: Jordy Clasie to leave St Mary’s for Serie A?

Show/hide article…

Out-of-favour Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie has emerged as a potential target for Italian giants Lazio.

The Dutch international, who joined the Saints in the summer of 2015, was a peripheral figure for much of last season and could well be loaned out during the transfer window.

Clasie, who started just 12 Premier League games this season, has admitted his desire for first-team football and with midfield competition at Southampton very fierce, he may be forced to consider a temporary spell away.

And, according to Corriere dello Sport, Lazio are exploring the possibility of bringing the 25-year-old to the Stadio Olimpico on a loan deal.

The midfielder joined the south coast club from Feyenoord two years ago and has scored just once in 48 appearances for the Saints.

Man City fear Chelsea and Liverpool will drive price up for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Man City fear Chelsea and Liverpool will drive price up for Virgil van Dijk

Manchester City fear they will be forced to pay more than £50m to sign Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ revealed in April that Van Dijk was one of six players being targeted by City ahead of the summer transfer window.

City are understood to remain “extremely interested” in the Netherlands international with initial enquiries already underway ahead of a potential deal next month.

However, they fear competition from Liverpool and, in particular, Chelsea could drive the price beyond the £50m mark.

Southampton manager Claude Puel and the club’s chairman Ralph Krueger have previously insisted Van Dijk will not be allowed to leave St Mary’s in the summer.

The 25-year-old was rewarded with a new six-year contract in May 2016 and was named Saints captain following the departure of Jose Fonte to West Ham in January.

Van Dijk, who joined Southampton from Celtic in September 2015, made 30 appearances last season before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the 3-0 win over Leicester on January 22.

Transfer news: Martin Braithwaite puts West Ham and Southampton on alert by confirming he wants out of Toulouse

Show/hide article…

West Ham and Southampton target Martin Braithwaite has revealed that he plans to leave Toulouse this summer.

Both Premier League clubs are interested in the Danish forward, who impressed with 11 goals in 34 Ligue 1 games this term.

However, FC Koln remain keen on taking the 25-year-old to the Bundesliga and are reportedly lining up a concrete offer.

Now Braithwaite has lifted the lid on his plans for the summer – and it could be good news for the Hammers and the Saints.

“The time to leave Toulouse has come,” he told DR Sporten in his native Denmark. "It will happen this summer.

"The summer is long. I do not know when a decision will fall, but I remain calm.

“The Bundesliga and the Premier League are great leagues and interesting for me.”

Saints to visit Brentford in pre-season

Show/hide article…

Saints will travel to Griffin Park on Saturday 22nd July to take on the Championship side in a 3pm BST kick-off.

The game is set to take place in between two European training camps that the first-team will be embarking on.

We can confirm these will take place in Austria and France, with dates and opposition for each tour set to be announced in due course.

Saints last visited Brentford in April 2011, when they secured a 3-0 win that pushed them to the verge of promotion from League One.

Dean Smith’s team enjoyed a strong season in the second tier last term, finishing in tenth position, meaning they should provide Saints with a good test as they step up their summer preparations.

The game could also see the club come up against one of their former youngsters, Harlee Dean.

The defender, 25, was with Saints from 2010 until 2012, although he did not make a first-team appearance in that time, and is now the captain of the Bees.

Ticketing details will be announced once confirmed, while further pre-season fixture announcements will be made on southamptonfc.com in due course.
