Get on your bike to help Saints Foundation

Show/hide article…

The Saints Big Bike Challenge is back – and it’s bigger than ever.

The annual event, which raises funds for the Saints Foundation, is offering a multitude of different cycling opportunities to get fit and earn money for one of the area’s most vibrant local charities.

Riders can opt to go for the full cycle, which is some 230 miles from Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium all the way down to St Mary’s over two days to take in the final game of the season. That eclipses the 196 miles cyclists produced last year when they pedalled from Stoke.

A range of distance options are available for those that would like to ride a smaller part of the route, but still want to get involved.

Last year’s event raised over £45,000, with all proceeds going towards supporting Saints Foundation’s worthwhile projects within the community. This year’s target is even bigger, just like the ride itself.

There is an information evening on Monday, February 5, and the event is supported by British Cycling, who will offer advice and training rides to help preparation.

The Foundation are more than happy to put on shorter rides for those that require them. If this is something that might interest you, please email abennett@saintsfc.co.uk to register your interest.

Birmingham 3-1 Sunderland: Davis, Boga and Gallagher on target in win

Show/hide article…

Birmingham scored three goals in a Championship game for the first time since October 2016 to comfortably claim victory in this battle of the division’s two basket-case clubs.

Sunderland’s performance against a relegation rival should seriously concern Chris Coleman, who must hope some sign of salvation can arrive on deadline day.

Coleman’s side did rally late and scored a consolation through Bryan Oviedo but the game was already gone.

For Steve Cotterill, victory in this crunch contest was a continuation of recent good form and meant his team rose out of the drop zone for the first time in two months.

Sunderland had enjoyed an extra week to prepare but that advantage was not reflected as Birmingham carried much the greater intensity, until the final stages when the hosts sunk back to try to protect their lead.

Quality was a scarce commodity for large periods but Cotterill’s team managed to muster enough at key moments, which combined with Sunderland’s defensive ineptitude meant only one result.

Gone was the resilience shown by Coleman’s side in the morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Hull ten days ago, replaced by a lethargy that meant Birmingham goalkeeper David Stockdale was a mere bystander for the most part.

Sunderland could have twice gone behind early on, first when Sam Gallagher wasted Jeremy Boga’s fine cross by heading wide, then when Oviedo’s last-ditch challenge denied Jacques Maghoma a tap-in.

But it was only a matter of time and Cotterill’s team went ahead in the 28th minute. David Davis played a backeel to Maghoma then ran to collect the one-two and fire a low shot that went through Robbin Ruiter.

Birmingham doubled their lead a minute before the break when Jeremie Boga ran onto Maghoma’s cross and powered a clinical header into the net.

Sunderland imploded further ten minutes after the interval when nobody thought to track Davis’s run from a long ball and Ruiter raced from his line in an attempt to salvage the situation but succeeded only in leaving his goal unguarded. So Davis simply turned back and centred for Gallagher to slide in an easy finish. It was the on-loan Southampton striker’s sixth goal in his last eight games.

Gallagher then gave Lamine Kone the run around from half way before cutting inside and striking a shot that flew just wide.

Curiously, Birmingham opted to go into defensive mode and that meant for a few nervy moments towards the end.

Oviedo pulled one back for the visitors when volleying in at the far post and Aiden McGeady forced a rare save from Stockdale with a well-placed free-kick.

Southampton have £25m offer for Quincy Promes rejected

Show/hide article…

Southampton have had a club-record £25million bid for Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes turned down.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has been chasing the Holland international throughout this transfer window.

But the Russian side have told them they will have to break their transfer record for a second time this month if they want to sign the winger.

Their previous club record outlay was £18.1m for Mario Lemina last August but they smashed that with the £19.2m signing of Monaco forward Guido Carrillo last week.

Pellegrino is desperate to bolster his attack further with the acquisition of Promes but Spartak have set an asking price of £30m on his head and are refusing to budge in their valuation.

The 26-year-old has been in sensational form this season netting 15 goals in 25 games in all competitions.

Southampton are considering whether or not to improve their initial offer and know they will have to decide quickly with the window shutting on Wednesday evening.

Confidence key for Saints

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has urged Saints to take confidence into tonight’s massive St Mary’s relegation battle with Brighton.

Saints go into the game one point behind the Seagulls and knowing they desperately need a first Premier League win since November.

The team have been heading slowly in the right direction in recent weeks, and are unbeaten in their last four matches, which includes two FA Cup victories.

Pellegrino admits it is easy to just say the players should be confident but is hoping it will be the case.

He said: “I have got confidence when I try to do everything on the pitch and I try to give information and we practise on the pitch in the way we think we can be better.

“I feel confident when I see my players are committed on the pitch and they are ready to compete.

“When you see they switch on and are ready to compete I feel the confidence, from action and not from the sky.

“Confidence is not something you can buy in the shop, but something you have to build little by little.

“Sometimes you say ‘I need your confidence’ but when you don’t give some response to your boss, it’s difficult your boss will give you confidence.

“First of all you have to believe in yourself, to do your job well and it’s the same for us. The confidence is something you can grow and build with a small action every single day.”

It is a massive few days for Saints, who travel to face another relegation rival in West Brom on Saturday.

“We will try to do everything to try and win the game,” insisted Pellegrino ahead of tonight’s game.

“In the Premier League the difference is really tight for every single team and now obviously Brighton is a good team.

“They have been working together many times for the last seasons and they have got some qualities really good in defence and attack and it will be really tight.

“In the Premier League one small detail or action can change everything.

“I have confidence we are ready to compete well.”

Pellegrino is hoping that Ryan Bertrand will be fit to play after the left back was forced off during the FA Cup win over Watford with a hamstring injury.

He is also weighing up whether to hand a first start to new club record signing Guido Carrillo.

The £19.2m striker only joined last Thursday, and doesn’t speak English, but Saints could turn to him as they try and find three points.

“It’s not 100 per cent the connection with his teammates but we will decide.

“We have two important games and I have to think about the first one but it’s one possibility.”

No transfer Promeses for Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints are set to push to bring in a deadline day signing with negotiations continuing over a possible club record deal for Quincy Promes.

The club have broken their transfer record once this month, landing Guido Carrillo for £19.2m.

They are prepared to break it again to land Promes, but much depends on whether his club, Spartak Moscow, decide to sell.

Saints have been ready to pay to get the deal done, and as previously reported in the Daily Echo, it is understood that the player is keen on a switch to St Mary’s.

However, Spartak don’t want to lose their star player in January, and certainly won’t sanction a move if they can’t get a suitable replacement in.

The transfer window closes at 11pm, just after Saints have played Brighton in a crucial relegation battle.

Behind the scenes Les Reed and Ross Wilson are set for a busy day as they try and ascertain whether there are any legs left in the Promes deal.

There is confusion over the exact state of the negotiations, with Saints prepared to spend big and meet what seemed an initial valuation, but reports in Russia indicate that Spartak want a €30m buyout clause hit as well as an additional 15 per cent, that is payable direct to Promes if he moves.

That would suddenly bump a deal up towards €35m, which would be well in excess of Promes’ market valuation and would almost certainly scupper a move with Saints unlikely to want to pay so far over the odds.

Saints are still looking elsewhere and are ready to react with an expectation that there could be a few market moves and something else may crop up.

However, with the addition of Carrillo, Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino has already indicated that he is satisfied to keep going with what he has rather than spend far too much on a player, or bring in one that won’t have the desired impact.

Saints could also loan out one or two players, with some of their youngsters coveted by Championship clubs and potentially able to get some much needed experience.

For all the talk of transfers, the main focus for Pellegrino remains on tonight’s game with Brighton, and he insists he won’t’ get distracted.

“I am not worried about that because there are people in the club working and negotiating and talking,” he said.

“I know just the conclusion and the end result of the negotiation but I am not fighting with the other or working in negotiation. It’s not my job.

“Sometimes I have to make decisions about our players to come in or go out but I am not part of the negotiation.”
