Transfer Rater: Ashley Barnes to Crystal Palace, Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest rumours.

Barnes is one of three Crystal Palace transfer targets as the January transfer window comes to a close, according to the Daily Mail. Roy Hodgson’s side are reported to be lining up an £11 million bid for the Burnley man, who has also been linked with Chelsea. Diafra Sakho had been on Palace’s shortlist, but he has since joined Rennes. Other than Barnes, they are also reported to be looking at West Brom’s Jake Livermore and Lille centre-back Ibrahim Amadou.

The Sun claim Southampton are lining up a loan move for Walker-Peters before the transfer deadline. Mauricio Pellegrino wants cover at right-back for Cedric Soares and has identified the Tottenham Hotspur man as the perfect solution. With Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier ahead of him in the pecking order at Wembley, Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly willing to let the 20-year-old leave on a temporary basis.

Middlesbrough are leading the chase for New York City winger Harrison, according to the Daily Star. The England Under-21 international is also a Newcastle United and Stoke City transfer target. It had previously been thought that he was set to move to Stoke, his hometown club. But Middlesbrough are seemingly prepared to pay £6m for the 21-year-old, which is more than any other club at the moment, giving them an advantage in the chase for him.

Everton are one of a handful of Premier League clubs who have been scouting Hull City striker Bowen. The 21-year-old has been in impressive form for Hull this season, scoring 11 Championship goals. And the Daily Mail believe that has led to him attracting interest from Sam Allardyce’s side, as well as Newcastle and Burnley. But with the Yorkshire outfit sitting in 21st and flirting with relegation, they are unlikely to be willing to sell their brightest prospect and risk relegation two seasons in a row.

Sky Sports say Elphick is set to join Reading on loan until the end of the season. The defender has made just four Championship appearances for Steve Bruce’s side in 2017-18 after falling behind James Chester and John Terry in the pecking order at Villa Park. The 30-year-old wants more first-team football and has even less chance of that happening if he stays after the loan arrival of Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United.

Late decisions on Bertrand and Carrillo

Show/hide article…

The England international was prematurely withdrawn for Jérémy Pied during Saturday’s win over Watford in the Emirates FA Cup while striker Carrillo made his club debut from the bench in the closing eight minutes.

Southampton boss Pellegrino is hopeful that both players will play an important part against the Seagulls in two days’ time.

"Ryan was taken off during the game the other day but he is much better today. He will try and get ready tomorrow and we will see what condition he is in.

“Guido came off the bench for us on Saturday and maybe is not yet at 100 per cent. Like Ryan, we will have another look at him tomorrow.”

The Argentinian also delivered some positive news regarding Charlie Austin.

Saints’ leading scorer has been sidelined since reporting a hamstring injury in December’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield and “is back on the pitch training, something that is really good news for us.”

Mauricio Pellegrino denies Manolo Gabbiadini is set for January exit from Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has denied Manolo Gabbiadini is set to join Bologna.

Reports in Italy have linked Gabbiadini with a return to his former club but Pellegrino expects the 26-year-old to remain with the Saints as they continue their fight against relegation.

When asked if the Italy international was set to leave in January, Pellegrino said: "I don’t think so.

"This morning I was talking with (vice-chairman of football) Les (Reed). Every day we are talking about some news in the market, if there is the possibility of some players trying to try to leave and some to bring in but nobody has told me anything about Manolo.

“He is an important player for us, obviously he is not playing too much at the moment but he is one of our main strikers and I want to keep him.”

Sky sources understand Southampton remain in talks with Spartak Moscow over a deal to sign winger Quincy Promes.

Pellegrino confirmed the club are looking to sign new players before the window closes but admitted time is running out for deals to be completed.

“Obviously we have been working to bring in players with quality,” said Pellegrino. “Two days left, it is not easy. We will keep pushing but we are not sure until the end what will happen.”

Southampton return to Premier League action when they host south coast rivals Brighton on Wednesday afternoon and Pellegrino believes there is little to separate the two sides.

“In the Premier League now, the difference between every single team in is really tight,” he said.

"Brighton is a good team - they have been working together for a long time. It will be a really difficult game but in the Premier League, one action can change everything.

“I have confidence we are ready to compete well, knowing that it will be really difficult.”

Pellegrino issues Gabbiadini transfer update

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has played down reports that Manolo Gabbiadini will leave Saints before the end of the month.

Gabbiadini has been heavily linked with a loan move to Bologna after finding game time hard to come by at St Mary’s.

Saints have completed a club record deal for Guido Carrillo, but with Charlie Austin sidelined can ill afford to let another striker leave with Gabbiadini and Shane Long the only frontline alternatives.

Pellegrino said: “I don’t think so.

“This morning I was talking with Les. Every day we are talking about some news in the market, about how we have the possibility for some players to leave and some to try and bring in but nobody told me anything about Manolo.

“He’s an important player for us.

“He’s not playing too much right now but is one of our main strikers, our main players, and I want to keep him.”

Pellegrino, who also dismissed speculation linking Saints with a loan move for Tottenham youngster Kyle Walker-Peters, was also quizzed on the possibility of Quincy Promes joining from Spartak Moscow and replied: “It’s all speculation.

“Obviously we have been working with many players to bring players with capacity, with quality.

“It is not easy but we will keep pushing and we are not sure until the end what will happen with us.”

Leonardo Ulloa in Brighton squad for Southampton game, says Chris Hughton

Show/hide article…

Brighton manager Chris Hughton has confirmed loan signing Leonardo Ulloa has gone straight into the matchday squad to play Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Argentine striker spent three-and-a-half years on the south coast before joining Leicester for £8m in July 2014.

He stated in January 2017 he would not play for the Foxes again after a move away from the King Power Stadium failed to materialise, tweeting at the time: “I feel betrayed by [Claudio] Ranieri and let down by the club. I will not play for them again…” although he subsequently relented.

Albion have been struggling for goals, scoring just 17 times in 24 Premier League appearances this season.

Ulloa netted 26 goals in 58 appearances during his first spell at Brighton, albeit with those coming in the Championship, and Hughton is hoping he can have a positive influence on his side as they look to pull away from the relegation zone.

“He’s in the squad for Wednesday and we are happy with his levels. He hasn’t played as many games as he would have liked,” Hughton said of Ulloa.

"We have found it difficult to get the goals we need to win games, so to have that competition and options in that position is definitely something we wanted to do.

"We know the type of player Ulloa is and what he will bring to the squad. He has gained great experience in the last few years in the games he has been involved with.

“We want him to bring that quality and experience to us and give us the options we felt we needed.”

As for the Southampton game, Hughton believes they will face a tough test at St Mary’s, despite their opponents having failed to win in their last 11 Premier League matches.

“They have attacking options, play a good brand of football and are easy on the eye,” added Hughton.

"It is a surprise they haven’t won more games…but that is the level of competition in this league.

"Looking at their performances, they have been very close in a lot of games. That makes it a very difficult game, especially away from home.

“They have got a lot of good quality, technical players, especially in forward areas. They have got a lot of good athletes in the team and pay the game at a very high tempo.”

Hughton also gave an injury update on record signing Jurgen Locadia, who signed from PSV Eindhoven for £14m earlier in the January transfer window but has been struggling with a hamstring problem.

“If he had his way, I think he would be out training with us now,” said Hughton.

“I see him training with the team, hopefully a week today. He’s done everything right in his rehab so far.”
