Stephens confident Saints can now get themselves out “sticky situation”

Show/hide article…

JACK Stephens admitted it was pleasing to get one over on Watford in the FA Cup and is now confident Saints can get themselves out their “sticky situation” in the Premier League.

Earlier this month, Saints surrendered a two-goal lead against the Hornets at Vicarage Road, with a handball goal by Abdoulaye Doucoure making it 2-2 in the last minute of normal time.

On Saturday, Mauricio Pellegrino’s men got one back on Watford with a 1-0 win in the FA Cup fourth round and Stephens, who scored the winning goal in the fourth minute, is sure the triumph will lift them as they bid to escape the drop zone.

Eighteenth placed Saints can potentially pull closer to struggling Watford, who were woeful at St Mary’s on Saturday and are just four points ahead of Pellegrino’s men in tenth, this week. Saints play fellow battlers Brighton on Wednesday before a trip to 19th-placed West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

“I won’t lie, it’s nice to put them out the cup,” said Stephens, who celebrated his 24th birthday with his first goal for the club in the FA Cup win.

“It’s important we focus on ourselves and we wanted to get through in this cup and it gives us a boost for Wednesday’s game.

“We need to get some points because we’re in a sticky situation which I’m confident we can get out of but we need to start getting some points.”

He continued: “The goal is a bonus for me. I’m just glad it helped get the team the result we needed.

“We would have liked it to be a bit more comfortable but we got the result and we played really well I thought, especially first half, and we’re through, which is the main thing.”

In the 2-2 draw at Watford, Saints were undone as the hosts went direct and more physical in a second-half during which Stephens admits Pellegrino’s side were “bullied”.

However, Saints demonstrated resilience on Saturday and protected their one-goal lead successfully, even if they did drop deep and invite pressure from Watford.

“After that game (the 2-2) we had to look at ourselves and we had to stand up and be counted because when we were faced with it at their place I thought we got bullied really for periods of that second half,” he said.

“Obviously, the equalising goal was disappointing to concede, but the way we played in that second half was poor.

"Today we dealt with it really well and limited their chances and we stopped them creating any big chances and managed to hold on.”

Pellegrino brought on centre-back Maya Yoshida on in place of attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal in the 67th minute; a negative change which drew much contempt from the St Mary’s crowd.

And it proved to be a drab closing period to the game, as Saints clung on with Stephens’ first goal for the club the difference in the end.

“I’ve missed a couple of chances the last couple of weeks, so I have felt like it’s been getting closer and a few of the lads have been getting on at me,” he said, about his goal.

“My job’s obviously to defend and if I can get on the end of one in their box then it’s a bonus. But it’s definitely nice to get one.”

Now Stephens is targeting vital points against Brighton and West Brom.

He said: “We’re not going to deny they are big games. We need to get points, but then they’re going to be fighting as well.

“It’s going to be a battle, but I think if we play like today and like we did against Spurs we’ll have no problems.”

THE VERDICT: Momentum key for Saints

Show/hide article…

Revenge for a handball equaliser? FA Cup progress? A chance for a warm welcome to a new club record signing? No, this game was all about momentum for Saints.

In sport, where momentum is so crucial, Saints went into the fourth round tie with Watford knowing they needed to increase a feeling of wind at their backs.

The game was much less about making it to the last 16 of the FA Cup, though that is a handy by-product of victory, and more about preparation for a vital Premier League double header.

The fixtures against Brighton and West Brom in the coming days could go a long way to deciding whether Saints will stay in the Premier League.

And Mauricio Pellegrino knew he had to try and keep the wheels moving after a creditable draw with Tottenham, which suggested things were still edging in the right direction.

Pellegrino’s team selection – really going as strong as he could – proved that.

There would have been an argument for resting players to protect them for that crucial double header. When Ryan Bertrand, such a key man for Saints, limped off you did wonder whether he had made the correct decision.

But the plan ended up coming good. Victory makes everything seem so much better in football, and a first home win since November, no matter how it came, was exactly what was required ahead of the visit of Brighton to St Mary’s.

Saints carried forward their momentum from the Tottenham game to get off to a fast start and take the lead after just four minutes.

It came via a set-piece with Bertrand delivering an outswinging free kick from the left wing that came to Shane Long.

The striker looked set to score but his low shot was saved by the legs of Orestis Karnezis. It ricocheted straight to Jack Stephens who gratefully dispatched the chance with a simple low finish from close range.

Saints spent most of the first half on top, albeit in a fairly pedestrian game, but unable to add to their advantage.

Cedric Soares was at the heart of most of their most potent attacks.

He might have scored himself had Jose Holebas not done just enough to put him off as he lined up to shoot after Long’s brilliant left wing ball, while the Portuguese delivered a right wing cross that was just too high for Long to direct on target.

The right back had a go at goal on 26 minutes but his swerving low drive was saved by Karnezis before a superb low ball into the six yard box somehow evaded everybody and went behind.

Watford only threatened Alex McCarthy in stoppage time when Richarlison spotted him slightly off his line and tried an outrageous effort that the keeper was able to tip over.

The rather average feel to the game as a spectacle continued into the second period, but again it was Saints who were certainly the better of the two sides.

Long forced Karnezis into a save and then pulled off a marvellous touch to bring the ball under control in the area before a shot to forget.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg produced a wonder strike from 25 yards out, hitting a fierce right footed shot that moved in the air before rattling the crossbar and bouncing to safety.

After Watford had thrown on the ammunition to attack and to potentially go more direct, which undid Saints in the second half at Vicarage Road, Pellegrino responded.

It wasn’t a move that went down well with the Saints faithful as he took off an attacking player in Boufal for Maya Yoshida and went to three centre halves. At Watford he had dropped Oriol Romeu deeper instead.

While switching to a more defensive mode again didn’t ease the nerves, it did work out this time.

Watford were missing Troy Deeney, and that lack of quality did them no favours as their attempts to get back into it looked more desperate than targeted.

They also weren’t helped by their supporters, who chanted some pretty negative stuff about their own team throughout the match, and the sparks that flew as players became embroiled in arguments with fans after the final whistle summed it all up for them.

They look frayed, and in big trouble.

Stefano Okaka did hit an acrobatic volley over the bar, while right at the death Watford created their best chance of the game as Christian Kabasele missed the target with a free header at the far post ten yards out.

But with momentum so critical it felt as if it was Saints edging in the right direction and Watford going the wrong way.

If Pellegrino’s men can keep this going they might just be able to ease their relegation fears in the coming days.

Loan Watch: Championship wins for Reed and Targett

Show/hide article…

The only goal of the game came on five minutes through James Maddison’s strike from 30-yards and the Canaries stood firm to register their fourth straight away clean sheet.

Matt Targett made his Fulham debut in the Championship as he played 45 minutes of their 3-1 victory over Barnsley at Oakwell.

The full-back replaced Denis Odoi at the interval as the Londoners moved into the play-off spots thanks to two stoppage-time strikes.

Liam Lindsay had given the hosts a lead, but they were reduced to ten men when Dimitri Cavare was sent off for raising his hands to Stefan Johansen.

Ryan Sessengnon netted his 10th goal of the season shortly after the break, before Kevin McDonald made it 2-1 and Sessengnon added a third from Neeskens Kebano’s cross.

In Scotland, it was a disappointing afternoon for Harry Lewis and Dundee United, who remain 11 points off Championship leaders St Mirren following their 3-0 defeat to Greenock Morton.

Thomas O’Ware headed in Michael Tidser’s free-kick before Scott Tiffoney and Jack Iredale rounded off the visitors’ win.

In Belgium, Jordy Clasie played the duration of Club Brugge’s 2-0 away defeat at Gent, courtesy of goals from Franko Andrijasevic and Samuel Kalu.

Jaïdi previews Stoke clash

Show/hide article…

Radhi Jaïdi is looking to strip it back to basics as his side travel to Stoke City in Premier League 2 this evening, emphasising that the aim is not to “overcomplicate” things, but to get the fundamentals right.

Saints’ Under-23s side have struggled in league competition of late, with postponements to games adding to the frustration. But given the time to reflect, and freshness after an extended break in fixtures, Jaïdi is confident his young side can produce at St George’s Park tonight.

"We want the players to have the maximum game time, that’s what they are here for, Jaïdi asserted. "It is frustrating when games get cancelled, but we’ve had time to review and work with the team.

"A clean sheet and scoring goals, that will be the key to success. We don’t try to overcomplicate things, it is simple. A good performance includes clean sheets, especially away from home.

“And then for sure, we’ll have opportunities. Converting those in to goals is what we’re asking for, concentration in the final third and to be more clinical.”

the players themselves are aware of the opportunities we give them at this club, and they need to be ready for the next step.

Tonight’s squad will likely feature 17-year-old striker Michael Obafemi, who was recently propelled in to the spotlight with a first-team debut against Tottenham.

Obafemi has netted twelve times for the Under-18s this term, as Jaïdi comments on the teenager’s recent headway and future potential: "Definitely, it is pleasing to see young boys progress through the levels. Michael is the work of the whole academy system, from bottom to top.

"The players themselves are aware of the opportunities we give them at this club, and they need to be ready for the next step.

“We have all confirmed that Michael has talent, but he needs to keep working hard. He’ll be with the Under-23s for a while, which will present more challenges. It is a higher level and it also sends a positive message to the other boys.”

West Ham open Graziano Pelle talks as Diafra Sakho joins Rennes - sources

Show/hide article…

West Ham United are in talks to sign former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Pelle is currently plying his trade in China with Shandong Luneng after joining the Chinese Super League club from Southampton in 2016. The 32-year-old impressed in the Premier League during his two seasons with the Saints, scoring 30 goals during his time on the South Coast.

West Ham are in the market for a new striker before the transfer window closes this week and Pelle has emerged as a top target. David Moyes is currently without the injured Andy Carroll, who could be ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle problem.

Meanwhile, Diafra Sakho has completed a permanent switch to Rennes on a two-and-a-half year deal, leaving Moyes short of attacking options as the Hammers battle to avoid relegation.

West Ham have already signed Portugal international Joao Mario on loan from Inter Milan this month and they are hoping to add Pelle to their ranks before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

The Italy international’s wages could be an issue, however, with Pelle earning £1 million a month in China.

Which big deals are still to be done? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Aymeric Laporte, Daniel Sturridge and more

Show/hide article…

Which big deals are still to be done? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Aymeric Laporte, Daniel Sturridge and more

As Deadline Day approaches, we run through the deals that are still on the table involving Premier League sides.

The race to get deals over the line looks set to be more dramatic than ever, as seven Premier League matches are also scheduled for Wednesday night.

But you can stay across the excitement of Deadline Day AND the live action across Sky Sports’ platforms - find out how here.

After several years of frustration in the transfer market, Arsenal fans will be terribly miffed if this one doesn’t get over the line come 11pm on Wednesday.

Behind Alexis Sanchez, this has arguably been the saga of the January window, but what’s the latest? It seems there’s still a fair bit to be done by close of play.

Arsenal have reached a £60m agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund to sign him, according to Sky sources.

It is understood that talks are ongoing between the clubs, but a deal has not yet been reached for the striker.

The Aubameyang situation leads us nicely into this one. Could Giroud be heading to Dortmund?

Sources told Sky Sports News on Sunday night that Arsenal striker Giroud may yet be involved in a deal to bring Aubameyang to the Emirates. Arsene Wenger said on Friday that Giroud would not leave unless another player came in.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea have also been monitoring Giroud’s situation as they continue their hunt for a target man.

Like dominoes, Aubameyang’s move may have a knock-on effect on Moura’s future. Sky Sports News understands that if Aubameyang does leave, Dortmund’s number one target is PSG winger Moura.

However, Moura’s preference is to move to the Premier League and Tottenham are in talks to sign him on a permanent basis, Sky Sports News has been told.

Moura sees England as the best opportunity to revive his hopes of playing in the World Cup for Brazil in Russia.

PSG will only consider permanent offers for the player as they are conscious of complying with FFP rules following the signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and would be willing to sell for around £23m.

Moura’s coach Unai Emery has already said he has no future at PSG and has urged him to find another club.

Top of the league, fighting strong on four fronts, but Pep Guardiola wants to improve his defence. Enter Laporte, who City tried and failed to get in 2016.

City have agreed a deal to sign defender Laporte from Athletic Bilbao, according to Sky in Italy.

City are thought to be happy to match the defender’s £57m release clause, which would break the club’s transfer record of £55m that they paid for Kevin De Bruyne in 2015.

Laporte, who has made 19 appearances for Athletic this season, has issued a farewell message to the Spanish club on Monday.

To say Chelsea have been keen on a striker in January is an understatement. The latest target is former Man City frontman Dzeko, but could he be prised away from Roma?

Chelsea are willing to pay Roma £26m for Dzeko, Sky Sports News understands. The 31-year-old is understood to want a basic salary of £90k-a-week, and a contract to run until the summer of 2021.

It is the latest twist in Chelsea’s search for a new striker, following Roma’s denial on Thursday that a deal had been agreed for Dzeko.

The Birmingham-born striker could be heading back to the Midlands before Wednesday night, having been linked with a move away from Watford for the last few transfer windows.

West Brom have made contact with Watford to discuss a possible deal to buy striker Deeney, Sky Sports News understands.

Albion are prepared to pay around £16m for Deeney and the club’s officials believe they have found a way to fund the fee without being in breach of FFP rules.

It was previously understood that Albion boss Alan Pardew needed to sell players to generate the money to make new signings.

Centre-back Evans, who has been a target for Arsenal and Manchester City, is the club’s most obvious asset to cash in on during the January window.

However, Sky Sports News understands there has been no contact from City or Arsenal since the opening week of the window. With City chasing Laporte, and Arsenal focused on getting Aubameyang done, will Evans stay put?

Speaking last week, Pardew confirmed no official bids had been placed for Evans, though enquiries have been made - while quashing reports of an Arsenal bid of £10m plus Mathieu Debuchy.

“We might sell if the price is right, that’s that deal, everything else is pure speculation.”

Take one stubborn Championship side, add one Premier League side desperate for more quality, and what do you get? A Deadline Day saga, most likely.

West Ham have had a £15m bid for Fulham’s Cairney rejected, according to Sky sources.

The bid for the Fulham captain was made last week and Sky Sports News understands West Ham were told they were wasting their time and not even an offer of £40m would be considered.

Cairney was a notable absentee for Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Barnsley at the weekend, with manager Slavisa Jovanovic confirming he missed out as a result of his ongoing knee injury and was not fit enough for a place on the bench.

The Scotland international is understood to want a move to West Ham but the player and his representatives accept he will not be sold this month, according to Sky sources.

There is not much time left for Liverpool striker Sturridge to sort out his future.

There are loan offers on the table from Newcastle and Inter Milan - but he looks set to join West Brom on loan for the rest of the season.

Remember, it’s a World Cup year and Sturridge has started just five league games this season.

The coming hours are extremely important to the future of Newcastle, and Rafa Benitez’s overall satisfaction at the club.

Sturridge is on the wish list, but Feyenoord are demanding more money if they are to consider selling Jorgensen. Newcastle are refusing to be held to ransom over the striker, Sky Sports News understands.

Newcastle have made two offers for Jorgensen, the second of which was worth £15m, but both were rejected by Feyenoord. Surely, surely they’ll come in with more dosh?

Benitez also confirmed at the weekend that Aleksandar Mitrovic may be allowed to leave the club if a new striker is brought in

Chelsea have a deal in principle agreed for Roma full-back Emerson Palmieri, and that is likely to be completed before the window closes, costing around £20m.

Southampton remain in talks for Spartak Moscow’s Dutch winger Quincy Promes, with the Russian side holding out for around £30m.

Stoke are in talks with Galatasaray over midfielder Badou Ndiaye, and West Ham are in for Russia captain Fedor Smolov.

Crystal Palace target Vincent Guaita is expected to stay at Getafe beyond the January window, and a loan offer for Lille midfielder Ibrahim Amadou has been rejected. It could be a busy last few days for Palace, who are also interested in Burnley’s Ashley Barnes.

As for Merseyside, outgoings are more likely than incomings at both Liverpool and Everton.
