Fleming: We want to see more of the same

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters put on a confident display to see off West Ham 3-0 last Saturday,

and Fleming is hopeful of seeing more of the same upon their return to London.

“We want to see more of the same, really,” he started.

“We have started the season quite well, with a good performance on the first day of the season but not a great result.

“And then we got both against West Ham with a 3-0 win. We created a lot of chances and thankfully took a few of them, so it is just more of the same really.”

Jake Vokins, who started both opening Under-18 Premier League games for Saints, received his first England Under-18s call-up earlier this week.

The left-back has been selected for the Young Lions’ upcoming friendlies against South Africa and Brazil, and Fleming was delighted for the 17-year-old left-back.

“It’s very good news – Jake has done really well,” he continued.

“Especially when you look back at home quickly it has all happened for him. He played his first game for us in the FA Youth Cup at just 15.

“Within a couple of weeks of that he was then with the under-23s. Obviously he has had his ups and downs – he is a young lad and still learning his trade.

“It’ll be great for him to go away and play more international football, especially against the likes of Brazil. And he is obviously in their thoughts with the World Cup coming up in India.”

Hunter: We need to be better

Show/hide article…

Saints looked on course for a point in the Premier League 2 meeting at Staplewood Campus, but were undone by Joseph Nuttall’s 89th-minute header, as they suffered a second defeat in the week, following Monday’s 3-0 loss at Wolves.

Despite the frustration of the result, Hunter could at least look back on a better display that the side had produced a few days earlier/

“It was a better performance in terms of work rate and dealing with a lot of physical challenges, which we’re going to get in this league,” said Southampton’s Technical Director.

"But, particularly in the later stages of the game, when we got the ball in good positions, we didn’t hurt them enough. In fact, their keeper only made one save in the game, so that’s disappointing.

"As regards the attitude and the work rate, you can’t fault that, but conceding another sloppy goal right at the end is very disappointing.

“The positives are in terms of work rate and the players trying to do things, but we need to be better than that on and off the ball.”

Hunter did highlight an impressive display from newly-signed keeper Jack Rose, who produced one particularly sensational stop.

“He made one outstanding save in the first half, and his distribution on the whole is terrific, so there’s plenty of potential there,” said Hunter. “We’re pleased we’ve got him, his attitude’s good, so we’ll keep working with him.”

Saints U23s suffer late loss

Show/hide article…

Joseph Nuttall’s 89th-minute header gave the visitors a 1-0 lead, after it looked like both teams would take a point.

It was cruel on Saints, who gave as good as they got against a strong Rovers side, who had won both of their opening games coming into this.

Having lost 3-0 at Wolves on Monday night, following an opening 4-0 home win over Reading, Saints could at least reflect on a more positive performance heading into Tuesday night’s Checkatrade Trophy clash away to Peterborough United.

There was one change for Saints from the side that lost at Wolves on Monday, as Ben Rowthorn was replaced in midfield by Thomas O’Connor, who returned to the starting line-up after overcoming the hamstring injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

The hosts came under threat in the fourth minute of the game, but keeper Jack Rose, who signed earlier this month, made an excellent save to turn away a Lewis Travis effort, after he cut onto his right foot in a dangerous position in the area.

Saints nearly carved out an opening after 11 minutes, as Richard Bakary’s delivery from the right was flicked on by the head of Callum Slattery, but the ball skidded just out of reach of Tyreke Johnson at the back post.

Again, in the 20th minute, the hosts nearly carved out a golden opportunity, as Marcus Barnes played a superb ball in behind for Jonathan Afolabi, but Rovers keeper Andrew Fisher sprinted out of his area to clear the ball a fraction of a second before the striker could get there.

Saints were beginning to get on top by the midway stage of the half, and they threatened again as Ollie Cook peeled away to the back post to meet O’Connor’s corner, but could only head over from a tight angle.

They could have gone behind in the 33rd minute, though, as a neat Rovers move resulted in Joseph Rankin-Costello receiving the ball in space just inside the area, but his low shot towards the far corner was sensationally saved by a diving Rose to keep the scores level.

At the other end, Barnes tested Fisher with a deflected effort from distance after a driving run, but the visiting keeper was equal to it, as the sides went in level at half-time.

Rovers were first to threaten after the restart, as the visitors again worked the ball to Rankin-Costello in space in the area, but Rose did not have to worry so much about this effort, as the ball was hit straight at him.

After Johnson tested Fisher, Rose had to be alert back at the other end to gather an in-swinging free-kick that pinged around inside the six-yard box.

Saints’ first change came in the 62nd minute, as Will Smallbone replaced O’Connor, and it nearly paid dividends within moments, as the substitute slid in to meet a low Barnes cross, but his effort on the stretch spun agonisingly wide.

Rovers really should have led with 15 minutes to go, as a Connor Thomson delivery picked out substitute Callum Wright, but he headed wide from a brilliant position.

Nuttall, however, made no mistake when the ball dropped to him with less than two minutes left, as he nodded into the top corner to give Rovers the points.

Pellegrino not feeling extra pressure

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists he is feeling no added pressure to deliver a successful Premier League campaign despite having already exited one domestic cup competition.

Defeat to Wolves in the League Cup has left Saints with only top flight matches and the FA Cup to focus on for the vast majority of the season.

After the midweek loss at St Mary’s in a competition in which Saints reached the final last season, Pellegrino insisted the positive was that his team would have more time to prepare for Premier League fixtures.

Despite that, he is not feeling greater pressure to deliver in them, insisting he is always under the spotlight.

“The pressure is at the same level with a good job. It’s included in the package,” he said. “We are under pressure every single day, we are always on the limit. It’s our life.

“We got the ambition to get better and improve the squad at different levels. We have to survive with this.”

He continued: “My pressure every day is to be better. When you do everything in your job and after this I am quiet and calm because when you try to be a better manager every single day, try to give my best for the players. This is everything, there is no more.

“It’s part of my job. We need result every time and right now in those moments, in our life, we need everything immediately.

“We need quick results, we need everything perfect. We need to be successful. We need to be quickly better than the others. But we have to think about where we are in the competition. At the end it’s a game.

“When you’re part of a game, you can win, lose and draw.”

Saints will look to recover from their Wolves loss this afternoon when they take on Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Pellegrino is hoping for a return to the form that saw Saints defeat West Ham in their previous game.

“I think we will continue in the same way that we had been playing the first two Premier League games,” he insisted.

“I think we have to use this game as a reference for us because I think we deserved to win those two games and it’s not easy.

“We have been playing on good performance and keeping going, try to learn from Wednesday.

“At the top level today when you are not focussed for five minutes or ten minutes and when you leave some details aside it is really difficult to win games and we have to know that.”

Pellegrino is determined to use the Wolves defeat as a learning experience and added: “The conclusion for us is we have to learn for every single step, for every single game.

“Obviously we want to bounce back. We know that we have a difficult game Saturday away against a tough team.

“We can draw some conclusions from every single experience.

“Obviously we are not happy with the result yesterday, the only positive thing for the future is we have more time to prepare better the Premier League games.

“Hopefully we can change. We need to react on Saturday to show another face.”
