It’s great to be back, says O’Connor

Show/hide article…

The 18-year-old midfielder missed the end of last season due to a hamstring injury, but returned on Monday night to play the final ten minutes away at Wolves.

“It was really good to get a few minutes,” started O’Connor.

“I had a hamstring injury near the end of last season, so it’s been almost four months that I have been out for. I am just glad to be back out playing and training now.

“It’s felt like a long time with all the hard work that you have to put in to get back fit and playing, so it was nice to get back out on the pitch.

“Hopefully I can get a few more minutes against Blackburn and can keep playing and training to impress the coaches and get back in the team.”

With his first minutes under his belt, O’Connor is now looking ahead to hosting Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League 2 this evening.

And the Irishman is hopeful that Saints can bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Wolves on Monday night.

“Obviously they [Blackburn] have had two good results to start of their season,” he continued.

“So we know it is going to be a tough game, but we are hoping to bounce back after the defeat last week and give it a really good go.

“We conceded from two set-pieces on Monday, so I think that is a big area that we want to work on. That and being better on the ball to create more chances.”

Mauricio Pellegrino calls on Southampton to bounce back from Carabao Cup defeat with Huddersfield next up

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has called for Southampton to bounce back from their midweek cup elimination and continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Saints go to second-placed Huddersfield on Saturday having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup at home to Sky Bet Championship Wolves on Wednesday.

The trip to West Yorkshire - which follows a draw against Swansea and a victory over West Ham at St Mary’s - will be manager Pellegrino’s first away game in charge of the club.

He is optimistic of an improved performance from his players.

“I’ve got the confidence that we will change,” said Pellegrino. "We have to react.

"Sometimes in this level when you are not focused for five or 10 minutes you are gone, and we have to learn from Wednesday and keep going.

"Obviously, we want to bounce back.

"We know we have to improve on Wednesday night and use as a reference our first two games in the Premier League.

“We have to prepare well but we are professional and prepared to compete.”

Saints will once again be without want-away Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, but there could be a debut for his compatriot and fellow centre-back Wesley Hoedt following his arrival from Lazio.

Pellegrino believes David Wagner’s Terriers will provide a stern test at the John Smith’s Stadium as they attempt to record a third-successive top-flight victory.

“We know that we will have in front of us a difficult game,” the Argentinian added.

"Huddersfield won the last two games and we know it will be really difficult on this pitch.

“They are an intelligent team with the ball and without the ball.”

David Wagner: Southampton are ‘different class’ to Newcastle

Show/hide article…

David Wagner expects a step up in quality as Huddersfield look to continue their flying start in the Premier League against Southampton.

The Terriers, back in the top flight after a 45-year absence, have won their first two league games of the season against Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

Saints are their next opponents at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday and Wagner is calling on supporters to ramp up the atmosphere for what he feels will be their toughest test yet.

Wagner said: 'From my point of view, and this should not be disrespectful for Crystal Palace or Newcastle, I think this is now the next level. This is a different class, a different category of quality in the Premier League.

'Southampton are a clear competitor for the top 10, maybe more. For this we have to be prepared. We are aware what is front of us and it is up to us to find the solutions to cause them some problems.

'For sure we have to make the John Smith’s Stadium a place where it is really tough for an opponent to come. This is not only our responsibility, this is the responsibility from the stands as well.

‘I know they will help us, I have trust and believe in them. They are aware what is front of us. We will only be successful with energy and atmosphere from the stands and intensity and quality on the grass.’

Huddersfield have not won their first three matches of a top-flight season since 1924 and another victory this weekend would make them the first newly-promoted Premier League club to do so since Bolton in 2001.

The game also comes just seven years after the clubs were playing each other in League One.

Wagner is pleased with the start to the campaign, which includes Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over Rotherham, but is not getting carried away.

‘It is only a start,’ the German said. 'Even if we have played well and got six points on the board, we know it is only a start. We can be happy with what we have done so far but it means more or less nothing. There are a lot of games to go.

'The circumstance is we have the chance to come into the first international break with a 100 per cent record and maybe able to write Premier League history. I am unsure how many teams were able to win their first three Premier League games.

‘But this is not in our head. In our head is only how we can be successful against Southampton. What we have done before is irrelevant. It doesn’t help us for what comes on Saturday.’
