Premier League grades so far: Man United’s top marks, Arsenal flop

Show/hide article…

After a breathless opening fortnight, the Premier League now goes on hold to make way for another raft of World Cup qualifiers. So how did your team do? Iain Macintosh grades the entire division.

Perfect. An entirely unblemished record. Admittedly, this entirely unblemished record has been secured against some of the weaker teams in the league, but that’s hardly their fault. Besides, if we’re all going to insist that the beauty of the Premier League is that, “anyone can beat anyone,” we really should acknowledge when it turns out that they can’t.

Let’s be honest, most of us though that it would take Huddersfield until November to get seven points on the board. Even David Wagner, effervescent and optimistic almost to a fault, would never have dared to predict three consecutive clean sheets. The Terriers have surprised everyone, but expect the analysts at West Ham and Leicester, their next opponents in the league, to spend the whole international break, feverishly searching for vulnerabilities.

Tony Pulis was so close to wrapping up this section of the calendar with a hat trick of 1-0 wins and then a mix-up between his new signing, the impressive Ahmed Hegazi, and his goalkeeper Ben Foster, allowed Stoke City to snatch a point. Still, seven points are not to be sniffed at. Thirty-three more and they can clock off early again.

That late equaliser against Watford on the opening day notwithstanding, there’s little to pick fault with here. Jurgen Klopp has successfully taken Liverpool into the Champions League group stages for only the second time in eight seasons and the performance against Arsenal suggests that they can do damage to anyone with that attack. The defence is less than convincing, but there’s still time to work on that

Once again, Marco Silva has made light of the doom-mongers. Watford were an unconvincing transient gloop of sweaty global assets last season and could easily have been relegated. Silva has given them shape, stiffened their resolve and picked up five good points. Had it not been for Miguel Britos’ horror tackle on Saturday, he might have picked up even more. This has been a very encouraging start.

Thus far, Manchester City have done little more than the minimum required. Two modest wins against two modest seaside teams, one secured in the 97th minute, will not yet have their rivals tossing and turning with anxiety. However, we have seen glimpses of what City will look like when they eventually click and they look absolutely terrifying. It will be worth waiting for.

After the shock of that spectacular opening-day defeat, Antonio Conte’s side have responded perfectly. They fought hard and smart at Wembley to earn themselves a much appreciated victory over Spurs and then they made short work of Everton at Stamford Bridge. Conte is still far from amused at his club’s summer dealings, but he doesn’t seem the type to go quietly into the night.

Sean Dyche’s legions picked up just seven points on the road last season, most of them in the final weeks. This season, they have four on the board already, thanks to stout-hearted showings at Chelsea and Tottenham. They remain one of the league’s most indomitable teams, physically strong and mentally resilient. And all this without big name departures, Andre Gray and Michael Keane.

With the Gylfi Sigurdsson saga complete, you sense that Swansea can finally move on now. And move on they did against a surprisingly abject Crystal Palace. Manager Paul Clement needed that, not only the points, but the composure and the control of the performance. Don’t read too much into the drubbing by Manchester United. This is a solid enough side to avoid the drop.

Everton’s hopes of gelling quickly were soundly dashed by the fixture computer, which cruelly handed them early games against Manchester City and Chelsea with Spurs and Manchester United to follow after the international break. They were flat at Stamford Bridge and could only draw with a reduced City side, but at least they beat Stoke. Only time will tell with this lot.

Another side to feel the wrath of the fixture calendar, Leicester were far from outclassed by Arsenal or Manchester United, while they quickly subdued Brighton at the King Power Stadium. Roma target Riyad Mahrez’s efforts have been crucial and Harry Maguire is proving an inspired signing. They won’t win back the title, but they could easily make a push for seventh.

When you consider how damaging the Virgil van Dijk standoff could have been to Southampton, you have to credit new manager Mauricio Pellegrino for steadying everyone’s nerves. The Saints have been blessed with a soft start, beating West Ham at home and sharing the points with Huddersfield and Swansea, but they’ll be pleased with the two clean sheets.

After three consecutive ninth-place finishes, Mark Hughes blotted his copybook with a poor campaign last year and the pressure has been building. But the capture of Jese Rodriguez is a masterstroke. If they could just find some consistency in the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Bojan, and if the real Saido Berahino would deign to turn up, they could still finish ninth again. That’s the dream anyway.

There’s no getting away from the fact that one point from a possible six at home is a poor return. Never mind that it was a lapse in concentration that cost them so dearly against Burnley, or a goalkeeping error against Chelsea. Slip-ups like that are expensive. But Spurs are hardly in crisis. They’ve had more shots than any other team in the league and poor old Harry Kane has hit the woodwork twice.

Boy, did Newcastle need that win against West Ham. After a troubled summer and the continued backroom wranglings that appear to be obligatory at St James Park, anything less than three points would have made the Magpies the crisis club of the league. But they’re not that bad. They lost by the odd goal at Huddersfield and were holding Spurs until Jonjo Shelvey intervened. They just need stability.

The Seagulls have a point on the board, but they haven’t managed a goal yet. Norwich City fans will allow themselves a wry smile, having experienced Chris Hughton’s top-flight caution before. But Hughton is no fool. That team, focused and spirited, will pick up points as the season unfolds. What he really needs is some firepower up front. But doesn’t everybody?

Bournemouth were desperately unlucky not to take a point from Manchester City last weekend, but the real damage was done against West Brom (beaten by a set piece) and Watford (worryingly outplayed). Eddie Howe’s side will always leave themselves open at the back, but they are inventive and attractive and you’d still back them to survive.

West Ham do not sack managers lightly and nor do their much-maligned owners. At Birmingham as in East London, Messrs Sullivan, Gold and Brady have demonstrated more patience with their staff than you might expect. For this, Slaven Bilic should be very grateful. It’s increasingly difficult to see what the plan is at West Ham and with 10 goals conceded already in three straight defeats, they need to find one quickly.

If the visit to Anfield was an examination, Arsenal turned up 30 minutes late, filled out the sheet by in green crayon and then fell asleep at their desk without making it to the second page. They only narrowly avoided defeat at the hands of Leicester, failed to avoid defeat at Stoke despite overwhelming possession and, by thunder, how much longer can this go on? If they somehow manage to lose to Bournemouth, what happens then?

In normal circumstances, talk of sacking the manager after just three games would be considered unhinged. But these are not normal circumstances. We always knew it would be hard for Palace to adjust to a more considered style of play, but it wasn’t supposed to be this hard. From the look of the Palace players, they either don’t understand or don’t want to carry out the instructions of manager Frank de Boer. They may not have to for very much longer.

What each Premier League club still needs as transfer deadline day approaches

Show/hide article…

The transfer window is ajar with the clock quickly ticking away ahead of Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

Some clubs are sitting pretty, happy with their business done during an intense period, others are desperately scrambling to bring in the players who can save their season.

Everton have been the big spenders so far but are still looking for someone to replace the goals of Romelu Lukaku on his move to Manchester United.

Chelsea have 38 players out on loan but are on the move to make some big deals while they still can - and they’re not alone.

With the countdown well and truly on, we take stock of which clubs have done what so far this summer and who is still looking for that magic ingredient.

Who have they signed?

The Gunners smashed their transfer record to recruit France striker Alexandre Lacazette for a reported £52.7million.

They also scored a bargain with the free transfer arrival of Bosnian left-back Sead Kolasinac from Bundesliga side Schalke.

What do they still need?

Arsene Wenger’s side has had its soft core exposed early in the season.

The Frenchman could do with a tough-tackling midfield destroyer to add some steel, in addition to another defender if Mustafi is sold.

Who have they signed?

Striker Jermain Defoe returned to the Cherries after 16 years away following his free transfer from relegated Sunderland, while goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and defender Nathan Ake both joined from champions Chelsea for a combined fee of around £30million.

What do they still need?

A defender and a midfielder. With captain Simon Francis sidelined through injury for the last two games, the Cherries have looked shaky at the back, particularly against Watford.

Manager Eddie Howe may also look to strengthen the middle of the park having not replaced Jack Wilshere, who was on loan from Arsenal last season.

Who have they signed?

Albion boss Chris Hughton has been busy; breaking the club’s transfer record three times to recruit goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, midfielder Davy Propper and winger Jose Izquierdo.

He has also brought in Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown, Austrian left-back Markus Suttner, young defender Ales Mateju, and midfielders Pascal Gross, Soufyan Ahannach and Mathias Normann.

What do they still need?

The Seagulls have not scored a league goal yet and, after seeing a move for FC Zurich striker Raphael Dwamena collapse due to a failed medical, they need to add a prolific forward to their attack. Everton’s Oumar Niasse and Cardiff’s Kenneth Zohore are reported targets.

Who have they signed?

The Clarets broke their transfer record for striker Chris Wood, who followed defender Charlie Taylor from Leeds.

Midfielder Jack Cork, forward Jon Walters, full-back Phil Bardsley and back-up goalkeeper Adam Legzdins have also arrived at Turf Moor.

What do they still need?

Manager Sean Dyche completed most of his transfer business early but he may still bring in another striker before the deadline with Ghanaian forward Abdul Majeed Waris, currently with French side Lorient, one of the men linked with a move to Lancashire.

Who have they signed?

Striker Alvaro Morata joined from Real Madrid for £56million, midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, defender Antonio Rudiger from Roma and ex-Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero moved on a free transfer.

What do they still need?

With Diego Costa in exile, Nemanja Matic sold to Manchester United, John Terry moving on and Caballero back-up goalkeeper after Asmir Begovic’s move to Bournemouth, the signings so far have been replacements.

Numerous young players have been allowed to depart on loan or permanently, so head coach Antonio Conte wants numbers as well as quality.

Who have they signed?

New manager Frank de Boer has recruited fellow Dutchman Jaido Riedewald from Ajax and loaned Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Manchester United to strengthen his defence. Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has also arrived on loan from Chelsea.

What do they still need?

De Boer is keen to bring in a new goalkeeper as he searches for the first league win since his appointment. The Eagles are also light in attack with a new striker needed to support first-choice frontman Christian Benteke.

Who have they signed?

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has brought Wayne Rooney back to his boyhood club, as well as strengthening the spine of his team with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, defender Michael Keane and creative midfielders Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaassen.

Striker Sandro Ramirez moved from Malaga, while full-back Cuco Martina was a free transfer from Southampton.

What do they still need?

Romelu Lukaku scored 25 times in the league last year and his big-money departure has left a void in Everton’s attack. Rooney, Sigurdsson and Klaassen will provide guile and plenty of chances but, with Spaniard Ramirez unproven in England, Koeman could do with an out-and-out goalscorer.

Who have they signed?

Town have made 13 summer signings, including paying club record fees for strikers Laurent Depoitre and Steve Mounie, from Porto and Montpellier respectively, and Manchester City midfielder Aaron Mooy. Goalkeeper Rob Green is the latest recruit.

What do they still need?

Head coach David Wagner said he was happy with the balance of his squad and the competition for starting places before Green’s arrival so the Terriers are unlikely to be involved in any more late transfer dealings.

Who have they signed?

Striker Kelechi Iheanacho joined from Manchester City for around £25million, while central defender Harry Maguire was one of two players to arrive from Hull, along with reserve goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic. Experienced Spanish midfielder Vicente Iborra was also brought in from Sevilla for just under £13million.

What do they still need?

Despite Maguire’s impressive early form, Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare appears keen on adding another centre-half to his ranks and has had offers rejected by West Brom for Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans.

Who have they signed?

Egypt winger Mohamed Salah was the big-money arrival at Anfield this summer, costing around £34million from Serie A club Roma. Boss Jurgen Klopp has also added Scotland left-back Andy Robertson to his squad from Hull, as well as Chelsea youngster Dominic Solanke. Naby keita has also signed for Liverpool - but will not actually join up with the squad until next summer.

What do they still need?

A new central defender is clearly a priority for Klopp, although a move for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk looks to have been scuppered. With the future of creative Brazilian Philippe Coutinho still in the balance, the Reds have been linked with a move for another attack-minded midfielder, with Monaco’s Thomas Lemar a possibility.

Who have they signed?

City have spent more than £200million in the summer window. Pep Guardiola will hope Ederson can be the ball-playing, shot-stopping goalkeeper he craves while Danilo, Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy should address last season’s full-back deficiencies. Bernardo Silva is an exciting young playmaker.

What do they still need?

A centre-half is clearly on the wish list after having bids rejected for West Brom’s Jonny Evans. It hardly seems necessary to add another attacking player but if Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez was available, there could be interest.

Who have they signed?

Jose Mourinho has spent big, securing striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton, tempting midfielder Nemanja Matic from former club Chelsea and signing Sweden defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica. Last season’s top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic has also re-signed.

What do they still need?

Very little. United have begun the season in impressive style and finally look as though they have a squad which can challenge for the title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.

Who have they signed?

Manager Rafael Benitez has made no secret of his frustration on the transfer front, although he has managed to make six signings. Striker Joselu, defenders Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo and wingers Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu have arrived on permanent deals, along with Borussia Dortmund loanee Mikel Merino.

What do they still need?

Benitez would still like to do significant dealings, and ideally wants a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and a striker. Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, Chelsea winger Kenedy and Sampdoria’s attacking midfielder Dennis Praet have been linked, but the Magpies will probably have to trim their squad first.

Who have they signed?

Gabon international winger Mario Lemina arrived from Juventus for a fee in excess of £15million, and he was followed from Serie A - for a similar fee - by Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt. Poland Under-21 centre-back Jan Bednarek was also picked up from Lech Poznan for around £5million.

What do they still need?

Ensuring defender Virgil van Dijk remains a Saint could be the trickiest task before the deadline. However, having failed to score in three out of four games in all competitions - on top of last season’s lack of goals - manager Mauricio Pellegrino could attempt a last-minute deal for a new striker.

Who have they signed?

Manager Mark Hughes looks to have made some shrewd acquisitions so far, with his summer dealings including adding the experience of Darren Fletcher to his midfield, the physicality of Kurt Zouma to his defence and the dynamism of Jese Rodriguez to his attack. Centre-back Bruno Martins Indi also made a permanent switch from Porto following last season’s loan spell.

What do they still need?

With the additions of Martins Indi and Zouma, the Potters look in pretty decent shape at the back, although reports have suggested Kevin Wimmer could be arriving from Tottenham to boost that even further. They still appear in need of another striker, given Saido Berahino is yet to get off the mark and it was veteran Peter Crouch who netted at the weekend.

Click here for more Stoke transfer news.

Who have they signed?

Striker Tammy Abraham has joined on a season-long loan and the Chelsea teenager has already scored a couple of goals in league and cup. Sam Clucas’s move from Hull could be potentially worth a club record £16.5million with add-ons, and Roque Mesa has also bolstered the midfield department following an £11m switch from Las Palmas. Erwin Mulder will provide extra goalkeeping cover.

What do they still need?

Head coach Paul Clement wants two new forwards - a winger and a central striker - before the transfer window closes. The onus is on finding a creative influence following the club-record £45million sale of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton. Nacer Chadli has been a long-time target and, while West Brom’s valuation of the Belgium international could prove a stumbling block, Swansea are confident that they will re-sign their former striker Wilfried Bony from Manchester City.

Who have they signed?

It has been a bit of a slow summer for Spurs fans. Money from Kyle Walker’s departure to Manchester City has been reinvested with the arrival of Colombia defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax, while Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was signed to provide back-up for Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

What do they still need?

Mauricio Pochettino has a strong starting XI, but his squad seems very small and reinforcements are needed if they are to challenge in the Premier League and Europe. They have little back-up for striker Harry Kane, while another midfielder would be welcome.

Click here for more Tottenham transfer news.

Who have they signed?

The Hornets broke their transfer record to prise striker Andre Gray from Burnley for £18.5million, while Will Hughes, Tom Cleverley and Nathaniel Chalobah have added some exciting English talent to their midfield. Spanish right-back Kiko Femenia and Brazilian winger Richarlison are already impressing following the respective moves from Alaves and Fluminense, and Peruvian winger Andre Carrillo has arrived on loan from Benfica.

What else do they still need?

A new left-back to provide competition for Jose Holebas is top of Marco Silva’s wish list. The Portuguese boss has also expressed his desire to bring in further reinforcements but was coy on specific names and positions. Injuries to Daryl Janmaat and Craig Cathcart, in addition to an early-season suspension for Miguel Britos, may mean an additional defender.

Who have they signed?

The Baggies have beefed up their striking options by bringing in Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for £11.6million and young Scottish forward Oliver Burke from RB Leipzig. Former England international Gareth Barry adds experience to central midfield following the departure of Darren Fletcher, with Egyptian Ahmed Hegazi signed to bolster the defence.

What do they still need?

Manager Tony Pulis is keen to add another central midfielder. Brazilian 28-year-old Josef de Souza, playing in Turkey with Fenerbahce, is one option reportedly being assessed, although that deal could be slowed down by the need for a work permit.

Click here for more West Brom transfer news.

Who have they signed?

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic broke the club’s transfer record to sign £24million winger Marko Arnautovic from Stoke and splashed £16million on Mexico striker Javier Hernandez. Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta arrived from Manchester City, and teenage Montenegrin midfielder Sead Haksabanovic came from Halmstad.

What do they still need?

A defensive midfielder. William Carvalho is the target but negotiations with Sporting Lisbon are proving difficult. Bilic says it is him or no one, but that stance will surely change following West Ham’s disastrous start to the season. Brentford winger Jota could be a late addition.

Loan Watch: Olomola continues fine Yeovil form

Show/hide article…

The Glovers made it back-to-back home wins at Huish Park, with Rhys Browne giving them a first-half lead.

And Olomola was on target for his fourth goal in five games to seal all three points when his burst forward ended with his firing the ball across the keeper.

Elsewhere, Sam Gallagher was handed his debut for Birmingham City as they lost 2-0 to Reading in the Championship.

The striker played the duration as second-half goals from Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and George Evans saw the Royals claim all three points.

Harrison Reed was also on the losing side as Norwich City went down 4-0 to Millwall at the New Den.

Reed played 49 minutes before being replaced by attacking midfielder Marco Stiepermann.

In League One, Ryan Seager suffered defeat with MK Dons as they lost 4-1 to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Seager, who scored his first goal for the Dons in the League Cup against Swansea, played 77 minutes before being replaced by Sam Nombe.

North of the border, Harry Lewis fell to defeat for the first time this season as Dundee United lost 3-0 at St Mirren.

Lewis Morgan struck twice, before Ian McShane’s first St Mirren goal sealed the win, with Dundee United slipping to fourth.

Premier League summer signings - rated

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs have just three days left of the summer transfer window to add to their squads following a hectic few months of wheeling and dealing.

Scored within two minutes of his Premier League debut against Leicester and had another controversially ruled out at Stoke. Encouraging start. RATING: 7/10

Started with a goal in the Community Shield victory over Chelsea and has impressed with his all-action approach and desire to get forward Was not involved in the hammering at Liverpool. RATING: 7/10

Two goals and two assists in his first three games has already gone some way to repaying the hefty fee as he bids to replace Diego Costa. RATING: 8/10

Not really the start England’s most expensive ever player would have wanted after he was sent off in the 1-1 draw with Everton. RATING: 5/10

Made his debut in Saturday’s victory at Bournemouth and looked a little short of fitness but still managed to be a danger going forward. RATING: 6/10

The pick of his performances came against the Cherries, where he moved the ball superbly and linked up play to a level City fans have become used to from namesake David Silva. RATING: 8/10

Yet to feature in the Premier League, with his only action so far coming in the Carabao Cup defeat by Wolves. RATING: 5/10

Another player returning to his Premier League club following a successful loan spell, the Dutchman has picked up where he left off. RATING: 6/10

Showed good work rate and an ability to fly forward with the ball at his feet. RATING: 7/10

Typically neat and tidy since his move from West Brom, Fletcher has added class to the Stoke midfield. RATING: 7/10

Another upgrade, this time in defence. The Chelsea loanee has made a solid start to life at the bet365 Stadium. RATING: 7/10

Made the best possible start to life in England as he swept home the only goal of the game in his side’s victory over Arsenal. RATING: 8/10

So far the Welsh club are waiting for any kind of return on the £11m they spent on the Spaniard, who has started two games in which they have conceded four goals. RATING: 4/10

Scored 26 goals for Bristol City and looks to be making the step up well with two in his last two for the Swans. The second came in the Premier League victory over Crystal Palace: RATING: 7/10

Made his debut at Palace and was his typical dynamic, hard-working self. RATING: 6/10

Davinson Sanchez, a £42m buy from Ajax, is Tottenham’s only summer signing to date. He made his debut in the 89th minute of the 1-1 draw with Burnley at Wembley.

No goals so far for the English striker who has frustrated sections of the Watford support with his performances, despite their impressive league position. RATING: 6/10

Has made a hugely impressive start to life in English football, with his first goal, againsts Bournemouth, setting his side on the way to victory. RATING: 8/10

Has proven himself to be a Swiss Army Knife of the Watford midfield so far this season, playing deep and in more advanced roles. RATING: 7/10

The young playmaker has long been linked with a step up to the Premier League, but his move has so far yielded just one appearance in the Carabao Cup. RATING: 6/10

Finally has a permanent home after years of being shunted out on loan by Chelsea, and his impressive form has seen him rewarded with an England call-up. RATING: 8/10.

Has played all three Premier League games, helping his side keep two clean sheets. Good start. RATING: 7/10

Two goals in his last two games, including one in the Premier League against Stoke which looked to have set his side on the way to victory before Peter Crouch’s equaliser. RATING: 7/10

As expected, Barry has been a calming influence and an experienced head in midfield following his move. RATING: 6/10

The defender scored on his debut against Bournemouth to secure the three points for his side, which remains unbeaten. He was, however, partially at fault for Peter Crouch’s equaliser for Stoke on Saturday. RATING: 7/10

Yet to see his true ability, in part due to the fact he was stupidly sent off for leaving an elbow in on Southampton defender Jack Stephens, in a game his side went on to lose. RATING: 3/10

West Ham fans hoped they would be getting the same player who scored some important goals for Manchester United, and it looks like they have. The Hammers may be struggling but Hernandez has two goals already, now they just need to translate them into wins. RATING: 7/10

Brought in to add some experience to the West Ham defence, but it’s not started hugely well. Zabaleta has played all three Premier League games, with the Hammers leaking 10 goals. RATING: 5/10

The Englishman conceded all of the aforementioned 10 goals, and has now not kept a clean sheet in club football for 23 games and 216 days. RATING: 5/10

Chelsea target Cedric reveals he’s happy at Saints

Show/hide article…

Chelsea target Cedric Soares has revealed that he is happy at Southampton as deadline day closes in.

The Southampton defender was one of a number of players the Premier League champions were considering as an option to bolster their ranks in the right wing-back position, with Victor Moses currently without serious competition.

However the Portuguese international, who was part of the squad which won Euro 2016, has said that, despite the speculation, he is happy on the south coast.

“I have a contract with Southampton and I am working every day like I always do. I am professional,” he told the Daily Echo.

“Of course a player likes to know some big teams are interested in us and it’s normal. We work every day.

“I have a contract. I am focussed and what happens will happen.

“I have a contract and I am doing my best here.

“I am always professional and I am happy.”

The Blues, though, are closing in on a deal for Arsenal man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who Antonio Conte sees as an option at right wing-back despite his desire to play in midfield.
