‘Professional’ Cedric unmoved by transfer speculation

Show/hide article…

Cedric Soares insists he has no problem with honouring his Saints contract despite being linked with moves to Barcelona and Chelsea during the transfer window.

The 25-year-old right back penned a new deal last summer that boosted his wages and tied him to St Mary’s until 2020.

There has been constant speculation that a bid will come in for the Portuguese Euro 2016 winner, but Cedric has focussed on his football and appreciates his end of the bargain.

He said: “I am have a contract with Southampton and I am working every day like I always do. I am professional.

“Of course a player likes to know some big teams are interested in us and it’s normal. We work every day.

“I have a contract. I am focussed and what happens will happen.”

He added: “I have a contract and I am doing my best here.

“I am always professional and I am happy.”

Cedric’s comments will be welcomed by Saints fans fretting over the future of Virgil van Dijk in the final days before the close of the transfer window.

Saints have been adamant that the Dutchman, who like Cedric signed a new deal last summer, is going nowhere, despite the 26-year-old handing in a transfer request.

Though the close of the window on Thursday night is clearly a priority right now, Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is also trying to work with the players who have not disappeared for international duty as he looks to build on an unbeaten start to the club’s Premier League campaign.

Certainly Cedric has been impressed by Pellegrino and his methods.

“The coach is very good and we are happy to fight for him,” he said.

“We are trying to do our best and I am sure Southampton will always be in the right way.

“I think we have every player improving.

“The coach has good ideas for the team, and tactically wise we are improving and we can see this. I think in the future we will be playing better.

“I think we have good games starting the Premier League. Last game (against West Ham) we had to win and did win and this (Huddersfield) was a tough one but we are in a good way and we have to keep working.

“He wants to play out, he knows the game, he understands the game.

“He knows the places we need to achieve and tactically wise I think we are improving a lot because he is good.

“Definitely we are in the right way but of course it takes time. I am sure all the players understand his message.”

“The players are motivated and they want to keep working hard for Southampton and we are in a good way.

“We didn’t lose (against Huddersfield), a clean sheet is also a positive out of it and we could have scored two or three times from very clear chances.

“Football is like this and we need to work our way to win.”

Saints youngsters face tough opener

Show/hide article…

Saints under-23s face a tough battle tonight as they start their Checkatrade Trophy campaign at Peterborough.

While for Saints taking part in the competition is all about gaining experience, their opponents tonight have made it clear they are trying to win it.

The Posh are in fine form as well as they sit atop of League One with a perfect start to the season after notching four wins from their first four games.

Tonight’s match at the ABAX Stadium is sure to be a difficult one for Saints with Peterborough keen to improve on their showing last season which saw them fail to get out of the group stages.

Boss Grant McCann said: “Part of my remit is to win the Checkatrade Trophy so it goes without saying that I want to win the game on Tuesday night.

“We were beaten heavily by Norwich City in the first group game last year and that left us chasing the group.

“We want to start well but know it will be difficult because Southampton have a strong crop of youngsters.”

Saints were in dominant form in the group stages last season.

They topped their group with two wins and a draw, but fell in the first knockout round as they were beaten on penalties at home to Reading.

This year’s group looks competitive but not a completely daunting prospect with Peterborough favourites to rival Saints for the top spot.

The other teams may have other things on their minds with Northampton currently bottom of League One having failed to collect a single point so far this season while Cambridge are in the lower reaches of League Two.

A change to the format this season means Saints must play all three group games away from home.

Martin Hunter will lead the side with Saints set to field a genuine under-23 team rather than boosting the ranks with a few fringe players from Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad.

Peterborough are going to go into the game with a strong team with one of their star players, 21-year-old Jermaine Anderson, likely to play on his comeback from injury.

“Jermaine is ahead of schedule and it was great to get him some minutes on Saturday,” said McCann.

“He will get some more minutes against Southampton. He is a good player, you know he can bring a lot of energy into midfield. We are looking forward to the game.”

Jurgen Klopp plans Virgil van Dijk signing as part of £183m triple swoop

Show/hide article…

Liverpool yesterday made Naby Keita the most expensive signing in their history after paying his £48m release clause a year before it activates.

But they are set to immediately smash that mark by making a £75m offer for Southampton rebel Van Dijk ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline, according to The Sun.

Thomas Lemar is the final piece of the jigsaw, with a £60m offer to be lodged for the Monaco winger.

Liverpool attempted to sign Van Dijk earlier this summer but were dramatically forced to abandon the move.

Southampton caught wind of their alleged illegal approach and threatened to report them to the Premier League.

Players aim to impress Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Saints’ next generation will be looking to show Mauricio Pellegrino they have what it takes to step up to first team level as they compete against Football League opposition.

The club’s under-23s open their Checkatrade Trophy campaign at League One Peterborough tonight.

They will face another League One team in the shape of Northampton and League Two Cambridge over the course of the group stages of the competition.

Though the format has been tinkered with this season, the objective for Saints is still the same – to give their youngsters a learning experience.

There has been a feeling in football that the academy set-up leaves young players cosseted, only playing against each other rather getting the kind of raw experience they require to continue their professional journeys.

The Checkatrade Trophy matches are meant to help with that, and offer clubs the opportunity to get their players game time against season professionals rather than the only alternative to the under-23 set-up being a loan spell.

Saints have this season balanced the two, with a few youngsters heading out on a temporary basis, while the rest remain at base to learn.

Saints would like to progress in the competition having had a somewhat fallow period.

They were relegated from the top under-23s division, Premier League 1, last season.

They have started this campaign with a win and two defeats.

Amongst those hoping to impress is creative midfielder Callum Slattery, who helped England to win the under-20 Toulon Tournament.

The club’s newly signed 22-year-old keeper Jack Rose is also expected to play tonight, along with the likes of Will Wood, Armani Little and Tyreke Johnson, who spent a brief spell with Pellegrino’s squad in pre-season.

The competition is something Saints relish, and looks to have a healthy future – despite dwindling attendances last season - after a number of other Premier League clubs entered this year after declining their invite last time out.

EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey said: “The history of the EFL Trophy is one of new ideas and innovation, but at its heart has always been the belief that this is an opportunity for League One and League Two clubs to taste cup success.

“I am therefore delighted to see the backing the Checkatrade Trophy has received from our clubs for the next two seasons, following a full and comprehensive review of the pilot format.

“We wanted to ensure that League One and League Two Clubs had the opportunity to make the key decisions regarding where we take the competition in 2017/18 and beyond and I believe we have reached a revised format that benefits all parties.

“EFL clubs will have greater flexibility with regard to team selection, while still maintaining the principle that this is a first-team competition for our clubs that will support the development and progression of young players. The competition will also provide significant financial rewards for all EFL clubs, which increases with success.”

Hunter: A great test awaits

Show/hide article…

Saints, who were invited to take one of 16 spots for under-21 sides in the competition, begin their group-stage campaign this evening when they visit the ABAX Stadium to take on Grant McCann’s high-flying team.

Peterborough have won their opening four matches of the season to claim top spot in League One, and Technical Director Hunter believes that, while an extremely difficult test awaits, it will be one the Southampton players can benefit greatly from.

“It will be extremely tough,” he said. "They’ve obviously made a great start to the season, we’re playing away from home and it will be a young team, so in terms of a test it will be a great one for them.

"Pitting their wits against a men’s team will be difficult, so we’ll see how they match up.

“They need to cope with the pace and power. They’ll need to cope with the ball moving about more than they would be used to, and their decision-making will have to be spot on, otherwise they’ll be punished, so for their development it’s important, but we know what a big test it will be.”

This is the second season in succession that Saints have been able to field a young side in the competition, having reached the knockout rounds last term.

This time, they will face three away games in the group, with trips to Cambridge United and Northampton Town to follow this evening’s clash.

“It was terrific last season,” said Hunter. "Some of our Under-23 players got great benefit from it, so we’re hopeful of the same this year.

“This season we’ve got three away games, so you’re playing at league grounds in front of a crowd, so it’s a great test, and a great way for them to learn and to get another rung up the ladder.”

Virgil van Dijk to Arsenal: Southampton will ask Gunners for Theo Walcott swap deal

Show/hide article…

Arsenal have been handed a boost in the hunt for Virgil van Dijk

The Gunners fancy a swoop for Southampton central defender Van Dijk and Theo Walcott could be crucial to Arsene Wenger landing his man.

The Saints are reluctant to let the Holland international leave St Mary’s, despite freezing him out of the first team.

But, according to Tribal Football, they will sanction a deal with Arsenal for Van Dijk if forward Walcott is thrown into the mix.

Walcott began his career at Southampton before joining Arsenal at the age of 16 in 2006.
