U18 Report: Saints 1-0 Brighton

Show/hide article…

Fresh from a 3-0 win at Reading last time out, Saints recorded another clean sheet – their third in a row in the competition – and picked up another full complement of points, in the clash at Staplewood Campus.

Saints started impressively, with Kornelius Hansen firing a free-kick from 25 yards just over inside two minutes.

The threat from the home side continued, and Michael Obafemi went close after ten minutes, as his surging run into the left side of the area saw him power past a defender before prodding just wide of the far post from a tight angle.

Shortly afterwards, Will Smallbone produced another promising moment, with a long-range drive that whistled a yard or two over the bar.

The pressure continued, and Obafemi again nearly broke the deadlock, as his speed saw him dispossess Brighton keeper Tom McGill in the area, only for the ball to just run away from the Saints forward as he won it.

There was a reminder midway through the half, though, that the visitors were not without a threat of their own, as they worked the ball to Isaac Hutchinson 20 yards out, with his fierce drive being brilliantly turned round the post by a diving Alex Cull.

Brighton had another decent sight of goal in the 24th minute, as Stefan Ljubicic was judged to have been tripped by Kornelius Hansen just outside the box, but Jayden Onen bent the resulting free-kick well over.

The tide of the game had turned a bit by this stage, with Albion now on the front foot, and a nice move on the half-hour mark ended with Hutchinson feeding Ljubicic in space on the left edge of the area, only for his curling effort to come back off the bar.

Saints responded, though, as Javen Siu played the ball into Hale 25 yards out, with the midfielder spinning, then going past one defender with nimble footwork, before firing a low, left-footed drive inches wide from the edge of the area.

Moments later, the action went back up the other end, as a loose ball fell to Ryan Longman just inside the box, but his low shot was straight at Cull in the Saints goal.

There were no changes for either side at the break, with the home team carving out the best opportunity at the start of the second half, as Will Ferry brilliantly lifted the ball over his man on the corner of the box, before finding Hansen, whose low strike on the turn was superbly saved by McGill.

Captain Christoph Klarer earned a good sight of goal after 63 minutes, as Hansen’s in-swinging cross from the left picked out the centre-half, who had remained forward from a free-kick, but he glanced his header wide.

Back at the other end, Albion also went close with a headed opportunity, but Longman’s effort from Hutchinson’s driven free-kick bounced just wide.

It appeared as though the game was heading towards a goalless draw, but Saints finally made the breakthrough with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Obafemi showed excellent strength to hold the ball up in the area, laying it off to Hale, who struck a firm low shot past McGill from inside the corner of the area to give Craig Fleming’s side another win.

Southampton players must defend the shirt, says Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has spoken to the squad this week about Cedric Soares’ assertion that they “gave up” against Liverpool and has warned there can be “no repeat”.

Saints host struggling Everton on Sunday live on Sky Sports looking for a win that would ease the pressure that is growing on the manager after only 12 matches.

The side has won only three league games since Pellegrino replaced Claude Puel and they are 14th in the table going into the weekend fixtures.

Discussing last week’s 3-0 defeat by Liverpool, the defender said: “We did not start badly, but after the first and second goal we gave up a little bit and our reaction was not the best.”

But Pellegrino remains confident his methods will lead to long-term success and, after confirming he had spoken to his players, said: "It could be possible [we gave up].

"The team felt that maybe the other side were stronger than us and it is something that we can’t repeat. You always have to defend your colours until the end, even when you are losing, to try and change the situation.

“Suddenly, you can score one goal and anything can happen. This is something for me that is a part of our character and a part of our learning. We have to be optimistic and try to learn from difficult situations.”

Pellegrino has one or two potential selection problems ahead of the game against Everton.

Mario Lemina is facing a late fitness test on an ankle injury at a time when fellow central midfielder Oriol Romeu is suspended. If he has not sufficiently recovered, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a possible replacement.

The manager has revealed he is ready to rotate the team in the busy weeks coming up despite being consistent so far with his selections.

He added: “Most of my players in our squad are ready to play and that’s something that is good because we start now with a period of time with a lot of games and my squad is ready to compete and I’ve got options in different positions.”

Fleming delighted with resilient Under-18s

Show/hide article…

Harlem Hale’s 79th-minute strike gave Saints a third consecutive victory – and a third clean sheet in a row – in the Under-18 Premier League.

The hosts had to work hard for the three points at Staplewood Campus, and Fleming was pleased with how his players battled for the points.

“We probably haven’t reached the heights there that we have done in previous weeks, but testament to them, they dug in and ground out a result really,” he said.

"In recent weeks we’ve probably been better in possession and creating a lot more chances and really putting teams to bed, but I thought there they really showed the other side, which is just as pleasing in all honesty.

“We’ve been working for a few seasons now on trying to teach them the other side of the game. Technically they’re very good players – Southampton’s famed for it – but we’ve been trying to get them really hard to beat, difficult to play against and resilient, and they’re showing it now, week in and week out.”

The decisive moment came when Michael Obafemi showed tremendous strength to win and hold the ball up in the area, before laying it off to Hale, who took a touch and despatched a low shot into the bottom corner.

Fleming said: “Michael’s been tremendous. I thought first half he was almost unplayable at times. His pace is very, very good, and really pleasing for Harlem again. He’s got electric pace as well, and end product is something we’ve been working on with him and obviously great for him to get the goal.”

Pellegrino: We must show character and spirit

Show/hide article…

Saints host Everton, at St Mary’s, on Sunday, as they look to end a run of three Premier League games without a win.

Pellegrino has been extremely appreciative of the backing the fans have given his side this season, but says the team must help them in generating an atmosphere through their performance.

“We respect the people and I think the people have to receive the messages from the people on the pitch,” he said. "We have to show our character from the beginning and our spirit as a team, and this for me is the most important thing.

“The people will receive our messages, and we are responsible to do it. I think we are prepared, we are ready and we have to do it.”

Pellegrino added: "It will be really positive for us to see how we can react after the last game and it’s another opportunity to show how we are in this moment.

"It would be three important points, because we need to get some positive results to try to improve our confidence and our belief in our job.

“We play against a good side, who are not in a good moment – Everton more or less feel the same like us. They need to get a result, but we are ready to play.”

Jaïdi searching for positive reaction

Show/hide article…

After a disappointing showing against Fulham last time out, Southampton’s youngsters have the chance to respond in North Yorkshire on Sunday, but face a side who have only lost once in this year’s Premier League 2 competition.

“The main thing is a positive reaction,” Jaïdi reiterated. "We always look for the players who show a bit of resilience and a good attitude to overcome failure.

"From a positive point of view, we created a lot of entries [against Fulham] and a lot of chances, but we didn’t score as many. This is something we must keep working on. Hopefully the boys will show more quality and focus up front tomorrow.

“We need concentration and commitment from players. As coaches we keep working on that.”

Speaking directly about Sunday’s opposition, Jaïdi added: "Middlesborough have a core group of players, the same players who began the season, they all know one another. It is a tough test, especially playing away.

“It will be physical at times. But it is about how we’re going to impose ourselves during the game, players who are willing to address things.”

Tella: We’ll have to be at our best

Show/hide article…

A hat-trick in the Senior Cup was followed by a goal and an assist against Premier League 2 opponents Fulham earlier in the week, and the teenager is relishing the challenge of competing in the club’s more advanced age groups.

“I feel like I’ve adjusted to 23s well,” Tella began. "Made an impression when I joined and the boys have really helped me adapt. I’m really enjoying it.

"Obviously it is nice to get a goal and to help the team in as many ways as I can. In terms of the team, it was disappointing that we couldn’t get the result we wanted. We’ll look forward to putting that right on Sunday.

“After the injury I picked up, I’m back scoring goals now which is good for confidence. I feel like I’m beginning to reach full fitness again which is helpful.”

Saints face a tough test against a Middlesborough outfit who have only lost one league game over a largely successful campaign and are unbeaten in their previous three outings.

Tella added: "Middlesborough are obviously a good side, we’ll have to be at our best. The table shows they’re the best team in the league at the moment. It is exciting, they’re clearly playing good football.

“It’ll bring out the best in our team and test us to see how good we can be.”
