Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino: No fears over my job

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has no concerns over his post at Southampton

Saints fans are calling for Pellegrino to be axed if the south coast side fail to beat managerless Everton at St Mary’s.

But a defiant Pellegrino, who has only been in charge for 12 games, said: “I’m scared about a lot of things - but not about my job.

“The biggest risk is to work in football, because you need results all the time.

“It’s a really nice job with a lot of situations that I know and I knew in my past as a player and as a manager and it’s part of our situation.

“Everything can happen or can change in one or two games.”

Liverpool v Chelsea tips and odds, with Eden Hazard in a 33/1 shot

Show/hide article…

Liverpool and Chelsea have served up some crackers over the years but if their managers are looking forward to this week’s Premier League teatime tussle at Anfield, they’ve a funny way of showing it.

Antonio Conte was an angry man despite a Champions League win at Qarabag – having to make a mammoth trip back from Azerbaijan a whole 24 hours after Liverpool’s quick hop from Spain didn’t fill the Italian with much joy.

But surely he watched the Reds in midweek. Conte’s opposite number, Jurgen Klopp, now there’s a man who really did have something to moan about after his shambolic defence surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw with Sevilla.

It wasn’t a great way to ready themselves for a Chelsea side who have scored four goals in each of their last two matches and beat Manchester United in the one before that, but the Reds start at Anfield no better than 6/5 with the visitors 5/2 and the draw available at 13/5.

Our 9/1 Saturday single winner last week was a 3-0 victory for Liverpool over Southampton - unsurprisingly a home win by the same score this week is much longer odds. You can get 25/1 but as famous Liverpudlian Les Dennis used to say: ‘If it’s up there I’ll give you the money meself.’

Liverpool have been good going forward but the rearguard is too big a worry against the likes of Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata and at the price on offer it’s easier to side with the Blues.

Both teams have scored in 11 of the last 12 Premier League meetings between these two and a Chelsea win with the net rippling at both ends is 5/1. Conte’s men are 12/1 to win 2-1.

Mohamed Salah is the obvious pick for Reds fans – he’s top of the scoring charts with nine goals and he’s facing his former club. The Egyptian is 6/1 for the opener and 19/10 at any time with Morata heading the betting (9/2 and 8/5). Hazard has three in his last two games and is 15/2 to break the deadlock.

Backing the last goalscorer could be the way to go in the Manchester United game when they host Brighton at 3pm.

United were in fine, flowing form as they saw off Newcastle last weekend with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovc returning and Romelu Lukaku getting back on the goal trail.

Ibrahimovic made a second substitute appearance in Basle and while his side went down to a late goal, no one seemed too bothered.

If the big Swede starts on the bench again, take him at 16/5 to have the final say.

United are 38 games unbeaten at home in all competitions and Brighton aren’t about to change that. We had Jose Mourinho’s men at 15/8 to win both halves against Newcastle and although they’re no better than 7/5 for the same again this week, they’re worth taking. You can also get 9/5 they win minus two goals on the handicap.

Another returning striker is Christian Benteke and oh how Crystal Palace could do with him starting to fire now he’s fit again. Since shipping nine goals to the two Manchester clubs, Palace have beaten Chelsea drawn twice and lost 1-0 to Newcastle and Spurs. They can feel hard done by after Everton’s dodgy penalty last week and a much-needed win isn’t too far away. Stoke are unbeaten in three but Palace can edge this. They’re 23/20 for the win, 11/4 to win by one goal and 5/2 Benteke in the score-win double.

We know it was ‘only’ West Ham but Watford did look good last Sunday when a 2-0 win snapped a run of three straight defeats. Newcastle would love to halt their own similar miserable run having lost to Burnley, Bournemouth and Man United and won just one of their last seven. They shouldn’t lose this one but it’s hard to see them getting a win if Richarlison is still in the mood. The young Brazilian has been involved in six goals in his last seven Premier League games (four goals, 2 assists). He’s 11/4 at any time and any score draw is 18/5.

Elsewhere, Swansea face Bournemouth while Spurs, who didn’t take long to get over the derby defeat as they beat Borussia Dortmund in midweek, should be backed to batter West Brom. They’re 7/4 to win both halves.

On Sunday, Arsenal head for Burnley and the dust had hardly settled on last week’s north London derby when pundits started asking which Arsenal would turn up at Turf Moor. It’s a fair enough question. The one who beat Spurs could easily tank Burnley but the other Arsenal, the one we see more often… The Gunners do have a habit of fluffing their lines at the strangest times but against Burnley they’ve won their last six in all competitions, stretching back to 2010. They’re 4/7 to make it seven in a row but 15/4 to win after being level at half-time.

Manchester City are also on the road, at Huddersfield, while managerless Everton travel to Southampton.

Opposition View: Everton

Show/hide article…

Everton coach David Unsworth is looking for a response from his team against Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday after a disappointing defeat in the Europa League during the week.

The Toffees – already eliminated from the competition - went down 5-1 to Serie A outfit Atalanta at Goodison Park on Thursday night and Unsworth is grateful that the trip to the south coast has come around so quickly.

“Luckily, in football, there is always another chance to recover. I asked the players last night to give me a selection problem for the Southampton game, they haven’t done that but this is a very important fixture for us.

“Together we will come up with a game-plan for Saints and we will pick the team we think is right for the game.”

Late fight backs have seen Everton recover from losing positions to collect four points from recent encounters with Watford and Crystal Palace and the former full-back is looking for more of the same commitment this weekend.

“We have improved in spells in the league this season, coming back against Watford and Crystal Palace to pick up a win and a draw were important steps. We need to show the same fight here to get us up into mid-table and away from danger.

“The players who played in those games have the passion for the fight. It is important we get those players back into the team and squad and, hopefully, repeat those performances.

“Southampton are a good team that passes the ball well. We have to show courage to go out and perform and deliver a result for the supporters.”

Match Preview: Saints vs Everton

Show/hide article…

Saints welcome Everton to St Mary’s in Sunday afternoon’s Premier League action and we’ve broken down the key information ahead of kick-off…

THE MATCH

Southampton vs Everton

Sunday 26th November, 1:30pm GMT

St Mary’s

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

With only a point between Sunday lunchtime’s opponents, the St Mary’s clash appears, from the outset, of vital importance to both clubs.

Saints suffered defeat to a rampant Liverpool side last weekend, while Everton twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with bottom-placed Crystal Palace.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men could climb in to the top half of the table with victory, as the middle-third of clubs remain entwined by a mere three points.

The visitors’ form has taken a slight upturn of late, with four points from a possible six in November, as caretaker manager David Unsworth continues to steer the Merseyside outfit away from the drop zone.

Encouragingly, Saints have only lost one of their last eight home league meetings with Everton (W4 D3), while the Toffees are currently winless in 14 away Premier League games – their second longest such run in the competition.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton’s midfield could be bolstered by the return of Mario Lemina, who has resumed full training this week. Oriol Romeu has however been ruled out after accumulating five yellow cards. Matt Targett is also unavailable.

Everton’s longterm absentee list is shortening, as Yannick Bolasie is said to be progressing well after rehabilitating a knee problem. Although Ross Barkley continues to nurse a hamstring injury and Seamus Coleman is out until the new year.

Tom Davies is suspended and there are further questions over the fitness of Phil Jagielka (groin) and Morgan Schneiderlin (toe).

FORM GUIDE

Southampton’s previous five:

Liverpool 3-0 Southampton

Southampton 0-1 Burnley

Brighton and Hove Albion 1-1 Southampton

Southampton 1-0 West Brom

Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

Everton’s previous five:

Cédric has fired in 59 crosses from open play this season; 11 more than any other player in the Premier League, but is yet to register an assist.

The Portuguese full-back’s contribution may yet prove fruitful if Mauricio Pellegrino elects to field two strikers tomorrow, with Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini all fit and available.

A forgotten face at Everton for 12 months, Oumar Niasse has earned a deserved recall to first team reckoning after netting six times in nine appearances this season.

One EFL Cup goal, as well as five Premier League strikes have meant the Senegalese international is beginning to provide suitable return on his £13.5M price tag.

Two goals in as many games, against Watford and Crystal Palace, have helped Everton earn four points, but the in-form striker will be forced to sit out tomorrow’s St Mary’s outing through suspension.

DID YOU KNOW?

Everton’s Oumar Niasse has scored in his last two Premier League starts – having scored in just one of the 15 previous games he started in the competition.

No team has scored more penalties than Saints or Everton in the Premier League so far this season (3, level with Man City).

Pellegrino working on new ideas and solutions

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino revealed he is constantly studying new ideas and solutions as he tries to pull Saints out of the mire.

Ahead of welcoming Everton to St Mary’s tomorrow in a HUGE must-win Premier League showdown, Saints have won just once in seven matches.

But Pellegrino is working hard on turning their ailing fortunes around.

“We are changing players, we are trying to change the qualities and are looking for new ideas," he said. “It’s something that we did and we are doing.

“We are trying new ideas and new solutions and obviously for me we try to choose the best eleven every single week.

“We don’t see much the opponent, we try to follow our principle and our style because I have to defend the quality that we’ve got in the squad.

“We will do all we can to see a team who will manage the ball, to put the ball on the ground and try to be patient.”

Saints have won just four games in 16 home Premier League fixtures in 2017 and Pellegrino has urged his team to show their “character”.

“The first thing is to be conscious that we have to take responsibility for ourselves and try to show our character – because different moments in games are good,” he said.

“The best thing you can draw conclusion from in difficult moments is that you will know how the people are in this situation, which people want to help the team and which people will be humble to do their his best for the team.

He added: “For me attitude and character is everything in our life. There are a lot of people with talent, but talent is irrelevant when we talk about teams.

“The problem is when you play every single week they are a human being playing football and sometimes they don’t have the same pressure, the same energy and it depends a lot on the situation. This is part of our life.”

Win over Everton will give us belief, says Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino believes Sunday’s Premier League clash against an Everton has come at the right time for the Saints as they look to get their season back on track with a win against a team low on confidence.

Southampton have been inconsistent this season and sit 14th in the table after 12 games with three wins, four draws and five defeats as they head into a tough period with games against five of the top six left this year.

Like their rivals, Everton have also struggled, with four defeats in six games since caretaker David Unsworth took over from the sacked Ronald Koeman, and Pellegrino is aware a first victory in four games will ease the pressure on his team.

“It will be important, because we can change our face, increase our confidence in our job, our players, our beliefs, and the people who work around the team,” Pellegrino said.

”Everybody needs a good game, but the most important thing is trying to play the game that we deserve to win.

Southampton sacked Claude Puel at the end of last season after the Frenchman helped the club to eighth in the league but Pellegrino said he was not worried about his job or the prospect of a relegation battle just yet.

“When we think about the end of the last season, between eighth and 17th, there were six points. ”We’re talking about 10 teams and six points. The Premier League is really tough, and a lot of teams are in similar situations.

”Everything can happen or can change in one game, two games. I‘m not scared about my job. I‘m scared about a lot of things, not about my job.

“We have to fight for every point. We are three points from eighth, or four points away - to be in the top of the table or the bottom.”

Everton are 16th in the league and come into the game on the back of a 5-1 thrashing by Atalanta in the Europa League.
