Manchester City vs Southampton live score and goal updates - latest here

Show/hide article…

Can anyone stop Manchester City? Southampton are the latest club to attempt to bring Pep Guardiola’s runaway train to a halt.

The Saints shone in Sunday’s 4-1 rout over Everton, while City scraped a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield.

But the result protected City’s ‘invincible’ start to the season as they continue to lead the charge in the title race.

So, could Southampton spring a surprise and inflict City’s first Premier League defeat of the campaign?

The game is not on British TV screens but fans in the US can live stream it via the NBC Premier League pass football app.

Pellegrino: City clash "a huge opportunity”

Show/hide article…

Sunday’s four-goal show at St Mary’s marked the high point of Southampton’s season so far and the boss hopes that a combination of momentum, composure and big-game anticipation will produce an even better performance in Manchester tonight.

“Difficult games like this are huge opportunities to raise your game and show you can play above your normal levels.

“The main thing for me is to see my team compete against one of the best sides in the world at the moment. It is a good chance to measure our progress.”

Saints’ attacking intent came to the fore against the Toffees in some style and while accepting that there will be periods of the game in which his side will need to defend resolutely, Pellegrino wants to see his charges pose a new challenge for the league leaders.

The two teams occupy two of the top five positions for passes completed in the Premier League this season and the Argentine is keen to see the visitors stick to their possession-based instincts at the Etihad.

“This is a chance for us to put the play on the floor and move them around. City have not had to run behind the ball so far and they are not used to it.

“Of course, there may be moments in the game when we will have to defend more than usual but we have to be ready for that and adapt.

“The margins between winning, drawing and losing are so narrow in the Premier League. What matters is how we are training and the spirit we have to improve.”

This meeting with Pep Guardiola’s side will be the second of three in the space of seven days.

Returning trio Charlie Austin, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and James Ward-Prowse all impressed at the weekend, and with Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina also available for this evening, the boss is confident that the entire Saints squad is ready to contribute both here and to a busy winter schedule.

“We’ve got a big group and most of them are ready to play now. It’s not about numbers, it is about preparations.

“James, Charlie and Pierre haven’t played recently but showed that they are prepared against Everton and credit for that goes to them and our coaching staff. It is good news for the club to be in this position.”

Højbjerg delighted to seize his chance

Show/hide article…

The Danish midfielder has had to wait his turn, but seized his chance with a man-of-the-match display in Sunday’s 4-1 victory over Everton.

It was a first Premier League start of the season for the 22-year-old, who admitted there were a few more pre-match nerves than usual.

“It’s always nice to be given the chance to show what you’re capable of – that’s always a big joy,” Højbjerg said.

“Of course I was nervous and I had adrenaline flying around. I had to go to the toilet a couple more times!

“I didn’t feel pressure from the outside or from anyone else, but I always put pressure on myself.

“You always have that little bit of nervous energy and unsureness in small amounts, but this is also what gets the blood pumping and makes you feel alive.”

For any footballer, time on the sidelines requires plenty of patience.

“When you haven’t been able to do what you love the most, which is to play football, that’s tough,” he admitted.

“It sounds like a cliché that you would read in a book from every sportsman, but you need to keep fit and sharp, train well and do the right things every day. You need to prepare every week as if you are playing.

“I played some games with the under-23s to keep fit and for me it was important to play well so that when I was given a chance, I would be ready. This was the only thing that was important to me.

“If you’re not playing, you can’t just sit on the couch waiting for something to come about. I was fighting for my situation.

“Not playing can mean many things. It can mean being angry and not doing anything about it, or it can mean ‘ok, I’m going to show you that I’m ready to play’.

“That was my mission. It’s far from being accomplished, but Sunday was a big step.

“I was coming home not being satisfied every single day. On Sunday I was a little bit satisfied, but then I start again.”

Højbjerg revealed the role his teammates have played in keeping him motivated.

“Everyone pushes everyone,” he added. “You’re not only competing together, but you’re also competing against each other in a fair and respectful way.

“That’s how you get everyone to the next level – fitness, technique, concentration. That’s how you get another dimension to the team.

“It’s not like I just come in and don’t speak to anyone. You have some older players who come to speak to you and say ‘well done today’.

“Whether it’s Dušan Tadić, Ryan Bertrand, Cédric, Charlie, Virgil…they give you confidence and recognition.

“That’s also what gets you going – the people around you recognising your work.”

Saints return to action on Wednesday night against runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

It’s a fixture that pits Højbjerg against his former boss, Pep Guardiola, having worked under the Spaniard for three years at Bayern Munich.

“He is so demanding in every aspect of the game, not only with his team but the people around him – the whole staff and the whole club,” he said.

“Coaches like him are very rare. He’s very much 100 per cent in everything he does – maybe his only weakness is that he wants to control everything. It’s very black or white.”

So how has Sunday’s win affected the mood inside the Saints dressing room?

“It’s a big boost of confidence. We scored four goals and were a well-organised team playing good football.

“We know City have an amazing team and are having an amazing season, so it’s going to be our most difficult game so far. But what do we have to lose? All the pressure is on them.”

That’s not to say there won’t be any pre-match nerves, but that’s no bad thing.

6 potential transfers that you need to know about as the January window looms

Show/hide article…

Roll up, roll up, get your January bargains!

The transfer window is just one month from re-opening - and it could be what makes or breaks your team’s season.

Each of the Premier League’s top six have been known to spend in recent transfer windows, with Chelsea the most prolific mid-season buyers.

Stamford Bridge chiefs have shelled out on average £17million every January between 2002 and 2016.

Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool spend on average between £10.6m to £8.6m, with Arsenal and Manchester United paying £6.5m each winter.

But which of those clubs are going to be splashing the cash when the window opens in one month’s time?

We’ve rounded up the six potential movements that you need to keep your eye on…

Mesut Ozil will be offered £350,000-a-week to move to Barcelona.

The Spanish giants are interested in signing the Arsenal star, who is out of contract at the end of the season and could command a huge pay-day next summer.

Manchester United chief Jose Mourinho is also keen, and Ozil may be tempted to link up again with his former Real Madrid boss at Old Trafford.

But the Germany international is allowed to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club from January 1 after reaching a stalemate with the Gunners over a new deal.

There is a growing belief that Ozil - whose representatives have been seeking a £350,000-a-week deal for him to stay at the Emirates - will leave next summer and is now getting big offers from top European clubs.

It has left Arsenal facing a major dilemma over whether to try to cash in on him during the upcoming winter window or let him and striker Alexis Sanchez - a target for Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain - both walk away for nothing after the season. (John Cross)

Chelsea have been given the chance to snap up Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January.

The Gabon international is available following the breakdown of his relationship with the German club.

Aubameyang has netted 17 goals in 19 games this season but his campaign has been peppered with controversy and Dortmund have had enough.

Chelsea are among a number of side to have been made aware that he is on the market with just over a month to go before the transfer window reopens.

Boss Antonio Conte is looking to increase his options up front as his Premier League champions trail in the wake of current leaders Manchester City.

First-choice Alvaro Morata has eight top-flight goals this season but has admitted he is struggling with the demands of playing three games a week while back-up Michy Batshuayi out injured. (Darren Lewis)

Manchester United are ready to offer Danny Rose an escape route out of Tottenham .

Jose Mourinho will target the England left-back for a January switch to Old Trafford after Rose was left out of the squad for north London derby defeat at Arsenal earlier this month.

United are ready to pay £40million for the 27-year-old – and also offer Luke Shaw as a makeweight.

Rose, who has just returned to fitness after being sidelined for 10 weeks with a knee injury, was not included in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans as Spurs’ title hopes were hit by a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their arch rivals.

Tottenham insist there has not been a bust-up between player and manager. (Simon Mullock)

Daniel Sturridge is ready to quit Liverpool in January to save his World Cup dream.

The 28-year-old marksman has often found himself as an unused substitute for the Reds — despite scoring twice in recent appearances.

His decision to cut his losses will spark a mid-season scramble, with Sturridge still seen as one of the country’s most gifted finishers.

The marksman was among seven high-profile stars axed by Gareth Southgate for the prestige friendlies against Germany and Brazil earlier this month, with the England boss naming him as one of the big-hitters not getting enough game time to be included in his current plans.

Fearing his situation is unlikely to change at Anfield over the remaining months before next summer’s tournament in Russia, Sturridge is set to follow the likes of Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere in seeking a fresh start to get his career back on track.

Sources close to him are hoping Liverpool will put a realistic price-tag on his head when the transfer window reopens.

A loan deal is even a possibility, despite the Reds rejecting such an approach from French giants Paris Saint-Germain last winter. (DL)

Manchester City 's Pep Guardiola could spark a tug-of-war for Virgil van Dijk after confirming he will target a new defender in January.

Liverpool , long-time admirers of the £60million-rated Dutch centre-back, are set to pounce after Southampton recently revealed last week he could now be up for grabs.

But City boss Guardiola was hunting defensive reinforcements for his Premier League leaders even before John Stones was ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury suffered on Saturday.

Guardiola said after the 2-0 win away to Leicester earlier this month: “We’re going to discuss when January is coming.

“We are going to think about it, but not because John is in that position.

“To play in all the competitions, you need a bigger squad because the players don’t have time for regeneration before the next game.”

Van Dijk has so far indicated to friends that he has his heart set on a move to Anfield. (DL)

Watford winger Richarlison - already on Tottenham’s transfer radar - is attracting interest from China.

Brazilian starlet Richarlison joined Watford in the summer in a £11.2m deal and has caught the eye of big clubs with his performances.

Chinese clubs are now reported to be monitoring the situation while Tottenham and Arsenal have also been watching his progress.

The 20-year-old signed a five-year deal at Vicarage Road in the summer, but after netting five goals in his first 12 Premier League games, he has attracted a number of admirers. (JC)
