Pep Guardiola is a unique manager, says Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg insists there is no other manager in world football like Pep Guardiola.

Hojbjerg spent three seasons under the guidance of Guardiola during his time at Bayern Munich and the Dane is set to face his former boss when Southampton travel to take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Guardiola has guided City to 12 league wins out of a possible 13 at the start of the campaign and Hojbjerg is not surprised the see the Spaniard excel in English football.

“He is different to other coaches, there is no one like him,” said Hojbjerg. "It is remarkable to be [so] successful, to be the only one that is his type and to play a style of football where you are winning titles and getting the best out of players.

"Everyone loves to see it - it is something that doesn’t come very often, it’s very rare. Everyone that has worked with him knows, he demands so much from himself, he puts so much pressure on himself that he works, and works on even the smallest details.

“Every single day, every single moment, he’s trying to find new ideas, new ways of developing different aspects of the game. He is always aiming for a little bit more and this is fantastic to see in another human being and football coach.”

Hojbjerg says he would relish the opportunity to work under Guardiola again at some point later in his career.

“Every player that has a good relation with him enjoys 100 per cent to work under him every day,” said the Dane.

"You get angry, you get frustrated, emotional, happy - you feel strong when you have him. He gets everything out of you.

“If one day I had a chance to work with him again, I think every player would say ‘yes please’.”

Manchester City are already eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after an unbeaten start to the campaign but Hojbjerg insists Southampton can help to reignite the title race with a shock victory at the Etihad.

He said: "They have a great team, great players, and great characters. They are among the contenders for the Premier League so it is maybe the most difficult game of the season.

“But they have had a lot of games, in the Champions League, in the Cup, playing aggressive demanding football. You know how football is, there is always a chance.”

Transfer news: Brighton and Southampton eyeing Espanyol striker Leo Baptistao

Show/hide article…

The 25-year-old has struck three times this season and has been linked with a move away in January.

Roma are said to be keen on landing the Brazilian, who left Atletico for Espanyol in July 2016.

Brighton and Southampton, according to Calciomercato, are also interested in Baptistao and could move for him too when the transfer window opens.

Both clubs are looking to sign a striker and they believe the Brazilian would be willing to come to England.

Genoa are also said to hold an interest in Baptistao, but it is understood he would prefer to join Roma if he left for Italy.

Manchester City team news: Predicted XI for Premier League clash against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Manchester City will be looking to navigate the hectic Premier League fixture list with their 100 per cent record intact over the next month.

First, though, they must defeat a Southampton team who will be confident on the back of a 4-1 victory over Everton.

The Citizens have won an incredible 18 games on the bounce in all competitions and could potentially move 11 points clear, should Manchester United fail to win on Tuesday.

It’s likely, though, Pep Guardiola will rotate his squad as he looks to keep his superstars fresh over a busy month of football.

Manchester City expected XI: Pep Guardiola to play this 4-3-3 against Southampton?

Show/hide article…

MANCHESTER CITY take on Southampton in the Premier League tonight - here is our predicted City line-up.

Pep Guardiola’s side had to come from behind to take all three points against Huddersfield on Sunday.

Nicolas Otamendi’s own goal in first-half stoppage time put the Terriers in front at the John Smith’s stadium, but Sergio Aguero levelled proceedings from the penalty spot early in the second half before Raheem Sterling snatched victory six minutes from time.

The 2-1 triumph extended City’s winning streak in the league to 11 matches, with the only blotch on their record so far coming in a 1-1 draw at home to Everton on the second day of the season.

And tonight they welcome Southampton to the Etihad as they seek a 12th straight league win.

Guardiola will be without long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy, whilst John Stones is still out after picking up a hamstring injury earlier this month.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City must face the pressure of being Premier League champions-elect as they host Southampton on Wednesday.

A late 2-1 win at Huddersfield on Sunday saw City restore their eight-point advantage over Manchester United at the top of the table after just 13 games.

The manner of City’s celebrations in Huddersfield suggested Guardiola and his players knew what a key win it could be in the context of the title race, and many pundits have already declared that they are uncatchable this season.

Southampton have been far from their best so far this term, but a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Everton on Sunday will send Mauricio Pellegrino’s Saints to the Etihad Stadium on a high.

Man City host Southampton at Etihad Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 8pm on Wednesday, November 29.

The match will not be televised like in the UK.

You can follow all the build-up and goal updates from 7pm with Standard Sport’s live blog.

John Stones is out for six weeks with a hamstring injury, joining long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy on the sidelines.

Pellegrino’s ‘important news’ as he finds squad equilibrium

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino believes he’s reached a point of perfect equilibrium with his Saints squad at a very important time.

With Saints facing nine games in the space of a month, Pellegrino has been attempting the “difficult” task of getting his group of players ready for a jam-packed period, which continues at Premier League leaders Manchester City tonight.

After seeing the superb performances against Everton last Sunday of previously bit-part players – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Charlie Austin and James Ward-Prowse – the 46-year-old boss reckons that Saints are now well-equipped for the busy period.

“As a manager I am delighted because when you have a squad with 25 players it’s really difficult to have everybody motivated and ready to play,” he explained.

“I feel that we’ve got a lot of players who are ready to play and it’s something at the beginning I couldn’t say. Now I feel most of them are ready to play.

“We have now in the next two months a difficult fixture list and for me it’s important news for us, because it’s not easy coming from the bench, from the outside.

“Even Pierre and Charlie – Prowsey, okay, played more – but when you’re usually on the outside it’s really difficult to be on the same level. Most of them played really well.”

Hojbjerg was superb against the Toffees, while Austin netted a brace in the 4-1 win and Ward-Prowse produced a solid performances.

It certainly gives Pellegrino options, with Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina back in starting contention tonight and Maya Yoshida eager to win back his place at centre-back from Wesley Hoedt.

He said: “I prefer to have problems to make a decision instead of having problems because you don’t want or you don’t know who will play.

“This is something that happens when you’ve got enough of a squad.”

Pellegrino admits it hasn’t been easy to keep everyone happy, especially with so few games this campaign compared to last term, when Saints competed in the Europa League and went all the way to the League Cup final.

“When you’ve got more competitions to play in like last season, but now we play in just one competition it’s not easy to keep the same mentality,” he said.

“They are professional but first of all they are human beings and sometimes they don’t have the same confidence or the same preparation because the best training session for me is to play games.

“When you don’t play - we try to move them in the reserve games, try to do friendly game - but never is it the same.”

The former teammates spent a season together in Spain, sharing a dressing room at Barcelona during the 1998/99 season, which consequently ended in La Liga conquest.

Under the Catalan manager’s stewardship, Man City recorded their 18th successive win at the weekend, and attention has now turned to Saints’ visit to the Etihad.

“We have made a good recovery,” Guardiola asserted, after a tough test in West Yorkshire against Huddersfield.

“We are preparing for a mentally tough game against Southampton. I watched some Southampton games a few weeks ago.

“Mauricio made an amazing job at Alaves last season. They had a lot of young players and a really good team.

“We were together for one season. It was an amazing experience. He was so curious about football – he was always talking tactics.

“I am very pleased that tomorrow, I will see him after a long time. On the pitch, he had a lot of courage. He was an intelligent player. We had a great relationship and I have a lot of memories of him."
