Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah tops Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings for a second week running.

Salah netted his sixth league goal in five games during a 1-1 draw against former club Chelsea, with substitute Willian (No 122, up 81 places) levelling the scores late on.

Eden Hazard retained his No 2 spot after grabbing a fortunate assist for Willian’s cross-shot goal, which the Brazilian later claimed was an intentional strike on goal, while centre-back Cesar Azpilicueta also held his place at No 9.

Manchester City suffered a scare at Huddersfield on Sunday after trailing 1-0 at the break, before Sergio Aguero (No 120, up 41 places) converted a penalty and Raheem Sterling (No 21, up 37 places) grabbed a late winner.

However, only Kevin De Bruyne (No 3, no move) and Fernandinho (No 6, down two places) represented City in the top 10 this week, with the former retaining his place atop the season chart.

Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri (No 4, up 30 places) scored a customary stunner from range during a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace, while Richarlison (No 7, up eight places) and Will Hughes (No 8, up 51 places) broke into the top 10 after Watford claimed a 3-0 win at Newcastle.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (No 5, up five places) converted a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot against Burnley, with team-mate Shkodran Mustafi (No 10, up 43 places) soaring 43 places up the chart to make No 10.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino complained about West Brom’s time-wasting in their 1-1 draw at Wembley.

Baggies keeper Ben Foster was even spotted kicking the ball away from a ballboy in the first half as Spurs lost ground on their title rivals in their frustrating encounter.

However, statistics show the ball was in play for 61 minutes and 26 seconds, the third highest in the Premier League this weekend.

So where else do fans see more football played than anywhere else? Scroll through the gallery to see the team that keep the ball in play, on average, more than anywhere else.

Is this how to keep Gabriel Jesus and Co on a leash?

Show/hide article…

Manchester City’s victory at the weekend against Huddersfield fostered beliefs that Pep Guardiola’s side could go unbeaten the whole Premier League campaign.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling completed a second-half comeback after they had initially gone one goal behind at the John Smith Stadium.

The three points saw Guardiola’s team set a new record for highest points tally in the top flight after 13 games with 37.

Next up for City is a home tie against Southampton and their boss Mauricio Pellegrino will be wondering how he can possibly derail them.

Guardiola’s side have already begun preparations for the clash at the Etihad Stadium and trained in windy and wet conditions on Monday.

Gabriel Jesus was snapped during the session taking part in an intensive resistance exercise with coach Domenec Torrent.

Unfortunately for Southampton a resistance band will not be available for them to use to tame Gabriel Jesus and Co come Wednesday night.

But they will have to find some way to stop City or face the prospect of being just another victim on their long list of victories.

Southampton will have to contend and nullify several of their star players if they want to register some kind of result.

All of City’s stars, who will be a huge threat to Pellegrino’s side, were out on show on Monday as they trained at the Etihad Campus ahead of the fixture.

There was a certain kind of togetherness and atmosphere around the players during the session, the kind that comes with the territory of sitting eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Leroy Sane was seen laughing and joking with club captain Vincent Kompany, with the latter seen putting his arm around him for a cuddle.

The mood in the City camp seems incredibly high at the moment with Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne also spotted laughing during the light-hearted training session.

England international, Sterling, who has been in sensational form this season, was pictured smiling as he took part in a fitness drill.

Guardiola has earned several plaudits for the way he has coached Sterling and improved him as a player, with the winger already surpassing his goalscoring haul for Liverpool four years ago and City in the 2015-16 season.

Kyle Walker took to Twitter after the training session to praise the City boss, writing: ‘every day’s a school day! #mancity’.

With United facing a testing trip to Watford on Tuesday, Guardiola will be eager for his side to pick up another three points to put further distance between them and their second-placed rivals.

Manchester City are beatable at the Etihad, insists Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is convinced his Southampton side can be the first team this season to beat Manchester City after seeing Huddersfield go agonisingly close.

Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring side have produced some sensational performances so far this season, winning 12 and drawing once to open up an eight-point gap in the Premier League over second-placed rivals Manchester United.

City, however, needed a fortuitous winner from Raheem Sterling to scrape past the Terriers on Sunday afternoon and Pellegrino believes that game shows it is possible to take points off them.

“Nobody is unbeatable in football and in sport,” manager Pellegrino said ahead of Wednesday night’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.

"Every single team has got problems, because yesterday Huddersfield were really close to getting something.

"We have to be on the top if we want to have any chance.

“Hopefully it could be a nice day for us.”

Saints travel to the north-west on the back of Sunday’s morale-boosting 4-1 victory over struggling Everton at St Mary’s.

That result brought to an end a three-game winless run which included a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Burnley and a comprehensive 3-0 loss at Liverpool.

“We’ll play against one of the best sides in the Premier League, it will be really tough for us and we will need to be 100 per cent with our performance and our attitude if we want to have any chance,” the 46-year-old Argentine added.

"It’s incredible how they can sustain their performance every single game, playing mostly with the same players.

“To be in the top team the first thing that you need is to create a mentality to try and to do it and I think now they are in an amazing moment.”

Man City are not unbeatable: Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino insists Manchester City can be defeated as he prepares to take on the unbeaten Premier League pacesetters.

City, however, needed a lucky late winner from Raheem Sterling to scrape past Huddersfield on Sunday and Pellegrino believes that game shows it is possible to take points off them.

That result brought to an end a three-game winless run which included a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Burnley and a comprehensive 3-0 loss at Liverpool.

Argentinian Pellegrino knows his players need to be at their optimum to earn a positive result against City and has called for them to produce a better display than they managed at Anfield in their previous away game.

‘We’ll play against one of the best sides in the Premier League, it will be really tough for us and we will need to be a hundred per cent with our performance, a hundred per cent with out attitude if we want to have any chance,’ the 46-year-old added.

'It’s incredible how they can sustain their performance every single game, playing mostly with the same players.

‘To be in the top team the first thing that you need is to create a mentality to try and to do it and I think now they are in an amazing moment.’

Dream Team: Austin leads Saints trio

Show/hide article…

Handed a first start of the season, Charlie Austin’s two goals and 13 points in the 4-1 win over Everton brought him to the attention of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Along with Southampton team-mates Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic, the striker is among eight players who earn their Dream Team debuts as the line-up shifts to a 5-4-1 formation.

The stalemate with AFC Bournemouth brought only a second clean sheet in eight Gameweeks, helping Fabianski earn a second Dream Team call-up. The Pole has claimed 12 points for saves this season, totalling 51 stops - nine more than any other goalkeeper.

The Hornets defender makes his Dream Team bow in only his second start with the highest individual score of Gameweek 13. Playing at left wing-back, Zeegelaar produced two assists in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United and has created five chances over his two appearances.

A stoppage-time winner against Stoke City was Sakho’s first goal for the Eagles. Along with a pass completion rate of 93%, it helped the Frenchman claim maximum bonus points, despite conceding in the 2-1 victory.

The right-back made eight recoveries and seven clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) in Swansea City’s clean sheet against AFC Bournemouth, claiming the maximum three bonus points and nine overall.

A first Dream Team appearance arrives courtesy of his pair of assists in the Saints’ 4-1 victory over Everton. They were Bertrand’s first attacking returns of the season, having supplied two goals and five assists in 2016/17.

A standout performance in the 1-0 win at Burnley produced 10 CBI and two key passes, ensuring the Frenchman maximum bonus points. Arsenal have six clean sheets over the last 10 Gameweeks ahead of a home meeting with Huddersfield Town, who are without a goal in their last five away matches.

An eighth goal of the season - along with an assist and three bonus points - helped claim a third Dream Team berth. Sterling is now averaging 7.1 points per match. Only Paul Pogba (£8.0m and 7.7) and Mohamed Salah (£9.7m and 7.3) can better that among midfielders.

A former FPL favourite from previous seasons, his 10 points in the 1-1 draw with West Ham United were enough to secure a first Dream Team appearance of this campaign.

The Serb produced his first double-figure haul, just as Southampton’s fixtures turn against them. With five of their next eight matches scoring four or more in the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR), the 1.9%-owned midfielder is likely to remain a differential.

Three goals and three assists from his last seven outings suggest that Sanchez is edging back to the form that made him the top-scoring player in 2016/17. Since Gameweek 6, only Harry Kane (£12.8m and 40) has fired more shots than Sanchez’s tally of 31.

Like Tadic, the striker has timed his ascent as an FPL option ahead of some testing fixtures. However his two goals and five shots inside the penalty area - joint-top in Gameweek 13 - hint that Austin could still yet become a viable cut-price option.
