Pellegrino: I just kept the faith

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insisted he didn’t do anything special to mastermind Saints’ four goal romp against Everton, and instead simply kept faith with his methods.

Saints went into yesterday’s match against Everton having scored just six times in their previous 13 home games.

But they completely defied those stats with Charlie Austin scoring twice while Dusan Tadic and Steven Davis also got on the scoresheet.

“It’s something that happens in football,” said Pellegrino.

“I didn’t do any special things, just keep believing, keeping going and we created a lot of chances like a lot of games at home when I think we deserved a lot of points.

“But sometimes is like this, you can score four goals like today, and sometimes like against Huddersfield not, but this is part of football.”

It was a big performance from Saints after a horrible defeat at Liverpool and Pellegrino added: “Football is everything – is character and trying to play well, good ideas with spirit and attacking performance, and for me the best thing after the equaliser in the first half, we continued in the same way with patience.

“We spoke about needing not to rush, don’t follow the anxiety of the crowd because sometimes instead of help us it is against, but I’m really happy with this.

“Also for some players who came from the bench and it’s not easy at this level, like Charlie and Pierre in this case.

“I am really happy because my players have been working really hard this week, we deserved to win and that’s the most important thing.”

As well as a recall for Charlie Austin, there was also a first Premier League start under Pellegrino’s management for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who impressed in midfield.

“I felt before that they are ready to play,” admitted Pellegrino.

“I said before the game that right now most are ready to play which is good news for us as we have difficult fixtures over next months and we’ll need all of them.

“In my squad now most are training really well. When you came from the bench like Prowsey, Pierre or Charlie and play in this way it’s not easy.”

He continued: “The most important thing the first half we played well but after the equaliser, the team was patient, and continued playing in the same way.

“I think after scoring the third one it was easy for us with the space from Shane and we create a lot of chances.

“Always from beginning I felt people got behind us and I have to be really pleased with our fans. Southampton was born from a difficult moment not too many years ago.

“The people know and the people are supporting our team and this victory is also for them.”

Bertrand reveals Saints discussions and how Pellegrino “really got hold of us”

Show/hide article…

RYAN Bertrand revealed that manager Mauricio Pellegrino “really got hold of us and got us into shape” in the lead up to Saints’ huge 4-1 win over Everton at St Mary’s.

Saints looked a beaten and despondent outfit after losing at Liverpool 3-0 last weekend, but Pellegrino got his team together and galvanised them ahead of the thrashing of the Toffees.

It was a big reason for the win, according to Bertrand.

“It was just getting back to basics: a refresher. We got back to basics. It was nothing drastic and the manager really got hold of us and got us into shape and we gave him that performance,” Bertrand said.

Part of the team’s meetings during the week were to pull together as a unit and create a change of attitude.

The left-back said: “It was easy to fix. We just needed a refresher and start really putting the work in. Small adjustments paid dividends.”

“We put that all to bed during the week. We got together as a group and analysed what we needed to do and do more and we came together and put a good performance on for everyone.”

“It wasn’t a serious one,” he added, talking about the discussions. “There is no danger but we’ve done well the last few years and we’ve got big expectations now, so we weren’t happy with a lot of things.

“Everyone thought we should have more and deserve more, so we needed to get back to that.”

The 28-year-old reckons the Everton win, which saw Charlie Austin score twice and Steven Davis and Dusan Tadic net one goal apiece, is a turning point in their season - and lifts the pressure they’ve been feeling at St Mary’s recently.

Bertrand, who has helped Saints to three successive top eight finishes in his spell at the club, believes they’ve been battling to deal with the high expectations that Saints’ success in recent seasons has put upon them.

“There’s that expectation there now. We’ve had so many solid seasons since I’ve got to the club. We’ve experienced fantastic seasons, consistently finishing comfortably within the top ten. I’m not just talking top ten, but right up there,” he said.

“What comes with that is expectation and we have to keep the level and that’s what we want to get back to.”

He continued: “You have to be realistic but I think reaching top ten is realistic. We need to do that but consistently; not just scrape it in there but be there convincingly.

“When you think of the league it should be a no brainer to put Southampton in there - in the top eight even.”

During the recent run prior to the Everton victory Saints had won once in seven games and there were fears Pellegrino’s men were heading for a relegation scrap.

But the squad had faith that it wouldn’t get to that.

Bertrand said: “It’s never been like that. I’ve been around all situations in my career and nothing ever like that has come into the thought process here.

“Even though we’ve been on not such a good run, if you look at it we’re far better than most teams in this league, so it was only a matter of time.

“Notoriously we always have a little dip before Christmas and always manage to come out of it no matter what the fixtures.”

Bertrand is now looking forward to testing themselves against Premier League leaders Manchester City on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium.

“Definitely, now we’ll go there Wednesday and give a good account of ourselves,” he said, when asked if the Everton win is a turning point.

“They’re doing well at the moment. We’ll look to build on this and go into the game at the weekend hopefully building on what we do on Wednesday.”

“We’ve got the win and on Everton’s form we were expected to win. Let’s go and test ourselves and test them and go there and really test ourselves in the game and enjoy it.”

THE VERDICT: A vital six minutes for Saints

Show/hide article…

What a difference 90 minutes can make. What a difference six minutes can make.

Two Charlie Austin goals in the space of next to no time to lift his side to victory against Everton may just have transformed Saints’ season.

At the very least it has eased the pressure Saints and manager Mauricio Pellegrino have been feeling.

Saints so desperately needed to beat Everton at St Mary’s.

Having failed to accumulate the points they should have done up until this stage of the season, and early into a very difficult run, bagging a win against an Everton side in disarray was imperative.

The script was written for Saints if they failed to get three points, and it would have read ‘a long few months ahead.’ This is hardly the full stop at the end of proceedings, the end of doubts and problems, but is a huge step in the right direction.

For all the fears over where Saints have been heading in recent weeks there is at least a small crumb of comfort. Against the bottom five Saints have amassed four wins and a draw this season, which hardly suggests they are going to get dragged into a huge battle for survival.

Whether it proves to be a campaign that offers much more, in an upwardly direction, is still to play for.

There will be those who inevitably say this was a case of playing the right team at the right time.

Undoubtedly that was a factor. Everton were a shambles. Embarrassingly bad.

They only seemed to have any type of sustainable game plan once a player went off injured and they were forced to change to five at the back, but even then it didn’t last.

Their team looked as they had already played 90 minutes when the game kicked off, such was their general lethargy.

However, to just pinpoint Everton’s inadequacies would be unfair.

Saints also went into the game low on confidence, especially after the 3-0 beating at Liverpool.

They were under pressure at home, and had to produce.

They were being asked questions about their character and spirit.

They could have faltered, hidden, but they did not.

Instead, Saints stood up to the challenge, looked it square in the eye and produced the goods.

Pellegrino changed things around, giving Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg a first start of the season, and getting Charlie Austin involved from the beginning, and it worked.

There was somebody to convert the crosses into the box, and Hojbjerg, clearly with a point to prove, produced a hungry performance.

Saints took full advantage of Everton’s early incompetence and battered them from the start.

Indeed, they should have taken the lead long before they did – and that was after only 18 minutes.

Jordan Pickford had to save from a deflection off of one of his own players, Phil Jagielka, before Charlie Austin spurned two great chances.

They were both about eight yards out, the first falling to him via Virgil van Dijk’s deflected knockdown from a corner, which Austin put well over the bar, The second came thanks to Cedric Soares getting the better of Gylfi Sigurdsson with embarrassing ease and playing in a low near post cross which Austin met but could only direct against the outside of the post.

When Saints did eventually get the breakthrough it came as a result of good play down the left that culminated in Ryan Bertrand playing in Dusan Tadic.

The Serbian managed to bring the ball under control and, off balance, stab a shot that rolled past Pickford and into the net.

Saints also had a penalty shout turned down after Michael Keane blocked a Steven Davis cross from the right. It clearly struck the Everton defender’s arm but referee Kevin Friend decided that from close range it was not deliberate.

The nearest Everton came to testing the Saints defence before their enforced change was when Kevin Mirallas threatened to get in behind but a heavy touch allowed Fraser Forster the chance to sweep up.

However, after the change of formation and their slight and slow growth into the game, Everton got a goal out of nothing.

Sigurdsson, so much more threatening in a central role, cut back outside to create himself a few yards and hit a right footed shot from 20 yards out.

It curled over and beyond Forster, struck the underside of the bar, the inside of the post, and then the underside of the bar again before settling in the net.

If that was a blow to Saints and a boost to Everton, it didn’t show as Saints scored twice in six minutes shortly after the restart.

Austin gave them the lead again on 52 minutes, flicking a header off the well-used underside of the bar after Sofiane Boufal had chipped the ball to Bertrand and the left back had whipped in a sumptuous cross.

The striker headed home again, once more grateful to static Everton defenders, this time Tadic supplying the left wing cross.

That really was game over. Everton’s wafer thin confidence was shattered and Saints were in total control.

Substitute Shane Long nearly ended his long scoring drought but was denied by the fingertips of Pickford.

There was to be another Saints goal three minutes from time as James Ward-Prowse cut back to Davis, who let loose a superb right footed shot from the edge of the area that bent into the far corner.

It was a wonderful finish to a wonderful afternoon for Saints.

A defining moment? Only time will tell, but this is the sort of thing that will do it if anything can.

Austin: Win will fuel belief

Show/hide article…

Austin scored a second-half brace in between goals from Dušan Tadić and Steven Davis as Saints hit Everton for four at St Mary’s.

The striker admitted recent weeks have not been easy, but praised the unity of the club on a special day at St Mary’s.

“It’s a big uplift, the lads are delighted after what’s been a tough few weeks for everyone involved in the football club,” Austin said.

“We knew it would come. They’ve been on a bit of a slippery slope but so have we, and playing at home today everybody got behind us, pushing us forward.

“That’s what we need. We’ve been struggling and everybody’s had that self-doubt, but now we’ve won and the performance was there.

“Everyone involved in the football club needs to jump on the ship now and push forward.

“It’s great for the lads moving forward to have that belief.”

Middlesbrough recover to claim point

Show/hide article…

Middlesbrough came from behind to share the spoils in a six-goal thriller against Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Jake Hesketh and Jonathan Afolabi gave Southampton a 2-0 lead at Heritage Park but Boro pulled a goal back just before the break with a low strike from George Miller.

Boro equalised on 64 minutes through Ashley Fletcher, only for Hesketh to put Southampton ahead again a minute later.

Middlesbrough secured a draw seven minutes from time when Nathan McGinley pounced on a loose ball to score.

Boro remain top of the table, three points clear of Blackburn Rovers, who have a match in hand, while Southampton are seventh.

Man City vs Southampton | Teams, streams and predictions

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City must face the pressure of being Premier League champions-elect as they host Southampton on Wednesday.

A late 2-1 win at Huddersfield on Sunday saw City restore their eight-point advantage over Manchester United at the top of the table after just 13 games.

The manner of City’s celebrations in Huddersfield suggested Guardiola and his players knew what a key win it could be in the context of the title race, and many pundits have already declared that they are uncatchable this season.

Southampton have been far from their best so far this term, but a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Everton on Sunday will send Mauricio Pellegrino’s Saints to the Etihad Stadium on a high.

Man City host Southampton at Etihad Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 8pm on Wednesday, November 29.

The match will not be televised like in the UK.

You can follow all the build-up and goal updates from 7pm with Standard Sport’s live blog.

No new injury concerns for City

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has no injury concerns for his team’s Premier League trip to Manchester City, with long-term absentee Matt Targett the only player set to skip Wednesday’s encounter.

The Argentine has practically a full squad to choose from at the Etihad Stadium, with Mario Lemina having made his first appearance in just over month from the substitute’s bench against Everton on Sunday.

Lemina completed the final 12 minutes of Southampton’s comprehensive 4-1 victory over the Toffees, his first sight of action since the home meeting with West Bromwich Albion on 21 October.

Saints’ midfield options are set to be boosted further by the return of Oriol Romeu after a one-match suspension.
