Added fixtures make Tadic standout option

Show/hide article…

With Southampton facing 11 matches over the remaining nine Gameweeks, Dusan Tadic (£7.0m) could provide the perfect answer for Fantasy Premier League managers seeking a midfield differential.

The Serbia international has produced a goal and three assists over his last trio of appearances, benefitting from playing in a No 10 role in Saints’ 4-2-3-1 formation.

Striker Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.9m) is an injury concern due to a groin problem and so Tadic, who is owned by only 1.8% of managers, could prove a game-changer over the season run-in.

Claude Puel’s men face a south-coast derby against AFC Bournemouth in Gameweek 30, with the Cherries’ defence having conceded 12 goals over their last four away trips.

Crystal Palace visit St Mary’s Stadium four days later, before a trip to West Bromwich Albion in Gameweek 32.

Tadic’s output since moving into a central position suggests he can use those three fixtures as a platform to boost his FPL stock.

Since Gameweek 25, his average number of chances created per match has increased from 1.9 to 3.0.

He has also been more accurate in front of goal, his number of shots on target increasing from 0.7 to 1.3 per match.

Considering that seven of Southampton’s 11 remaining fixtures will be played at home, Saints assets could prove crucial for FPL managers.

But it is Tadic, who delivered eight goals and 13 assists in 2015/16, who appears to offer the standout option, particularly as he is expected to remain on penalty kicks in the continued absence of the injured Charlie Austin (£6.3m).

Tadic will return for domestic duties in confident mood on the back of a goal and two assists in Serbia’s 3-1 win over Georgia in last Saturday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Having produced for both club and country over recent matches, only 6,000 FPL managers have made a move for Tadic over the international break.

His two extra fixtures from now until the end of the season gives him the potential of short-term gains and returns right through until Gameweek 38.

Soccer - Midfielder Romeu relishing Southampton starting role

Show/hide article…

Spaniard Romeu, who joined Southampton in 2015 after loan spells at VfB Stuttgart and Valencia, has appeared in 37 of the south coast club’s 42 fixtures in this campaign compared with just nine appearances in his final season at Chelsea.

“It’s been very good. Having games is something I needed and wanted and coming here has given me this,” Romeu told British media. "It is something I haven’t done before.

"But I’ve always been fighting for this and I’ve always been looking for this kind of season… I have good feelings that, as a player, I don’t want to lose and want to make it last as long as possible.

“It’s great to have this feeling and hopefully it won’t go away.”

Romeu has earned plenty of plaudits for his displays this term and has largely filled the void left by tough-tackling midfielder Victor Wanyama, who joined Tottenham Hotspur last year.

“I feel respected. I’m an important part of the dressing room, which in the way you play gives you that respect. It’s something very nice… I’m really enjoying it,” the 25-year-old Romeu added.

On Saturday, Southampton, who are 10th in the Premier League, host south-coast rivals Bournemouth, also on 33 points in 11th but having played two games more.

Yoshida on target for Japan

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida was captain and netted for Japan as they smashed Thailand 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier.

The centre-back, who will now return to Saints ahead of the AFC Bournemouth match at St Mary’s on Saturday, played the full match as the Blue Samurai continued their fine form in Saitama.

Former Manchester United man Shinji Kagawa opened the scoring after just eight minutes before Leicester’s Shinji Okazaki 50th international goal made it 2-0 at half-time.

Gent striker Yaya Kubo added a third before Yoshida headed home from a corner to complete the rout.

It was the Saints man’s fourth national team goal in total and his first in a year.

He was last on target in March 2016, scoring in a 5-0 thrashing of Afghanistan.

Thailand missed from the penalty spot late, giving the 28-year-old back-to-back clean sheets as skipper.

Yoshida now faces a 6,000 mile trip back to St Mary’s from Japan as Saints prepare for busy period.

Arsenal fear losing forward Chris Willock amid interest from rivals

Show/hide article…

Willock, 19, is viewed as one of the brightest talents at the Emirates Stadium and has already made his first-team debut appearing twice for the club in the EFL Cup earlier this season.

But the forward is in the final three months of his existing deal and the Gunners are yet to agree an extension.

The club have initiated contract discussions but the landscape regarding Willock’s future has changed in recent weeks with a number of clubs registering an interest in the youngster.

Everton, Southampton and Bournemouth are among the Premier League clubs who want to take Willock, while Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring the situation closely.

Willock is keen to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but wants to be playing regular first-team football next season.

Whether that will be possible at Arsenal remains to be seen, particularly given the managerial uncertainty surrounding the club at the moment.

Sims helps England to tournament win

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Josh Sims was part of the England Under-20s squad that celebrated victory in the Four Nations tournament, in France.

Sims, who turned 20 today, played the second half as the Young Lions beat Senegal 2-0 in their final match, thanks to first-half goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dom Solanke.

That followed on from his start in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over France.

Coupled with England’s 2-2 draw against Portugal in their opening fixture, that was enough to put them top of the standings in the mini tournament.
