Five Saints set for final day of international action

Show/hide article…

Five Saints players could feature for their respective nations in World Cup qualifying and international friendlies.

First up, Maya Yoshida is likely to be involved when Japan host Thailand in their latest World Cup qualifying clash (11.35am)

Yoshida captained the Blue Samurai in their last outing, when they secured a vital 2-0 win over the United Arab Emirates to leave them joint top in Group B.

Josh Sims could also play for England Under-20s as they face Senegal in the final game of their mini-tournament in France (2.30pm).

Elsewhere, Sofiane Boufal’s Morocco face Tunisia in a friendly. Boufal came on from the bench in the 2-0 win over Burkina Faso (7pm).

It’s also friendly action for Cédric as Portugal take on Sweden at Estádio dos Barreiros (7.45pm).

Shane Long will also hope to be involved as Republic of Ireland host Iceland in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium (7.45pm).

Saints reveal new season ticket prices

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have announced their season ticket prices for the 2017/18 campaign - with more than 2,000 seats reduced in cost and all other prices frozen.

The amount of cash fans will hand over to attend all games at St Mary’s next term has stayed the same.

And there’s some good news for anyone thinking of getting a new season pass, with new season ticket holder prices having been reduced by an average of 11 per cent.

On top of that there is a brand new family area in the Itchen South, with more than 2,000 seats now cheaper than in 2016/17.

“It means young fans and families will benefit greatly, with a dedicated, affordable area for them to come and watch Saints in action,” a club statement said.

"Under-11s can now get a season ticket for just £50 – which works out at less than £3 per game – while under-18s can secure a seat for less than £8 a match.

"It also means that the combined price for an adult and an under-11 comes in as low as £591 for the season.

“In addition to this, we have also frozen prices for all other seats.”

On Twitter the club wrote: “We now have one set of prices for all, but they are frozen against the 2016/17 renewal costs, so you won’t pay any more.”

So for next term, adult prices range from £541 in the family areas, £570 on the wings and goals and up to £759 in the premium section of the Itchen Stand.

In the centre Itchen and Kingsland price is set at £682, while Kingsland premium seating will cost £737.

Season tickets can be renewed online at tickets.saintsfc.co.uk, by telephone on 02381 780 780 or in person at St.Mary’s.

Fans have until 14 May to renew their season ticket and claim their seat.

The tickets can be bought with cash, card or by a ten month payment plan, which is interest free.

They go on sale next Tuesday (4 April) at 9am.

Here are the prices for next season:

Southampton to target Mamadou Sakho if Virgil Van Dijk leaves for Chelsea this summer

Show/hide article…

Pato began life at the San Siro encouragingly, scoring 18 goals in his debut season and winning both the Golden Boy and Serie A Young Footballer of the Year awards. But from then on his form fluctuated, and he acquired an unwanted playboy reputation after well-publicized trysts with Barbara Berlusconi, a director at the club and daughter of former Italian president Silvio. Now starring for Tianjin Quanjian.

Shaw became the most expensive teenager in football when he left Southampton for Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United. His time at Old Trafford didn’t get off to a great start: the Dutchman promptly accused him of not being fit enough. Injury has dogged his time at the club, and recent reports suggest he could soon be moved on.

The exact sum of Neymar’s transfer from Santos to Barcelona is one of the most controversial subjects in football, but the following is without doubt: Neymar was the most expensive 21-year old player in the history of the game. An undoubted success at Barca, forming a formidable attacking triumvirate alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Eyebrows were raised when Manchester City made John Stones the second most expensive defender of all-time (behind David Luiz). It was hoped that Pep Guardiola would be able to get the best out of a talented but frustratingly erratic young talent, but the costly mistakes have unfortunately yet to be eradicated.

The Uruguayan came so very close to single-handedly winning Liverpool the Premier League title in 2014, before quitting and joining Barcelona. Things didn’t get off to the best of starts when he was suspended for the start of the season after biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, but 40 goals in just 35 La Liga matches in his second season meant his occasional bouts of ill-discipline was quickly forgotten.

One of the best players of all-time, and for eight years, the most expensive player in the history of the game. Joined Real in the twilight of his career but still managed to fit in five highly successful seasons. Now manages the club he retired at.

Given was regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the Premier League when he quit struggling Newcastle for nouveau riche Manchester City in 2008. Immediately displaced a junior Joe Hart – who was banished on loan to Birmingham – before the rookie was to replace him in the 2010/11 season. Given moved on to Aston Villa, for £3.5m.

The less said about this one the better. Another case of Manchester City signing a goalkeeping in his twilight years, booting Joe Hart out on loan, and then wishing they could take him back. Bravo arrived for big money but his signing has proved an unmitigated disaster. Recently he has been benched in favour of Willy Caballero.

The most capped player in the history of the France national team, who enjoyed long and successful spells at Monaco, Parma and Juventus. Barca took advantage of the infamous Calciopoli scandal to sign Thuram for a discount price when Juventus dropped into Serie B, but the defender was forced into an early retirement after only two seasons at the club, after he was diagnosed with a heart defect.

Many thought Ze Roberto would see out his career at Hamburg, after the German club paid Bayern £3.4m for the then 35-year old. How wrong they were. He spent two successful seasons at the club only to depart for Qatari club Al-Gharafa, following that up with stints at Grêmio and Palmeiras. He’s still playing. He’s 43 this July. He signed a contract extension in December.

When 36-year old David James hurriedly left Manchester City for personal reasons in 2006, little did he know how successful his next move was to prove. James kept clean sheets in his first five appearances for Portsmouth, setting the tone for a fine four seasons on the south coast, which included an FA Cup win and an appearance in the Uefa Cup group stage.

Friedel left Blackburn just two appearances short of Terry Gennoe’s club record of 289 for a goalkeeper. Villa beat off interest from Manchester City for his signature, and the American was ever present for the next three seasons. He would move once again before his retirement, to Tottenham Hotspur. Now the head coach of USA Under-19s.

This is possibly the only instance of humble Dundee United featuring on a list of the most expensive transfers in football. Craig Brewster returned to the club as player-manager in January 2006, although the move wasn’t a successful one. The Tangerines went unbeaten for their first three matches, but then went on to win only one match for the remainder of the season. Brewster would cling on until October.

Ward-Prowse: A great week

Show/hide article…

The Saints midfielder made his Three Lions debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly defeat in Germany, while he was also part of the squad for the 2-0 win over Lithuania in World Cup qualifying.

“It’s been a great week for us all and obviously for me personally,” he said after Sunday’s victory, at Wembley.

“To get my first senior cap is a great honour and I’ve left the trip wanting more. It’s a great challenge for us all here and hopefully it can lead onto better things as well.”

Reflecting on his debut, as he came on in the second half against Germany, Ward-Prowse said: “It was obviously a massive moment and one that you work very hard for. To come on against the world champions and sort of gain that experience can only make us better players and better people, so it’s left us wanting more for sure.”

Ward-Prowse explained that he was able to take a lot from the week and that his sense of motivation is only heightened after the experience.

“You end up playing with the best English players and it leaves you wanting to keep playing at this level. You get inspired and want to maintain that yourself,” he said.

Yoshida scores in Japan’s victory over Thailand

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida captained and scored for Japan as they recorded a comfortable 4-0 win over Thailand in their latest World Cup qualifier.

Yoshida completed the full 90 minutes for the hosts, who broke the deadlock after just eight minutes through Shinji Kagaw. That was before Shinji Okazaki’s 50th international goal doubled the advantage on 19.

After the break, a dominant display continued when Gent forward Yuya Kubo added a third, and Yoshida then climbed highest to head home Hiroshi Kiyotake’s corner from close range.

Thailand had the chance to reduce the arrears late on when they got a penalty, but Teerasil Dangda missed from the spot.

Japan now sit top in World Cup qualifying Group B, three points ahead of Saudi Arabia who face Iraq at 6.30pm.

Which Premier League club is strongest after an international break - and why it could give Everton their first win at Anfield since 1999

Show/hide article…

With the latest international break drawing to a close and the Premier League about to get back into full swing, which clubs will return to business in a seamless fashion?

Vicki Hodges looks back over the last five years to discover which clubs perform better after a lull in the action and which clubs take longer to warm back up to the campaign.

There have been 23 international breaks since 2012 with only one weekend failing to yield a complete Premier League programme due to FA Cup fixtures (in March 2014).

With the Merseyside derby taking place this Saturday lunchtime, the omens look very good for Everton to end their 18-year wait for a win at Anfield.

Premier League underrated XI: Do these stars get the recognition they deserve?

Show/hide article…

Swansea City boss Paul Clement has claimed midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson doesn’t get the recognition he deserves because of the club he plays for.

The Icelandic midfielder, who has scored eight goals and made 11 assists, is the main reason the Jacks have climbed out of the Premier League’s relegation zone, and is key to their survival hopes for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, throughout his time with former club Tottenham, Sigurdsson was underused, and current boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed he wishes he still had the player.

The 27-year-old can definitely be considered one of the English top-flight’s under the radar talents, but what about other players?

Oriol Romeu relishing regular football at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu is enjoying being one of the first names on manager Claude Puel’s team sheet after struggling to nail down a place at his former clubs Chelsea and Barcelona.

Spaniard Romeu - who joined Southampton in 2015 after loan spells at Stuttgart and Valencia - has appeared in 37 of the south coast club’s 42 fixtures in this campaign compared with just nine appearances in his final season at Chelsea.

‘It’s been very good. Having games is something I needed and wanted and coming here has given me this,’ Romeu said. 'It is something I haven’t done before.

'But I’ve always been fighting for this and I’ve always been looking for this kind of season… I have good feelings that, as a player, I don’t want to lose and want to make it last as long as possible.

‘It’s great to have this feeling and hopefully it won’t go away.’

Romeu has earned plenty of plaudits for his displays this term and has largely filled the void left by tough-tackling midfielder Victor Wanyama, who joined Tottenham Hotspur last year.

‘I feel respected. I’m an important part of the dressing room, which in the way you play gives you that respect. It’s something very nice… I’m really enjoying it,’ the 25-year-old Romeu added.

On Saturday, Southampton, who are 10th in the Premier League, host south coast rivals Bournemouth, also on 33 points in 11th but having played two games more.
