China’s Amer, CITIC line up rival bid for Southampton - source

Show/hide article…

The bid for the English Premier League side marks a potential challenge to an earlier planned acquisition by Lander Sports Development, which said in January that it was taking a stake in the club.

Southampton take on Manchester United in the final of the League Cup on Sunday, after having beaten Liverpool at Anfield last month in the semi-finals. The Saints last played a major final at Wembley Stadium in 1979.

The new bid comes as China’s government has ramped up scrutiny of outbound deals and capital outflows, with some dealmakers saying Chinese firms are unable to finalise investment plans because they cannot get Beijing’s sign-off.

Lander declined to comment. Amer International did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A CITIC Securities spokeswoman said in a written comment the firm had not got involved in any investment of this kind.

The new consortium, which also includes other private investors, was looking to buy 100 percent of the English south coast club for close to 2.1 billion yuan, the person added.

Industry insiders say a number of sports-related deals have hit hurdles after Beijing said it would rein in risks from “irrational” outbound investments, with particular focus on sectors including hotels, entertainment and sports.

“It’s against the will of the President to acquire an EPL club right now,” said the person with knowledge of the deal.

Should the deal go through, Southampton would join fellow English clubs Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion and second-tier sides Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in having Chinese investment.

Southampton, who are currently 11th in the Premier League, have been a model of success since being saved by the late Swiss billionaire Markus Liebherr in 2009. Liebherr’s daughter Katharina is the Premier League club’s current owner.

A Chinese deal for Italian club AC Milan, which was held up as the buyers struggled to get approval from Beijing, was now expected to be finalised in early March, sources told Reuters this week.

Puel happy with Manolo’s all-round contribution

Show/hide article…

The striker continued his fantastic goalscoring streak with a double against Manchester United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

The brace sees him move to five in his first three games, but Puel says the striker is offering much more than just his goals.

“He cannot keep scoring two goals in every game, we know that of course, but it’s not just his scoring,” Puel told reporters ahead of Saturday’s trip to Watford.

“He’s a great player with quality, because we can find him between the lines and he can play in good combinations with his partners.

“He makes good runs and he has good movement in the box. It’s very interesting with his quality and the quality of his runs.

“We have found a good clinical edge with him, and it will be important for all of the squad and for the strikers, because he gives a good confidence to the squad.”

Puel urges Saints focus

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged his players to pick themselves up after their EFL Cup final defeat and take confidence from the way they played against Manchester United.

There was a sense of upset and despondency around the squad after they came so close to defeating United, only to lose to a late goal at Wembley.

With Saints in midtable and 13 Premier League games left to play, Puel acknowledged the difficulty in trying to refocus his squad, but is hoping they will be buoyed by how they performed against United when they take on Watford on Saturday.

“Of course it was a big disappointment because it was a strong game, a good game for us, with quality and character. We had all the good ingredients for the final without a good result,” said Puel.

“The support of the fans was fantastic also. All was perfect, just a bad result.

“After the first disappointment I think stay the satisfaction to see our performance which showed the quality we can put on the pitch and what we can do against a great team. This is important for the future and the confidence.”

Puel confirmed there are no fresh injury concerns ahead of the trip to Vicarage Road and added: “It’s a good moment to come back on the Premier League with a good spirit, a good attitude.

“I want to see my players with the same level and same quality. Our performance showed what we can do and the progress we can do since the beginning of the season with the solidity, the quality on the pitch, we find a good clinical.

“All this is important now to make clear I think.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel fumes at ‘crazy’ fixtures

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has lamented a ‘crazy’ schedule for Southampton that features just two matches in four weeks.

The Saints boss insists his coaches will face a tough challenge keeping the players fit and focused during a desperately quiet March.

Southampton already face six matches in April, with Premier League games against Manchester United and Arsenal yet to be rearranged.

Saints take on Watford on Saturday with Frenchman Puel demanding his side shake off any lingering malaise from last weekend’s 3-2 EFL Cup final loss to United.

‘My biggest job now is to prepare the team for the difficulty of the calendar,’ said Puel.

'We will play two games in a month after playing every three days since the beginning of the season.

'It’s crazy - crazy for us and difficult. It’s difficult to keep good focus and concentration with a game every two weeks.

'That’s why this game is so important for us, and for the table.

'You saw when we couldn’t play against Arsenal we lost two places in the table.

'After Watford we cannot play against Manchester United, and everyone else gets to play.

'We’ve got to play against teams who play one game a week.

‘All these are difficulties, they are good challenges, and we have to adapt to these conditions of the calendar.’

Puel admitted Saints’ two-week break ahead of the cup final provided a boost as he could organise a training camp in Spain.

But the former Nice boss insisted he cannot pull the same trick again, as he battles to keep all his players match fit.

‘It is difficult. When we have had two weeks before the final it was a good thing because we had played every three days since the beginning of the season,’ said Puel.

'I could give the players four days off, for the first time this season, and that was fantastic for the staff and the recovery of the players.

'We went on a training camp in Spain and it was fantastic work.

'I said congratulations to all the club staff around the team and for the players also, because they all do fantastic, professional work to prepare for this game and to put the players in the best condition.

'Now it’s different. Two weeks is dangerous because to keep good concentration and focus on the training sessions, the good intensity is very difficult.

'We must keep all the attention of the players. We can train but a training session is not an official game. This is difficult.

'We played every three days for Christmas, five days and three games was crazy. Just us.

'Now two weeks every time to prepare for a game is very difficult.

‘It is a real challenge for the next game to find a good result in this condition.’

Claude Puel says Southampton schedule will be difficult for players

Southampton manager Claude Puel has described his team’s schedule as “crazy”, with the Saints due to play just twice in the next four weeks.

The Frenchman fears his coaches will be tested in trying to keep his players fit and focused during a quiet March, which will be followed by a more testing run of six matches in April, with Premier League games against Manchester United and Arsenal yet to be rearranged.

Southampton face Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday with Puel keen to move on after the disappointment of last weekend’s defeat to Manchester United in the final of the EFL Cup.

“My biggest job now is to prepare the team for the difficulty of the calendar,” said Puel.

"We will play two games in a month after playing every three days since the beginning of the season. It’s crazy - crazy for us and difficult.

"It’s difficult to keep good focus and concentration with a game every two weeks. That’s why this game is so important for us, and for the table.

"You saw when we couldn’t play against Arsenal we lost two places in the table.

"After Watford, we cannot play against Manchester United, and everyone else gets to play. We’ve got to play against teams who play one game a week.

“All these are difficulties, they are good challenges, and we have to adapt to these conditions of the calendar.”

Puel admitted Saints’ two-week break ahead of the Wembley cup final was beneficial as it allowed him to organise a training camp in Spain.

But the former Nice boss insisted he cannot repeat the trick, as he attempts to keep all his players match fit.

“It is difficult. When we have had two weeks before the final it was a good thing because we had played every three days since the beginning of the season,” added Puel.

"I could give the players four days off, for the first time this season, and that was fantastic for the staff and the recovery of the players.

"We went on a training camp in Spain and it was fantastic work.

"I said congratulations to all the club staff around the team and for the players also, because they all do fantastic, professional work to prepare for this game and to put the players in the best condition.
