It’s a repeat of Premier League opening day this weekend. What has changed since August?

Show/hide article…

Alvaro Negredo scored on his - and Middlesbrough’s - return to the Premier League but has managed only five goals since Aitor Karanka’s side have found the going increasingly tough. Stoke did not register their first win until Oct 15 but soon climbed back to their regular mid-table station. Harbinger rating: 5

Palace supporters probably sensed what was to come as their team resumed their 2016 slump with defeat by West Bromwich. Even the arrival of a new manager, Sam Allardyce, and a new year, has scarcely changed their predicament. Albion, meanwhile, have turned quiet efficiciency into an art

Team Solent book St Mary’s date for a third year running

Show/hide article…

HOLDERS Team Solent will be back at St Mary’s for a third successive season in the Southampton Senior Cup final.

By manager James Taylor’s own admission, his Southampton Solent University side were not at their best in last night’s semi-final against Hamble Club Reserves at Sholing’s Universal Stadium.

Having had Jamal Wiseman’s sublime 26th-minute strike wiped out by Gerson Ramos’s equally impressive leveller, Solent were taken to extra time by the Monks’ second string and it was Silvano Obeng who fired them through, 2-1, with a well-worked winner.

Taylor said: “It wasn’t a great performance, but the main thing is we’re through.

“It’s pretty special to get to St Mary’s three times in a row and, having won it twice, a hat-trick would be even more special.

“We’re having a bit of a tough time with injuries and we’ve got a few walking wounded at the moment. We’re not playing particularly well.

“Going out of the FA Vase (5-2 to South Shields) was a bit of a blow and the lads were certainly disappointed.

“Injuries and tiredness haven’t helped where we’ve got so many games.

“We’re still in two cups (the Southampton Senior and Sydenhams Wessex) and we’ve got games every midweek from now until the end of the season. There are University games as well, so the lads are playing a lot of football and it’s starting to show.”

Hamble Club were rightly proud of their second string, tweeting: “Everyone, bar the reserves themselves, wrote them off. They competed and matched Solent for long periods of time, immense credit to the lads!”

The other SSC semi-final between Sholing and Brockenhurst will be played next Thursday (March 9, 7.45pm) at Folland Sports FC.

Solent’s next goal is to address their flagging league form that has left them without a win in three.

They have slipped to eighth, level on points with Saturday’s Test Park visitors Lymington Town – albeit that the Students have five games in hand.

*THE gap between Sydenhams Premier leaders Moneyfields and chasing Blackfield & Langley is back to ten points.

Having seen Moneys beat Cowes Sports 2-0 on Tuesday, Blackfield won by an identical scoreline at rock-bottom Verwood Town last night.

Luke Winsper broke the deadlock on 49 minutes following a surging run by Liam Robinson and ex-Saint Jamie White struck with a stoppage-time penalty to boost his season’s goal tally to 34.

Stat Pack: Watford vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Watford have won one of their five Premier League clashes with the Saints (W1 D2 L2) - a 3-2 victory back in December 1999.

Southampton are unbeaten in six league games against the Hornets (W3 D3 L0), including three matches played in the Championship between 2009 and 2012.

Watford have only scored four goals in five previous Premier League meetings with Southampton and three of those were in the aforementioned win in December 1999; they have failed to score in three of their last four.

In the three Premier League games between these two sides since the start of last season, Watford have attempted just two shots on target in 270 minutes.

Watford had substitute Ben Watson sent off in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the 2016-17 season - the only time a sub has been sent off in the Premier League all season.

Manolo Gabbiadini has scored five times in three appearances for Southampton since joining the club, including twice in the League Cup Final.

Gabbiadini also scored in his final three competitive appearances for Napoli, so he’s now scored in six successive club appearances overall (eight goals).

The Italian striker could become the first Saints player to score in his first three Premier League appearances for the club.

Troy Deeney (104 goals) – who has scored four goals in his last five Premier League appearances – is just one goal away from becoming the joint-third highest goalscorer in Watford history alongside Cliff Holton (105 goals).

Van Dijk, Gabbiadini crucial to Southampton bid for European football

Show/hide article…

“Find another centre back, Pep. Southampton are no longer a selling club.”

At least that is the message chairman Ralph Krueger has been sending out to Messrs Klopp and Guardiola in the wake of Sunday’s heartbreaking EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

Southampton fans have been given such promises before; like when Ronald Koeman wasn’t going to up sticks to Everton or when Les Reed said Nathaniel Clyne was close to signing a new contract, before he moved to Liverpool.

Even after former captain Jose Fonte handed in a transfer request, director of football Reed publicly insisted he would only be allowed to leave once a replacement was signed. Another pledge was broken when the Portuguese completed an £8 million move to West Ham soon after.

This time, history cannot be repeated. Southampton must keep Virgil van Dijk for at least another season, build their team around goal machine Manolo Gabbiadini and prove their ambitions stretch further than one runners-up medal.

For 87 minutes at Wembley, Saints thrilled their amazing band of travelling supporters and armchair fans around the world, outplaying a United side saved from a shock defeat only by a criminal offside call and the magical Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But rather than being an epilogue before yet another Southampton team is torn apart by departures, this has to be just the start of potentially the most exciting chapter in the club’s history.

Reed and his boardroom cohorts have spoken frequently about wanting to challenge for a Champions League place and bringing regular European football to the south coast. You don’t achieve such lofty ambitions by selling the family silver.

Sunday’s heroics proved the class of 2017 are capable of mixing it with the very best by going to-to-toe with a United side Jose Mourinho may yet steer to a League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League treble, not to mention a place in the top four.

If Van Dijk stays and manager Clade Puel continues to get the best out of flying full-backs Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand, Southampton have a back four the envy of the majority of their Premier League rivals.

But it is a big “if” because despite signing a mega new six-year contract last summer, the towering Dutchman has a list of suitors stretching across Europe. History tells us that if one of those admirers slaps in a bid matching Southampton’s £50 million valuation, Van Dijk will be out the door.

But that would be Krueger going back on his word and the owners delivering another slap in the face to those faithful followers who turned north London into a sea of red and white stripes.

If Gabbiadini continues to bang in goals at the rate he has in the embryonic weeks of his career in England – scoring five times in three games ahead of Saturday’s trip to Watford – the Italian will soon start catching the eye of the elite clubs.

Again, Southampton simply have to keep Krueger’s promise and resist the urge to cash in on their £17m investment from Napoli.

If Krueger is true to his word, these could be very exciting times indeed.

Premier League opening day fixtures reversed: What’s changed at your club?

Show/hide article…

This season’s opening day Premier League fixtures are reversed this weekend - but what’s changed at your club since August?

We’ve looked at every starting line-up from the opening day and compared it to each club’s predicted selection for this coming weekend.

Flip the cards below to see how things have changed…

United captain Wayne Rooney started the season in the centre of an attacking three behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic but has only made seven league starts since, while Marcos Rojo has become a regular this season at the expense of Luke Shaw.

Josh King has emerged as Bournemouth’s target man after Callum Wilson suffered another cruciate knee ligament injury, while Jordan Ibe has been stuck on the bench in recent weeks. Winger Ryan Fraser has become a regular starter since scoring against Swansea on New Year’s Eve and Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere is gaining valuable playing time at the Vitality Stadium since his loan switch.

Swansea talisman Gylfi Sigurdsson started the season on the bench under former boss Francesco Guidolin but has scored eight goals and assisted another nine since the opening day.

The Swans’ league form has surged under new boss Paul Clement, with new signings Alfie Mawson and Tom Carroll making an impact in defence and midfield, respectively.

Burnley remain unchanged up front, in defence and in goal, but new signings Robbie Brady, Joey Barton and Jeff Hendrick appear to have displaced Scott Arfield, David Jones and Dean Marney in midfield.

Interim Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare appears to have reinstated the old guard of Marc Albrighton and Shinji Okazaki, while January signing Wilfred Ndidi is favoured to fill the N’Golo Kante void over Andy King.

Hull have experienced a renaissance since replacing manager Mike Phelan with Marco Silva - despite losing key players Robert Snodgrass and Jake Livermore.

January reinforcements Andrea Ranocchia, Lazar Markovic and Kamil Grosicki have hit the ground running at the KCOM, while Harry Maguire has established a regular stating place in central defence.

Arsenal kicked off the season with a defensive injury crisis, starting an emergency pairing of Rob Holding and Callum Chambers - who has since been loaned to Middlesbrough. But summer signing Shkodran Mustafi has since become Laurent Koscielny’s regular centre-back partner.

Liverpool’s starting XI remains largely unchanged this season - unlike their scintillating form which came to an abrupt end in January. James Milner has established himself as a left-back, while Joel Matip has also impressed since his summer move.

Crystal Palace sacked Alan Pardew in December and former England boss Sam Allardyce took the helm at Selhurst Park, drafting defensive recruitments Luka Milivojevic, Mamadou Sakho and Patrick van Aanholt.

The Saido Berahino transfer saga finally concluded in January with the 23-year-old making a £12m switch to Stoke. Tony Pulis has also added to his ranks, signing Matt Phillips, Allan Nyom, Jake Livermore and Nacer Chadli among others.

The Saints have successfully introduced a 4-2-3-1 formation with Oriol Romeu and Steven Davis protecting the back four. January signing Manolo Gabbiadini has scored a staggering five goals from three games since his move to St Mary’s.

Middlesbrough have scored the fewest goals in the league this season with 19 and are expected to field a 4-3-3 formation against Stoke at the weekend to accommodate January signing Rudy Gestede, flanked by pacy Adama Traore and Gaston Ramirez.

Lee Grant has made his loan move from Derby permanent after successfully filling in for injured 'keeper Jack Butland and Porto loanee Bruno Martins Indi has become a regular partner for Ryan Shawcross at centre-back.

Wilfried Bony’s loan move from Manchester City has not been successful to date, having only played six minutes for the Potters since November - in contrast to summer signing Joe Allen, who has found unfamiliar goalscoring form this term.

Everton started the season with a 3-4-3 system, which became the catalyst formation for Chelsea’s title charge this season.

Ronald Koeman has made several successful signings during his first season at Goodison Park, including Morgan Schneiderlin, Ashley Williams, Ademola Lookman, Idrissa Gueye and Yannick Bolasie. However, Bolasie has been sidelined with injury since December after initially forging a promising partnership with top scorer Romelu Lukaku.

Tottenham have also been experimenting with the 3-4-3 system and remain largely unchanged this season, with summer signing Victor Wanyama forming a resolute defensive midfield partnership with Mousa Dembele.

Pep Guardiola’s defensive signings have been under scrutiny this season, with 'keeper Claudio Bravo and defender John Stones criticised for costly errors.

However, Guardiola’s attacking recruits - Leroy Sane, Nolito, Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan - have all made impressive starts at the Etihad, despite the latter two suffering long-term injuries.

Sunderland are once again fighting for survival this season under new boss David Moyes and lost key player Patrick van Aanholt to Crystal Palace in January.

However, the emergence of 22-year-old 'keeper Jordan Pickford has produced at least one positive for the Black Cats.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation against Hull in October and has only lost one league game since. Three of Conte’s four major summer signings - N’Golo Kante, David Luiz and Marcos Alonso - have been integral to the Blues’ title charge this season.

However, striker Michy Batshuayi has failed to start one league game since his £33m move to Stamford Bridge.

Michail Antonio started the season at right-back for West Ham and, 26 games later, the 26-year-old is the Hammers’ top scorer with eight league goals.

Slaven Bilic has selected Darren Randolph over long-serving goalkeeper Adrian since November and has reinforced his squad with attacking options Robert Snodgrass and Andre Ayew, in addition to signing Manuel Lanzini on a permanent basis.
