Southampton must forget Wembley heartache, says boss Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has challenged his Southampton players to put their Wembley disappointment behind them by securing a positive end to the Premier League campaign.

The Saints were beaten 3-2 in the EFL Cup final by Manchester United on Sunday in a match where they had fought back from 2-0 down before Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed a late winner.

Puel believes his squad will be stronger for the experience, with the likes of Jake Hesketh, Harrison Reed and Josh Sims all gaining invaluable first-team game time along the way to the club’s first major cup final in 41 years.

Southampton travel to Watford on Saturday looking to move up from 13th place and deliver a strong finish to a campaign which also saw Puel’s squad take on the Europa League.

‘The journey in this competition was amazing, with young players at the beginning of the competition and after that experienced players,’ Puel said in an interview with the official club website.

‘We produced a great final. It was a good competition, but of course the most important thing was to win it, and this (result) is difficult for us.’

Puel added: ‘For now it is important to keep our concentration about the Premier League. It is a strong challenge ahead.’

After playing Watford, the Saints are then not in action again until they travel to Tottenham on March 18 because original Premier League opponents United will be involved in the FA Cup quarter-finals against Chelsea.

Puel wants the players to remain focused during the gap in action.

‘We will stay two weeks with just one game, and this is difficult for the concentration and motivation,’ the French coach said.

‘It is important to rise to this difficult challenge.’

Want to meet some of Southampton’s first-team stars and club legends? Well, here’s your chance, thanks to our special competition for Saints Foundation’s ‘A Game of Two Halves’ event.

Charlie Austin’s team of current players will be taking on Matt Le Tissier’s squad of greats in the live gameshow, at St Mary’s, on Tuesday 7th March, and we’ve got a pair of pre-show ‘Meet & Greet’ tickets, worth £30 each, to give away.

The tickets give you access to an exclusive Q&A with the teams – as well as presenters Kelvin Davis and Kenzie Benali – ahead of the night’s main event, while you will also get time for photograph and autograph opportunities.

To be in with a chance of winning, all you’ve got to do is buy a seat in the audience by 5pm on Thursday for what promises to a memorable night, which will see the two teams go head-to-head in a series of entertaining challenges, with a few surprise guests set to feature along the way.

The evening, which begins at 7.30pm GMT, will also give you the chance to get your hands on some fantastic Saints memorabilia.

All proceeds made from A Game of Two Halves will go towards Saints Foundation and its vital work in the community.

Claude Puel calls for Southampton to kick on after EFL Cup final loss

Claude Puel has challenged Southampton to put their Wembley disappointment behind them and end the Premier League campaign in style.

Southampton were beaten 3-2 in the EFL Cup final by Manchester United on Sunday, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic heading a late winner.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game with Watford, Puel said: "The journey in this competition (EFL Cup) was amazing, with young players at the beginning of the competition and after that experienced players.

"We produced a great final. It was a good competition but, of course, the most important thing was to win it, and this result is difficult for us.

“But for now it is important to keep our concentration about the Premier League. It is a strong challenge ahead.”

After the Watford match, Saints face a 15-day wait before taking on Tottenham and Puel added: "We will stay two weeks with just one game, and this is difficult for the concentration and motivation.

“It is important to rise to this difficult challenge.”
