Gabbiadini: I will keep my feet on the ground

Show/hide article…

The Italian striker has netted five goals in his opening three games since his January transfer, including two in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Manchester United boss José Mourinho congratulated the striker after Sunday’s game, telling Gabbiadini: ‘You did a great job, you scored two phenomenal goals’.

Now Gabbiadini has set his sights on continuing that form, knowing he can’t take his foot off the gas.

“In my case the adventure has started well, but I, by nature, always keep my feet on the ground. Football really is like the open sea,” he told reporters after Sunday’s final.

“There are moments of calm, but suddenly you can be hit by a storm and you can’t ever relax. Five goals in three games is an amazing start.

“But it won’t always be this way. One thing I can guarantee though: I will always give my best, I’ll never give up.

“It has been beautiful, but I need to keep my feet on the ground. Football is strange, you’re flying and then suddenly you crash back down to earth.

“But I’d be lying if I said I’d expected a start like this.”

And Gabbiadini says he’s also forming a positive relationship with manager Claude Puel. “We speak English, Italian and French,” he added.

“The relationship is good. He’s asked me to play as a pure centre-forward, to always gamble at the near post.

“The goal for the one-two, the one from the James Ward-Prowse cross, came from that. We understand each other, that’s the most important thing.”

Ex-Saint retires from international football

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints goalkeeper Artur Boruc has announced his retirement from international football with Poland in order to focus on his AFC Bournemouth career and his family.

Boruc has struggled for form at the Vitality Stadium this term, having conceded 20 goals in his last seven appearances for Eddie Howe’s strugglers.

And now he’s decided to focus all his attentions on domestic football.

The 37-year-old is Poland’s most-capped stopper with 64 appearances to his name.

In a statement published on the club website, Boruc said: "I would like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from international football.

"It has not been an easy decision and has been one I’ve taken incredibly seriously. However, after much thought and consideration I feel now is the right time in order to focus fully on my family and club career at AFC Bournemouth.

"I would like to thank the coach, Adam Nawałka, and everyone connected with Poland for all of the fantastic support I’ve received ever since I made my debut back in 2004.

"It’s been an amazing journey and I will always look back with great pride to have represented my country so many times.

"I have loved every minute of my time playing for the national team and feel proud, humbled and honoured to end my international career as Poland’s most capped goalkeeper.

"I would like to wish the players, coaching staff and everyone connected to the team the very best for the future and I will continue to follow our great nation as a fan.

“Finally and most importantly, I would like to thank the fans and people of Poland for your incredible support throughout my international career.”

Loan Watch: Gallagher helps Rovers to win

Show/hide article…

Gallagher, who played the full match, was fouled for the decisive penalty in the second half, as Craig Conway converted from the spot to give Rovers all three points.

The Saints striker had twice gone close in the first half, only to be denied by Scott Carson.

However, he played a big part in the breakthrough, as he was fouled in the area by Alex Pearce, in the 58th minute, allowing Conway to convert.

Gallagher was later kept out again by Carson, but Rovers’ solitary goal was enough for a win that puts them 22nd in the table, in the relegation zone only on goal difference.

They have now taken four points from their last two games, following last Friday’s 1-1 draw at Burton, in which Gallagher came off then bench in the second half, and they now head into back-to-back home games with Wigan and Cardiff.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Jason McCarthy was due to be in action for Walsall, but their home League One clash with Chesterfield was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

It means the Saddlers, who are 13th, have to wait until Saturday’s home game with Oldham for the chance to bounce back from last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon, in which McCarthy played the full game.

In Spain, Saints keeper Paulo Gazzaniga started for Rayo Vallecano in their latest Segunda match, away to Getafe, on Saturday, and was on course for a clean sheet until Chechu Dorado’s own goal in the last minute gave the hosts a 1-0 win and left Rayo 19th in the standings.

The Inside Track: Watford

Show/hide article…

How have things gone for Watford since the teams met on the opening day?

It has been an up and down season for the Hornets, but most fans would have happily taken their current position at the start of the campaign. Walter Mazzarri’s side made a strong start and were as high as seventh in December, before a poor run, undoubtedly affected by a spate of injuries, left them looking over their shoulders. But the return of key players and some smart business in the transfer window have made the difference and a mid-table finish looks on the cards.

What’s the recent form been like?

Their current form has been reasonably encouraging and eased any fears of being sucked into a relegation battle. Their only defeat in the last six league games came against Manchester United, and a superb victory at Arsenal sparked their upturn in form. Watford have also been solid at home, with only Tottenham beating them in the last seven fixtures at Vicarage Road.

What sort of a system and style of play do they tend to use?

Mazzarri has shown a flexibility and willingness to alter his system both before games and during matches. He will have to do so again, as the favoured three man attack featuring M’Baye Niang, Troy Deeney and Mauro Zárate will not be available for the rest of the season, after the latter’s serious injury suffered against West Ham last weekend.

In terms of the style of play, Watford have been trying to play a bit more of a passing game, with Niang and Zárate in the side. But if Stefano Okaka or Isaac Success are brought into the side then you can expect a more direct approach.

Who have been the key players this season, and who would you say are the ones to watch on Saturday?

In the first half of the campaign, defender Sebastian Prödl was the most consistent performer. But a couple of January signings have made a big impact, with Tom Cleverley and Niang catching the eye.

Cleverley has looked at home back at Watford, in his second spell at the club, following his loan move from Everton. His energy and willingness to get forward from midfield has been a welcome addition and popular with supporters.

Niang has also impressed, with his strength and ability on the ball proving a valuable asset. The Milan forward, on loan until the end of the season, got off the mark for Watford against Burnley and will be expecting to add to his tally during the rest of the campaign.

What sort of a game would you expect this weekend?

I would expect an entertaining game if Southampton can replicate their performance from Wembley. The Saints were excellent against Manchester United and Watford will do very well to keep out Manolo Gabbiadini in his current form. Watford did not play particularly well in the draw against West Ham and will be looking for a better performance. If I was to give a prediction, I would probably lean towards a draw, which has been the outcome in two of the last three meetings between the sides.

Puel proud of EFL Cup run

Show/hide article…

Saints lost out to Manchester United in the final at Wembley on Sunday following a memorable run to the final, in which Puel’s men didn’t concede a goal until the clash with United.

The likes of Jake Hesketh, Harrison Reed and Josh Sims all played their part in Saints’ progress to the final, highlighting the club’s commitment to giving youth the opportunity to impress.

For that reason, and many others, Puel was delighted with his side’s run in the EFL Cup. “All of the competition it was fantastic,” the Saints boss told southamptonfc.com.

“The journey in this competition was amazing, with young players at the beginning of the competition and after that experienced players.

“We produced a great final. It was a good competition, but of course the most important thing was to win it, and this is difficult for us.”

But the Saints boss believes heartache at Wembley on Sunday will make his players more determined than ever to get back to a major cup final.

“It’s important to use this emotion to come back. Of course we want to, either in this competition or another cup,” he added.

“But for now it’s important to keep our concentration about the Premier League. It is a strong challenge ahead.

“We will stay two weeks with just one game, and this is difficult for the concentration and motivation.

“It’s important to rise to this difficult challenge.”

Leeds star wanted by Premier League side: They scouted him at the weekend

The Saints sold Jose Fonte to West Ham during the January transfer window and will look to bolster their back-line at the end of the season.

ClubCall claim that Southampton were interested in Swedish centre-back Jansson while he was plying his trade with Malmo.

Saints will have a lucky omen at Watford

Show/hide article…

LUCKY omen Jon Moss will referee Saints’ visit to Watford this weekend.

The Yorkshire official has taken charge of six Saints games since the start of last season - and the club have won them all.

He sent off Norwich’s Steven Whittaker after just 31 minutes of a league game at St Mary’s in August 2015. The game was goalless at the time, but Saints won 3-0.

Moss also then refereed Saints’ wins at Swansea and Tottenham in 2015/16 as well as the 4-0 home thrashing of Arsenal.

This year he dished out seven bookings in Saints’ 3-0 league win at West Ham - though only Virgil van Dijk and Oriol Romeu from the visiting team.

His last Saints game was the dire 1-0 FA Cup replay win against Norwich, the only match this season where he has not handed out at least one booking.

The 46-year-old has shown 105 yellow cards in the Premier League this season.

Only Andre Marriner, who took charge of last weekend’s League Cup final, and Anthony Taylor have dished out more.

A study by former officials at the end of last season found he made more “fundamental” errors than any other top-flight referee.

And in October, ex-Premier League refs’ chief Keith Hackett even suggested he should be removed from the Premier League as he was “not up to standard”.
