Jones on Newcastle United defeat

Show/hide article…

A tightly contensted first-half was juxtaposed by a more open second, with substitute Luke Charman’s double the difference.

And Jones says they must regroup quickly in order to bounce back against Chelsea next time out in Premier League 2.

“It’s frustrating because we need a point or a win to top the group which we wanted and now we have to rely on other results. We’ve got to take whatever comes,” said Jones

“We had to go for the goal (at 1-0) to try and get a point and try to push. They’ve caught us on the counter which is disappointing but I don’t think we were good enough today.

“We need to have a good look at ourselves before we go again next week because we want to put things right straight away.”

Jones returned to Radhi Jaïdi’s side at Whitley Park having recently joined the first-team for their training camp in Spain ahead of the EFL Cup final, something which he feels has been highly beneficial.

“It’s been a good experience being around the first-team and learning from the players and the staff. I want to take that into the Under-23s and help everyone out.”

Vote for your Under Armour Player of the Month

Show/hide article…

Saints played just three games in February, starting with a disappointing defeat to West Ham United, before a fine victory against Sunderland and then a heart-breaking loss to Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.

The first nominee is a man who scored in all three of those games. Manolo Gabbiadini, who arrived in January, netted on his debut against West Ham United at St Mary’s.

He then scored twice at Sunderland, before netting a brace in the EFL Cup final at Wembley to make it five goals in his first three games for Saints.

One of his goals came from a James Ward-Prowse assist, and the midfielder is the second nominee. Ward-Prowse impressed after being moved to a wide-right position for the games against Sunderland and Manchester United.

The England Under-21 international set up Shane Long in the win at Sunderland, before teeing up Gabbiadini for his first goal at Wembley.

Joining Gabbiadini and Ward-Prowse are defenders Ryan Bertrand and Maya Yoshida.

Bertrand was excellent against Sunderland, assisting Gabbiadini’s first goal and also seeing his cross turned into his own net by Sunderland’s Jason Denayer.

The left-back was also in fine form against Manchester United, defending well and providing a constant threat down the left-hand side.

Fellow defender Yoshida was also at his very best in the win against Sunderland and against Manchester United in the EFL Cup final, making several crucial interceptions and tackles.

Click here to vote for your Under Armour Player of the Month for February.

Voting closes at midday on Friday 3rd March.

Puel’s battle for momentum

Show/hide article…

Saints are set to go from fixture feast to famine as Claude Puel battles to keep momentum in his side’s season.

Puel has had to deal with a chaotic situation for much of this campaign, with Saints playing every few days and having to travel across Europe.

However, he now has the opposite problem as his side are left kicking their heels and trying to keep the season alive after the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United at Wembley.

Saints are in a run of playing just four games in the space of 49 days. That started with the 4-0 win over Sunderland on February 11, took in the final, and encompasses the trip to Watford on Saturday and a game away at Tottenham on March 19.

There is then an international break meaning Saints won’t play again until April 1 – their first St Mary’s match following the EFL Cup final.

Put into context, Saints’ 49 days before the Sunderland game saw them play 12 times, including a club record breaking nine fixtures in January alone.

Puel is in what is likely to be a defining period of his management, as he has the chance to try and prove what he can do when the club are not playing every few days.

However, with the cups done and dusted and the way the Premier League table currently looks with Saints mired in midtable and unlikely to challenge for European football, plus the sense of drift from not playing regularly, it is a tricky time.

Saints will still have a few busy bursts of fixtures before the end of the campaign.

There are three games in a week when they return to action after the international break on April 1.

There are also rearranged games against Arsenal and Manchester United at St Mary’s to be slotted into the schedule.

Saints were due to play Arsenal last Saturday, but that game was postponed due to the EFL Cup final.

The United game was due to take place a week on Sunday but has been canned for the time being due to the Red Devils making it to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Neither of those games are likely to be rearranged before the international break at the back end of March.

There are no clear midweeks to take on United as Jose Mourinho’s side have a two-legged Europa League last 16 tie to navigate.

Arsenal could potentially have a clear midweek on March 14 and 15, but at such short notice due to having to wait for their Champions League exit it would likely be considered too soon to slot in now.

That would likely mean both games having to be played in the final six weeks of the season.

Five things for Saints to consider this season

Show/hide article…

It was so near and yet so far for Saints in the EFL Cup final.

A brave performance couldn’t quite get them over the line as they suffered a gut-wrenching defeat against Manchester United at Wembley.

The game had become the focus of the season, with European football at stake after the group stage elimination last year.

Saints may be stuck in midtable in the Premier League, but still have virtually three months of the campaign left to play.

Here the Daily Echo takes a look at five things to consider as the rest of the season unwinds.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for Claude Puel is going to be picking up his players after the defeat at Wembley and getting them focussed on really pushing ahead for the remainder of the season.

The supporters will no doubt feel the same. After the high of coming so close to finally ending a 41 year wait for major silverware, to get motivated for 13 Premier League games with seemingly little to play for will be a challenge.

If there is apathy in the stands, if attendances do dip a little at St Mary’s, then it would be somewhat understandable. Some people come and back their side no matter what, others pay for excitement and entertainment.

For the players this is their job and their career, but simply saying that doesn’t necessarily make it easy to really put themselves on the line when they are deflated and don’t have a clear target to aim for.

A quick look at the Premier League table suggests that Saints will do well to finish higher than ninth. Certainly seventh, and the chance of European qualification, looks almost out of the question, as is relegation.

So just how, exactly, do you keep some momentum in the season? The race for ninth doesn’t exactly having a thrilling ring to it.

The last thing you want as a club and a manager is a sense of drift.

The manager has been the subject of a lot of questions in his first season in charge.

There have been extenuating circumstances behind some of his decisions – for example, the much criticised rotation policy which was brought about by a first half of the season that was pretty much constant fixture chaos.

The sheer volume of games also meant it was hard for Puel to have the chance to work with his players on the training ground and really get his ideas and methods put into practise.

He has eventually gone back to the 4-2-3-1 formation, but whether he sticks with that now will be interesting.

Without such a heavy fixture burden for much of the rest of the campaign, Puel now has no excuses.

He can play his first choice team in pretty much every game, doesn’t need to tinker and has a lot of time to work with his squad on the training ground.

This is a chance to really prove himself and get fans behind him ahead of the summer.

What will see from Martin Caceres?

The signing of the Uruguayan seemed to make perfect sense when it initially looked as though he would be available for the Premier League game at Sunderland to give himself the chance to bed in ahead of marking Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Wembley.

As it turned out Caceres was only able to join just over a week before the EFL Cup final, and, therefore, was never going to be able to start the game.

If you are being totally honest about it, then his signing did seem like something of a panic buy, a reaction to the fact Saints didn’t manage to bring in a higher priority target during the January window.

When they moved for Caceres they had lost to West Ham, and there was a sense the wheels were starting to come off a little just ahead of the big day at Wembley.

But a 4-0 win over Sunderland and then a creditable performance against United make his appearance on the scene seem a little less vital and possibly not worth the rumoured cash being forked out.

He is around for the remainder of the season, which will be vital in terms of the centre half transfer policy in the summer.

Caceres will be playing for a new contract, either at Saints or elsewhere, while Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens want to be considered as first choice for the future, and not just because of the recent emergency circumstances.

The ÂŁ14m January signing has been in blistering form since joining Saints from Napoli.

Gabbiadini’s track record didn’t suggest that he would be a particularly prolific goalscorer, but how wrong that has proved early on.

Five goals in his first three games – including two at Wembley – have already earned him a place in Saints folklore no matter what happens from now on.

All eyes will be Gabbiadini to see just many he can plunder before the end of the season.

There have already been some fans suggesting, hopefully half in jest, though possibly scarred by recent summers, that if he keeps up his current form Saints could end up having to deal with bids for him as soon as this summer.

While that seems an unlikely prospect, it will be interesting to see whether this is a honeymoon period for the striker or whether Saints have landed a very special goalscorer indeed.

When looking for the next significant milestone for the club, your mind cannot help but walk forward to the summer transfer window.

As ever it will be an interesting affair. Virgil van Dijk’s injury has quietened down the speculation over his future.

If he doesn’t return before the end of this season it might actually help Saints. Then again, a fair few clubs might still start to throw £50m down and really test the resolve at St Mary’s.

There are a few players, especially some of what were once the youngsters who have now aged up a bit, with a bit to prove ahead of this summer as well if they are to be in contention next season.

Certainly without the demands of European football next season Saints are not going to need quite as much depth to their squad.

Puel will be looking closely as he starts to plot what areas to strengthen and it won’t be too long until the feelers start to go out to try and ensure targets are brought in.

Premier League title winners: Myth busting the champions’ traits

Show/hide article…

They say to win the Premier League you must score the most, concede the fewest, and have a 20+ goal striker.

You need a mix of youth and experience, you must beat the teams around you, and of course, you have to spend the most dosh.

But are these just false assumptions, or real, title-winning traits? Sky Sports take a deeper look, and you may think again before blurting out the following phrases…

Let’s start off with an easy one.

Most of the time, that’s true, but only just. More often than you’d assume, title winners are not the top scorers in the Premier League - only 62.5 per cent net the most goals.

Fifteen of the 24 Premier League champions since 1992/93 have been top scorers, notching on average 79 goals.

Manchester United scored just 67 goals in the 1992/93 season, despite playing 42 games, with goals in the early Premier League seasons spread more across the division than modern times. Even Blackburn Rovers, who finished 13 points behind United in fourth place, scored more.

Not true, most of the time. Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho said former side Chelsea would win the title this season due to their superior defensive record.

But only 42 per cent (10 out of 24) of Premier League champions have held the best defensive record.

And what about clean sheets? Only seven of the 24 title winners have the best clean-sheet record. That’s just 29.1 per cent.

‘‘If I don’t get the service, I can’t score," said Wayne Rooney in 2010. "If I don’t score, I expect others to. We share the goals out well and it’s certainly not just about me. We expect to win as a team, not as individuals.’’

Rooney’s idea of a successful team is in many ways correct. Only 13 of the 24 Premier League winners had players who scored over 20 goals in a season, just 54.1 per cent.

Yes, Blackburn may have struggled with a lesser alternative to Alan Shearer’s 34 goals in 1994/95, and nobody is saying the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy didn’t help their sides’ cause, but the age-old theory that a hit man is imperative to success just isn’t true.

In fact, the likes of Eric Cantona (1992/93 - 15 goals; 1995/96 - 14 goals), Teddy Sheringham (2000/01 - 15 goals) and Frank Lampard (2004/05 - 13 goals) were their club’s top scorers in title-winning seasons, but far off the golden boot gong.

Conclusion? Reliance on just one striker is not a good thing, and a share of the goals usually helps spread the load.

… Beat the teams around them

There’s a decent case for this. Three points are three points, whether they come against the basement boys or your nearest challengers, but in the last 10 seasons, title winners tend to come either first or second in their top-four mini-league.

No Premier League side since 2006/07 have taken maximum points from their top-four rivals, though Manchester City (2011/12) and Chelsea (2009/10) came close with 15 points out of a possible 18.

It’s a mixed bag. Manchester United won just one of their six clashes against other top four sides in their victorious 2008/09 campaign, while Arsenal have finished top of the mini-league pile on three occasions in the past decade, but have nothing to show for it.

But the average top-four points haul of Premier League champions is 10.1 out of 18, suggesting solid form against your rivals helps.

Not necessarily true. Only four of the eight Premier League-winning managers have had international caps,

Arsene Wenger did not have a playing career to shout about, while Mourinho became a coach at the age of 34. Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, was appointed manager of East Stirlingshire at the age of just 32.

Antonio Conte, who won multiple honours with Juventus and earned 20 Italy caps, would slightly buck the trend if his Chelsea side are successful come May.

… Have a mix of experience and youth

The average age of a title-winning side is 26.7, which is on average the 11th oldest throughout the 24 past Premier League seasons. A nice middle-ground…

Not true, at least in the past decade. Only once in the last nine seasons has a Premier League champion had the highest net spend - Manchester City in 2013/14 (ÂŁ102m).

The lowest net spend of a Premier League title-winner since 2007 were Manchester United in 2010/11 (ÂŁ11m), bringing in the likes of Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez, while selling Ben Foster and Zoran Tosic for decent sums.

This year’s leaders Chelsea are also following the trend; their net spend was far less than Manchester United and Manchester City in the summer window, and Conte’s side managed to pick up a cool £62m in January without spending a penny. If they win the title, they will have done so with a net spend of just £35.65m.

The typical net spend of a Premier League champion since 2007/08 is not much higher, at ÂŁ43m, which is on average the 5th highest. Not exactly frugality, but astute spending seems to be the way forward.

… Have the most shots

If you don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win the raffle. Four of the last 10 title winners have registered the most shots on goal, with champions averaging third highest shooters since 2006/07. Champions average 661 shots on goal in the season, at 17.4 per game.

… Have the best discipline

Most definitely not. Ferguson’s famous United sides weren’t exactly cordial, and attitude was the hallmark of Wenger’s three title-winning Arsenal sides.

Only one Premier League champion has finished a season with the best disciplinary record - Manchester United in 2002/03 - with Roy Keane the only player sent off in the entire league season.

Leicester ran them close last season, picking up three double-yellows but no straight reds, but on average title winners have finished eighth in the fair play table.

The lowest a title-winner has finished in the disciplinary table is 17th; Wenger’s Arsenal in 2001/02 saw Ray Parlour sent off three times, and Oleg Luzhny, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Patrick Vieira dismissed once each.

… Have the most possession

Most of the time, that’s not true. Only one title winner since 2006/07 has had highest average possession (Manchester United 06/07 - 59.58 per cent), with the last 10 title winners averaging 56.34 per cent of the ball.

Leicester are the obvious anomaly, registering 42.43 per cent average possession last season, and on the whole football seems to be slowly shifting away from a possession-based dominance.

Statistics from the last 10 years of the Premier League show a dramatic change in use of the ball and just how many sides are happy to let the opposition have a go. And why not let them?

In the 2007/08 season, just 19 sides won with less than 40 per cent possession. In 2014/15 that figure was up to 46 and last season was at 52.

It’s not rocket science. Good teams tend to spend more time in the penalty area than bad ones, so more spot kicks are a given.

But it may surprise you that only twice in the last 14 seasons has a Premier League champion been awarded the most penalties (Leicester 2015/16 - 13 pens; Chelsea 2009/10 - 12 pens).

The average number of penalties awarded to a title-winning side since 2002/03 is 6.7, and the champions tend to come around fifth in the penalty-award table. Not as cut and dried as you might expect.
