’ live Premier League fixtures for April announced

Show/hide article…

Sky Sports will follow the race for the title, the battle for the top four and the fight for survival with huge head-to-heads in a packed April schedule.

Sky Sports has already shown 13 of the biggest contests between the teams currently in the top six and will show even more as the season reaches its climax, with the Merseyside and north London derbies, as well as Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea, among the latest set of live fixtures.

As the race for a top-four finish intensifies, Sky Sports will be the only place to see Arsenal and Liverpool again in the top flight this term.

It’s set to be one of the closest run-ins at both ends of the table and Sky Sports will be there the whole way, starting with three huge games over the first weekend of April. Liverpool and Everton meet in the Merseyside derby on Saturday lunchtime, while Nissan Super Sunday features a crunch survival scrap between Swansea and Middlesbrough and a top-four duel between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea are currently in pole position to top the league but a pack remains in pursuit and Antonio Conte’s side face former boss Jose Mourinho’s resurgent Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday April 16. In another big tussle, Sky Sports viewers can look forward to the north London derby from White Hart Lane on April 30.

Sky Sports Head of Football, Gary Hughes said: “Sky Sports is the place to see the remaining big fixtures as the Premier League heads towards its dramatic conclusion. There is so much still to play for at both ends of the table and we will be there every step of the way.”

Sky Sports has added 18 more Premier League matches in April and will show 18 Premier League teams in a massive month of live action. Goals and highlights from these and all 380 Premier League matches can also be accessed via the Sky Sports Football Score Centre app.

*Subject to Leicester’s involvement in the Champions League, Everton v Leicester City could move to Saturday April 8, 12.30pm, with Tottenham Hotspur v Watford moving to Sunday April 9, 4pm.

** Subject to Arsenal’s involvement in the Champions League

Saints television games announced

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ Premier League games against AFC Bournemouth, Manchester City and Chelsea in April have been moved for television coverage.

The Cherries match on 1 April will now kick-off at 5.30pm rather than 3pm and will be shown on BT Sport.

Claude Puel’s men will then take on City live on BT Sport on 15 April, with the kick-off time also changing to 5.30pm.

The final change to the scheduling will see Saints take on Chelsea on Sunday, 23 April, rather than the previously planned Saturday kick-off.

That game will be live on Sky Sports and will start at 2.15pm.

The match at Stamford Bridge will be subject to change if Antonio Conte’s side beat Manchester United in the FA Cup sixth round.

Manolo Gabbiadini: Jose Mourinho called me ‘outstanding’ in EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini has said that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho praised his two-goal display in the EFL Cup final.

Gabbiadini, 25, also had a goal wrongly disallowed for Southampton as they lost 3-2 to United at Wembley, but the Italy international was happy to receive the praise of Mourinho.

“When a personality like him comes up to you and says ‘you were outstanding and scored two phenomenal goals,’ then it makes you feel something special inside,” Gabbiadini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Mourinho is a special person and not just for the success he has had as a coach, but because he is charismatic.”

Gabbiadini has scored five goals in three games since joining Southampton in January. Having struggled for regular playing time at Napoli, Gabbiadini has said he did not see eye to eye with coach Maurizio Sarri.

“I consider Sarri as one of the best coaches I have ever worked for, but things just did not spark between us,” Gabbiadini said. "For me, honesty and interpersonal relations come before anything else.

“I like people who say things to my face. This is a fundamental rule of life for me, not only in football but also in your private life.”

Things were different under Sarri’s predecessor Rafa Benitez, though. Gabbiadini scored 15 goals under the Spaniard in 2014-15 before seeing both the goals and his appearances dry up once Sarri arrived.

“My time at Napoli can be split in two,” he said. "The first six months under Benitez worked well. We had a really united group. Benitez took the courageous step of applying a scientific rotation, which meant there was room for everybody when we were playing every three days, between the league and the cups.

"Things changed when Sarri arrived. Sarri took a different route, picking the same players all the time. The others were just sitting in wait; there was a clear distinction between first-teamers and reserves.

“This is also an approach [that some coaches take] but obviously those who are left out cannot be happy in the long term. Benitez’s approach earned the club a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa so I don’t think his strategy was wrong.”

Ben Gladwell reports on Serie A, the Italian national team and the Bundesliga for ESPN FC, UEFA and the Press Association. @UEFAcomBenG.

U23 Report: Newcastle United 2-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton Under-23s will have to wait to see their fate in the Premier League Cup, after they lost 2-0 to their Newcastle United counterparts at Whitley Park.

Substitute Luke Charman’s second-half double proved decisive in a clash that Saints entered into in the knowledge that a win or a draw would see them move on past the group stage of the competition.

Radhi Jaïdi made four changes from the side that lost 2-0 to top-of-the-table Everton at Goodison Park in Premier League 2.

Defender Alfie Jones returned, while Tyreke Johnson, Thomas O’Connor, Harley Willard all came in.

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides, winning successive corners inside five minutes, with O’Connor’s in-swinging delivery being punched away by Matz Sels.

Newcastle had their first chance of the half on eight minutes when Dan Ward collected the ball on the edge of the box, before seeing his shot deflect off Ollie Cook for a corner.

On 22, Ward was involved again when he took Yasin El-Mhanni’s inch-perfect through ball, only to see his effort blocked.

The lively forward then had the ball in the net on 42 minutes when a neat exchange in the box saw Haris Vuckic find his run, and he finished low past Harry Lewis, only to see the flag raised for offside.

In the opening exchanges of the second-half, Saints had the first effort when O’Connor took aim from the edge of the box, seeing his right-footed drive rise harmlessly over the bar.

But after making a double change in search of a winner, Luke Charman scored with one of his first touches, as he fired the ball past Lewis and into the far corner.

Saints responded with a double substitution of their own as Siph Mdlalose and Callum Slattery replaced Jake Hesketh and Harley Willard.

However, the visitors continued to pose the most attacking threat, with Callum Williams seeing his effort saved by Lewis, before Massadio Haidara blazed over from a tight angle.

And as Jaïdi’s men ventured further forward looking for a late leveller, Charman doubled his personal tally for the afternoon when he raced through before finishing across goal, this time with his left foot.

Saints confident over Van Dijk’s future

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are confident of keeping Virgil van Dijk amid speculation of interest from numerous clubs, according to Saints chairman Ralph Krueger.

Van Dijk, who Saints bought for £13m in the summer of 2015, has seen his stock rise considerably after another wonderful season at St Mary’s.

A price tag of around £50m has been rumoured for the Dutchman, who is currently out injured.

Van Dijk signed a new six-year contract at St Mary’s last May and Krueger stressed that he’s not going anywhere.

“Virgil is committed to us for a long time and we don’t see anything but that in our future,” said Krueger.

"We will be sitting together in a few weeks to look at our summer transfer window and what the plans are.

“At the moment, Virgil is very committed to us. He is our team captain and we see him in our red and white stripes.”

Meanwhile, there have been no talks between Saints and Rangers over St Mary’s head of scouting and recruitment Ross Wilson.

The Scottish giants are hunting for a new boss to replace Mark Warburton, but also want to appoint a director of football.

Wilson is said to be the Glasgow club’s number one target for the position.

However, Krueger has stated that there has been no approach yet.

“For us, it’s always a compliment - people always seem to want to come to us to look at our personnel,” said Krueger, when asked about Wilson’s link to Rangers.

“I spoke to Ross last week and we had lunch together and he’s very committed and excited to stay with us. But for us, we never believe that everybody needs to stay with us forever.

“When you grow as a club, people will come, people will go and at the moment Ross Wilson is an important part of our group and he seems committed to where we are moving.

“It’s a compliment to the club that we are getting looked at, at all different levels. But there has been no talks there yet.”

Former Saints defender and academy coach Graeme Murty is currently in caretaker charge at Rangers.

Jaïdi disappointed by Newcastle display

Show/hide article…

Saints went into their final group fixture knowing a win or a draw would see them progress, but a second-half double from substitute Luke Charman means they must wait.

Jaïdi reflected: “We were sloppy all over the pitch. I think we had a great chance in the first-half, where we had the time and space to play on, but we didn’t get that opportunity.

“We were giving away too many balls and we got them into the game I thought, and we didn’t do enough.

“If you want to win games, you need to be on the front foot, doing everything with intensity. When we defend, you have to be pressing with intensity and with the ball you have to be more aggressive.

“This was an opportunity for us to top the group and I’m so disappointed but even more so with the way we lost the game.

“It’s not them these kind of performances because we have better players than that and we know we can do better.”

Martin Tyler’s stats and facts: Who has Cesc Fabregas assisted the most?

From Cesc Fabregas’ main beneficiary to Tottenham’s record against Stoke, Martin Tyler presents the best stats from the latest round of games.

Send your questions to Martin in one of the following ways…

Use the comments box at the bottom of this page.

On Sunday I enjoyed commentating on the 57th League Cup final. It was 50 years since the first at Wembley, which also finished 3-2 between QPR and West Brom.

There were 292 goals in this year’s tournament from 93 games, which is more than three per game. Manchester United took their total of goals to 14, which made them the top scorers in the tournament and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s four goals made him the joint top individual scorer along with Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool.

United’s three goals were the first conceded by Southampton in the competition, having not conceded in their previous five games. The only previous team to achieve that feat was Spurs in 1981/82 when they played seven games without conceding - but also conceded three in a losing final against Liverpool.

Manolo Gabbiadini has five goals in three appearances, the first Southampton player to score in his first three games for the club since Henri Camara in 2005.

Manchester United won their 44th major trophy, equalling Liverpool’s all-time record. Southampton remain on one.

It was also their fourth game at Wembley in less than a year, all won by a one-goal margin (2-1 FA Cup semi-final v Everton, 2-1 FA Cup final v Crystal Palace, 2-1 v Leicester in Community Shield). All were won with late goals.

Two years ago Manchester United’s entire season ran 44 games, but on Saturday they will play in their 44th game of this season live on Sky against Bournemouth. They still have Europa League, FA Cup and 12 Premier League games after that!

Manchester United started by beating Northampton and finished by beating Southampton, so there was some nice symmetry there.

Cesc Fabregas has just gone level with Frank Lampard with 102 Premier League assists, but which player has he assisted the most? David Vardigans

MARTIN SAYS: For Fabregas to move level with Lampard is an incredible feat and puts him second on the all-time Premier League list for assists. Should he stay in England for the next few years, you can see that record of Ryan Giggs’ (162 assists) coming under threat.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been the main beneficiary of a Fabregas assist, scoring 13 times when set up by the Spaniard during their time at Arsenal.

In just over two-and-a-half seasons, Fabregas has already assisted Diego Costa on 10 occasions at Chelsea, while Eden Hazard has scored from five and Pedro four.

Ahead of Hazard however sits another two Arsenal strikers - Robin van Persie scored seven goals thanks to Fabregas, while Thierry Henry netted six before moving to Barcelona in 2007.

Players Cesc Fabregas has assisted most often:

I wonder if he will be involved in Monday Night Football against West Ham this week, having started against Swansea? I will be commentating on that one live on Sky Sports 1.

Tottenham scored four goals against Stoke yet again - the third time in a row in the Premier League. How many times has that happened in Premier League history? Leo Masters

MARTIN SAYS: Only three teams have scored four or more goals against the same opposition in three consecutive Premier League games, while no club has managed this feat four times in a row.

The first to do so were Manchester United, who beat Bradford City 4-0, 4-0 then 6-0 between 1999 and 2000.

Since then, Arsenal managed it against Blackburn (winning 4-0, 4-0 and 6-2 between 2008 and 2009), while Manchester City scored four or more against Bournemouth in their first three meetings following the Cherries’ promotion to the top tier - with scores of 5-1, 4-0 and 4-0.

Spurs have managed three 4-0 wins against Stoke in a row - a fourth next season would be unparalleled.

Stoke’s next away game is against Manchester City, live on Sky Sports, and they will try to avoid this happening again. They have lost their last two fixtures have been 4-1 and 4-0 defeats…

Middlesbrough have scored just 19 goals this season but are still outside of the drop zone. What is the lowest number of goals a team have scored while surviving in the Premier League? Ollie Fletcher

MARTIN SAYS: Middlesbrough have scored 19 goals in their 26 Premier League matches this season and, as you say Ollie, are not currently in the relegation zone.

The team that scored the fewest in a Premier League season and survived were Leeds United in 1996/97. They managed just 28 goals in 38 matches, but that was enough to pick up 11 wins and 46 points as they finished in 11th - six points clear of the drop.

Middlesbrough are scoring 0.73 goals per match at the moment, which is actually lower than that Leeds team (0.74 goals per game). At present, Aitor Karanka’s men are on course to score 27.7 goals so could take that record from Leeds unless they start scoring a few more!

Ryan Fraser has won four penalties this season. What is the record for one Premier League season? Geraint Halliday

MARTIN SAYS: Ryan Fraser earned Bournemouth a fifth-minute penalty when he was brought down by Allan Nyom in the defeat at West Brom. You’re right to say that was the fourth penalty he has earned in the Premier League this season, more than any other player.

Opta have been keeping data on players who have won penalties since the 2003/04 season and in that time we’ve seen five players win more than four penalties in a completed season.

Ashley Young (2010/11), Darren Bent (2009/10) and Luis Suarez (2012/13) all won five penalties in a season, while Jamie Vardy won seven penalties for Leicester last season.

However, the record belongs to Andrew Johnson who won EIGHT penalties for Crystal Palace in 2004/05. Those penalties helped the striker to score an impressive 21 goals in that season.

Most penalties won by one player in a single season:

In fact, those eight penalties mean that Andrew Johnson has won more penalties than anybody else since Opta’s records began in 2003/04.

The eight players to have won 10 or more penalties in that period are:
