Zlatan Ibrahimovic ‘could have moved to Southampton’ from Ajax

Show/hide article…

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the hero for Manchester United as they beat Southampton in the EFL Cup final on Sunday - but could he have been playing for the other team?

The big Swede struck twice as the Red Devils held their nerve after blowing a two-goal lead to secure the first piece of major silverware of the season.

He opened the scoring with a sumptuous free-kick after Manolo Gabbiadini had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside.

Jesse Lingard doubled United’s advantage before a brace from Gabbiadini restored parity at Wembley.

The match seemed to be heading for extra time until Zlatan nodded home from an Ander Herrera cross late in the piece to send the United fans into raptures.

Ibrahimovic famously snubbed Arsenal when he was told he would have to undergo a trial, but the Gunners were apparently not the only Premier League club to show an interest.

“Zlatan continues to amaze,” wrote Ben Smith, a journalist who has formerly worked with the BBC and The Times, on Twitter.

“Once told me he nearly joined #SaintsFC from Ajax. But looks so at home at #MUFC.”

In typically modest fashion after the match, Ibrahimovic insisted he was not surprised by his success in England after hitting his 25th and 26th goals of the season.

“This is what I predicted. I came here to show people what I would do and I’m doing it,” he said.

"After seven months, I have two trophies with this club. There are other clubs that didn’t win for 10 years.

“I keep going. I keep doing what I do every year.”

Saints fans silenced at Southampton pub after cup heartbreak

Show/hide article…

HUNDREDS OF Saints fans at a Southampton pub were awash with glum, disappointed faces after the EFL Cup final heartbreak.

The Alexandra Beer Emporium, in Bellevue Road, was packed out with excited and buzzing supporters ahead of kick-off as Saints aimed to make history.

Fans raised the roof throughout the Wembley showdown against Manchester United, with the atmosphere growing ever more intense as the match progressed.

The pub was heaving with people before kick-off, with some punters even climbing on chairs and tables in a bid to get a good view of the televised match.

However, the mood quietened down as the game kicked off, with nerves already starting to show among the cheers and chants.

The pub’s foundations were still shaking after the crowd exploded with joy following Manolo Gabbiadini’s first half effort – a feeling which quickly turned into disbelief after it was ruled offside.

The fans continued in high spirits and did not let the disallowed goal get them down - chanting, singing and drinking. Every set of eyes was locked on the big screen, waiting in anticipation for Saints to score again.

Towards the end of the first half, Manchester United had built up a 2-0 lead, and fans started to become desperate and frustrated as Saints continued to probe.

The crowd erupted when Saints, through Gabbiadini, scored either side of half time. The room vibrated as fans brought the house down. The belief of a cup win was back.

But United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic had other ideas, and with three minutes of the 90 remaining, the room was silenced as he headed in.

Despite Saints fighting back, fans could only watch through their fingers as the clock counted down to full time.

Four minutes of added time later, the majority of the room knew it was over and every face looked devastated as the final whistle was blown.

Exclusive - Matt Le Tissier: Southampton’s ‘offside’ goal would have stood if Manchester United had scored it

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier claims the Southampton ‘goal’ that was incorrectly struck off for offside in the EFL Cup final would have been allowed to stand if Manchester United had scored it.

United won Sunday’s showdown at Wembley 3-2 in a thrilling match which the Saints dominated for long periods.

But there was controversy in the first-half when January signing Manolo Gabbiadini poked the ball home from close range, but saw the goal ruled out for offside.

Replays showed he was clearly onside and Le Tissier believes if Zlatan Ibrahimovic had scored there’s no way the officials would have dared to strike it off.

The Southampton legend told Max Rushden and Ray Parlour on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “The history of football shows you the bigger clubs get a lot more decisions in their favour than the small ones.

"(If United had scored) it wouldn’t have been given offside, I genuinely think that. The flag wouldn’t have gone up in the first place.

"Big teams get so many more decision you (Max) must see that, surely? Do you think that officials are just not very good and that was a genuine mistake?

"There are certain decisions where the margins are so close, you can understand why mistakes are made.

"I still can’t understand how he can give Gabbiadini offside when the ball was played by Cedric (Soares), he couldn’t even see Gabbiadini because the defender was in the way.

“Surely that gives him a clue that, actually, Gabbiadini wasn’t offside.”

Matt Le Tissier hits out at Man United: They get better treatment from referees

Show/hide article…

Le Tissier was fuming yesterday after Manolo Gabbiadini’s first-half goal in the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United was disallowed.

Replays showed the assistant had made a clear mistake in raising his flag for offside when the Italian stroked home past David de Gea.

And the former England striker believes the issue lies a lot deeper than yesterday’s game.

He said on talkSPORT: “The history of football shows you the bigger clubs get a lot more decisions in their favour than the small ones.

Romeu praises Saints supporters

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu reserved special praise for Southampton’s fans after Saints went close to completing a turnaround in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United.

The midfielder felt that the unwavering support from the stands was vital to the team’s spirited comeback in the contest, which came up just short at Wembley on Sunday.

“I think I’ve never felt that support before, and they made us come back in that way.

“We had another player on the pitch today because of them so we have to be very grateful to them for what they gave us in this game. That first comeback was because of them.”

Southampton fans cheer for pie-eating keeper Wayne Shaw

Show/hide article…

It’s fair to say that Wayne Shaw has endured a fairly eventful time of late.

The saga began with him turning out as Sutton United’s reserve goalkeeper and ended with him out of a job and facing a gambling commission inquiry for eating a pie on television.

However, rather than enjoying a quiet weekend out of the spotlight, Shaw instead managed to snag himself a ticket for the EFL Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Along with many of his Southampton-supporting brethren, Shaw travelled to London on the bus and, almost inevitably, it wasn’t long before the 45-year-old was centre of attention once again.

Among other things, fans chanted “Get your pasty out!” and “It wasn’t a pie it was a pasty!” thus echoing Shaw’s now infamous defence of his controversial stunt.

Question is, does he plan to carry a pie/pasty with him wherever he goes from now on?

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.

Puel: The support was crazy

Show/hide article…

Over 32,000 Saints fans sung their hearts out for 90 minutes, as they watched Puel’s men dominate Manchester United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Though the day ended in heartbreak, as Zlatan Ibrahimvoic won the game for United in the closing stages, it was a proud day for everyone connected with the club.

And the Saints boss was also quick to praise supporters after the game.

“We are with a lot of disappointment for our fans, because they have been fantastic,” Puel told southamptonfc.com.

“They won the competition with the Manchester United fans. All of our support was fantastic – it was crazy!

“It’s a big disappointment for us of course, but they were amazing for this game to help all of the players on the pitch.

“They gave us everything without the good reward at the end.

“Now it’s important to keep up this kind of support for all of the Premier League games, so we can finish strong in the challenge ahead.”

Former Saints manager Koeman angers fans with post-final comment

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints manager Ronald Koeman has infuriated Saints fan by saying the side’s league cup final defeat was the “best result” for his new club.

Saints went 2-0 down to Manchester United and drew level after two goals from Manolo Gabbiadini, but a late winner from Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke Southampton hearts at the last.

But Everton manager Koeman, rather than keeping his own counsel, decided he would comment on the result.

He wrote on Twitter: "The best result for Everton - 7th place Europe?

Saints fans responded angrily, with one referring to Koeman as a “snake”, while many messages were unprintable.

Another wrote: “You had a chance in Europe with Saints but money was more important to you.”

Liverpool change Twitter bio ahead of Manchester United’s EFL Cup win

Show/hide article…

Liverpool were forced to alter their Twitter bio by a Manchester United supporter ahead of the EFL Cup final against Southampton.

Liverpool’s profile claimed the mantle of being “England’s most successful club with 41 major honours”, but a United win at Wembley would see the Red Devils match the trophy haul.

Possibly predicting that United would indeed beat Southampton, Liverpool removed the phrase ahead of kick-off.

The club’s new bio now reads: “Official worldwide account of Liverpool FC.”

United made no mistake against Southampton to record a 3-2 win at the home of English football on Sunday afternoon.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed in his second of the game three minutes from time to help secure the Old Trafford club their 41st piece of major silverware - equaling the achievements of Liverpool.

The Reds previously stood alone at the top of the trophy charts with 18 league titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups, five European Cups and three UEFA Cups.

However, United’s win at Wembley secured the club its fifth triumph in the League Cup to add to their record 20 league titles, 12 FA Cups, three European Cups and one Cup Winners’ Cup win.

Other trophies, including the Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, are not classed as major honours.

United could move ahead of their bitter rivals if they win either the FA Cup or Europa League this season, while both clubs still hold faint hopes of catching Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title.
