10 things we learned from the weekend’s Premier League and EFL Cup final action

Show/hide article…

The weekend may have been light on Premier League action, with the Manchester derby and Arsenal’s game against Southampton postponed due to the EFL Cup final, and Leicester hosting Liverpool on Monday.

But the season’s first Wembley showpiece more than made up for that, as Manchester United counted their lucky stars and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s many attacking attributes to edge past Claude Puel’s side 3-2.

The Swede was very nearly upstaged by Manolo Gabbiadini, who scored two and had a third - incorrectly - ruled out

But Jose Mourinho ultimately became the first ever Manchester United manager to win a major trophy in his debut season with the club, even if it was a tad harsh on Southampton.

Back in the Premier League, Chelsea won yet again to maintain the momentum in their march to the title, while Tottenham bounced back from their Europa League disappointment to spank Stoke.

Read on for everything we learned this weekend:

There is a reason Zlatan Ibrahimovic gets away with being so bullish and arrogant in his frequent declarations of self-worth – because he delivers on the big occasion time and time again.

The 35-year-old striker scored twice in the EFL Cup final – including an 87th-minute winner – to virtually single-handedly land the first trophy of the Jose Mourinho era at United and take his goal tally for the season to 26.

Ibrahimovic is said to be stalling on signing up to United for a second year because of the uncertainty over whether they will be in the Champions League next season.

With his kind of enduring brilliance, United can’t afford not to have him next season.

Who says there are no strikers of value out there?

That’s the common refrain from many current managers, who bemoan the lack of forward talent out there.

But Claude Puel has landed a star in Manolo Gabbiadini, a £14m buy from Napoli.

Gabbiadni’s two expertly-taken EFL Cup final goals against United took his total to five in three games for Saints, or eight in his last six if you include his final run of games for his former club.

The 25-year-old tormented United’s defence, who had no answer to his speed of thought and movement, as well as his deadly finishing.

Cesc Fabregas scored the opening goal on his 300th Premier League appearance as Chelsea beat Swansea 3-1 and remind us all that he is a top class player, one of the best midfielders of his generation.

The Spain World Cup winner enjoyed a glorious career at Arsenal, went to Barcelona and did not quite live up to his hopes but has found a nice home at Chelsea.

Although not a guaranteed starter, Fabregas is one hell of a player to have on the bench and in the squad. He started this one, scored with a nice finish and showed what a valuable player he has been for Chelsea.

Ashley Williams is growing massively into a leadership role at Goodison, after what was a tricky start to his Blues career, given the almost constant changes in the back line in his early weeks.

He is one of the most consistent centre halves in the league, and you wonder why he wasn’t at a top four club many years ago.

Maybe his time has come with Everton. He was certainly on point in Everton’s win against Sunderland, sweeping up the danger and marshaling his defenders with authority.

Michael Keane showed great character as Burnley came from behind to share the spoils with Hull.

Keane might have gone into his shell when he handled to give away the spot-kick for Hull’s opener.

He was under pressure from Harry Maguire when he handled, but he was still leading with his arm up.

Instead the Clarets centre-half was determined to make up for his error and he showed great composure to score their equaliser just five minutes later.

He chested down Robbie Brady’s corner before lashing home with his left foot.

The on-loan Arsenal midfielder was subbed in the 66th minute of Bournemouth’s trip to the Hawthorns after failing to have much influence in the match against West Brom.

He might have got on the end of Fraser’s 42nd minute cross if he had been a bit braver in committing when Dawson was rushing in.

Andy Carroll had scored five goals in six starts before his latest sicknote with a groin strain, and West Ham boss Slaven Bilic decided to take no risks with his injury on a damp, blowy evening in Hertfordshire.

Michail Antonio’s industry, versatility and goals have been major assets for the Hammers this season when Bilic has been short of recognised strikers.

But the Eastenders’ attack often lacked a focal point for the stream of crosses – high and low – from the flanks against Watford.

For long periods, West Ham enjoyed more possession and territory, but until sub Andre Ayew’s equaliser, there was not enough end product.

Allardyce’s pre-match words about his team not listening to his instructions were harsh – and risked an adverse reaction from his squad.

But instead Palace came out firing against Middlesbrough with arguably their best performance under their new manager and could have won by more.

They set up with three centre-backs against Crystal Palce on Saturday, but the two wing-backs – Fabio and Stewart Downing – played very deep and offered little attacking threat.

When Palace took the lead, Boro needed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

They didn’t – or couldn’t. Every week the table looks worse.

Every top side has one and for Spurs it is Harry Kane. The north Londoners’ high-class marksman was at his predatory best to wipe out Stoke single-handedly.

The first of those goals, in his 36-minute hat-trick, was the 100th of his career. He could have had another too. The effort he curled goalwards in the 27th-minute flew only narrowly wide.

He tracked back, he foraged out wide and of course he set up Dele Alli - all before his half-time orange. His was not just a man of the match display because of the goals.

Kane earned the match ball because of a performance of the highest class. Still only 23 and having played only 219 matches, Spurs have produced a potentially world class striker with his best years ahead of him.

Puel wants video technology after final controversy

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insisted he would graciously accept the controversial refereeing decision that robbed his side of an early goal in the EFL Cup final – but believes it underlines the need for video technology in football.

Manolo Gabbiadini had what appeared to be a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside after just 11 minutes against Manchester United at Wembley.

Replays confirmed that Gabbiadini was onside when Cedric Soares crossed to him, but Ryan Bertrand lurking behind the Italian was offside. However, it was a big leap to say the left back was interfering with play, meaning the use of video technology would almost certainly have seen Saints take the lead.

Puel said: “I would like of course the video for the future, for this situation for example.

“For the moment in football without video and just sometimes a bad decision and against us for the team.

“It’s important to accept this but I am disappointed for the players and for the fans.

“Congratulations for the fans because I think they with their support win this.”

Gabbiadini did go on to score twice in the game – to make it five in three matches since his £14m January move to St Mary’s – as Saints fought back from 2-0 down only to lose to a cruel late goal.

When asked whether that early goal would have changed the game had it been allowed, Puel replied: “It is always better to win 1-0 of course because it was a very good start on the game with many chances.

“We need a good reward to score at this moment and the first free kick, the first time, is the first goal.

“The second situation we took a second goal. To shoot, two goals, with all this quality on the pitch was very hard.

“We kept the good attitude and spirit to stay on the game just before the half.

“It was fantastic for the players and to equalise gives also the good emotions and good feeling to continue this work.

“It’s very hard when we see this game to lose this game but it’s football.

“I said before the game of course we were underdogs but now I think we can say it was a good thing to see it was possible to win when we saw this game.”

Puel now has the task of trying to lift his squad for the remaining 13 Premier League games between now and the end of the season.

“We will see this (the reaction) tomorrow and the next day,” said a rueful Puel.

“I think for the next games of course it is difficult but it will be difficult with a good result or a bad result.

“Now we got to play in the Premier League with games every two weeks because we cannot play against Arsenal and Manchester United.

“We played since the beginning of the season every two or three days and now we stay every two weeks without a game and this is difficult for the team to keep good concentration.

“We would like to continue with this good level and quality. It will be a good challenge to stay with concentration and it will be important for us.”

Romeu: Our fans inspired our EFL Cup final comeback

Show/hide article…

The 32,000-strong following from the south coast gave Saints terrific support from first minute to last during a breathtaking EFL Cup final.

Midfielder Romeu insists they were the inspiration behind Saints’ comeback from 2-0 down to 2-2 against Manchester United.

After the gut-wrenching 3-2 defeat, he said: “I’ve never seen that support before, they helped us come back. We have to be very grateful to them, that comeback was because of them.

“The goal disallowed is something that happened, we all make mistakes and after that we had tough moments.

“That makes a massive difference in the game but the team responded amazingly.

“It was a great comeback. Scoring before half-time was the right moment to get one back and then we got another good goal.

“It should have been a massive difference, we were so close to winning a title only to lose in last few minutes of the game.”

Saints are next in action at Watford on Saturday.

“We have a week to come back,” said Romeu. “If we look into the game the team has played amazingly.

“The way we did our jobs we can’t say anything bad about how we played and came back into the game.

“We were so close to winning.”

Romeu agrees that Manolo Gabbiadini has given Saints a different dimension since his arrival.

“Manolo’s been amazing, as a teammate of his we just want to make him happy and help him play that way and keep scoring goals.

“To be fair not many had seen him play before but he’s been very good. Every time he has a chance he puts the ball in and that’s what we want.”

The Saints star said: "I’m heartbroken, the boys played terrific. I haven’t got the words to sum it up, it’s just heartbreaking.

"We started well obviously the goal got disallowed but we felt comfortable as a team.

"It’s just disappointing. The fans were fantastic we couldn’t wish for a better set of fans.

“Thankyou to them on behalf of everyone in the dressing room. They’ve got us through the competition and today.”

Jose Mourinho convinced Zlatan Ibrahimovic will stay at Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he is convinced Zlatan Ibrahimovic will stay at the club, and joked that fans should “go to the door of his house” to convince him.

Ibrahimovic produced a superb performance in the EFL Cup final win over Southampton to fire his side to victory with his 25th and 26th goals of the season

The 35-year-old has emphatically silenced those who doubted his ability to adapt to English football and Mourinho is desperate keep hold of his first-choice striker, whose contract with United expires at the end of the current campaign.

“I never beg for a player to sign a contract,” Mourinho said. "I never beg for a player to play for me.

"One day, Zlatan decided to [leave me and Inter Milan to join) Barcelona, I was very sad, but I did nothing to try to stop him to go, so I don’t beg for players.

“But, if needed, maybe United fans can go to the door of his house, and stay there all night, if needed. We all want, and believe, that he is going to stay another season.”

Mourinho also praised Southampton for helping to provide a “beautiful final”.

United held off a spirited fightback from Saints to triumph 3-2 at Wembley as Mourinho claimed his first major silverware at the club.

Two Manolo Gabbiadini goals either side of half-time cancelled out strikes from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard, only for the Swede to head home three minutes from time to secure victory for the Old Trafford club.

Mourinho admits his side rode their luck at times during the match and expressed his sympathy for losing manager Claude Puel.

“First of all, the man that just left table [Southampton manager Claude Puel] has a reason to be really sad and disappointed,” said Mourinho.

"His team did fantastic work, deserved extra-time, and to lose in the 87th minute gives very little time to try to react.

"It’s a bit unfair for them. They gave us a beautiful final, a beautiful match.

"I’m obviously very happy with the victory, with the fact that I did it four times, the same as Mr Clough, and with a chance to win for a fifth time.

"The game was broken at 2-2. We were lucky to be 2-0 (up). Then 2-1 changed completely the direction of the game. Obviously the 2-2: a phenomenal goal.

“Technically it’s such a difficult shot. Then the game is broken.”

Mourinho appeared subdued after the final whistle and largely avoided celebrating with his players.

“It’s one of these finals that I don’t like,” he said. "I like the finals like before, Chelsea-Manchester United, Chelsea-Arsenal, Chelsea-Liverpool, Chelsea-Tottenham.

“These are the finals I like, because you are not the favourite; you don’t have more responsibility on your shoulder. This game is tricky, it’s a tricky final.”

All the pictures as Saints are cruelly denied by Manchester United

Show/hide article…

It all ended in late heartbreak for Saints as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was once again the tormentor. That’s four goals against Saints in two games this season for the Swede.

Saints were remarkable. They never gave up. They were heroes, but they some how ended up on the wrong end of this result.

Manolo Gabbiadini was sensational again for Saints, as he netted a brace to level things up after United had taken a 2-0 lead.

Ibrahimovic curled in a free kick to make it 1-0 on 19 minutes before Lingard curled home on 38 minutes to make it 2-0.

Gabbiadini, who has now scored five goals in three games for Saints, then clipped home from close range to make it 2-1.

Then, to send the 32,000 travelling Saints supporters into complete madness, Gabbiadini then volleyed home on the turn from ten yards to make it 2-2.

Saints rallied further and had chances to win, but were undone by Manchester United in heartbreaking fashion.

A dinked cross by Ander Herrera found an unmarked Ibra to head home the winner on 87 minutes.

Despite the result Saints should come away with their heads held high from Wembley. On a different day this would have gone thier way.

Photographers Stuart Martin and Chris Moorhouse were at Wembley to get pictures of the action, be sure to check out the pictures below.

Puel praises Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Gabbiadini scored twice, as Saints were edged out by José Mourinho’s side, but controversially saw an early strike incorrectly disallowed for offside.

Puel was quick to praise his striker, who he felt was the best player on the pitch.

“He scored three goals and was the best player of the final,” said Puel.

“He was better than Ibrahimovic. Both players know how important it is to score goals.

“He’s now scored five goals in three games, it should be six of course, and it’s fantastic for him and for the team.

“He is helping us to be more clinical. It’s important for the team to keep this spirit, with the same attitude.

“We need to make sure that we take our chances in the Premier League now.”

Southampton: Claude Puel wants video technology for offside after EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel says he would like to see video technology used for offside after Manolo Gabbiadini’s disallowed goal in the 3-2 EFL Cup final defeat by Manchester United.

Gabbiadini scored twice to bring Saints level at 2-2, but had what would have been the opener incorrectly ruled out.

“Gabbiadini’s first was a good goal, it should have stood. He scored three good goals,” Puel said.

“It’s a lot of disappointment. We deserved better,” the Frenchman added.

"I would like the video for the future for this situation, but at the moment we are without. Sometimes there is a bad decision against us, it is important to accept this.

“The memories are always for the winner. It’s football and congratulations for Manchester. I’m proud of my players because we played very well.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic collected the 32nd trophy of his career after heading an 87th-minute winner at Wembley on Sunday, having earlier given United the lead with a brilliant 19th-minute free-kick.

Jesse Lingard put United 2-0 in front before Gabbiadini struck twice - his fourth and fifth goals in three games since joining from Napoli for £14m.

"Puel has reason to be really sad and disappointed because he did fantastic work and his team deserved extra time,’’ United manager Jose Mourinho said.

“To lose in minute 87 with very little time to try to react, as they did in the first half, is a little bit unfair on them.”

Goalline technology - to determine whether the ball has crossed the line - was brought in to the Premier League for the start of the 2013-14 season.

And a trial - possibly in Britain - using video assistant referees for “game-changing decisions” will begin no later than the 2017-18 campaign, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has said.
