Premier League managers: Ranking every boss based on job security

Show/hide article…

The lifespan of a Premier League manager is getting shorter and shorter as owners develop an itchier trigger fingers.

The merry-go-round of managerial appointments is in full swing and shows no sign of stopping with Mark Hughes stepping in at Southampton.

There is no such confusion for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, who looks set to stay at the Etihad for the foreseeable future.

But which Premier League boss is most at risk of losing their job, and who is secure?

We have ranked the managers of all 20 Premier League squads in order of job security. So the higher the manager, the more insecure they are in their job.

New TV rights deal helps Southampton post record turnover

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Despite their perilous position in the Premier League, Southampton reported record revenue of 182.3 million pounds ($258 million) for the year ending June 30, 2017, boosted by income growth and participation in last season’s Europa League.

St Mary’s Football Group Ltd, the club’s parent company, said on Friday that profit after tax rose to 34.1 million pounds from 4.9 million a year earlier, while net debt of 38.9 million pounds was converted to net cash of 2.9 million in 2017.

The nearly 47 percent rise in revenue year-on-year was driven mainly by the league’s new bumper television rights deal and the club having more live games televised than in the previous campaign.

Southampton were also helped by their participation in the Europa League group stages and a run to the League Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United.

The positive financial results will raise hopes that the club can arrest the trend of losing their top talent to their rivals. However, Southampton’s struggles in the league this season are sure to temper any optimism.

Saints have long been criticised for selling their best players and lost wide forward Sadio Mane to Liverpool in the period for which they reported results.

The team are currently in the relegation zone with eight matches to play, and parted company with manager Mauricio Pellegrino earlier this month, bringing in Mark Hughes as his replacement.

“The performance of the team always remains our ultimate focus, and through continuing to strengthen our financial position we give ourselves the best opportunity of driving improvement on the pitch,” managing director Toby Steele said in a statement.

Mane is one of several players who has made the switch from St. Mary’s Stadium to Anfield in recent seasons and Southampton also sold defender Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool in January.

The Van Dijk sale for a reported 75 million pounds was sanctioned despite the club receiving an injection of capital when Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao purchased an 80 percent stake for about 210 million pounds in August last year.

Cédric features in dramatic Portugal win

Show/hide article…

The sides met in a friendly in Zurich, with a second-half effort from Liverpool’s Mo Salah looking like it was going to give Egypt a victory.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo struck two goals deep into added time to turn the game completely on its head.

Cédric and EURO 2016 champions Portugal will remain in Switzerland over the weekend, ahead of another friendly on Monday night, when the Netherlands meet them in Geneva.

Cédric will then return to Southampton for the upcoming Premier League visit to West Ham.

Tadić scores on 50th Serbia appearance

Show/hide article…

Tadić converted with a smart, right-footed finish into the bottom corner in the 37th minute, after Adam Ljajić’s clever through-pass had picked out his run in behind.

That had levelled things up for Serbia, who trailed to a Hakim Ziyech penalty in the 29th minute.

Parity was short-lived, however, as Khalid Boutaïb restored Morocco’s advantage five minutes before the interval, with that strike proving to be enough to separate the sides in Italy.

Tadić’s Saints teammate Boufal was part of the Morocco squad for the game, but did not see any action, finishing as an unused substitute.

He will hope to see some action next Tuesday, when Morocco continue their World Cup preparations with a home friendly against Uzbekistan, in Casablanca.

That same night, Tadić and Serbia head to London for the latest part of their build-up to this summer’s finals in Russia, as they face Nigeria in a friendly at Barnet’s Hive Stadium.

Long features for Ireland

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Shane Long was introduced as a second-half substitute in Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 friendly defeat against Turkey.

Turkey captain Mehmet Topal’s strike early in the second half proved the difference, as the hosts claimed a narrow win in Antalya.

With Ireland coach Martin O’Neill naming a largely-inexperienced side for his team’s first game of 2018, Long started among the subs, before being introduced in the 62nd minute.

The Irish were more of a threat with the Saints forward on the pitch, but were unable to earn an equaliser, despite some late chances.

O’Neill’s men will be back in action at the end of May, when they visit France, with Long now returning to Southampton ahead of next weekend’s Premier League visit to West Ham.
