West Ham’s James Collins a major doubt for Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

James Collins has just a small chance of being fit to play in the crucial match against Southampton next weekend.

The defender came off during the fundraising game against Dagenham and Redbridge on Wednesday after his hamstring problem flared up again. The injury has plagued him for much of the season and a scan showed he still has an issue with it. With fellow defenders Winston Reid and Sam Byram out, the setback presents West Ham boss David Moyes with a problem ahead of the clash against their relegation-threatened rivals at the London Stadium.

Collins, 34, is one of the club’s key leaders, so it would be a huge blow for them to be without him.

Meanwhile, West Ham’s match at Arsenal has been moved for the second time in less than a month.

On February 27 the Premier League announced the derby would be on April 23 as it had been selected by Sky TV for its Monday night slot. However, yesterday it was revealed the match at Emirates Stadium had been brought forward 24 hours to the Sunday because Arsenal could be in the Europa League semi-finals the following Thursday.

When the original decision was taken last month, Arsenal had yet to play their last-16 tie against AC Milan and there were still six English clubs in European competition, complicating the choices for the April 21-23 round of fixtures.

However, the move has angered some fans who had bought tickets for the Monday night game but cannot attend on the Sunday.

The switch means a busy day of sport in the capital, kicking off with the London Marathon, followed by the derby at 1.30pm and the FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Southampton at Wembley at 3pm.

Check these out – How Premier League kits would look on F1 cars

Show/hide article…

As the Premier League season enters the home straight, Formula One is revving up and about to get under way.

Last year, Lewis Hamilton won his fourth Drivers’ Championship, with Sebastian Vettel finishing the season second, and Valtteri Bottas third, ahead of his fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen.

The Englishman already looks favourite to retain his crown, with his Mercedes looking as fast as ever in Melbourne.

The Australian Grand Prix is first up for Hamilton but will he dominate his opponents just like Manchester City have in the Premier League this?

If he does, he’ll be doing it in a car which has a sleek new design, including the new ‘Halo’ safety feature.

It’s safe to say the vehicles are as dashing as ever, but how would they look if they were designed for Premier League teams?

Well, designer Sean Bull, who has worked with F1 teams and drivers, has worked on this, in conjunction with DriveTribe, and created the F1 Premier League.

Southampton apply to join Women’s Championship

Show/hide article…

Southampton have joined Manchester United in applying to enter a women’s team in next season’s Women’s Championship, BBC Sport has learned.

Saints and United, who announced their bid on Wednesday, are the only two Premier League clubs currently without an affiliated senior women’s team.

Southampton currently run female youth sides up to under-21 level, but now want a senior team too.

The Football Association will not name the successful bids until after 27 May.

Other applicants for places in the restructured women’s leagues already have senior women’s teams playing at lower levels of the pyramid.

If both Southampton and United are successful it will mean that every Premier League club has an affiliated women’s side next season.

The FA - which runs the women’s leagues in England - say there are up to five spaces available for licences in next season’s restructured second tier, which was renamed as the Women’s Championship in February.

BBC Sport understands the division has been heavily oversubscribed, with clubs including Crystal Palace and Sheffield United having also confirmed their bids to join the league.

Watford, an existing second-tier side who opted not to apply in autumn’s initial closed application phase, are also now believed to have submitted a bid to remain in tier two, but will face additional competition from clubs including Charlton Athletic and Lewes FC.

You can now add WSL 1 notifications for line-ups, goals, kick-off, half-time and results in the BBC Sport app. Visit this page to find out how to sign-up.

Revealed: The most underrated player at every Premier League club

Show/hide article…

There is a lot to be said for a player who can put the team before himself, someone who grafts regardless of the circumstances.

When Claude Makelele left Real Madrid in 2003, Zinedine Zidane famously remarked: “Why put another layer of gold on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?”

The work the France midfielder did to allow his teammate to thrive was invaluable, and the role of the underrated player is still as pertinent today as it has ever been.

Last week, talkSPORT brought you the most overrated players in the Premier League but, for a change, we are celebrating the division’s unsung heroes.

West Ham’s Jordan Hugill targets Southampton involvement

Show/hide article…

West Ham striker Jordan Hugill says he hopes to feature against Southampton in the Premier League after scoring his first goal in a friendly win over Dagenham and Redbridge.

The 25-year-old, who signed from Sky Bet Championship side Preston on Deadline Day for £10 million, scored the third in a 3-1 win at the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Wednesday.

Hugill has only featured twice as a substitute for the Hammers - coming on in the 80th and 88th minute against Brighton and Watford respectively - following 10 goals in 29 appearances for Preston this season.

He told West Ham’s official website: "Obviously, the goal was good for me and good for the team and the 90 minutes I played and the hard work I put in should put me in the manager’s mind.

"But, at the end of the day it’s down to the manager and not down to me and it’s one of those things where I’ll keep plugging away and plugging away and, when my time comes, I’ll be ready for it.

“I’m really excited for the Southampton game, which is a massive game for the Club and one that, if I play my part in it, I’d be delighted. It’s a massive game so hopefully we can come out on top.”

The Hammers are just two points clear of 18th place Southampton after losing their last three games, including a 3-0 home defeat to Burnley, which was marred with fan trouble.

Southampton apply to enter team in 2018-19 Women’s Super League 2

Show/hide article…

Southampton have applied to enter their first team into the Women’s Super League 2 next season, Sky Sports News understands.

The Saints follow Manchester United, who submitted a bid earlier this week.

The pair are currently the only two Premier League clubs without an affiliated senior women’s team.

The FA say there are up to five spaces available in next season’s restructured second tier.

The Women’s Super League 2 is currently made up of 10 teams; Doncaster Belles, Millwall Lionesses, Durham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Tottenham, Oxford United, Sheffield, London Bees, Aston Villa and Watford.

United scrapped their women’s team in 2005 but former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis believes they have the potential to be very successful, given the wealth of resources at the club’s disposal.

Professional women’s football has dramatically improved in quality and popularity in the last decade.

United’s rivals Manchester City have emerged as one of the dominant teams in England in just three seasons, winning a league and cup double in 2016 and last season’s FA Women’s Cup.
