Liverpool to avoid punishment for alleged ‘tapping up’ of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are set to escape punishment for allegedly tapping up Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Saints reported the Reds to the Premier League after numerous reports emerged suggesting the Holland international had decided he wanted to join Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, with no bid made, Southampton took their grievance to the authorities, prompting an immediate apology from Liverpool - accepted by the south-coast side - and a commitment to end their interest in the centre-back.

A preliminary investigation was launched by the Premier League but has stalled as there is insufficient evidence to support Southampton’s claim.

It is understood that, unless new information comes to light, there will not be any more progress with the inquiry, effectively allowing Liverpool to avoid a sanction.

Should Chelsea be looking at Sakho rather than Van Dijk?

Show/hide article…

Chelsea look set to turn their attention to Southampton’s £70m-rated Virgil van Dijk in their pursuit of a top-class centre-back, although want away Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho could prove a better fit.

Leonardo Bonucci had been their first choice target but, as reported by Standard Sport, Juventus are unwilling to entertain offers, meaning the London club must look elsewhere.

Whilst Van Dijk has certainly impressed in his two seasons at St. Mary’s, this is an eye-watering sum for a player who has little experience in competing for top honours outside of Scotland, with his last Champions League appearance coming for Celtic in 2013.

Chelsea look set to continue next season with the 3-4-3 formation that Antonio Conte implemented so successfully at Stamford Bridge, and the Italian manager is keen to bring in an accomplished ball-playing defender to bolster his backline.

27-year old Sakho, however, has the attributes that could make him a more appropriate target for the Premier League Champions.

Sakho’s exclusion at Anfield is seemingly due to a personal clash with the Jurgen Klopp rather than a question of ability and, although there has been little to suggest that Chelsea have expressed an interest in him, a move for the former Crystal Palace loanee could well be a shrewd one.

Gary Cahill performed with great credit on the left-hand side of Chelsea’s back three last season, yet a left-footed player in that role would give the side better balance in both attack and defence.

The acquisition of Van Diljk would represent more of a like-for-like replacement for Cahill, with the right-footed defender often deployed on the left of Southampton’s defensive two.

Whilst he may not be uncomfortable playing on that side, Van Dijk has never been used in a back-three before, and you have to question the wisdom of shelling out the fourth highest transfer fee for all time for a player who will have to adapt to a new system.

Sakho, on the other hand, is left-footed and certainly boasts the ball playing attributes that Conte desires. With most of his experience also in a four-man defence, his natural desire to open his body on that side would give Chelsea a dimension that they lack with Cahill, or potentially with Van Dijk.

A key aspect to Van Dijk’s play is his willingness to carry the ball out from the back in Southampton’s transition from defence to attack. With Chelsea set to sign AS Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko, who provides this drive from a defensive midfield role, the Dutchman would need to be more positionally astute, especially alongside the expansive David Luiz.

Sakho, on the other hand, is a capable passer of the ball with less the athleticism to cover behind effectively. He is versatile in terms of the role he can play, as shown by his differing statistics for Liverpool in 2015/16 and Crystal Palace last season.

For the possession hungry Liverpool he averaged 51.7 completed passes per 90 minutes, whereas this number dropped to 24.14 for the more defensive minded Palace. Similarly he averaged 0.97 tackles won per game in Liverpool’s high-line, but this dropped to 0.13 as he was utilised in a deeper unit.

Conte is very much a malleable manager, and we saw last season how he is happy to chop and change both formation and strategy during games. Not only would Sakho slip seamlessly into the stock formation, but he also has the physical presence and footballing nous to adapt to Conte’s instructions.

Crystal Palace had been quoted £30m in their pursuit for Sakho, who made such an impact for the club in just eight Premier League appearances. They won five of these games and kept four clean sheets in a run which blasted them out of a relegation scrap.

It is likely that Liverpool would demand more from a title-rival for his services, but the sum would still fall a long way short for the £70m quoted for Van Dijk.

Due to his difficulties at Liverpool, it is easy to forget just how good Sakho is. He amassed over 200 performances for PSG, winning all four domestic trophies and establishing himself as first choice for France over Laurent Koscielny.

Southampton have boasted top defenders in recent seasons, such as Toby Alderweireld and Dejan Lovren, and van Dijk looks to have immense potential.

Yet Cesar Azpilicueta was one of the stand-out players in last season’s Premier League, so it is on the left where Chelsea will be looking to strengthen, where Sakho is the better fit.

The acquisition of Bakayoko will turn Chelsea’s engine room into a powerhouse, so finding a natural balance in the defensive three will be high on Antonio Conte’s agenda.

Sakho fits that bill and, whilst Van Dijk will undoubtedly prove a successful, signing for one of Europe’s top clubs, £70m may well prove to be too steep for a player whose strengths aren’t necessarily the ones Chelsea are lacking.

Summer transfer window: Which Premier League clubs have been busiest?

Show/hide article…

With the transfer window open and players starting to return for pre-season training, we bring you up to date with what business each Premier League club has done so far this summer.

The window swung open in England on June 9 - though some deals will only become official on July 1 - and sides have until August 31 to finalise their signings for the new campaign.

However, while some teams have been quick off the mark when it comes to recruiting new players, others have been lagging behind as they look to make their first captures of the close season.

So who has been busy splashing the cash so far and who has yet to get their cheque books out?

Arsenal have only signed Schalke left-back Sead Kolasinac so far, although the club are in talks with Lyon to sign Alexandre Lacazette, according to Sky sources. Lyon’s president, however, says he will keep the striker unless the Gunners match their £57m valuation.

Eddie Howe is increasingly confident of agreeing a £20m deal to sign Chelsea defender Nathan Ake after luring a goalkeeper from Stamford Bridge. Asmir Begovic is board and says he is “really excited” to be joining the Bournemouth “project” after also swapping the champions for the Cherries.

Chris Hughton has wasted little time bringing in new recruits after the club’s promotion to the Premier League, including Valencia 'keeper Matt Ryan. “For somebody of Mathew’s age, he has very good experience, having played in the top divisions in Australia, Belgium and Spain,” said the Brighton boss of his new No 1.

Midfield duo Michael Kightly and Joey Barton are the two big-name departures while the club will be desperate to keep key central defender Michael Keane. Boss Sean Dyche has yet to lure any new recruits, though.

Antonio Conte was reportedly frustrated with the Chelsea hierarchy over a lack of investment in the transfer market, but the champions are confident the Italian is committed to them, Sky sources understand.

The Blues are in talks to sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Juventus left-back Alex Sandro though doubts remain over Diego Costa’s future after the striker claimed: “Chelsea do not want me there.”

Palace have had to prioritise a new boss but Frank de Boer has made it clear he now wants fresh faces, saying in his first press conference: “Every year English clubs spend a lot of money, so it is possible to do something well. I have to see the players first, but I have my ideas, maybe one or two signings.”

The Toffees have been one of the biggest spenders of the summer so far, bringing in 'keeper Jordan Pickford and midfielder Davy Klaassen at a cost of more than £50m, with KAS Eurpen striker Henry Onyekuru to follow.

Director of football Steve Walsh was in Milan recently to discuss the possible transfer of six players - three from AC Milan and three from Inter - according to Sky in Italy as the club prepare for Ross Barkley’s likely exit.

The Terriers secured promotion to the Premier League at the end of May and have already signed Porto striker Laurent Depoitre for a club-record fee, while they are also closing in on deals for Montpellier forward Steve Mounie and Man City midfielder Aaron Mooy, say Sky sources. However, the club failed with a £7.2m bid for Derby midfielder Tom Ince.

Craig Shakespeare’s first signing after becoming the full-time Foxes boss was defender Harry Maguire, but according to Sky sources, the club are also interested in Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho, while they saw a £10m bid for Jonny Evans rejected by West Brom.

Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool’s transfer business is likely to take longer to conduct than he would like this summer, although that has not prevented the club from completing deals for Dominic Solanke and Mo Salah.

“The best scenario is that you have them for the start of pre-season, but I’m not sure if it will happen this time,” he said last month. One player Klopp is eyeing is Kylian Mbappe, but the German is not convinced the Monaco striker wants to move to the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola says he is “happy” with the club’s transfer business after City signed Bernardo Silva and Ederson.

“The club has made a good effort,” he said, with the Catalan also interested in Juventus defender Dani Alves and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to Sky sources.

Having captured Victor Lindelof, Jose Mourinho is after three more top signings. In addition to the Sweden centre-back, the United boss is also looking to add a central midfielder and a defender capable of playing either right or left back. Monaco midfielder Fabinho has admitted he would be “tempted” by a move to Old Trafford.

Despite speculation linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a sensational return, Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata is understood to remain a top target, with Mourinho keen to add to his ranks before the squad flies to the USA on July 9.

Rafael Benitez has been told the club shares his frustration as they await a significant breakthrough in the transfer market. A recent report said the Magpies boss may leave St James’ after becoming disillusioned over a stalling recruitment drive which to date amounts only to the permanent capture of loan signing Christian Atsu.

Mauricio Pellegrino was only recently named Saints manager, meaning the club are yet to make any new signings. However, with rivals reportedly interested in defenders Ryan Bertrand and Virgil van Dijk, the Argentine is sure to want to get down to work in the market.

The Potters have added experience to their midfield by signing Darren Fletcher from West Brom, while the club have also vowed to keep hold of both forward Xherdan Shaqiri and captain Ryan Shawcross.

Chairman Huw Jenkins says he has received no firm bids for “priceless” Gylfi Sigurdsson and is looking to keep both him and last season’s top-scorer Fernando Llorente. The Swans are close to signing Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on loan, say Sky sources.

Spurs are yet to do any business, although the club are prepared to wait for Everton to lower their asking price for Ross Barkley, according to Sky sources. Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira is one of a number of players Mauricio Pochettino is considering to replace Kyle Walker should he leave for City, we understand.

New manager Marco Silva says the ambition of the club’s owners excites him and the Portuguese has already brought in midfielders Tom Cleverley and Will Hughes since arriving at Vicarage Road earlier this summer.

The Baggies, who have offloaded midfielder Darren Fletcher to Stoke, hope to bring in the likes of Chelsea centre-back John Terry and Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez this summer, according to Sky sources.

Mark Noble says he wants the club to get active in the transfer market and add more big names to their squad ahead of the new season, with City ‘keeper Joe Hart and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud both on the Hammers’ radar, according to Sky sources.

Spurs join European giants eyeing Southampton defender

Show/hide article…

Tottenham have joined the list of clubs interested in Southampton right-back Cedric Soares.

Spurs’ former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino has the 25-year-old under consideration as Manchester City are keen on his current first-choice at the position, England international Kyle Walker.

Soares won Euro 2016 with Portugal last summer and has maintained his consistency since joining Southampton from Sporting Lisbon two years ago for just £4.7million.

Southampton are now battling to keep him.

He signed a new four-year contract last August but Saints are willing to hand him his second new deal in 12 months in a desperate bid to persuade him to stay.

Soares has a number of options, however, with Italian champions Juventus seeing him as a potential replacement for Manchester City target Dani Alves.

Barcelona also have him as a fall-back option, should they fail in their pursuit of Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin.

Chelsea eye Virgil van Dijk raid ahead of Juventus ace Leonardo Bonucci

Show/hide article…

“He’s an important player, an extraordinary player and above all he has to understand that he’ll be the future leader of the Juventus dressing room”

According to the Evening Standard, Blues boss Antonio Conte had identified Bonucci as a transfer target for the club along with Van Dijk.

The Italian, regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Europe, has already worked with Conte when he was in the Bianconeri hotseat.

But his hope of reuniting with the 30-year-old has been ruled out by Juventus’ current manager Massimiliano Allegri, who insists Bonucci is a future captain for his side.

He said: “He’s an important player, an extraordinary player and above all he has to understand that he’ll be the future leader of the Juventus dressing room.”

Frank de Boer to Crystal Palace: Premier League now has more former Barcelona players managing than Englishmen

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace’s appointment of Frank de Boer as their new manager and Mauricio Pellegrino getting the Southampton job means 25 per cent of the Premier League’s bosses are former Barcelona players.

Staggeringly this means there are now more ex-Barca men in the top jobs than there are Englishmen.

Before Pellegrino arrived there were three ex-Barcelona players managing – Everton’s Ronald Koeman, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Stoke City’s Mark Hughes.

Now two more names have recently been added to take the list to five – beyond the current number of four English bosses in the Premier League.

The current managers from these shores are Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe, Swansea’s Paul Clement, Leicester’s Craig Shakespeare and Sean Dyche at Burnley.

Brighton manager Chris Hughton was born in London but represented the Republic of Ireland at international level while Hughes and Tony Pulis (both Welsh) add an extra British flavour to the league.

Undoubtedly the situation raises a number of questions about English coaches getting a chance at the highest level.

Or, perhaps, this means the schooling and education gained at Barcelona is of a more impressive standard – even if you have only been at the club for a limited amount of time.

While these questions will linger for plenty of time to come, for now you can scroll through the gallery above to see how the ex-Barca players fared during their time at the Catalan club.
