Saints appoint Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

The 45-year-old has agreed a three-year contract at St Mary’s and will officially join up with the club next week, in time for the start of pre-season training.

Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “I am delighted that after a diligent selection process we have recruited Mauricio Pellegrino as our new First Team Manager.

“We had an impressive list of candidates and went through a comprehensive interview process. Mauricio impressed us throughout with his depth of knowledge, motivation and ability, communicating this in a professional and passionate way.

“He has an excellent understanding of the Southampton Way, and his style of play and aspiration matches the philosophy, culture and ambition of the club.

“We firmly believe Mauricio is the right person to help us take the next steps. He knows our players and believes we have a great squad that with some fine-tuning will be able to deliver continued success.

“Mauricio believes with the quality we have we can play exciting, attacking football, taking the game to our opponents by playing a high-intensity game. He will continue to develop and introduce young players whilst building on the core of experience that we have in the squad.

“During the recruitment process Mauricio quickly became our first choice and, while he had other options, we are delighted he feels that St Mary’s is the right place for him and we believe he is the right fit for us. We are looking forward to working with Mauricio to take the club forward and achieve more success with this team.”

Mauricio Pellegrino said: “I am really happy to become the new coach of Southampton Football Club. The club has a great reputation for having a strong and stable structure, competing in the Premier League and playing attractive football.

“I think my philosophy and the culture of the club will work well together. We have to be a team on and off the pitch; I want to make the supporters proud of the players and to feel part of the game every week. I want to win matches, be successful and develop a team spirit where everyone gives 100 per cent and supports each other.

“I am excited and passionate about what the future holds for us and look forward to meeting the players and beginning our preparation for the new season.”

Liverpool won’t face Premier League action as a result of Van Dijk saga

Show/hide article…

LIVERPOOL have avoided punishment by the Premier League for their ‘illegal approach’ of Virgil van Dijk.

Saints reported the Reds to the league after numerous press reports suggested that Van Dijk was ready to move to Anfield.

No contact had been made by Liverpool to Saints, however, with no bid on the table for the Dutchman.

And, subsequently, Saints, who were seething at the raft of stories linking their player with an exit, went to the Premier League to report Jurgen Klopp’s side for what they felt amounted to an ‘illegal approach’.

Liverpool were forced into a humiliating climb down and, in a statement shortly after Saints took these measures, the Merseysiders apologised and withdrew all interest in the central defender.

Saints were delighted with this outcome and accepted Liverpool’s apology.

But despite the club being satisfied the matter was closed, the Premier League have to continue the process of investigating the complaint.

And the result of a preliminary investigation will mean Liverpool won’t face any action.

It is understood unless new information comes to light there will not be any more progress with the inquiry, effectively allowing Liverpool to avoid a sanction.

Chelsea focus on Van Dijk after Juve close the door on Bonucci move

Show/hide article…

Chelsea’s search for a centre half has suffered another blow after Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri insisted Leonardo Bonucci won’t be leaving the club.

Bonucci is one of the options Conte suggested to the board, along with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.

The Italy international’s relationship with Allegri did appear to be under strain when he was dropped for a Champions League game against Porto last season.

But Allegri claims that furore is now in the past and revealed that the 30-year-old is in line to replace 39-year-old Gianluigi Buffon as captain in the future.

Allegri said: “He’s an important player, an extraordinary player and above all he has to understand that he’ll be the future leader of the Juventus dressing room.”

Chelsea will now concentrate their efforts on buying Van Dijk, who has been valued at £70m by Southampton.

The Dutch international preferred a move to Liverpool, but Southampton are determined not to sell to them after he was allegedly tapped-up by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Blues still hope to complete a club record £61m move for Juventus left back Alex Sandro and agree a fee with Everton for former striker Romelu Lukaku, who has been valued by the Merseyside club at a world record £100m.

Liverpool to escape punishment for allegedly tapping up Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are set to escape punishment for allegedly tapping up Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Saints reported the Reds to the Premier League after numerous reports emerged suggesting the Holland international had decided he wanted to join Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, with no bid made, Southampton took their grievance to the authorities, prompting an immediate apology from Liverpool - accepted by the south-coast side - and a commitment to end their interest in the centre-back.

A preliminary investigation was launched by the Premier League but has stalled as there is insufficient evidence to support Southampton’s claim.

It is understand that unless new information comes to light there will not be any more progress with the inquiry, effectively allowing Liverpool to avoid a sanction.

Liverpool’s players return from their summer breaks to start pre-season next week but striker Danny Ings is already ahead of them having been working on his own at Melwood.

The 24-year-old has made just 11 appearances since his £8million move from Burnley in 2015 after missing the majority of his two seasons at the club with serious knee injuries.

In October 2015, in his first training session with then new manager Jurgen Klopp, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee which ruled him out for seven months.

Almost a year later he sustained ligament damage to his right knee in the EFL Cup tie against Tottenham at Anfield and has not featured since.

Ings, who posted a video on Instagram of him training on his own, has been regularly attending Melwood since the end of the season in a bid to get his fitness up ready for pre-season.

Saints legend Lambert warned over game time

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Rickie Lambert’s future at Cardiff City is in doubt after Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock admitted the striker may struggle for game time.

With Kenneth Zohore and new signing Danny Ward set to be Warnock’s first choice forwards in the Championship next term, Lambert may often be overlooked.

The 35-year-old’s goals fired Saints to double promotions in to the Premier League and helped the club to become an established top-flight side, before he left for boyhood heroes Liverpool in 2014.

“If Zahore’s fit and Ward’s fit, he’s not going to get much (game time) at all, is he? He’s not daft,” said Warnock.

Lambert scored four goals in 13 league starts in 2016-17.

“It’s a catch-22 situation for Rickie - he wants to get fit enough to play enough in the Championship, yet he needs games to get himself fit,” said Warnock.

“We haven’t been able to do that on either front.”

“We’re back in training this week so I’ll be having a chat with Rickie and one or two others over the next week or so,” he added.

“I think it (Lambert’s future) will be sorted over the next fortnight. I can’t see it dragging on into the summer.”

Liverpool to avoid punishment over Virgil van Dijk approach

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are set to escape punishment from the Premier League after allegedly tapping up Virgil van Dijk, Sky sources understand.

Southampton had asked the Premier League to investigate an alleged illegal approach for Van Dijk from Liverpool after reports emerged the player had told Jurgen Klopp he wanted to join the Merseyside club.

The Reds later ended their interest in signing the defender and publicly apologised to Southampton.

A preliminary investigation was launched by the Premier League but has stalled as there is insufficient evidence to support Southampton’s claim.

Unless new information comes to light there will not be any more progress with the inquiry, effectively allowing Liverpool to avoid a sanction.

Strict rules govern transfers, with clubs able to negotiate terms with players only if they are out of contract or once a fee has been agreed with the seller. The laws also govern indirect approaches via an intermediary.

Southampton have consistently said they do not intend to sell Van Dijk, who joined from Celtic for £13m in September 2015 and signed a new six-year contract in 2016.

Liverpool, who were banned in April from signing Academy players from other English clubs for two years after an illegal approach for a 12-year-old attached to Stoke City, have signed several players from the Saints in recent seasons, with Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane and Nathaniel Clyne all heading to Anfield.

Todd ‘mystified’ that Exeter City boss was not considered for Saints job

Show/hide article…

Former Eastleigh manager Chris Todd admitted he was ‘mystified’ that Exeter City boss Paul Tisdale was not considered for the Saints job.

Tisdale, a former Saints player who played 17 times for the club, was linked with the job at St Mary’s in 2010 before Nigel Adkins was appointed.

But the 44-year-old, who led Exeter to the League Two play off final last season, was not in the running to replace Claude Puel at Saints, who appointed Mauricio Pellegrino as the new manager last week.

Todd, who managed the Spitfires for 10 months but was sacked last August, took to social media to announce his surprise that Tisdale was not considered for the Saints role.

He Tweeted: “I know Exeter City would not want to see him leave or let him, but it mystifies me how #PaulTisdale is over looked by @SouthamptonFC.”

And added: “I still think someone will give him a chance at the top one day! #surpriseditsnothappened.”
