Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Spirited Saints beaten by United

Show/hide article…

Spirited Saints produced a stirring second half performance but couldn’t find a goal at St Mary’s yet again as they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United.

Romelu Lukaku scored what proved to be the winner 20 minutes into a first half in which United were in total control.

Saints came out for the second period fired up and creating chances, but they weren’t able to take one as they drew a blank at home for the ninth time in the last ten matches at St Mary’s.

However, they still left with a sense of confidence and to a standing ovation for their efforts.

Before the game started new Saints majority owner Gao Jisheng was introduced to the St Mary’s crowd and was given a warm welcome.

Saints started positively but were given a warning as to United’s counter attacking speed as Dusan Tadic broke but went down in instalments on the edge of the box with referee Craig Pawson refusing his appeals for a free kick.

United moved forward at speed, getting the ball to Marcus Rashford in space on the left. After he had cut across the face of the box and been challenged Henrikh Mkhitaryan hit a low shot from 20 yards that was a fairly simple save for Fraser Forster.

Nathan Redmond had half a chance for Saints on ten minutes as a corner broke to him but he slashed a tricky first time shot well wide.

United were proving to be a class act and hard to contain, but Saints were working so hard to keep them at bay, even though they were increasing being pressed further and further back.

In the end the pressure told as United took the lead on 20 minutes.

United got the ball out to Ashley Young on the left, and he produced several drops of the shoulder to get a yard from Tadic to put in a right footed cross.

Romelu Lukaku was too strong for Wesley Hoedt and from the edge of the six yard box put in a downward header. Forster got down to make a fantastic reaction save but the rebound was pushed to Lukaku whose somewhat scuffed shot bobbled in.

Rashford came close to adding another as he hit a central free kick that beat the wall but went narrowly wide of the post.

Saints were really struggling to impose themselves on the game with United looking both comfortable and very threatening.

From a Saints perspective their attacks were not particularly incisive and so often they were playing in front of United, while every time they tried to push up the counter attack was always on.

Shane Long became the first player in the book as he downed Marouane Fellaini from behind with a mistimed swing of his right boot. Young followed him after ploughing through the back of Tadic.

United threatened again before half time as Oriol Romeu gave the ball away and a quick break saw Lukaku lay a cross deep into the Saints six yard box but the sliding Hoedt got it away.

Saints ended the first period with a rare spell of pressure but when the whistle went they were grateful of the reprieve and the chance to come up with a fresh game plan to try and find a way back into the game.

Saints picked up where they left off with the major change being that they were trying to get the ball out wide and get round the outside rather than playing so much in front of United.

Romeu had a great chance to level the scores six minutes after the restart as Maya Yoshida deflected a corner and it broke to the midfielder just outside the six yard box.

He was arriving late under pressure but would have hoped to have hit the target rather than putting wide.

Redmond did well to work his way inside from the left wing and hit a right footed shot that David De Gea got down to save at his near post as Saints kept their forward momentum rolling.

Long was the next to have a sniff of goal but back peddling he was unable to guide a header on target.

Saints were really bossing the game, showing a new level of intensity, and it was United well and truly on the back foot and happy that referee Pawson deemed there no foul as Long went down on the edge of the area after a tussle with Phil Jones.

Jose Mourinho responded by making a first change on 62 minutes with Ander Herrera replacing Juan Mata.

Despite having to defend, United had plenty of danger up front still and Forster came to the rescue on 66 minutes as Mkhitaryan slipped in Lukaku who got a first time shot on target but the Saints keeper saved with his legs.

Romeu got a header on target from a right wing corner, arrowing it back towards the opposite corner, but Fellaini had retreated and headed it clear before it could threaten the goal.

Redmond worked De Gea with a drilled low shot from distance as Saints kept pressing forward in search of an equaliser.

Pellegrino made an attacking change on 73 minutes, bringing on Manolo Gabbiadini for Steven Davis as the Italian and Long almost played as a strike pair.

Romeu came close again as he got on the end of a sumptuous Saints passing move but his shot across goal from a tight angle drifted wide of the far post.

United could have sealed it moments later as Lukaku got to the left by-line and cut back to Herrera who had time to control and pick his spot from inside the area but fired over the bar.

Pellegrino had one final roll of the dice with seven minutes remaining as Charlie Austin and James Ward-Prowse came on for Long and Cedric.

After a scrappy period Saints knew they had four minutes of added time to try and get something for their efforts.

There was a late change for United as Daley Blind came on for Rashford.

Mourinho was sent to the stands for something he said in the heated final moments, shaking hands with pretty much everyone in the Saints dugout before he departed, but in the end there was to be no further goals as United held on for the win.

Jose Mourinho sent to the stands during Manchester United’s win at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was given his marching orders during Manchester United’s 1-0 win at Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Portuguese boss was dismissed by referee Craig Pawson in the closing stages of the match at St Mary’s, where United won 1-0 thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s first half strike.

The United boss was sent to the stands after encroaching onto the pitch in the dying seconds of the game, as he manically tried to get his players back into position to see off the late threat of the hosts.

After he was dismissed, Mourinho high-fived Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino before leaving the technical area.

When asked why he had been sent off after the match, Mourinho said: “I don’t know, you have to ask the referee.”

With Southampton pressing, Mourinho had taken off Henrikh Mkhitaryan and replaced him with Chris Smalling as United adopted a defensive approach to try and see out the game.

Mourinho was given a touchline ban and fined £58,000 for two separate offences in November last year.

He was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg during a home match with Burnley, and fined for comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor prior to a game at Liverpool.

Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Romelu Lukaku scores only goal

Show/hide article…

Romelu Lukaku created his own piece of Manchester United history - but the travelling fans could get into trouble for singing about him.

Lukaku got the 20th minute winner and has reached eight goals for United quicker than Robin van Persie, Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and even Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But the travelling United fans defied pleas from the club and warnings about their Lukaku chant which has been deemed racist and then chanted: “We’re Man United, we’ll sing what we want.”

It could land them in trouble with the Football Association but they held firm in the second half to get three valuable points in the title race.

Southampton laid siege to the United penalty box at times but could not find a way through with Oriol Romeu going closest to an equaliser.

Jose Mourinho was sent to off in injury time for what looked like something he said to the linesman.

Referee Craig Pawson then came across and sent Mourinho to the stands, although the United boss made a point of high-fiving Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino and a few home supporters before leaving the technical area.

Here are five talking points from St Mary’s…

Manchester United have incredible strength in depth. Paul Pogba is out injured and yet Ander Herrera still didn’t start, coming on as a second half substitute when the game needed shoring up.

Nemanja Matic patrolled the midfield in the first half like he owned it. Marouane Fellaini is so effective alongside him that United’s core looks rock solid.

Southampton put United under severe pressure in the second half, really putting them under the cosh.

But it is a tribute to United’s defiance and determination that they held on for a valuable three points.

Lukaku struck again and has now reached eight goals for Man United quicker than Robin van Persie, Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and even Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Incredibly, Lukaku has scored in seven of his eight games for United and looks an absolute steal at £75m. He certainly will be if they win the title.

It was a crazy summer and, while Neymar’s transfer to PSG was a freak, it did move the goalposts in terms of fees and valuations.

What would Lukaku be worth now? Certainly a lot more than £75m. United’s business in the summer looks outstanding.

How can the same team - and it was the same starting XI - be so good at Crystal Palace last week and be so disappointing at home a week later?

Forget Tottenham’s Tottenham’s Wembley curse, Southampton’s poor form at St Mary’s is even more glaringly obvious.

In fairness, they were much better in the second half but still lost.

Southampton have managed just two wins from their last 12 home games and failed to score in nine of them.

That record is so poor that it must be on their minds - and it clearly is. St Mary’s used to be a fortress but now it’s Southampton’s greatest weakness.

The large contingent of travelling Man United fans broke out into a chorus of THE Romelu Lukaku song they have been asked not to sing.

Then they quickly followed it with: “We’re Man United, we’ll sing what we want.”

Good luck telling football fans what they can and can’t sing. But it may lead to the FA taking action.

The M3 was shut since the early hours of Saturday morning and, as a result, all of the motorway traffic was diverted through tiny country lanes round the back of Winchester.

It must have been a nightmare for the Southampton players and their SUVs as many missed the pre-match team meeting, not good for Manchester United either and it was remarkable that kick off was not delayed.

It was a fantastic effort for all the United fans in the away end to make it.

Southampton’s new Chinese owners were introduced before kick-off and somehow the day went off as planned.

Romelu Lukaku fires Manchester United to tricky win over goal shy Southampton

Show/hide article…

Repeat to fade: Romelu Lukaku strikes again, Manchester United win again, Southampton fail to score again and the away support sing that controversial song about the Belgian again.

That, rather simply, was the story of this otherwise tricky 1-0 victory for Jose Mourinho’s side. Southampton failed to score for the 10th home game in 13, despite otherwise playing quite well, while Lukaku claimed his sixth Premier League goal in six. That was the difference.

It led to the United supporters making a point of singing the Lukaku song that received such condemnation in midweek, and doubling down on it by then singing “we’re Man United, we’ll sing what we want” before then so conspicuously moving on to another much less charged chant in support of the player.

The Belgian is certainly deserving of something like the latter, as he continues to power his and his side’s fine start to the season, even on a day when they probably didn’t deserve it. On the 20th minute at St Mary’s, after what was a bright United start, stand-in left-back Ashley Young sent over a brilliant cross for Lukaku to head at Fraser Forster. The goalkeeper stopped it, but couldn’t stop the forward making it 1-0 and seven goals in all this season. It really is a remarkable start for a player who now looks like he could well be Premier League top scorer this campaign, and one of the most remarkable aspects is the pattern to the goals. Four of them, including that strike in the Super Cup against Real Madrid, involved efforts that were initially saved only to then strike them into the net.

You could look at it both ways, and say it’s either a sign of potential wastage and future misses or just a top striker’s innate instinct for being in the right place, except it’s currently leading to the most singular of outcomes: the undeniability of a goal scored and subsequent wins.

How Southampton would love that kind of simplicity, given how difficult they’ve found mere attacking. It was something so pronounced throughout this match, especially given the slight sense that there was a result here to be taken against the pre-game league leaders.

United had taken command quite quickly, only to gradually cede space and possession - but not many chances. That, however, was more down to Southampton’s forward play rather than the defending of Mourinho’s side.

It was in short difficult to see what home manager Mauricio Pellegrini was trying to do with his team, especially when balls would be pumped up to Shane Long, he would chest it down… and then be forced to come back towards the centre circle and remonstrate with teammates because there was just no support.

In saying that, it was also difficult to see how Oriol Romeu missed just after half-time. Dusan Tadic had made one of Southampton’s isolated runs up the pitch, only for Phil Jones to do well to flick the ball out of play. From the resulting corner, the ball bounced around the box, landing for Romeu in the centre of the six-yard box and with the goal gaping. He put a fair bit wide of the post.

If Southampton struggled to create chances of that quality, they were rather easily taking control of a midfield without Paul Pogba, and that is a concern for Mourinho. That concern was also illustrated when he took off Juan Mata for Ander Herrera.

It saw United quickly make another chance as Henrikh Mkhitaryan teed up Lukaku again, only for Forster to this time get better contact on his stop, but didn’t really plug the hole. Southampton again kept coming, Romeu kept missing these chances that suddenly appeared out of nothing - a header cleared off the line, another skewed wide - and it was about the fourth United game this season that at this point looked as likely to end 1-1 as 4-0.

In the end, it was neither. It was a relatively unconvincing 1-0. Southampton applied some pressure but the tensest moment was when Mourinho got sent off in the final minute for seemingly saying something to the fourth official.

We’ve heard so much of that before too. Repeat to fade.

Manchester United’s win over Southampton was vintage Jose Mourinho

Show/hide article…

Six defenders on the pitch. Time wasting and last-ditch challenges. Jose Mourinho chuntering away to Rui Faria and eventually sent to the stands, that old rueful look on his face.

But at the end of it all three more points, another hurdle cleared. This wasn’t Manchester United at their fluent best, but it was ruthless. Brave, too: wave after wave of Southampton pressure crashed against the away defence in the second half, but the Red Devils stood firm.

It was also vintage Mourinho. Four-goal thrashings are all well and good, but you can’t beat a gritty, backs-against-the-wall away win every now and then to blow the cobwebs away.

United, who remain second on goal difference, will surely be better for this victory in the long run.

“It’s better to win 5-0 than 1-0, but it’s not always possible,” admitted Mourinho.

“Today it wasn’t. We had opportunities in the first half to score the second goal and then the game is different.

“We did for 20 minutes what the majority of the Premier League teams are doing, which is to play defensively with five at the back. We did that for 20 mintues. We had chances to kill the game and score the second goal, but didn’t.

“Then, honestly, I felt Southampton were strong. Their manager was enthusiastic, excited, risking bringing two strikers to play direct, and also in a style that isn’t normally their style.

“So I made the decision to bring on Smalling and the team were solid. Good solidarity, organisation and spirit – and amazing points.”

Mourinho named the same XI that dispatched Everton with ease last weekend, only Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford remaining from the League Cup stroll against Burton.

The latter was heavily involved early on, darting infield to give Henrikh Mkhitaryan a sight of goal and just failing to intercept an uncharacteristically ropey Fraser Forster clearance.

At the other end, Saints struggled to exert much pressure, Shane Long cutting an isolated figure up front against the assembled heft of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly.

It was an invitation for United to push on and they seized it with two hands 19 minutes in, Romelu Lukaku netting his sixth goal in six league games.

Ashley Young was the creator, standing up his man and standing up a sugar-coated cross. Forster reacted quickly enough to keep out Lukaku’s header but could do nothing about the follow-up.

Rashford thumped a free-kick just wide and the only other notable action before the break came on the halfway line, where Marouane Fellaini went down clutching his heel after a challenge from Long. The United players were incensed but referee Craig Pawson was content to leave it at a booking.

Mauricio Pellegrino must have brought his hairdryer with him from Spain because Southampton were a different side after the break.

They tore into United with abandon, Oriol Romeu and Nathan Redmond both going close and crosses raining in from out wide. There were loud appeals for a penalty just before the hour mark when Jones tangled with Long, but Pawson waved play on.

“Our team was getting better,” said a deflated Mauricio Pellegrino.

“We put them under pressure and they realised we were playing well. We played a good game against a team who are hard to control, but you have to be really close to excellence to win these games.”

United created a couple more chances, Lukaku firing at Forster’s legs and substitute Ander Herrera blazing over from 15 yards.

But as Mourinho threw on more bodies to populate the area, it became clear that 1-0 would have to be enough. In the end, despite a couple of minor scares and a bit of touchline confusion involving the Portuguese and the fourth official, it was.

Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Talking points

Show/hide article…

We round up the talking points from Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal midway through the first half as Jose Mourinho’s side kept pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

From Lukaku’s match-winning contribution to Rashford’s return to the flank, here are four talking points from the game.

Another game, another goal for Lukaku. The Belgian struck the winner from close range after overpowering Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt. Lukaku has now scored six times in his first six Premier League appearances for United - equalling Louis Saha’s club record.

The goal was well-taken and his all-round performance was just as impressive. Lukaku’s pace and power caused problems for Southampton from start to finish, and his hold-up play was effective too. Lukaku linked up well with Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and might have had an assist if it wasn’t for Ander Herrera’s wayward finishing.

United signed Lukaku with a view to improving their patchy record against Premier League sides outside of the top seven. Having already netted against West Ham, Swansea, Stoke and Southampton, it appears he is having the desired effect.

This was Manchester United’s fifth clean sheet in six Premier League games and it owed a lot to Phil Jones and Eric Bailly. The duo only played five games together last season, but they have formed a solid partnership at the heart of Jose Mourinho’s defence in the new campaign.

Bailly set the tone with a superb covering tackle to prevent a Southampton counter-attack in the opening minutes, but the best moments belonged to Jones. There was the superb recovery to block a Dusan Tadic cut-back midway through the second half, and soon after that he prevented Shane Long from equalising with a crucial clearing header from Ryan Bertrand’s delivery.

Gareth Southgate raised a few eyebrows when he recently described the 25-year-old as England’s best defender, but this performance certainly strengthened his case. The stats showed he made more clearances than any other player (10) and won all nine of his duels at St Mary’s. Alongside Bailly, he was vital in preserving United’s lead.

Southampton’s struggles in front of goal continued. They have now failed to find the net in eight of their last nine home games in all competitions. This season, they have only scored three times in seven games in all competitions.

It’s a big issue for Mauricio Pellegrino, who started with Shane Long as his lone striker against United. The Irishman did not muster a single shot on target, with substitutes Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin faring no better. Southampton have a relatively kind run of fixtures coming up, but they need to find their shooting boots as soon as possible.

Marcus Rashford enjoyed a rare opportunity to lead the line against Burton Albion in midweek, scoring twice and providing a reminder of what he can offer in the position, but he was back on the left flank as Lukaku took centre stage at St Mary’s.

Rashford didn’t get too many opportunities to attack Southampton, who enjoyed over 60 per cent of the possession, but his pace caused them problems on the counter-attack and he was inches away from scoring with a well-struck free kick in the first half.

His manager will have been even more impressed by his defensive contribution. The 19-year-old diligently tracked back to help out left-back Ashley Young, on one occasion preventing a Bertrand cross with an impressive slide tackle near his own byline. Rashford might be more effective through the middle, but his versatility is valuable to Mourinho.

Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Pellegrino believes Saints were worth a point

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino felt his side deserved at least a point after giving Manchester United a scare at St Mary’s.

Things looked bleak for Saints when Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring at St Mary’s in a comfortable first half for United.

But Saints came out flying in the second period, creating and missing a number of chances to get at least a draw.

In the end another home blank meant they were beaten 1-0, but Pellegrino felt a draw would have been deserved.

“Yes,” said the Saints boss. “The football is efficiency and you have to score goals.

“I don’t like to talk about good luck or bad luck because we have to score goals and we couldn’t, but at the same time I think we play a good game.

“In general we control the game against Man U that is a team that it is really difficult to control even when they are defending because in counter attack they are really good, they have got pace, they are in direct play really strong.

“I think we did 90 per cent of the thing we were working really well and against these type of teams you have to play really well, really close to excellent to win games.”

Pellegrino encouraged by Saints display

Show/hide article…

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute, but Saints were dominant after half-time and the visitors were left hanging on for victory.

Despite the defeat, the boss was happy with how his side equipped themselves against high-flying opponents.

“Football is about efficiency and you have to score goals,” Pellegrino said.

“We couldn’t do that and it’s something we have to improve.

“The good news is that we played really well against one of the biggest teams in the Premier League, and we can look to the future with optimistic feelings.

“Playing this way we will win more games than we lose.

“It was a good game to see where we are against this type of team.”

Saints carved out numerous opportunities, but a precious equaliser eluded Pellegrino’s men.

“Scoring goals is the most difficult thing in modern football,” he added.

“As a manager you can work out how to create chances, how to get into the final third and how to penetrate the defensive system of the opponent, but sometimes it depends on confidence and football things.

“If we keep playing in this way, we will score goals.”

Mauricio Pellegrino believes Southampton controlled game against Man Utd

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino insists his side controlled the game despite their 1-0 defeat by Manchester United.

Saints had 61 per cent of possession at St Mary’s, and piled the pressure on United in the second half, but Romelu Lukaku’s 20th-minute strike won it for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Pellegrino was happy with his side’s efforts, and felt they restricted United all over the pitch.

He told Sky Sports: "For me, I think we controlled the game, and never allowed them to play on the counter-attack, something they are good at with pace in wide areas. Even with the long ball to Lukaku and Fellaini, I think they were under pressure all the time.

"But with this goal, they felt comfortable defending with five defenders, but that’s football too.

“Football is efficiency, you have to score goals. We did well, we played a good game for me, difficult to control against Man Utd in this type of game.”

Pellegrino, whose side have scored just four goals in six games this season, insists Saints must be more aggressive in the final third in future games.

"OK, we have to learn for the future and be more aggressive in the final third. At the same time I’m happy because we did everything that we thought before the game.

"But just in one action, this action [goal] turned the game. It was the difference in the game.

“The offensive way is not just about one player. It’s about all the squad. We can work out how we can create chances in the final third; it’s the most difficult thing in modern football. But we have to push on.”

Five stats to tell your mates from Saturday’s Premier League games

Show/hide article…

What were the standout stats from Saturday’s football?

Chelsea and Manchester City were the biggest winners on a goal-packed day of Premier League action, while there were also victories for Tottenham, Manchester United, Watford, Everton and Liverpool.

Here are five stats you can use to impress your mates!

Harry Kane stole the show in Tottenham’s 3-2 win over West Ham live on Sky Sports, but there was also a landmark goal for Javier Hernandez. The Mexican scored his 40th Premier League goal in the London Stadium showdown when he headed home in the second half. Did you know every one of those goals has come from inside the penalty box?

In the week that Diego Costa departed for Atletico Madrid, Alvaro Morata continued his impressive start to life at Chelsea in style. The Spaniard’s hat-trick helped Antonio Conte’s side to a 4-0 win at the bet365 Stadium. With six goals and two assists, he has now been involved in more goals in his first six Premier League appearances than any other Chelsea player.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal as Manchester United clinched a hard-fought 1-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. It continued a barren run of form for Saints, who have now failed to find the net in eight of their last nine games in all competitions.

Bournemouth found themselves 1-0 up against Everton after Josh King’s goal, but they left Goodison Park with nothing as Oumar Niasse scored twice late on to turn the game on its head. Eddie Howe’s side have now lost 28 points from winning positions since the start of last season - more than any other Premier League side.

Philippe Coutinho may have had his head turned by Barcelona during the summer, but he was back to his best in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Leicester. The Brazilian’s brilliant free-kick was his 16th goal from outside the penalty box - more than any other player since his debut.

Romelu Lukaku stranded in Southampton after squad flew home without him

Show/hide article…

Romelu Lukaku was left behind by his Manchester United teammates following their win over Southampton .

The striker - who scored the only goal of the game - was being drug tested when the rest of the squad left St Mary’s for their flight back to Manchester.

The Belgian was still at the ground more than two hours after full-time before he was escorted out past the waiting fans, and taken to the airport.

Lukaku has now scored eight goals in eight games for his new club since his £75million move from Everton in the summer.

But his arrival has been soured by a new chant from the United support.

The ‘racist’ song has been condemned by both the club and campaign group Kick It Out.

United vowed to take action against any fans caught singing the chant in a strongly-worded statement on Saturday night.

It read: "Manchester United has a zero tolerance stance on offensive chanting and behaviour.

"The club and player have been clear in asking for an end to the chant.

"The club has worked with relevant bodies and supporters groups in trying to eradicate any offensive behaviour and will take action against individuals if this continues. The club in discussion with the police and has asked for CCTV footage.

“We will try to identify those who disrespected the player’s wishes not to sing the song.”
