Manuel Pellegrino is weighing up giving Virgil van Dijk his first start of the season.

The manager told reporters: “We’ll decide [on Friday] but every single week, Virgil is important because he is getting better.”

Otherwise, Southampton have no fresh injury concerns for their toughest test of the season so far as

Anthony Martial will be hoping to keep his place in the starting XI after being named man of the match against Burton, though Marcus Rashford also impressed.

Luke Shaw also featured but is unlikely to face his former team, while the likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo remain sidelined.

Premier League LIVE: Man Utd tackle Southampton at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho is likely to make big changes to his Manchester United side for the trip to Southampton.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial impressed against Burton in midweek and could keep their places, but Romelu Lukaku is likely to start up front.

Star midfielder Paul Pogba is out with a hamstring problem and either Ander Herrera or Marouane Fellaini are likely to take his place.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino is up for the challenge: "When we play against the biggest team in the world, it allows us to draw some conclusions about how we are.

"This is for me the nice challenge and we have to strive for this.

“Playing against Manchester United is one of the most beautiful things. I will live this opportunity, I will live this game, and now we have to try to enjoy this game.”

Line ups: Jose Mourinho names Man Utd team for Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

It was claimed Jose Mourinho was ready to play Anthony Martial against the Saints.

The France international has impressed under Mourinho in limited game time this season.

Martial, 21, has started one Premier League game this time out.

However, in just 122 minutes of domestic action, the winger has netted three goals and chipped in with one assist.

However, Mourinho has opted to stick with Rashford.

The England international is joined by Romelu Lukaku, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata in United’s attack.

The Red Devils have had a fine start to the season, winning four and drawing one of their opening five games.

As for Southampton, Virgil van Dijk is on the bench, with Maya Yoshida keeping his place in the Southampton starting XI.

Man United fans hit out at Mourinho for leaving star man out of Southampton game

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho has taken Manchester United to the top of the Premier League, and registered wins in the opening matches of United’s Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns, but still people aren’t happy.

Plenty of United fans hit out at Mourinho on Saturday when he opted to leave Anthony Martial on the bench for the Premier League clash at Southampton, despite the Frenchman scoring and winning the man of the match award in Saturday’s clash with Burton Albion at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has opted to play Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the attacking positions behind Romelu Lukaku, and although the Portuguese has a tough job cutting his many options down to an XI, people are unhappy that the Frenchman is the one who constantly seems to miss out.

And they took to Twitter to complain about it.

Hopefully he comes on and scores for Mourinho’s sake!

EXCLUSIVE: Nathan Redmond reveals why Virgil van Dijk didn’t join Liverpool

Show/hide article…

That’s according to Nathan Redmond who says the Saints were never under pressure to sell the Dutchman.

Liverpool were desperate to sign the £60m rated centre-back, although cooled their interest amid tapping up accusations.

Van Dijk submitted a transfer request and was forced to train with Southampton’s U23 squad - but still wasn’t allowed to leave.

The Premier League sold its TV rights for £5.2 billion in 2015 and Redmond says the increased cash flow to traditionally smaller clubs like Southampton has strengthened their hand in the transfer market.

“It’s how the Premier League is these days,” Redmond exclusively told Starsport.

“Players had the power a couple of seasons ago.

“But now there’s more money from Sky and there’s more money for Premier League clubs every season.

Southampton v Manchester United team news: Jose Mourinho names unchanged team from 4-0 win over Everton

Show/hide article…

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has opted for the same team that beat Everton 4-0 last weekend despite the lethargic nature of their win.

Ashley Young continues at left-back with Marouane Fellaini starting in place of the injured Paul Pogba.

Marcus Rashford – fresh from his midweek praise after his showing against Burton Albion – will look to be the driving force alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Many thought Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino would hand Virgil van Dijk his first competitive start for the Saints since his summer transfer saga but the defender remains on the bench.

Southampton 0-1 Manchester United: Romelu Lukaku nets winner

Show/hide article…

When the final whistle sounded at St Mary’s, Romelu Lukaku fell to the floor in the centre circle and pounded the turf with his right fist. The match-winner once more, Lukaku was the last off the pitch, too. To him and the rest of Manchester United’s players this felt like a big win.

It was not a vintage performance from United. Far from it. Careless in possession, they were hanging on to their lead for long periods of the second half and Jose Mourinho grew so animated in his determination to urge his players to thwart their opponents that he was sent to the stands in the dying seconds by referee Craig Pawson.

But Lukaku’s predatory strike early in the first half was enough to give them another three points and the Belgian his sixth goal in as many league games since his summer move from Everton. So much for the concerns that his finishing might not be up to scratch.

The United fans massed behind one goal sang his name lustily. They sang his controversial song, too, even though the player and the club have asked them not to. ‘We’ll sing what we want,’ they chanted defiantly.

United were the brighter side in the opening stages and Rashford made life hard for Cedric on the Southampton right with a series of surging runs that forced the full-back to bring him down or tug him back several times in the opening ten minutes.

It was little surprise, then, that United’s opening goal emanated from that flank after 20 minutes. This time, it was Young who tormented Cedric, turning him one way and then the other until he made space to whip the ball into the box with his right foot.

Southampton’s centre backs were close to Lukaku but neither made a respectable attempt to jump with him. Lukaku towered above them both and powered his header in on goal from the edge of the six yard box.

Forster made an excellent one-handed reaction save to push the ball away but he could only divert it right back into the path of the Belgian striker who reacted quicker than the Southampton defenders and knocked it into the net.

It begged the question why exactly Virgil van Dijk was still sitting on the Southampton bench. Whatever the reasons, whether by accident or design, he did move elsewhere in the summer. It seems pointless to keep punishing him for his flirtations. No wonder the Southampton fans gave him a rousing reception when he ran down the touchline to warm up midway through the half.

Lukaku’s goal was his sixth in his first six league games for United, equalling the mark set by Louis Saha in his first six appearances for the club and exceeding the number scored by anyone else, including Eric Cantona, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie. He has made quite an impact.

United were playing well in defence, too. Southampton showed improved confidence after their victory at Crystal Palace last weekend and twice Phil Jones made superb interceptions to thwart danger as the home side threatened early in the second half.

From the second of those interceptions, Southampton gained a corner and when it squirted through a crowd of players, it seemed that Romeu would score with a tap in. But a challenge put him off at the last second and Romeu snatched at his shot and pulled it just wide.

Southampton continued to press for an equaliser. Lemina, who earned rave reviews for his performance at Selhurst Park, began to control central midfield and De Gea had to dive smartly to his right to stop a low shot from Redmond arrowing in at his near post.

Long complained bitterly soon afterwards when he thought Jones pulled him down just outside the area as both men contested a bouncing through ball and a minute later, Long just failed to get on the end of a driven cross after some terrific approach play by his side.

As Southampton pressed, they left themselves exposed at the back and Lukaku could have doubled United’s advantage when Mkhitaryan played him in and his shot was blocked by a defender. At the other end, Romeu’s header from a Tadic corner was headed off the line by Fellaini.

United were on the rack now and with 15 minutes left, Mourinho brought on Smalling in place of Mkhitaryan. Southampton promptly went close again, Romeu dragging a left foot shot wide after he had ghosted into the United area.

Herrera, a second half substitute for Mata, should have put the game beyond doubt ten minutes from time when Lukaku pulled the ball back to him from the byline as he waited 15 yards out. Herrera had time to control the ball and pick his spot but he lifted his shot well over the bar.

United worked hard to try to preserve their lead. When an attack broke down, Mourinho exhorted Lukaku to chase back to pressure the ball and the striker obeyed, earning himself a booking and the praise of his boss in the process.

Not long after that, Mourinho was sent to the stands by Mr Pawson. Before he went, he made a point of shaking hands with every member of the Southampton bench before he was ushered away. Once again, the United manager made sure he had the last laugh.

United edge out Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints, who were beaten in harsh circumstances in the EFL Cup final by the same opponents last season, were again edged out here, as Romelu Lukaku’s first-half goal settled the match.

It was far from what Saints deserved, with little between the sides in the opening half, while the hosts dominated proceedings after the interval.

Unfortunately, though, they could not find a way through, and were left to reflect on a second successive home defeat in the Premier League.

It is one, however, that Saints can no doubt take some significant positives from as they look ahead to next week’s visit to Stoke and the rest of the campaign.

Mauricio Pellegrino named an unchanged XI from the side that beat Crystal Palace 1-0 a week previously, although there were some changes on the bench, as Jérémy Pied, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Charlie Austin were names as subs, with Matt Targett, Jack Stephens and Sofiane Boufal missing out on the squad.

There was little to speak of in terms of chances in the early stages of the game, and Saints would have been pleased with how they were containing the threat of the opposition, but they couldn’t prevent United taking a 20th-minute lead with their first real opportunity of the match.

Ashley Young worked room on the left for a cross, which Lukaku leapt to meet six yards out. Fraser Forster made a sensational save from the forward’s header, but the ball fell fortuitously back to the striker to tap home.

The visitors went close to a second goal in the 27th minute, Marcus Rashford sending a dipping free-kick from 25 yards inches wide of the post, after Maya Yoshida had been judged to have tripped Juan Mata.

Shane Long was the first player into the book, as he caught Marouane Fellaini from behind, ten minutes later, before Nemanja Matić was also cautioned after bringing down Dušan Tadić.

The first half would bring no further action, but the second saw Saints get onto the front foot.

Pellegrino’s side had a big opportunity to equalise just five minutes after the restart, as Tadić’s low, in-swinging corner hit Maya Yoshida and spun into space six yards out. Oriol Romeu reacted quickest, but he could only stretch out and fire wide.

Nathan Redmond then tested David De Gea with a stinging low shot, as he cut onto his right foot on the corner of the area, but the United keeper was equal to the near-post effort.

Long was next to threaten, as he nearly raced onto a ball in behind the United defence, only to go down under the challenge of last man Phil Jones. There was a big appeal from the striker and the home fans for a foul right on the edge of the area, but referee Craig Pawson let play continue.

Steven Davis was then presented with an opening 25 yards out, but, on his lesser-favoured left foot, he fired over.

Saints’ pressure prompted José Mourinho into the first change of the afternoon, as Ander Herrera replaced Juan Mata in the 62nd minute.

The hosts still had to be alert at the other end, as United threatened in the 66th minute, Henrikh Mkhitaryan feeding Lukaku down the inside right, before Forster made an excellent save with his foot.

Still, it was only a temporary respite for the visitors, as Saints went straight back to applying the pressure, with Romeu threatening with a header from a corner, ahead of Redmond testing De Gea again with another low shot.

Antonio Valencia was then booked, as he went in hard on Davis, before the Saints midfielder was withdrawn in a tactical change for Manolo Gabbiadini.

Gabbiadini was quickly involved in a beautiful move that saw him link up with Tadić, who in turn played a brilliant pass in behind for Romeu, whose first-time shot across goal with his left foot flashed just wide of the far post.

Herrera could have settled matters at the other end, as Lukaku got to the byline and cut the ball back to him in space just inside the area, but the midfielder curled his right-footed shot a couple of yards wide.

With eight minutes left, Pellegrino made a double switch, throwing on Austin for Long and James Ward-Prowse for Cédric.

Saints continued to push, but, try as they might, they could not find the goal and the result that their performance merited.
