Fans come to same conclusion as City and Liverpool target is left out of squad

Show/hide article…

Fans on Twitter have all come to the same conclusion after Manchester City and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk was left out of Southampton’s matchday squad to face Huddersfield.

It’s no secret that the Dutch defender wants out of the south coast club after he handed in a transfer request in the summer.

Liverpool even made a public apology to Southampton after their attempts to recruit the player went public.

After earning his way back into the first team this season, van Dijk was dropped when the Saints took on Chelsea last weekend.

Following the 1-0 defeat, boss Mauricio Pellegrino explained why he dropped his star centre-back: “We have won games, lost or drawn with all different players. We don’t depend just on one player. Virgil was outside the other day because I picked the team for this game.”

Regarding the 26-year-old’s future, he added: "Virgil is an important player. There will be a lot of speculation around him.

“When you hear that other clubs want you, it increases confidence. Hopefully, it will make him a better player. I can’t control the market or the information from outside.”

But van Dijk was hooked from Southampton’s squad altogether against Huddersfield, and fans on Twitter believe it means he’s finally off…

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Reds handed boost following Mauricio Pellegrino’s comments

Show/hide article…

Saints defender Van Dijk continues to attract plenty of interest following months of speculation last summer.

Liverpool and City are big fans of the Dutchman while other Premier League clubs are also keen.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says his club do not know anything about City’s apparent interest.

And that could be a major boost to Liverpool’s hopes of finally bringing Van Dijk to Anfield despite their failure to do so during the last transfer window.

Pellegrino said: “I was with [Southampton vice-chairman] Les Reed talking about that but nobody knows about [interest from Man City].

exclusive - Fans need to be patient with seeing Liverpool’s defence improve, says John Barnes

Show/hide article…

Former Liverpool star John Barnes has told talkSPORT Jurgen Klopp will address Liverpool’s defensive problems despite the fact the Reds failed to secure the signing of Virgil Van Dijk last summer.

Speaking to The Two Mikes on Friday night after Liverpool’s crazy draw at Arsenal in which Klopp’s side threw away a two-goal lead, the former winger insisted Liverpool fans need to be patient in seeing their side improve defensively.

Goals from Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah either side of half time put Liverpool 2-0 up before three Arsenal goals in five minutes saw the Gunners sensationally go 3-2 up.

Roberto Firmino’s strike twenty minutes from time spared Liverpool’s blushes, but the draw saw Klopp’s men take their points dropped from winning positions total to eight points this season.

But Barnes, who signed for Liverpool in 1987 from Watford, claimed this is not a statistic worth worrying about.

He said: “Liverpool are not the only side who drops points, everyone drops points. There are points Liverpool should not have won but we did get them.

“We are not very good at the back but we should have been more clinical going forward. We should have had more goals in the first half, we could have been three of four up. We score a lot of goals but if you look at our conversion rate it’s not very good.

“But that is our manager. He has identified the problems and failed to get Virgil Van Dijk in and Naby Keita is coming next year so he does know we have to improve defensively. Hopefully in January or by next season we will have improved.

“But for now we have to play with what we have. We’re fourth at the moment which is good.

“Yes it’s disappointing we threw away the game but we were playing against a very good Arsenal team.

“Both teams are not great and that is not going to change overnight. Klopp has identified that problem and is looking to improve the situation with the players he has got.”

“What Klopp shouldn’t do and fans need to also realise this, is spend money just for the sake of it. What he could have done is spent £60million pounds on players other than Van Dijk and Keita and players he did not want. Klopp has been here for two years and unfortunately people think that is long enough for a manager.

When asked if Liverpool could learn from their Merseyside neighbours Everton, who have conceded just two goals in six games since Sam Allardyce took over as manager, Barnes was quick to dismiss this idea.

He added: “Sam Allardyce is a defensive coach but can he go the other way and make Everton play attractive football that Liverpool play? No he probably won’t. Look at Mourinho, he’s not going to change his philosophy at Manchester United to play like Manchester City. Different coaches stand for different things.

“I think Jurgen Klopp will try and address that defensive problem but unfortunately it did not work out this year and Liverpool fans will probably have to put up with this until the end of the season.”

Liverpool lie fourth after their draw to Arsenal going into the halfway point of the 2017/18 campaign, and Barnes insisted this was a good position for the Reds to be in.

Barnes said: “Realistically Liverpool should not be in the top two, so being fourth is pretty much where we should be.

BBC pundit makes huge claim about Charlie Austin’s kick on Jonas Lossl

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin could have avoided collecting Huddersfiled keeper Jonas Lossl in the face, claims pundit Danny Mills.

The Southampton striker, who scored in Saturday’s Premier League match, may have an anxious wait for the referee’s report after the match if Mills is right.

Lossl committed to a ball in the box with Austin attempting to make a challenge, but the Danish international was first there comfortably.

Still, Austin continued his chase and his boot caught Lossl in the face.

The keeper immediately clutched at his face while Austin protested his innocence.

The England striker was then seen sharing words with Terriers boss David Wagnar, who appeared to take exception to the challenge.

“It’s very naughty,” said Danny Mills on BBC’s Final Score.

"Charlie Austin looks to have ample time to pull out of that one and he just leaves his foot in there knowing he’s going to make contact.

“It’s difficult to say, but I think he knows exactly what he’s doing.”

Austin’s goal was later cancelled out by Laurent Depoitre for 1-1.

Everything you need to know for Leicester vs Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Leicester host Manchester United off the back of an unexpected thrashing by Crystal Palace at home; though the Foxes had won their previous four games having beaten Tottenham and Southampton.

After a shock defeat to Championship promotion hopefuls Bristol City in the League Cup, Mourinho will be determined to beat a newly revived Leicester side under the guidance of former Saints manager Claude Puel.

Mourinho’s side, barring a defeat against rivals Manchester City, have also been in fine form having won five of their previous six in the league.

Follow live coverage of the game here

Claude Puel has Leicester playing with the counter-attacking threat that saw them win the league in 2016, which had slowly dissipated under the management of Craig Shakespeare, utilising the speed of Jamie Vardy to stretch teams and the guile and trickery of wide pair Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray. Wilfred Ndidi will be a big miss for the hosts, having made the most tackles in the league this season (77), after being red carded in Leicester’s loss to Crystal Palace.

The game comes too soon for Leicester pair Matty James and Robert Huth, both of whom are expected back from injury by the New Year.

Mourinho is still without long-term absentee Eric Bailly who is not expected back until March so Victor Lindelof, the summer acquisition from Benfica, will continue to deputise at the heart of United’s defence. Marouane Fellaini continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury. The return of Paul Pogba after serving a three-game suspension will boost United’s midfield, while a return for other star players is likely after a much-changed side struggled in the midweek loss to Bristol City.

The game will be shown on Sky Sports Premier League. Highlights will be available on Match of the Day, at 22:30 on Saturday on BBC1.

Paul Pogba. Sent off in Manchester United’s victory at the Emirates earlier in December for a stamp on Hector Bellerin, the midfielder was beginning to show his qualities having missed a large portion of the season through injury. The French international has managed three goals and five assists in only eight appearances and will be keen to continue his form upon his return to the United midfield.

Jesse Lingard. Since regaining a starting place in United’s midfield, the academy product has been a revelation. Mourinho restored the energetic midfielder to his starting line-up against Watford in November in a central role behind Lukaku. Lingard has scored four and assisted one in five appearances since moving in field.

Southampton 1-1 Huddersfield: Depoitre earns point for Wagner’s men

Show/hide article…

The murmurs started at about midday. A couple of fans outside St Mary’s were quick to point out that they hadn’t seen defender Virgil van Dijk with the rest of the players as they arrived at the ground in their club tracksuits.

Sure enough he did turn up about an hour later with his daughter Nila but not in Saints attire. Confirmation came at 2pm that he had been left out of the matchday squad a week after he was benched at Chelsea.

If Van Dijk does get his wish to leave the south coast for either Manchester City or Liverpool there is no doubt Mauricio Pellegrino will be losing a player of supreme talent.

But the hefty sum of money they will be able to get for him will help Pellegrino add to an attack that is so inconsistent and blunt.

You sensed Charlie Austin’s header in the first half was never going to be enough to keep David Wagner’s side and the 1,581 travelling support from Yorkshire quiet. It wasn’t.

Laurent Depoitre’s equaliser in the 64th minute was enough to leave Saints fans dreading the next two trips to Tottenham and Manchester United.

Part of Van Dijk’s quality is the way he can organise a defence. Southampton’s defence looked anything but when Rajiv van La Parra’s half-hearted attempt at goal dropped to the feet of defender Maya Yoshida in the opening stages. He fluffed his clearance but fortunately Huddersfield couldn’t capitalise.

But if there is one thing Pellegrino would have noted from Huddersfield’s playing style this season is that they don’t let you rest for long.

Right back Florent Hadergjonaj had already offered himself on the right wing a couple of times when his cross was met by the head Van la Parra only for Fraser Forster to make a save.

Wagner bowed his head. His side don’t score many on the road. The 4-1 win at Watford last week was something of an anomaly. Before that trip to Vicarage Road they hadn’t scored an away goal since the opening day of the season when they won 3-0 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The trouble is that when they don’t take their chances there is always a chance that their opponent will.

Saints had done nothing to trouble Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl until they got a corner in the 24th minute. James Ward-Prowse found the head of Wesley Hoedt who flicked on to Austin at the far post and he placed his header past Lossl.

The Saints faithful finally had something other than the future of Van Dijk to talk about.

Not long after that Austin caught Lossl with his right boot when it was clear the goalkeeper had already claimed the ball. The Danish stopper received treatment to stop the blood pouring from his nose. Terriers boss Wagner called it a ‘an ugly and nasty challenge’.

It will be up to the FA Disciplinary Panel to decide whether the striker will face a ban.

Lossl had to be alert soon after to keep out Dusan Tadic from close range.

Wagner had plenty to think about at half-time. He would have thought his side were going to concede again when Nathan Redmond sprinted down the left side before cutting the ball across only for Austin to drag his shot hopelessly wide.

It was the signal Wagner needed. On he sent Tommy Smith and Joe Lolley. Three minutes later and Huddersfield were level after a superb move that started in their own half. Smith helped the ball into the Saints six-yard area where Depoitre was completely unmarked and left Forster rooted to his line as the forward’s header nestled in the back of the net. What must Van Dijk have been thinking watching from one of the executive boxes.

Austin had another chance to redeem himself when Lossl played a short ball out which the striker sent back in his direction only for the goalkeeper to make a comfortable stop.

Austin seemed to overexert himself and tweak a hamstring when taking the shot and went down. When he did get up he was replaced by Manolo Gabbiadini. Pellegrino said Austin will miss at least two weeks of action.

Saints fans started drifting towards the exit at St Mary’s with two minutes to go and nearly missed a grandstand ending. Four minutes of added time had been announced when Yoshida directed a header past Lossl only for the post to deny him.

The final whistle went meaning Pellegrino’s side have won just once in their last ten Premier League games.

They miss Van Dijk - that is clear to see. Asked whether he had played his last game at St Mary’s, Pellegrino said: ‘I don’t know. We will have to wait but I will repeat that there will be a lot of speculation around him and we have to wait.’

Austin scores again but Saints held to draw

Show/hide article…

A typical poacher’s effort from the in-form striker broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, but an uncharacteristic second-half miss let the visitors off the hook.

Town took full advantage of the reprieve by drawing level through Laurent Depoitre soon after the hour mark, before Saints lost Austin to injury as they chased a winner.

Mauricio Pellegrino made five changes to his side, including handing a first appearance of his managerial reign to Matt Targett at left-back.

With both Saints’ regular full backs, Cédric and Ryan Bertrand, sidelined by injury, Pellegrino reverted to a back four with Jack Stephens on the right.

There were also recalls for Steven Davis, Mario Lemina, Dušan Tadić and Austin, who was hoping to continue his excellent recent form in front of goal.

Huddersfield were coming into the game on the back of an eye-catching 4-1 victory at Watford, and there was evidently a spring in the step of the visitors early on.

Twice the Terriers attacked with purpose down the right, as Collin Quaner crossed low for Rajiv van La Parra, whose scuffed shot deflected into the arms of Fraser Forster.

Then Tom Ince repeated the trick in finding space near the corner of the penalty area and picked out Aaron Mooy, who took a touch and drove his shot towards the bottom corner only to find Davis in the right place to make an important block.

There was no denying Huddersfield were on top. After a free kick from Mooy was not properly cleared, Christopher Schindler met a right-wing cross with a thumping header brilliantly kept out by Forster high to his left.

It was not until midway through the first half that Saints really imposed themselves as an attacking threat, as Targett raided down the left and delivered a teasing cross nervously punched clear by Jonas Lössl.

From the same attack the hosts won a corner, from which Austin poached his fifth goal in as many starts.

It was simple stuff. James Ward-Prowse whipped in the set-piece, Wesley Hoedt flicked on and Austin, left all alone inside the six-yard box, stooped to nod in the opener.

Saints had established control of the game, but defender Schindler threatened to wrestle away their advantage when he won another header in the box, this time sending it wide of the post with Forster a spectator.

The Saints stopper was called into action when he rushed from his goal to clear a long ball, prompting Stephens to step in and carry the loose ball deep into Huddersfield territory.

It was terrific play from the defender, who just put too much on his through pass to Austin.

As Lössl raced out to collect, he got there just in front of the striker and suffered a boot in the face for his troubles as Austin tried to nick the ball away.

It was an incident that prompted a bloody nose and an extended period of treatment for the Dane, while the goalscorer was quick to apologise and wave on the physio.

It was becoming a very watchable game, as Lemina embarked on a driving run into the Town half and released Nathan Redmond with a clever reverse pass.

Redmond crossed low for Tadić, whose shot was saved at point-blank range by Lössl, before Davis’ follow-up deflected wide, while Austin’s attempt to catch the keeper out of his goal soon after was denied as Lössl hastily backpedalled to gather.

Hoedt was the first player to go into the book, rather unfortunately, after clashing heels with Tom Ince early in the second half.

Huddersfield kept believing there was a goal in the game for them, but with Saints leading they became a dangerous proposition on the counter-attack.

Lemina threatened to expose Town with a solo run but was crowded out before he could release the ball, while Redmond tore through the defence from another breakaway.

The winger did everything right as he lured in the last man and squared it for Austin, who had the chance to potentially put the game to bed as his first touch sat up to be hit, but he dragged his shot inches wide as all of St Mary’s waited for the net to bulge.

It was a lucky escape for Huddersfield, who made the most of it by drawing level on 64 minutes.

The equaliser arrived just three minutes after David Wagner made a double substitution, introducing Tommy Smith and Joe Lolley.

It was Smith who made an immediate impact, finding space on the right to pick out Depoitre, who just had to hit the target from six yards and made no mistake with a downward header past the helpless Forster.

Saints still had plenty of time to get their noses back in front. Pellegrino made a double change of his own, as Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Sofiane Boufal entered the fray at the expense of Davis and Tadić.

His third and final substitution was enforced. The ever-dangerous Austin was alive again when Lössl kicked the ball straight to him, and returned it with interest with an explosive shot beaten away by the keeper from 20 yards.

But in doing so Austin pulled up with a muscle injury and was unable to continue, prompting Manolo Gabbiadini to take his place for the final 11 minutes with Saints pressing.

With four added minutes signalled, Targett delivered a free kick met by a powerful header from Maya Yoshida that looked destined to find the bottom corner, only to strike the foot of the post and bounce back into play as Huddersfield held on for a point.

Huddersfield earn a point as Southampton lose Charlie Austin to injury

Show/hide article…

Southampton extended their winless to six this afternoon against Huddersfield Town, and with Wembley on Boxing Day and Old Trafford next Saturday, they are facing the prospect of ending 2017 in the worst possible way.

This 1-1 draw at home to David Wagner’s side, in which they took the lead and had chances to go 2-0 up, is precisely the sort of game that any serious side should be winning. But they did not and there are now serious questions about Mauricio Pellegrino’s management of the club. They have only won four league games all season.

It is likely to get worse, not least because they will likely go to Tottenham and Manchester United without Charlie Austin, their only player currently capable of putting the ball in the net. He nodded in Saints’ only goal in the first half. But he limped off with a hamstring injury and before then was involved in an incident with Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. One of those incidents, if not both, is likely to keep him out next week.

Soon after scoring his goal, Austin chased onto a through pass from Jack Stephens. Lossl raced out and beat him to it, and Austin did little to avoid a collision. His right boot made contact with Lossl’s face, and the Danish goalkeeper writhed in pain and required lengthy treatment. Lee Probert appeared to see the incident and gave nothing.

The question for the Football Association will now be whether the referee saw it for what it was. And if so, whether this was an act of serious foul play worthy of a three-match ban. Such a ban would keep him out of Saints’ crucial games at Tottenham and Manchester United, as well as the home game with Crystal Palace on 2 January. The FA will review the footage tomorrow, on Christmas Eve.

But it is quite possible that their decision will not matter. With 12 minutes left here, Austin raced onto a through-ball and, in unleashing a powerful shot at Lossl, injured his hamstring. He went down and was helped off the pitch, to the jeers of the travelling Huddersfield fans. The scan could well keep Austin out for longer than any three-game suspension.

If Austin is out – whether injured or banned - then Saints will certainly miss him. He was their only real attacking threat in this fairly forgettable game. Mauricio Pellegrino has drilled this team rigorously, and they keep their shape well, but they struggle to create chances. They came into this game with just two points from their last five games – now three from six - and confidence was clearly low among fans and players.

Saints, in fact, were barely in the first 20 minutes of this game. They were passive and second to everything. When the took the lead it came out of nowhere. James Ward-Prowse whipped in a corner from the right, Wesley Hoedt got up to win the first header and Austin stooped at the far post to nod the ball in. That was his fifth goal in seven and for a team like this, that creates so little, a player who comes alive in the box is absolutely invaluable.

Southampton did improve with the lead, but not by much. Lossl saved bravely from Dusan Tadic from close range and then again from an Austin chip after he had come too far off his line and lost out to Tadic.

The second half continued along similar lines and, right on the hour mark, Austin had a chance to put the game away. Redmond burst down the left, through the Huddersfield defence. He selflessly squared to Austin, who controlled the ball but sliced his shot wide.

Four minutes later, Saints were made to pay. Huddersfield had faded in the game after their strong start, in which Christopher Schindler had a header tipped onto the bar by Fraser Forster. But David Wagner knew his team needed more energy, and made a double change to turn the game. Tommy Smith injected more pace at right wing-back and with his first action, he burst down the right and whipped in a cross which Laurent Depoitre was free to head in.

It was what Huddersfield deserved on the balance of play. This must be the most limited squad in the Premier League and yet they continue to cause problems for far richer opponents. They needed a touch of luck – Austin’s miss, and Maya Yoshida heading against the post in the last minute – but they are still able to make the most of it.

Southampton 1 Huddersfield 1: Charlie Austin has mixed afternoon as pressure grows on Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin scored his fifth goal in as many starts but Mauricio Pellegrino’s side failed to win for a sixth game in a row, heaping pressure on the Argentinian ahead of trips to Spurs and Manchester United.

Ominously for them, Virgil Van Dijk was not in the squad as speculation again mounts about his imminent exit for the club ahead of the reopening of the transfer window.

Austin’s goal briefly raised spirits inside an impatient and distinctly unfestive home crowd but the striker was very lucky not to have been sent-off for a cynical late kick on Terriers’ goalkeeper Jonas Lossl which left him with a cut across the nose.

The Terriers are feeling a little more festive. This week, centre back Mathias Zanka offered to buy a pint for each supporter who made the 472-mile round-trip to the South Coast, announcing the decision on social media with the caption “Zanka Claus is coming to town.”

That will set him back around £8,000 but spirits are high with the club having enjoyed an excellent first half to the season and a return of 22 points.

Southampton 1-1 Huddersfield: Laurent Depoitre cancels out Charlie Austin’s opener

Show/hide article…

Laurent Depoitre’s second-half header for Huddersfield extended Southampton’s winless run to six matches in a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

Charlie Austin gave Southampton the lead from close range (24). However, he could have been sent off shortly afterwards for kicking the visitor’s goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in the nose.

Austin missed a wonderful chance to put the hosts 2-0 up on the hour-mark and was made to pay for it as Depoitre headed in Huddersfield’s equaliser (64).

The draw means Huddersfield go into 11th place and level on 22 points with Watford. Brighton’s 1-0 victory means Southampton drop down to 13th.

Huddersfield started brightly and would have taken the lead in the 14th minute if not for Forster’s heroics. Florent Hadergjonaj’s threatening cross was met by Christopher Schindler, forcing Forster into tipping the ball over the bar.

But even with the visitors pushing for the opener, Southampton took the lead through Austin. James Ward-Prowse’s corner was nodded on by Wesley Hoedt into the path of the unmarked poacher, who tucked home from point-blank range.

The scrappy contest took a controversial turn in the 32nd minute as Austin left a foot in on Jonas Lossl’s nose when they both chased for a loose ball. However, five minutes later, the Swiss goalkeeper continued the game and made a brave stop from close range to deny Tadic Southampton’s second.

The first great chance in the second half fell to Austin. On the counter-attack, Redmond squared the ball to the 28-year-old who, with just the goalkeeper to beat, dragged his shot wide of the post.

And the former QPR striker was made to rue his chance as Huddersfield punished the Saints four minutes later. Substitute Tommy Smith burst down the right flank and crossed in for Depoitre, who positioned himself between Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens, to nod in a deserved equaliser.

Austin’s eventful day came to an end when he limped off with a hamstring injury following his dangerous strike on goal that Lossl parried away.

Yoshida almost got the winner for Southampton in injury time, but his free header from Ward-Prowse’s corner came off the post before bouncing out off Lossl to mark a frustrating afternoon for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

Southampton have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games (D4 L5) and are winless in their last six (D3 L3).

Huddersfield have picked up four points from their last two away games in the Premier League, as many as they collected in their first eight in the competition.

Charlie Austin has had a hand in seven goals in eight previous league appearances against Huddersfield (five goals, two assists).

Austin has scored five goals in his last five Premier League starts for Southampton.

Laurent Depoitre has scored three goals in his last three Premier League games, more than in his previous 13 combined (2).

Lossl endured an eventful afternoon after being kicked in the nose by Austin, but he also produced a string of fine saves to keep Huddersfield in the game on many occasions.

After bravely playing on following the collision with Austin, he denied Tadic and Yoshida from scoring two of the game’s clear-cut opportunities.

David Wagner: The second half was good as well in my point of view. We created lots of good opportunities and scored a wonderful goal as well. It was very deserved point for us that we can take out of this game.

As ugly as this incident [Lossl and Austin] was as ugly now he looks Merry Christmas to him.

His wife will not be very happy when she meets him tonight but he looks good, he looks OK. He has to recover like the whole group and we will be ready for the Boxing Day game at home at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Mauricio Pellegrino: Today was a flat game. A lot of challenges and balls in the air. In this physical battle, Huddersfield is possibly a bit stronger than us. We had to put the ball on the floor but we couldn’t too much. The big picture today is that we were really close to scoring the second and we couldn’t.

"Austin proves he’s clinical, lovely little stooped header. But he’s a lucky lad that he stays on the pitch. The through-ball, he chases it, the 'keeper’s come out. Austin’s two yards away from the 'keeper, then he sticks out just the toe of his boot, and he’s left the boot there. I think the lad’s broken his nose.

“Austin scores the goal, then he’s got a hamstring and it looks a bad one. He’s going to be out for a while. And then defensively they’re still vulnerable. And Southampton are in trouble, they’re only three points off safety.”

Southampton travel to north London to face Tottenham, live on Sky Sports Premier League, on Boxing Day. Huddersfield, meanwhile, take on strugglers Stoke at 3pm on the same day.

Southampton vs. Huddersfield Town - Football Match Report - December 23, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin could face a suspension after his challenge on Jonas Lossl left the Danish goalkeeper with a blood-soaked face as Southampton drew 1-1 with Huddersfield at St Mary’s.

Austin fired Saints into the lead but later avoided sanction despite catching Huddersfield keeper Lossl in the nose in a bad-tempered south coast affair.

The striker could face retrospective punishment from the Football Association for his actions, with a three-match ban a possibility, while Lossl managed to play on undeterred after lengthy treatment.

Austin’s fifth strike in five starts was cancelled out by Laurent Depoitre’s third goal in as many games however, as the Terriers fought back for a share of the spoils.

Saints frontman Austin later hobbled off with a leg issue as injury cut short his mixed afternoon.

The draw left Southampton with just one win in 10 Premier League encounters, maintaining pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

The Saints boss will also be forced to field further enquiries about defender Virgil van Dijk, omitted entirely from the match squad and still a January transfer target for Liverpool and Manchester City.

Huddersfield defender Mathias “Zanka” Jorgensen had pledged to buy every travelling Terriers fan a pint for making the south coast trip.

And the 1,581 hardy Huddersfield souls on hand at St Mary’s would have headed north satisfied with a hard-fought point, and an expectant thirst.

Austin relished the chance to wind up the Huddersfield fans after handing Saints the lead, rushing towards the visiting supporters and cupping his ear in jest.

He then poured fuel on that fire when leaving his foot in, whether intentionally or not, on visiting goalkeeper Lossl when chasing Jack Stephens’ through-ball.

Lossl wound up with blood pouring from a cut across his nose, and Austin, to the surprise of many, avoided any censure from referee Lee Probert.

Austin’s goal was well worked, the finisher nodding in at the far post after Wesley Hoedt smartly flicked on a corner.

But his subsequent celebration and then the flash point with Lossl doubtless soured his first-half’s work.

The former QPR striker ought to have doubled his tally in the second half’s first meaningful exchange but blazed wide when clean through.

Nathan Redmond stood up Jorgensen and raced on before flicking to the unmarked Austin, who fired his shot just the wrong side of the post.

Huddersfield quickly made Saints pay for that profligacy, as Depoitre headed home Tommy Smith’s pinpoint cross to level the tie.

Lossl managed to beat away a fierce Austin drive, but the striker wound up crumpled in a heap and hobbled off with a suspected leg problem.

Maya Yoshida hit the post with a late header, but Saints came up short in another underwhelming showing.
