Bertrand and Cédric unavailable for Huddersfield

Show/hide article…

The pair both picked up injuries following last weekend’s defeat to Chelsea.

Cédric was withdrawn prematurely from the action at Stamford Bridge after an early collision with the advertising boards behind the goal while Bertrand has reported an issue with his hamstring.

Pellegrino said: "Both are unavailable to play tomorrow and they are the only two players that are not ready.

"Cédric hurt his ankle after his collision and Bertrand has a problem with his hamstring. Maybe Ryan will be back for the festive period, but Cédric maybe will need a little longer.

“We have another three difficult games coming up in quick succession and we will need everyone to be fresh. We have a big enough squad to change players and still be competitive.”

Premier League announce TV match schedule for February

Show/hide article…

The Premier League has announced its TV match schedule for February with London-based trio Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea dominating the coverage.

Sky will broadcast 11 matches while BT Sport will show just four during another busy month of top flight action.

There are plenty of big clashes at the top of the table to look forward to with Tottenham hosting north London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea travelling to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

It promises to be a tough month for Arsenal who will also host a resurgent Everton and league leaders Manchester City either side of their trip to Wembley.

Aside from their showdown with United, Anotnio Conte’s Chelsea will feature twice on Monday Night Football with games against Watford and West Brom.

There is little to look forward to for fans of Swansea, Brighton and West Ham, however, with none of their games selected to be shown live.

Certain games, such as Crystal Palace’s meeting with Tottenham, could be moved depending on the progression of teams in domestic cup competitions.

Southampton vs Huddersfield: Team news, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Southampton’s home clash with Huddersfield at St Mary’s at 3.00pm on Saturday.

Southampton will be without full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Huddersfield.

England left-back Bertrand has a hamstring problem, while Portugal international Soares has sustained an ankle injury.

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino has no other selection issues but has suggested he will rotate his squad during a busy festive schedule, which could mean a recall for defender Virgil van Dijk, who was left on the bench against Chelsea last weekend.

Huddersfield will be without Elias Kachunga and Jonathan Hogg for their Premier League game at Southampton.

Forward Kachunga has been ruled out for 10-12 weeks after sustaining a knee injury in last week’s win at Watford, while Hogg serves a one-game ban following his dismissal at Vicarage Road.

Defender Chris Lowe will be included in the squad despite sustaining a foot injury last week, but Michael Hefele has had a setback in his recovery from an Achilles injury. Philip Billing (ankle) and Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) are still out.

Southampton have won their last three home matches against Huddersfield in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and conceding just once.

Huddersfield’s last top-flight visit to Southampton is also the last time they won away from home against the Saints, winning 2-1 at the Dell in September 1971.

Saints have won just one of their last nine Premier League games (D3 L5) and are winless in their last five (D2 L3).

Southampton have lost just one of their last 26 home Premier League games against newly promoted sides (W17 D8), losing 0-1 against Cardiff in April 2014.

Huddersfield’s 4-1 win at Watford last weekend ended a run of seven consecutive away Premier League games without a goal (D1 L6). Both of their away victories in the Premier League have been by a three-goal margin (3-0 vs Crystal Palace).

Southampton have won 10 and lost none of their last 11 home league games against sides since from Yorkshire losing 2-1 to Sheffield United in February 2009.

13% of Huddersfield’s Premier League goals this season have been own goals by the opposition (2/16); the highest such ratio in the division.

Saints haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine Premier League games – the joint-longest current run in the competition, along with Newcastle.

Charlie Austin has had a hand in six goals in seven previous league appearances against the Terriers (four goals, two assists).

Laurent Depoitre has scored two goals and provided an assist in his last two Premier League games – this after netting just twice in his first 13 in the competition.

Scout Selection: Austin leads the line for best XI

Show/hide article…

Fantasy Premier League managers are turning to midfielders as their main source of goals, although striker Charlie Austin (£6.2m) has the form to correct the balance.

The Southampton forward has four goals from four starts ahead of Saturday’s match with Huddersfield Town.

Austin makes the cut as a lone frontman, as the select XI for Gameweek 19 lines up in a 4-5-1 formation.

The West Ham United goalkeeper heads into a home match with Newcastle United on the back of three successive clean sheets. Adrian has saved 84.6% of his shots faced, placing third behind FPL favourites Nick Pope (£4.8m and 86.7%) and David De Gea (£5.9m and 85.0%).

Now ranked second in the overall defender standings behind Antonio Valencia (£6.9m), Alonso has produced a goal and an assist in his previous two Gameweeks. With 34 shots over the season, 14 more than any other defender, he promises another double-figure score at Everton on Saturday.

The Manchester City centre-back is tied with Alonso on four goals as another defender who can contribute attacking points to accompany clean sheet returns. He faces an AFC Bournemouth attack who have recorded just four big chances in away matches, fewer than any other side.

The defender’s recent return to the Manchester United starting line-up is a major boost ahead of their visit to Leicester City. Jones has completed 90 minutes on 11 occasions, keeping nine clean sheets in those matches.

Returning to the side as cover for the injured Mamadou Sakho (£4.8m), Dann is crucial to a much-improved Crystal Palace defence. The Eagles travel to Swansea City having conceded just six big chances over the last six Gameweeks. Only Chelsea (four) have allowed fewer.

The top transfer target ahead of this evening’s 6.45 pm GMT deadline, Sterling has scored seven goals at home, more than any other player. He also faces AFC Bournemouth having netted in each of his four previous appearances against them, scoring six goals. He claims our Gameweek captaincy.

We opt for two members of Man City’s midfield by drafting in the Belgian. De Bruyne has produced five goals in the last eight Gameweeks, providing double-figure hauls in three of his last four matches at the Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder will be expected to return to the United starting line-up at Leicester as he bids to maintain a scoring rate of 7.0 points per match. Pogba has contributed three goals and seven assists from just eight starts.

With a goal or an assist in nine of his previous 10 appearances, it is impossible to overlook Salah, even when faced with a testing trip to Arsenal. He arrives at Emirates Stadium having scored eight goals from 14 shots on target away from home, more than any other player on both counts.

The absence of Christian Benteke (£7.6m) through suspension will put the onus on Zaha to provide a cutting edge for the trip to Swansea. Used as part of a front two for Palace, Zaha has produced a goal or an assist in each of his last three Gameweek outings.

Austin will be expected to return to the Southampton teamsheet for the visit of Huddersfield Town, having made a 29-minute appearance from the bench at Chelsea. He has fired eight shots on target over the previous four Gameweeks, a tally bettered only by Harry Kane (£12.8m and nine).

Pellegrino: Let’s show our ambition

Show/hide article…

Saints welcome the Terriers to St Mary’s tomorrow, as they look to get back to winning ways ahead of Christmas.

Pellegrino’s side are on a run of five games without victory, but they ran Chelsea close at Stamford Bridge last weekend and the manager wants to see them build on that against Huddersfield.

“We have to play with ambition, to try to show our style,” said the boss, who will be without injured full-backs Cédric and Ryan Bertrand for the game.

"It doesn’t matter the symptoms on the pitch, because sometimes you can concede, you can score, but you have to play with ambition – if you are winning, to try to score the second one. If you are drawing, to try to win until the end. If you are losing, to fight until the end, and these are the messages for my players, and also to have a clear idea of what they have to do on the pitch, to be focused 100 per cent on their job.

"It’s important to try to show our best face and try to win this game, and also to perform well, to play well – to deserve to win.

"We want to change our last home game, against Leicester. I feel we have got a nice opportunity now, everybody is conscious about what we have to do.

“It’s a difficult side, because Huddersfield are performing well, they are really competitive, but I think we are ready to play a good game.”

Mauricio Pellegrino unaware of Man City interest in Virgil Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says he is unaware of any interest from Manchester City in Virgil van Dijk.

Sky Sports News understands that City have opened discussions with Southampton about the defender but speaking ahead of Saturday’s game against Huddersfield, Pellegrino was keen to play down the link.

He said: "I don’t think so, This morning I was with Les (Reed, Southampton vice-chairman) talking about that but nobody knows about that.

"I know Virgil is an important player, there will be a lot of speculation around him like with other players because we have got a lot of important players in the squad.

"It is normal, I can’t control this and I don’t want to talk too much about that. Sorry, but tomorrow we have got an important game and the most important thing is these three points.

“I want him, there is a lot of speculation but I can’t talk about that. I can’t control information from outside.”

It is not the first time that Van Dijk has attracted interest from a top club. The Netherlands international was the subject of a controversial transfer wrangle in June when Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology for an improper approach and Pellegrino believes any renewed outside interest could make Van Dijk an even better player.

He added: “When I was a player I didn’t have the same name as Virgil in the press but when you hear that another club wants you it increases your confidence and instead of being out mentally I think it increases the confidence of the player.”

Rumours about Van Dijk’s future were fuelled when he was left on the bench for last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea but Pellegrino insists it was all about squad rotation.

“Virgil is like everybody else,” said Pellegrino. "He can be on the bench because I rotate all of the players when you have got a lot of games in a row like we did last week.

“This week we have another three games and I think we will need all of them fresh and I think we have got enough in the squad to change some players.”
