Chelsea 4-2 Southampton: Puel urges big win

Show/hide article…

Saints boss Claude Puel admitted his side need to turn performances into results against the Premier League’s big guns before the end of the season.

Defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night added to a record of woe against the top sides.

Saints have failed to register a league win this season against the likely final top six of Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal in nine attempts.

Saints still have to play Liverpool, United and Arsenal before the end of the season, with Puel desperate to turn that record around.

“Yeah. It’s really important now to have good results against this team,” said Puel after the 4-2 loss to the title chasing Blues.

“Against Manchester City for example it was not enough for us. It was a good defensive with a strong defensive unit but without the good quality with the ball.

“This was a very interesting game for us and for Chelsea also.

“It was I think normally a draw at half time and second half was difficult because we tried to come back and with space and good counter attack they stayed dangerous and with these players in counter attack it’s difficult.

“The two free kicks for us it’s not normal for me because we need to improve on this situation because it’s a shame with the quality of this game to concede four goals.”

Saints did put in a decent display at the Bridge, in contrast to the 3-0 loss to Manchester City in their previous match.

The biggest frustration for Puel was that many of Saints’ problems were of their own making, as they conceded some sloppy goals.

On top of that they conceded at bad times, just after the start of both halves and moments before half time, which made an already difficult task immeasurably harder.

“I think it was for us a better performance than against Manchester City for example,” reflected Puel.

“In the final it’s a shame because we can do a good game with quality, intensity, reason, against a great opponent, but the scenario was bad because we conceded the goals in bad moments.

“The first after just five minutes of time and the second just before half time and the third when we are starting the second half. This made the difference.

“The details made the difference because it’s important now to find the good clinical and I think the good concentration about our free kicks also because we conceded this goal and we can prevent them.

“Of course we played against a great team and two great players like Eden Hazard and Diego Costa. They played very well and made the difference.”

Ronnie Ekelund on forging one of the great double acts

Show/hide article…

Ronnie Ekelund made his debut for Brondby aged 15, is one of only four Danes to play for Barcelona and is regarded by Matthew Le Tissier as the best team-mate of his career.

The pair played just 17 Premier League games together at Southampton as Alan Ball coaxed the mercurial Channel Islander into the form of his life, but Ekelund also flourished under the World Cup-winner, who died 10 years ago this week.

‘From day one when I met Alan Ball, I felt that I clicked with him as a manager and what he was trying to do with the team. I was a piece of that puzzle and fitted it nicely,’ Ekelund said.

‘Alan had a good feeling for when to step it up a little bit more in practices and when to back off when the guys had been working hard and the schedule was tough. I felt he had a very good sense of that.

’He had a little bit of something going on with the man management with each player and motivating the whole team.

‘He was good at the social aspect of things to get everybody on the same page and be more cohesive as a team.’ During Ball’s 18-months at The Dell, an electric Le Tissier scored 45 goals in 65 games. The message was simple: pass to Le Tissier. Ekelund, who chipped in with five Premier League goals, recalls his time there fondly.

‘Le Tiss and I were on the same page and Alan recognised that very early on. He kind of went to the team, “Get the ball to Le Tiss and Ronnie”. And we were trying to find those pockets and create the plays from there.

‘He was one of the first managers at that level that recognised that, at least verbally said that out loud in meetings.

'I grew with confidence and I’m sure Le Tiss did as well.’ The received wisdom is that Ekelund joined Southampton after a chance meeting between Ball and Johan Cruyff in August 1994 in a hotel in Doorwerth, Holland.

The pair knew each other from their NASL days and the story goes that Cruyff asked Ball if he needed anything over dinner. ‘A left-sided midfielder,’ came the reply. The next morning Ekelund was waiting in the lobby to join Southampton on loan. But Ekelund insists there was a little more to it.

‘I had asked to look at exploring moving on from Barcelona - I was probably thinking more in the Spanish league at the time - but I was presented with the opportunity at Southampton and asked whether that was something I wanted to explore. I said yes.

’It so happened that the Barcelona team was moving on to the next stage of the pre-season and I could choose to check out Southampton and Alan Ball could have a look at me.

‘I really enjoyed what I saw and clicked with both Alan Ball and Le Tissier, but we had a great team.’ Ekelund should know. He played alongside some of the world’s best: Peter Schmeichel was at Danish champions Brondby, while there was an embarrassment of riches at Johan Cruyff’s all-conquering Dream Team.

With Ekelund’s idol Michael Laudrup in his prime, Romario, Hristo Stoichkov, Ronald Koeman and Richard Witschge put Ekelund, just 19 when he joined the Catalan giants in 1992, down the pecking order.

There was, as Ekelund puts it, ‘half the Spanish national team’ there too, with Guillermo Amor, Pep Guardiola, Jose Mari Bakero, Andoni Goikoetxea and Txiki Begiristain also among his team-mates.

Frustrated by a three-foreigner rule which led to a solitary La Liga appearance (he replaced Bakero against Racing Santander in March 1994), Ekelund was training with the best, but playing for the club’s B side.

‘Practices were so much at a higher level. You had half the Spanish national team and all these superstars, and then the 19-year-old kid.’

‘It was incredible. Playing certain possession games in Barcelona you are on a team and you lost the ball. And they were so good that you didn’t see it for 20 minutes. They just didn’t give it away!’

Capped at every level by Denmark up to Under 21s, Ekelund joined Barcelona after the 1992 Olympics. Denmark didn’t make it out of their group (‘We weren’t very successful, it was too hot for the vikings to go into Spain and play!’, he said), but it was a good tournament for Ekelund individually.

Barcelona had been tracking him at Brondby and he moved straight from Denmark’s base in Zaragoza to the Catalan club. As Ekelund was settling in, Spain won gold in front of almost 100,000 people at the Nou Camp.

‘Guardiola and Albert Ferrer were in the Spanish Olympic team which went all the way. At the time he was a young player but he could hold his own on the Dream Team.

‘There were a lot of strong characters and leaders on that team. You would imagine Guardiola, Koeman and Stoichkov would always go that way (into management).’ Calling the shots was another strong character. A chain-smoking Dutchman had just become the third person to win the European Cup as a player and manager.

‘Cruyff was an amazing player still, joining in on short games,’ Ekelund recalled. ‘He had his strengths and his weaknesses as a manager. He had a certain way about him of getting the players to perform.

‘He was strategically very good. It sort of amazed me, the weaknesses of the other team didn’t matter, where it was on the pitch. He’d put stronger players to face those weaker opponents.’ Despite such characters and experiences, he wanted to move on. I felt my internship was over and I looked for the next step,’ he said.

His time at Southampton was ended by a troublesome back injury and after following Ball to Manchester City (again on loan), he played four times before another loan at Ron Atkinson’s Coventry.

‘Big Ron brought me in and Gordon Strachan took over, and I think they were slightly different philosophies! Big Ron had plans with me, but Strachan changed that as soon as he arrived! I fell in between two chairs on that one!’

Ekelund returned to his homeland with Lyngby (loan) and Odense before short spells at Toulouse and Walsall. In 2001 he moved to the San Jose Earthquakes, who won two MLS Cups in three years.

Ekelund still lives in California with his English wife Claire. The couple have their own company, Bebe au Lait, which sells a range of nursing goods.

As he looks back on his remarkable career, his short, sweet cameo at Southampton which forged one of the Premier League’s great double acts still brings a smile to his face.

‘Le Tiss and I from day one - even when I joined the team at the training camp in Holland and met them there. It was very early on, I thought, “We’re on the same page here”, which was nice.’

Puel “angry” with Hazard

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel joked that he was “angry” with his former star player Eden Hazard as the Belgian midfielder gave Saints a tough night as title chasing Chelsea beat them 4-2.

Puel managed Hazard when he was a youngster at Lille, and gave the maverick attacker his first big break.

Hazard showed little gratitude at Stamford Bridge last night with a terrific performance and a goal as the Blues produced a win that condemned Saints to defeat and edged them nearer to the Premier League trophy.

“I am angry against him tonight of course,” laughed Puel when asked about Hazard.

“It’s a fantastic player and I’m happy for him.

“It was the same at the beginning when he was assisting with the same quality to make penetration, to give assists, and now with the added maturity he continues his quality and his fantastic play.

“Congratulations for him because he has had a fantastic career and I am happy for him.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was a relieved man after securing a victory to move his side ever nearer to the Premier League crown.

He also had warm words for Saints after their display at the Bridge.

“I think that the most important thing is to look at ourselves and tonight was a big win for us,” he said.

“We had to play again after a really strong game against Tottenham where we reach the final of the Cup and you know the importance for us, for me and the players to reach this target to play the final of the FA Cup.

“Also now for us it’s very important to try and fight and to win the title.

“Today it wasn’t easy because we faced a really strong team.

“They had rested for ten days and they hadn’t pressure and in this case you can enjoy this type of game when you play the team at the top of the league.

“For us it wasn’t easy but I am pleased because of the fantastic effort from my players.

“They showed me great will and desire to win this game and it’s important now to rest and prepare another tough game against Everton.”

He added: "It was a good win and I think today I have to be pleased for a great effort, a fantastic effort from my players. It wasn’t easy to play after a tough game against Tottenham.

"It shows my choices were right for the game against Tottenham and for the game against Southampton. It’s not easy for the coach to take this responsibility, to make these strong choices, but I have to be pleased because I have a squad of great men and good players.

“It’s important for us to look at ourselves, these are the most important things. We must be ready and to prepare for the next game as we look at ourselves and not the others.”

Puel: Time to sharpen up

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, despite playing well for long spells, with Puel admitting their opponents were just more clinical in each penalty area.

Attention now turns to this weekend’s meeting with the relegation-threatened Tigers at St Mary’s, and the Southampton manager knows what he wants to see from his side.

“We didn’t find the good clinical edge in the boxes and we need to correct this, but we were playing a great team and the details made the difference,” he said. "We saw good intensity and quality on the pitch and it will be interesting now to improve on the concentration of the detail.

“After two games lost it’s a very important game the next one, because we need to stay in the first half of the table. It will be a difficult opponent, because they won their last games, they want to stay of course in the division and it will be important to keep the good intensity and be more clinical.”

Puel also reflected on the return of Oriol Romeu and Sofiane Boufal to the starting line-up at Chelsea.

“We know his (Romeu’s) quality to start the play and also to recover the ball,” he said. "It was difficult to finish the game, because it was his first one after suspension, but we know his quality and his spirit. All the players can do good work with the ball, but now we need to correct the details.

“I think Boufal can do a good first half, with good quality. He played with good penetration and it was interesting to see him from the start of the game, because he’s a talented player.”

THE VERDICT: Saints can’t just fizzle out

Show/hide article…

It was never likely to be an easy end to the season for Saints, but they have to try and ensure that it doesn’t fall flat.

There has been a sense of drift ever since the EFL Cup final.

That is a situation that is hardly all of Saints’ making. It is not their fault games have been few and far between.

But with the Europa League having fizzled out earlier than hoped, and in contrast to a first half of the campaign that was almost beyond hectic, it has felt like a slow march to the end of the season for about two months already.

In football momentum is everything, and therefore it is imperative that Saints do not allow things to just fizzle out.

Saying is easier than doing when your final matches contain opposition like Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Even so, Claude Puel is still trying to establish himself at Saints, and has yet to win over a proportion of the crowd, making this period, without the pressure of relegation or challenging for Europe, and given the struggles against the bigger clubs, important for him personally.

Also, when it comes to the summer and trying to keep and attract players, Saints will certainly want there to be a feeling of optimism around the club and the squad.

St Mary’s has seen before what happens when a sense of drift takes hold, and it’s not good.

After the pummelling by City, which came on the back of a small but decent little run, there was a spirited response against Chelsea, who were not the rampaging side of earlier in the season but more in the mode of ‘getting it done.’ However, yet another game against top opposition ended in defeat leaving Puel with work to do to get some spark back into the campaign.

The first half at Stamford Bridge ebbed and flowed in dramatic, and often unexpected fashion.

You could have predicted that Chelsea would come out of the traps flying. They needed the win for their title ambitions, and were always going to be pumped for the occasion.

You might have predicted that the pressure would take its toll on Saints, as it duly did as they conceded an early goal.

But what followed thereafter was good entertainment.

It felt as though the writing was on the wall for Saints as Jack Stephens failed to make a clean contact to a deep Dusan Tadic free kick and shortly afterwards Chelsea scored, especially as the goal was conceded in such a limp fashion.

One long ball allowed Diego Costa to get to the right by-line. There were eight Saints players in the area but, Costa aside, only one other Chelsea man.

However, Eden Hazard was given the chance to hit a first time finish from Costa’s cut back and buried it in the bottom corner.

Far from crumpling though Saints actually started to take charge of the game. Chelsea puzzlingly sat back, dropping the intensity levels as if they felt it was job done.

After Hazard fired over, Saints started to create chances, and eventually it led to a goal.

James Ward-Prowse’s corner was inadvertently flicked on at the near post by a Chelsea head and came to Manolo Gabbiadini. He needed no second invitation to shoot.

Thibaut Courtois made the save but the ball broke to Oriol Romeu in the middle of the six yard box and he had the simplest of finishes.

It did wake Chelsea up and as the half wore on they produced waves of pressure, but Courtois still had to punch clear a free kick while Sofiane Bofual hit the side netting.

But in a cruel blow Chelsea regained their advantage in first half stoppage time.

The imperious N’Golo Kante wasn’t tracked after a corner was cleared and lofted in a cross, Marcos Alonso put it back across goal and Gary Cahill arrived to head downwards and past Fraser Forster.

The timing of the goal was a killer, and Chelsea came out for the second period in no mood to let Saints back in.

However, the frustration for Saints was that, while they troubled the Blues’ backline, the goals they conceded were partly of their own making, which you don’t need against a side capable of scoring when there is little you can do to stop them.

It was 3-1 on 54 minutes as Saints failed to deal with a short corner, and Cesc Fabregas had time to measure a chipped cross into the area.

Costa had got himself on Ryan Bertrand at the far post and got in front of the left back to head home.

Saints did create a couple of openings, Courtois diving to his right to turn wide from Tadic’s long range drive and Gabbiadini hitting the side netting from a tight angle.

It was Chelsea who were on top though.

Forster had to stand strong to deny Kante as he tried to chip the Saints keeper after being played in by the breaking Hazard.

But he was beaten for a fourth time just before the end as Costa played a brace of quick one-twos to work himself into the area.

The first was with Hazard, the second with Pedro, and Costa finished off the slick move with a low driven shot into the near bottom corner.

There was still time for Saints to grab a consolation in stoppage time as ex-Chelsea man Bertrand flicked a header from the penalty spot into the far corner.

But by then the game was already gone and, while there was no shame in defeat to the soon to be crowned champions, there remains the feeling Saints need to get something for themselves soon.

Romeu doesn’t want compliments

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu took no pleasure in scoring his first Premier League goal of the season during the 4-2 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard, on his return from a two-game suspension, hit home to equalise against his former club after Eden Hazard had given the Premier League leaders an early lead.

But, Romeu was left to rue another Saints loss to a leading top-flight side, making it no wins in nine league attempts against the elite’s frontrunners this term.

He was also disappointed in the poor defensive display, which saw Diego Costa (2) and Gary Cahill’s goals seal victory for Antonio Conte’s side, and has demanded better from Claude Puel’s men.

“Sometimes even after scoring you don’t feel happy after the game and today is one of those,” he said.

“When I scored it made it 1-1 and it put us back in the game, but after the goal they scored straight before half time and that was quite hard.

“We came back in the second half not with the same mentality for the first half … they were better than us in the second half, but in the first half we were just as good as them.”

He added: “They started very quick in the game, they scored with the first shot that they had, but we kept playing, having possession, playing between the lines and creating chances.

“We could score and get back into the game but that goal just before half time was key to the game.”

Romeu was not happy about the manner in which Saints conceded.

“No [I’m not happy] and, I’m not sure how many, but a few were coming from set pieces and crosses into the box and second balls,” he said.

“It’s something we are conceding quite a lot from recently and it’s something we need to get better at because to win games we need to make sure we’re not conceding four goals every game.”

The 25-year-old revealed that many of the Chelsea players complimented Saints on their quality after the game, but Romeu would rather be taking big scalps in the spirit of last season than being praised after defeat.

“We can compete against anyone and this year we are not winning against top teams and that’s something we need to improve on,” he said.

“I don’t know what happens – it was the same in the final [EFL Cup final against Manchester United].

“I talk with some players then and today the same with some Chelsea players, they’re telling me ‘you’re playing very good’, ‘you do good football’, ‘don’t worry, you have a good team’.

“But we want to win, we don’t just want to be nice and people talking good about us – we want to compete and win games even though we’re competing against top teams.”

Last term, Saints won against all the big guns.

“We won against all the top teams last season and this year it hasn’t happened,” Romeu continued.

“We’re playing good and we’re still doing top things, but may be not enough to win games.”

“It feels a bit sad when they’re telling you you’re playing good and have a good team, but what we want is to win games and that would makes us happy.

“It’s good to hear those things, but better after a win.”

Liverpool ready to smash record to sign Premier League star: Chelsea will be fuming

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp’s side have suffered from lacklustre defending at times this season. And they’re thought to be on the lookout for a new centre-back before their next Premier League campaign. The Liverpool Echo claim they plan strengthen their back line with a move for Dutch ace Van Dijk this summer.

But he won’t come cheap, with Southampton thought to be asking £50m for the 25-year-old. That would make him £15m more expensive than their previous record signing: striker Andy Carroll. Liverpool will have to beat out Arsenal and Chelsea to his signature.

Both clubs are also thought to be eyeing a move for the defender and have the resources to start a bidding war. If Klopp’s side do land Van Dijk, it will be the fourth season in a row they’ve bought a player from Southampton. And they’ll be hoping this move is as successful as their last purchase – Sadio Mane – who lit up the league earlier in the year before a knee injury ended his season.
