Liverpool ready to smash transfer record to sign Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are ready to smash their transfer record to lure Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk to Anfield.

The Reds face competition from a crux of Premier League clubs to land the Dutchman but have not been put off by the centre-half’s £50million price tag, report the Liverpool Echo.

The previous biggest fee Liverpool have ever spent on a player was the £35million they paid Newcastle United for Andy Carroll in January 2011.

Arsenal have become the latest top-flight side to register their interest in Van Dijk. As well as Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton are also in the hunt.

Van Dijk is Jurgen Klopp’s top defensive target but the Reds boss knows the club must achieve Champions League qualification in order to have any hope of signing him.

Liverpool insist it won’t come down to money and they are prepared to make the 25-year-old defender one of the club’s highest wage earners.

Saints, who bought Van Dijk from Celtic for £13million two years ago, are increasingly resigned to losing the Holland international.

Van Dijk, who has been sidelined since January with a foot injury, wants to play Champions League football and intends to weigh up his options in the summer.

And Souness was fuming about Soares’ positioning for Chelsea’s first goal.

The Blues cruised to a 4 - 2 victory over the Saints.

KURT ZOUMA was absolutely amazed when Nemanja Matic rifled in a scorcher to book Chelsea’s place in the FA Cup final yesterday.

The Spain international then crossed to find Eden Hazard who rifled home the fifth minute opener.

Souness reckons the goal could have been prevented if Southampton’s back line was more organised.

“Soares has gone back and played him onside,” he said on Sky Sports.

Chelsea 4-2 Southampton PLAYER RATINGS

Show/hide article…

The Premier League looks all but wrapped up after Chelsea’s demolition of Southampton on Tuesday night.

Diego Costa claimed two goals after setting up Eden Hazard for the opener and Gary Cahill nipped in front of his attempt at a bicycle to head home the second.

His third saw the Blues swagger like they were celebrating the title already, with the Brazilian’s two one-twos splitting the Saints’ defence before his millimetre perfect finish.

Andy Dunn was at Stamford Bridge and rates the players’ performances.

No glaring errors but a general anxiety about his work

Uncharacteristically all at sea on occasions, neither calm or assured

Back to his adventurous if somewhat unpredictable self

Early shakiness shaken off by the crucial second goal

Was more potent from set-pieces than he was on the flank

Booked. A few moments but the Player of the Year was not at his best

Eventually got a firm foothold in midfield, always influential

Booked. Nice pass in build-up to opener, always probing, always intelligent

A cool finish and the most accomplished performer on the park

Cumbersome, annoying, pretty slow but, somehow, still very effective for his brace

Unhappy with the protection early on and rightly so

His pace was tested on several occasions but hardly let him down

Like so many, relished the physical confrontation with Costa

Idling for Chelsea’s opening goal but he was not alone there

Not defensively committed but a danger when going forward

Booked. A sweet goal back at the Bridge but a struggle overall

Another solid performance, mixing it well against a stellar midfield

Couple of flicks went wrong but enjoyed showing his passing range

Elegantly instrumental in most of his team’s attacking moments

Thoroughly enjoyed himself and caused a few problems

Has that happy knack of finding space in crowded penalty area

Deluxe squad player Cesc Fabregas helps settle edgy Chelsea’s nerves against Southampton

Show/hide article…

To be able to add Cesc Fabregas to their midfield play is a tremendous luxury for Chelsea, and it helped stretch their Premier League lead to seven points in a game more stressful than England’s best team would have hoped.

This felt like a pivotal win for Antonio Conte’s side, who are within sight of a fifth league title in 12 years. Sunday’s away trip to Everton is no doddle. But then Middlesbrough (home), West Brom (away), Watford (home) and Sunderland (home) line-up as Tottenham’s only friends as they seek to peg back that seven-point advantage. The way Conte is managing his resources, making clever team changes and using his bench constructively during games, Chelsea will have to forget everything they have learned to succumb to Tottenham’s pursuit.

One measure of their strength is that Fabregas - and Willian - have been largely back-up players in Conte’s masterplan. Yet Fabregas, a deluxe extra, in this kind of form, is capable of both hurtful passing and clever orchestration. He soothes nerves.

Conte is on a roll with his selections. His squad-shuffling at Wembley on Saturday caused alarm but was vindicated by a rousing 4-2 FA Cup semi-final win over Spurs, in which the rested big names joined the action when they were needed. This time, Fabregas added a third central midfield presence from the start, and grew in influence throughout the game until Pedro replaced him in the 76th minute. The hug and back-slap he received from Conte told a story.

Seven things you may have missed from Chelsea 4-2 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Chelsea took another step closer to the Premier League title with a 4-2 win over a spirited Southampton side at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Eden Hazard, Gary Cahill and a brace from Diego Costa extended the Blues’ lead over second-placed Tottenham to seven points. Blues old boys Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand netted against their former club but it was all in vain for Claude Puel’s side.

If you were too busy to keep an close watch on events on Tuesday, fear not. Sportsmail have picked some things you may have missed.

It took Chelsea barely five minutes to open the scoring at Stamford Bridge. Diego Costa was given space in box to find Hazard, who fired past Fraser Forster.

The goal was the Belgian’s 15th in the league this season – the first time he has managed that feat.

He managed 14 in both 2013-14 and 2014-15 but this is now his most prolific season since he scored 20 Ligue 1 goals for Lille in 2011-12.

Chelsea fans celebrate their ‘first trophy of the year’

Antonio Conte’s side still have work to do to claim their second Premier League title in three seasons. But the home crowd were celebrating some silverware ahead of kick-off on Tuesday.

Blues fans hailed midfielder N’Golo Kante after the France international was named PFA Player of the Year on Sunday. Kante was presented to the crowd, with the stadium announcer hailing it the club’s ‘first trophy of the year’.

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu has impressed this season for his patrolling displays in front of his back four.

But on his return to his former club, the Spaniard chose the perfect place to end his long duck in front of goal.

His equaliser midway through the first half was his first Premier League goal in 507 days.

He had not netted since December 2015. Unfortunately for Puel’s side on Tuesday, his goals didn’t come like London buses. But Ryan Bertrand did also score against his former club in stoppage time.

Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation has drawn plaudits from pundits and imitation opposing managers, alike. Both Gary Cahill and David Luiz were named in the PFA team of the year, while Cesar Azpilicueta’s stock continues to rise.

But Romeu’s first-half equaliser on Tuesday ensured they have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 11 Premier League games – their worst run since December 1996.

Hull were the last team to draw a blank against Conte’s side back in January.

When Gary Cahill nodded Chelsea back in front just before the half-time whistle, most of his team-mates immediately ran to celebrate with the central defender. David Luiz, however, had other ideas.

Famed for his eccentricity, the Brazilian decided instead to show off his acrobatic skills - swinging from the crossbar in front of the Shed End. Tarzan.

Diego Costa’s second-half header was not only the 50th Premier League goal of his career, it also ended his worst goalless run for four years.

Before Tuesday’s win, the 28-year-old had gone five league matches without a goal for the first time since 2012-13, when he went six La Liga matches without a goal for Atletico Madrid.

It took the forward 85 matches to reach the milestone – only seven players have needed fewer: Andy Cole (65), Alan Shearer (66), Ruud van Nistelrooy (68), Fernando Torres (72), Sergio Aguero (81), Thierry Henry (83) and Kevin Phillips (83).

He added Chelsea’s fourth late on, meaning he has scored four goals and registered two assists in their last four clashes with the Saints.

Costa’s first goal came after the forward got on the end of a pin-point cross from Cesc Fabregas.

The Spanish midfielder has had limited first team opportunities this season but on Tuesday his assist for Costa was the 103 he had managed in the Premier League.

He is now ahead of former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard and behind only Ryan Giggs in the league’s all-time rankings. The Welshman leads the way with a whopping 162.

Lampard was at Stamford Bridge to see the Spaniard in action, alongside his father Frank Sr.

Chelsea 4-2 Southampton: Saints beaten as Chelsea edge nearer title

Show/hide article…

Saints suffered a second successive defeat as Diego Costa ended his lean streak with a double as Premier League leaders Chelsea won 4-2 to restore their seven-point advantage over Tottenham.

Cesc Fabregas, Costa and Eden Hazard were substitutes in last Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Spurs, largely because of the proximity of this fixture.

And all three were instrumental as Antonio Conte’s side moved within 12 points of the title with five games remaining.

Hazard scored Chelsea’s first following a Fabregas through-ball and Costa lay-off.

Gary Cahill, back after gastroenteritis, headed in Chelsea’s second to give the hosts a half-time lead after ex-Blues midfielder Oriel Romeu netted for Saints.

And Costa notched his 50th Premier League goal from a Fabregas pass to end a seven-match scoreless run early in the second half and added a late fourth before Ryan Bertrand’s late consolation.

Chelsea’s prospects of a double in Conte’s first season as head coach remain alive.

Tottenham play their game in hand on Wednesday at Crystal Palace and have the more challenging run-in on paper.

Chelsea play Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 27 and will hope to have wrapped up the league by then, with Sunday’s trip to Everton the most difficult proposition in their final five games.

The Blues had lost two of their previous four league games - to Palace and at Manchester United - but shook off the wobble at Wembley.

Yet there were more anxious moments to come against Saints, whose pace and ingenuity troubled the Blues.

This was Chelsea’s first home game since it was announced that John Terry would be leaving in the summer following 22 years of service.

The club captain came off the substitutes’ bench for his 714th appearance and first in the league since November.

Terry, who has won 14 major trophies at Chelsea, could finish the season lifting more silverware.

Southampton were playing for the first time in 10 days, since a 3-0 home loss to Manchester City, and Conte had complained about Chelsea’s schedule.

His decision to start Hazard, Costa and Fabregas on the bench against Spurs was vindicated, as was the call to restore the trio - and Cahill - to the starting line-up here.

Five minutes in, Fabregas’ long ball found Costa, who delayed and laid the ball off for Hazard to shoot first time across Fraser Forster. It was the Belgium playmaker’s 15th Premier League goal of the season.

The trio combined again soon afterwards and Hazard curled over.

Chelsea’s lead lasted just 20 minutes as they conceded for an 11th straight league game.

Manolo Gabbiadini turned a corner back into the six-yard box and Romeu tapped in.

The midfielder, back from suspension, was prior to the match compared by Saints boss Claude Puel to N’Golo Kante.

Kante, the newly crowned Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year, soon showed his brilliance.

He weaved by three Saints players - including Romeu - in the right channel, but his cross towards Costa was intercepted.

Chelsea took a half-time lead when Saints failed to clear. Kante returned the ball towards Marcos Alonso who headed back across goal and Cahill rose above Costa’s acrobatics to head in.

Costa left the field at half-time squabbling like schoolboys with Jack Stephens, but soon had the goal he was so desperate to claim.

Hazard drove at Saints down the right before passing to Fabregas.

And Costa held off Bertrand to head in Fabregas’ pin-point cross, claiming his half-century of Premier League goals in 85 appearances.

Southampton would not roll over and Conte repeatedly urged his defenders to stay focused.

Forster spread himself to deny Kante on the counter before Conte called on Terry for the final four minutes for his first appearance since the FA Cup win at Wolves in February.

Terry was roundly cheered and there was further delight for home fans when Costa exchanged passes with Hazard, then Pedro, before driving the ball in.

There was still time for Chelsea to concede a second as Cedric Soares’ cross was headed in by ex-Blues man Bertrand.

Claude Puel: This is what I think about Eden Hazard

Show/hide article…

Eden Hazard opened the scoring for Chelsea against Southampton

Saints put in a spirited performance against Antonio Conte’s side, but were unstuck by Hazard’s early strike, along with Diego Costa brace and a goal from Gary Cahill.

But Puel wasn’t surprised Hazard helped make the difference against his side as he once managed the Belgian at Lille, where he started his professional career.

“We played against a good team,” said Puel.

Southampton made to pay for poor defensive display in defeat at Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Southampton were made to pay for a poor defensive display, as they were beaten 4-2 by Premier League title-chasing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Claude Puel’s men made a nightmare start by falling behind to Eden Hazard’s opener after only five minutes. Oriol Romeu offered the visitors a way back by scoring at his old stomping ground, only for Gary Cahill’s header to restore Chelsea’s lead on the stroke of half-time against the run of play.

A second-half double from the excellent Diego Costa put the game out of Southampton’s reach and Ryan Bertrand’s late header was no more than a consolation effort for Puel’s men.

For half an hour in between Romeu equalising and Cahill’s strike Southampton were the better team, which says a lot considering their opponents are chasing a league and FA Cup double. They were certainty not disgraced against the run-away leaders. James Ward-Prowse continues to ooze confidence after his England call-up last month and some of Saints’ attacking play was a joy to watch.

Despite a lot of positives going forward, especially in the opening 45 minutes, Southampton were a shambles at the back. Fans will be hoping this is not a glimpse into the future, with injured captain Virgil van Dijk constantly linked with a move away this summer. Southampton have had a good record against the so-called “big six” in recent seasons, but Puel has struggled in those fixtures.

5 – Why Puel signed free agent Martin Caceres only to refuse to use him despite Southampton’s obvious defensive deficiencies is a mystery. It was also a big call to drop Nathan Redmond, whose pace would surely have caused Chelsea problems, in favour of the unpredictable and under-performing Sofiane Boufal.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 4 – Was too slow to get down for Hazard’s opener and, barring one save to deny N’Golo Kante, carried himself nervously all night. No longer fills his defence with confidence.

DF Cedric Soares, 5 – Linked up with the attack neatly when Southampton were on top in the first half and supplied the cross for Bertrand’s late goal, but was kept on the back foot by the lively Marcos Alonso.

DF Maya Yoshida, 4 – Was caught flat-footed for Chelsea’s first goal and could not handle the aerial threat.

DF Jack Stephens, 4 – Has not disgraced himself in his breakthrough season, but struggles to handle combative strikers. Was bullied by Costa.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 5 – Should have done more to stop Costa towering above him for the match-clinching third goal. Partially made amends by scoring himself against his ex-employers.

MF Steven Davis, 5 – Was uncharacteristically sloppy in possession and continually gave the ball away. Was given a masterclass by Kante.

MF Oriol Romeu, 6 – The Chelsea flop loved scoring against his old club. Picked up his usual yellow card to take his tally for the season to 11.

MF James Ward-Prowse, 7 – Has clearly been perfecting his set-piece delivery during Southampton’s 10-day break between matches.

MF Dusan Tadic, 6 – Asked questions of the Chelsea defence with some clever touches.

MF Sofiane Boufal, 6 – Showed some silky skills in the first half while still hanging onto the ball for too long. Faded in the second period before coming off.

FW Manolo Gabbiadini, 6 – Played his part in the equalising goal and kept Chelsea’s three-man back line honest with his subtle movement.

FW Shane Long, N/R – Could not get into the game.

Chelsea 4-2 Southampton - PLAYER RATINGS: Diego Costa shines

Show/hide article…

Chelsea beat Southampton 4-2 in the Premier League to go seven points clear of Tottenham, who face Crystal Palace on Wednesday at Selhurst Park.

Goals from Eden Hazard, Gary Cahill and a double from Diego Costa ensured the Blues ran out emphatic winners as they moved closer to clinching the league title.

Sportsmail’s SAMI MOKBEL was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to rate both sets of players…

Courtois - Relatively untroubled the whole night but will have been disappointed with the way in which Oriel Romeu scored as Chelsea failed to keep a clean sheet once again. 6.5

Azpilicueta - Enjoyed another solid game at the back for Antonio Conte’s side but won’t be happy with conceding another goal. 7

Luiz - Held firm for most of the game at Stamford Bridge, especially during Southampton’s strong spell in the opening period. 7

Cahill - Led by example on the pitch by netting the crucial second goal just before half-time to put his side back into the lead with a brave header. 7.5

Moses - Proved a threat going forward most of the night and eased some early pressure on Chelsea with some darting runs. 6.5

Matic - Urged to ‘shoot’ throughout on Wednesday after his Wembley heroics but instead was on hand to break down play and keep the play simple. 7

Kante - The Frenchman’s energy in the middle of the park again unsettled Southampton’s midfield. Picked up a yellow card just before half-time. 7.5

Fabregas - Back in the starting line-up and the creative midfielder took his opportunity well. Set up Costa for the final goal on Wednesday to move outright second for most Premier League assists. 7.5

Alonso - Again another consistent performance from the wing-back to help Chelsea move closer to the Premier League title. 6.5

Hazard - Just like for the majority of the season, the Belgian winger was a constant threat against the Saints with his trickery and pace. Also scored the opening goal to help fire Chelsea to victory. 7.5

Costa - Chelsea’s best player on the pitch. Scored two great goals for the league leaders on what could have been a nervy night for the hosts. 8.5

Subs: Begovic, Ake, Pedro 6.5 (for Fabregas 77), Willian (for Hazard 90), Batshuayi, Terry 6 (for Moses 86), Chalobah.

Forster - Will be massively disappointed to concede four in one match. The goalkeeper has now let in seven in his last two games. 5.5

Soares - Set up the last goal for Ryan Bertrand but no defender can be happy with letting in four, whoever the opponent. 6

Yoshida - The Japanese defender was at fault for the first goal, giving Costa way too much time to offload the ball for Hazard to slot home. 6.5

Stephens - Part of the Southampton defence that struggled all night to deal with the pace and skill of Chelsea’s front line. 6.5

Bertrand - Scored a late consolation goal right at the death on Wednesday but may feel he could have been stronger to hold off Costa for Chelsea’s third of the night. 7

Romeu - Scored Southampton’s first goal of the night against his former club but was booked during the second period. 7

Ward-Prowse - Showed a strong passing rage and his set-piece skills proved a threat throughout the night. 7

Tadic - Instrumental in many of his side’s attacks but failed to have such an influence as Chelsea extended their lead in the second-half. 6

Gabbiadini - Again, like Tadic, proved a difficult opponent for the Chelsea defenders in the first-half as Claude Puel’s side enjoyed some success going forward. 7

Boufal - Showed some great trickery and gave the Chelsea defence some problems early on. 6

Subs: Hassen, Clasie, Long 6 (for Ward-Prowse 82), Rodriguez 6 (for Gabbiadini 86), Redmond 6 (for Boufal 68), Caceres, Hojbjerg.

Puel: Details were the difference

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten 4-2 by the Premier League leaders at Stamford Bridge, despite producing plenty of positive moments during the match.

Reflecting on the result, Puel said: "I think it was a good performance on the pitch, but without the good result, and without being clinical enough in both the boxes, offensively and defensively.

"We conceded goals at bad moments – five minutes into the first half, then the second right at the end, and the third just at the beginning of the second half.

"It’s a shame, because the quality we showed and the opportunities we created, we produced a good game against a great team, but tonight I think the details made the difference – defending better on free-kicks, for example, and two great players like Diego Costa and Eden Hazard helped make the difference.

"It’s a shame, because it was better than against Manchester City. I was more satisfied with the level of our game.
