Southampton 1-0 West Brom: Boufal nets brilliant late winner
Show/hide article…
A day of Premier League excitement looked like it would end with a result that was rather expected from two sides struggling to score.
Then, substitute Sofiane Boufal showed up. The 24-year-old had been on the field for only four minutes when he embarked on a 70-yard run, ending it by scoring the winner for Southampton.
It included Boufal getting the better of five West Bromwich Albion players, leaving two on their backsides after comically clattering into one another. A worthy winner if ever there was one.
When Southampton smashed their transfer record to sign Boufal last summer, it was match-winning moments like this they hoped the £16million buy would bring.
Yet even though he is now the one to beat for October’s goal of the month, Boufal insists it is not the best he has ever scored.
‘It’s very special and the win was the most important thing,’ said the 24-year-old, who has started only once in the Premier League this season.
‘I scored one better in France but I’m so happy and I passed a long, difficult moment here. I showed the manager on this pitch I can play in this team.’
Mauricio Pellegrino labelled it a ‘beautiful goal’ and must now take notice of Boufal when selecting his line-ups. ‘We dominated the game,’ he added.
Southampton had won only one of their last 10 Premier League home fixtures. To their credit, they often looked like the only side trying to get a goal here.
This game had not been one to tell the grandchildren about. Heading into this, Southampton and West Brom had scored as many goals as Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.
Those who tuned in to BT Sport were hopeful of a surprise 5-4 thriller. No such luck, though those who patiently persisted witnessed a fine winner. Tony Pulis, however, was frustrated.
‘The kid’s scored a special goal,’ Pulis said. ‘I’ve seen him play on numerous occasions and he’s a player who can drift in and out of games but when he gets the ball, you just don’t know what he’s going to do.
‘It’s terrible to say, I couldn’t see him scoring. I thought we were very, very flat.’
Southampton were on top from the start. They struck the woodwork in the 16th minute through Ryan Bertrand, whose curling free-kick clipped off Jonny Evans’ head in the wall.
Oriol Romeu was later left kicking himself when he swivelled and sent a shot wide from two yards.
Shane Long, who has now not scored in 26 games for his club and country, likewise fluffed his lines when he sent a shot wide after a wonderful counter-attack. It was his 100th Premier League appearance too.
West Brom could have snatched it against all odds when Jay Rodriguez beat offside trap but not Fraser Forster. Against his former club, the 28-year-old spooned his shot well wide, with the ball finishing closer to the corner flag than the goal.
That was costly as Boufal was brought on in the 81st minute before scoring in the 85th to secure Southampton the win.

Brilliant Boufal wins it for Saints
Show/hide article…
Introduced as a substitute late on, Boufal went on an incredible run in the 84th minute that carried him three-quarters of the St Mary’s pitch and saw him beat man after man before firing into the bottom corner from 18 yards.
It was an incredible intervention on what had looked to be another frustrating afternoon for Saints, who had been held here a week previously by Newcastle.
But, having lit up St Mary’s twice last season with sensational efforts, Boufal produced something even more magical under the lights to send the Southampton fans home happy.
There was one change for the hosts, as captain Steven Davis was restored to the starting line-up in favour of Nathan Redmond, who dropped to the bench.
It was an upbeat start from Saints, as the wind swirled and the rain began to come down.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side enjoyed plenty of the ball in the early stages and went within inches of gaining the lead after 16 minutes.
Shane Long was fouled in a central position by Jake Livermore 25 yards out, with Ryan Bertrand’s resulting free-kick deflecting off the West From wall and hitting the outside of the post.
Bertrand was again at the heart of Saints’ next opportunity, driving into the left side of the area and pulling a clever pass back to Dušan Tadić, whose angled strike was straight at Ben Foster in the Albion goal.
An even better opportunity then arrived in the 23rd minute, as Steven Davis swung in a corner, which Virgil van Dijk got a touch to at the near post. The ball dropped to Oriol Romeu inside the six-yard box, but, with his back to goal, the midfielder could only spin and shoot wide.
The pressure didn’t relent, and Saints again carved out a glorious chance in the 29th minute, with Manolo Gabbiadini going on a bursting run down the left and sliding a low ball into Shane Long at the near post, but he turned the ball inches wide with his right foot.
The hosts got a reminder five minutes from the interval that they needed to remain wary of West Brom’s threat, as Allan Nyom, on earlier as a substitute for the injured Jonny Evans, cut onto his right foot on the edge of the area, only to blaze over.
Back at the other end, Maya Yoshida twice went close, from corners, first with a bouncing header that Foster had to push over and then with a bicycle kick that flew a few yards wide.
The half-time break didn’t change the flow of the game, as Saints attacked straight from the off again, and Gabbiadini threatened quickly as he met Cédric’s right-wing cross and sent a header flying half-a-yard over.
Gabbiadini saw a shot from 20 yards deflected wide shortly afterwards, while Long then tested Foster with a low strike from the same distance.
Former Saints striker Jay Rodriguez had his first effort of the day at the other end in the 55th minute, but his first-time strike from Solomon Rondon’s knock down drifted wide from 20 yards.
He should have punished his former club five minutes later, though, as Grzegorz Krychowiak played him clean through on goal, but Rodriguez skewed his right-footed shot well wide with just Fraser Forster to beat.
Saints’ first change came in the 69th minute, as Pellegrino made an attacking switch, taking off Romeu and sending on Redmond in his place.
He nearly made a major impact within moments of coming on, as his angled ball from the left worked its way through to an unmarked Tadić on the far corner of the area. He was denied by a sprawling Foster, before then going to ground under a challenge from the keeper, as he attempted to retrieve the loose ball, but referee Graham Scott ignored his appeals for a penalty.
The lively Redmond then curled just wide from 20 yards with ten minutes remaining, before two more subs were thrown on, as Tadić and Long were replaced by Boufal and Charlie Austin.
And it was Boufal who produced a moment of absolute genius to win it, picking up the ball midway inside his own half and then spinning past two West Brom players before driving up the pitch. The Saints playmaker beat man after man, before cutting onto his right foot 18 yards out and stroking a beautiful finish into the bottom corner, as St Mary’s erupted.

Southampton 1-0 West Brom: Sofiane Boufal wondergoal hands Saints victory
Show/hide article…
An amazing individual goal from Sofiane Boufal handed Southampton a 1-0 victory over West Brom, after a dreary game at St Mary’s.
Substitute Boufal scored with just four minutes remaining to hand Mauricio Pellegrino’s men victory and move them up to 10th.
The Saints had always looked the game’s most likely winners, but found Tony Pulis’s Albion side in particularly stubborn mood.
Ben Foster denied Dusan Tadic and Shane Long during the first half, while Ryan Bertrand hit the post with a freekick.
But there was no denying Moroccan winger Boufal, who had replaced Tadic with nine minutes remaining.
Picking the ball up deep in his own half, Boufal drove at the heart of the Albion defence, shrugging aside a number of challenges and beating five men, before coolly stroking into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Charlie Austin would also hit the outside of the post in injury time, but Southampton held on for a first win since mid-September.

Southampton 1-0 West Brom: Sofiane Boufal wondergoal seals late win
Show/hide article…
Sofiane Boufal’s superb individual late goal secured Southampton a 1-0 victory over West Brom at St Mary’s on Saturday.
The game looked to be heading for a stalemate after Ryan Bertrand hit the post in the first half and former Saints forward Jay Rodriguez dragged a good opportunity wide later in the game.
But substitute Boufal snatched victory for Saints in the 85th minute when he ran 70 yards, breaking away from challenges and leaving several players in his wake, before finishing into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
The victory is only Southampton’s second at home in the Premier League this season while West Brom have won just two of their last 18 league matches.
The Baggies showed little attacking ambition on a blustery evening and now face a tricky upcoming run with Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham to play in their next four games.
Southampton largely played on the front foot and went close early on as Bertrand’s free-kick deflected off the wall and hit the post.
Oriol Romeu dragged a close-range shot wide from a corner before Shane Long - who has now not scored in 20 games for Southampton - failed to finish from 10 yards out.
West Brom, who lost Jonny Evans to injury on the half-hour mark and saw Craig Dawson limp off later on, offered little going forward and were indebted to goalkeeper Ben Foster for tipping clear a header from Maya Yoshida.
Saints continued to control the game after half-time as Manolo Gabbiadini headed over and Shane Long shot at Foster.
West Brom’s best opening of the match fell to Rodriguez on the hour mark but he failed to even hit target after being played through on goal.
Dusan Tadic was denied by Foster at the other end but Saints were eventually rewarded for their persistence, although it took a moment of individual brilliance to break the deadlock.
Boufal picked up inside his own half, escaped the attentions of a few challenges and then burst clear before cutting inside on the edge of the West Brom box and finishing into the bottom corner. The substitute also set up Charlie Austin for a late chance but he hit the outside of the post.
He only entered the pitch in the 81st minute, but Boufal provided the match-winning moment which will go down as a goal-of-the-season contender.
The substitute carried the ball 70 yards before keeping his composure and finishing into the bottom corner. It was a brilliant goal to decide a game that was otherwise short on quality in the final third.
Southampton are live on Sky Sports Premier League next Sunday when they make a trip along the coast to Brighton. Meanwhile, West Brom host Premier League leaders Manchester City on Saturday.

Sofiane Boufal’s sensational solo goal sees Southampton beat West Brom
Show/hide article…
There will be no need for an October goal of the month competition. Sofiane Boufal, the Southampton substitute, decided the outcome after 85 minutes of an otherwise forgettable match with a 70-yard run from just outside his own penalty area and a scoring shot from the edge of West Bromwich Albion’s.
Boufal, once Saints’ record signing, has been largely a bit-part player since joining from Lille for £16 milllion in August 2016, occasionally impressing before returning to the bench that has been his natural habitat in English football. This was only his second league goal for the club - but what a goal.
It was a far better than the game deserved, but was due reward for Southampton’s greater ambition. West Bromwich Albion routinely pulled everyone bar Salomon Rondon back and challenged Southampton to find a way past, round or through them. Until Boufal’s wonder strike, it seemed they would fail to do so.
They started brightly and a clever pass from Dusan Tadic forced an early corner, headed over the bar by central defender Maya Yoshida. But too soon any subtlety was replaced by mere energy and both sides closed one another down so diligently that the only available space was far from either goal. Mario Lemina looked in vain 35 yards out for a teammate in space so chanced his arm and watched his shot fly harmlessly over the bar.
Sometimes the defending overstepped the mark and after 17 minutes Southampton were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and nearly scored. Ryan Bertrand took it, the ball flicking the head of Jonny Evans in the defensive wall and looping past goalkeeper Ben Foster but off the top of the post to safety.
Bertrand then made a clever run behind the Albion defence and pulled the ball back for Tadic, but his shot was straight at Foster and easy for the goalkeeper. Despite their lack of any sort of cutting edge, Saints were doing most of the attacking and the visitors’ normally efficient rearguard was rattled.
A corner kick from the left appeared to brush the arm of Salomon Rondon and as Virgil Van Dijk appealed loudly for a penalty, defenders stood still while play continued. Fortunately for them, Oriol Romeu, turning as rapidly as a tanker in the Solent, stabbed his shot wide.
Next it was the turn of Tadic to survive a penalty claim for handling as a cross arced into the Saints penalty area through the wind and rain. But Saints broke away and Manolo Gabbiadini launched a run down the left, leaving Nacer Chadli trailing in his wake. Looking up, he spied Shane Long making ground in the centre and played an inch-perfect pass into his path.
The Northam End rose to salute a goal as Long made contact but somehow, the Ireland forward got his footwork all wrong and managed to flick the ball the wrong side of the post.He has now failed to score in 26 consecutive games for club and country.
Yoshida decided his forwards needed finishing lessons but although he went close twice, first forcing a save from Foster with a header from a Steve Davis corner and then sending an overhead kick a yard wide, he was unable to provide them. Gabbiadini did well to get above Craig Dawson to connect with a cross by Cedric, but his header dropped onto the roof of the net.
Even former Saints were gripped by the malaise. A first-time pass by Grzegorz Krychowiak sent Jay Rodriguez clear but he pulled his shot well wide.ut there could have been a goal at each end with 20 minutes to go. Tadic, looking suspiciously offside, found himself clear on the right but lifted his shot into the chest of Foster, tumbling unconvincingly in search of a penalty as the goalkeeper scrambled after the loose ball. Play switched tio the other end and Cadli sent in a shot that looked to be dropping under the crossbar but Fraser Forster finger-tipped it over.
Finally, four minutes after taking the field, Boufal collected the ball deep in his own half and advanced with purpose. It soon became clear that he had only one thing on his mind and he swept past at least four opponents befor finishing coolly with a low shot placed wide of Foster’s left hand.

Southampton 1-0 West Brom: Boufal wonder goal secures win
Show/hide article…
Sofiane Boufal scored his first goal in ten months to hand Saints a much needed 1-0 victory against West Brom.
The Moroccan international was introduced as a late sub as Mauricio Pellegrino’s side tried in vain to break down a stubborn Baggies backline and executed a sublime piece of individual magic five minutes from time to grab the points.
Boufal’s breath-taking run from deep inside his own half before a brilliant finish into the bottom corner gave Saints only their third win of the season.
Saints started the game in their 4-2-3-1 formation, with Shane Long out on the right, Dusan Tadic in the hole and Steven Davis on the left, with Manolo Gabbiadini as the lone striker through the middle.
West Brom had the first crack at goal as Gareth Barry tried his luck from 20 yards with a shot that hit the side netting.
It was a rare foray forward with the Baggies playing a predictable game, but executing it well.
They were so deep from the off, getting ten men behind the ball and happy to sit two banks of players in front of their own box to make themselves very hard to break down, and then try and hit on the counter attack.
Mario Lemina tried a speculative effort from distance to try and get something going for Saints but sliced well over.
Saints came so close to taking the lead on 17 minutes as they hit the post.
Long won a free kick in a fairly central position 20 yards out that Ryan Bertrand tried to whip over the wall. His left footed curler clipped the head of Jonny Evans in the wall and deflected onto the post.
Tadic forced Ben Foster into a save two minutes later after being found by Bertrand’s left wing cutback but his shot was held at the near post by the Baggies stopper.
Saints were piling on the pressure and possibly should have taken the lead moments later as West Brom failed to clear an inswinging corner and the ball fell to Oriol Romeu in the middle of the six yard box.
He had to try and finish on the spin but couldn’t find the target.
After West Brom had penalty appeals waved away as Tadic clearly handled in the area, Saints broke quickly and spurned a golden opportunity on 29 minutes.
Gabbiadini led the charge with a surging run down the left and produced a perfect low cross to find Long. The striker opted to let the ball run across him and take it with his right foot but from just a few yards out put it wide.
West Brom were forced into a substitution on 32 minutes as Jonny Evans limped off following an earlier clash with Long to be replaced by Allan Nyom.
Maya Yoshida came close three minutes before half time with as he won a header from a corner six yards out but the ball bounced up at a nice height for Foster who dived to his left to turn wide.
That proved to be the final chance of a first half in which Saints had created a few openings but couldn’t break the deadlock.
Saints were knocking on the door at the start of the second period and threatened as Gabbiadini flicked a header from a right wing cross from Cedric Soares narrowly over the bar.
Long tried to force the issue with a low drive from 20 yards out but though it was well struck it was straight at Foster.
West Brom made a second change with Gareth McAuley replacing Gareth Barry on 53 minutes as the Baggies went to five at the back.
Jay Rodriguez had his first effort at goal against his old side after Solomon Rondon knocked the ball down to him outside the area but his shot went tamely wide.
Fraser Forster had something resembling a save to make as West Brom got a first shot on target on 56 minutes with a Kieran Gibbs header requiring stopping even if it wasn’t exactly a taxing stop.
Rodriguez had a great chance for West Brom as a ball over the top saw him burst through on goal and had only Forster to beat but as the ball bounced in front of him he put his half volley across goal and well wide.
Nacer Chadli became the first player in the book for a trip on Tadic.
Gabbiadini had another sight of goal from the edge of the box but he could only guide the ball towards Foster who made a comfortable save.
Saints made their first change on 70 minutes as Nathan Redmond came on for Romeu.
Tadic had a fantastic chance to give Saints the lead two minutes later as a ball from the left came all the way through to him in space at the far post. However, Foster charged out and smothered the finish.
Tadic then appealed for a penalty as he went down chasing the rebound. Foster did touch his thigh but the midfielder went down easily.
Chadli tried an instinctive effort first time at the other end which Forster turned over the bar.
Saints responded with a double change with nine minutes remaining to try and get a goal with Sofiane Boufal and Charlie Austin coming on for Tadic and Long.
The substitution did the trick as Boufal scored a wonder goal five minutes from time.
He picked the ball up midway inside his own half, tricked his way past two players and burst forward.
As he approached the edge of the area he cut inside onto his right footed and steered a perfectly measured shot into the bottom corner.
West Brom were forced to finish the game with ten men as the injured Craig Dawson had to be helped from the field.
It meant Saints were able to finish the game at something of a canter – they came closest to scoring as Austin hit the outside of the post from a very acute angle - and that, deservedly, by far the best moment of the match secured the three points.

Southampton 1-0 West Brom: Sofiane Boufal seals victory for Saints
Show/hide article…
A stunning solo goal from Sofiane Boufal lit up St Mary’s as Southampton beat West Brom 1-0.
The substitute ran fully 70 yards from inside his own half and left three defenders on their backsides - two of whom had collided with each other - before sliding the ball home for a truly memorable strike.
It was going to take a moment of supreme quality, or abject stupidity, to settle this otherwise drab affair and thankfully it was the former as Southampton’s record signing secured their second home win of the season.
These two sides had previously only scored seven times each this season, so nobody travelled to the south coast expecting a goal glut.
But with the visitors exhibiting their customary lack of ambition on the road, Southampton soon took the initiative and were inches from opening the scoring after Shane Long was fouled on the edge of the area.
Ryan Bertrand’s free-kick flicked off the head of Jonny Evans in the wall and then came back off the top of a post.
Moments later Bertrand sped down the left wing before cutting the ball back to Dusan Tadic, who could only sidefoot straight into the arms of Ben Foster.
West Brom were not looking their usual defensively sound selves, especially after Evans departed with an injury Northern Ireland will be praying does not put his World Cup play-off hopes in jeopardy.
They had another escape when Virgil van Dijk appealed in vain for a penalty after a corner from Steven Davis appeared to hit the arm of Solomon Rondon.
The ball instead found its way to Oriel Romeu, who swivelled in front of goal but could only hook the chance wide.
Long had the opportunity to end his 25-match goal drought for club and country when Manolo Gabbiadini squared to him six yards out but the Republic of Ireland striker, making his 100th Saints appearance, seemed to get his feet in a tangle and stabbed his shot the wrong side of the post.
After the break West Brom almost landed a sucker punch when Grzegorz Krychowiak fed Jay Rodriguez, who burst through against his former club only to shank his effort wide.
But with five minutes remaining Boufal, who had only come on four minutes earlier, stole the show.
The Moroccan collected the ball deep inside his own half, skipped past Jake Livermore, slipped between Allan Nyom and Craig Dawson as the duo ran into each other, then curled the ball around Ahmed Hegazi and inside the far post to secure the three points in style.

Southampton 1-0 West Brom: Pellegrino hopes for turning point
Show/hide article…
Mauricio Pellegrino believes that Sofiane Boufal’s moment of magic could prove to be a vital moment in Saints’ season.
The £16m Moroccan midfielder produced a stunning goal to secure a late win over West Brom at St Mary’s, picking up the ball deep inside his own half before an incredible break forward and a magical finish.
It gave Saints only a third win of the season, and staved off a slight sinking feeling that was beginning to creep over the club.
Pellegrino acknowledged the potential importance of the individual moment of brilliance which secured well deserved win.
He said: “I think it was for sure one of the beautiful goals in this season and hopefully we can believe in more goals like this.
“This action changed the game because the game at the end was a little bit difficult but the most important thing of this game is for me we deserved to win. We were much better than them in my opinion.
“From the beginning we dominate the game, we have the ball, create chances, and a lack of effectiveness I think is something hopefully we can improve in the next few games.
“In the end with this action we are happy with that because we needed that three points and hopefully we can have more confidence in the next few games.”
Boufal’s goal was only his third for Saints since joining the club to much fanfare in 2016, and his first in ten months.
The creative talent has struggled for match time under Pellegrino, but the manager insisted Boufal is not alone in needing time to shine.
“Most of my players needs to play. All of them,” admitted the Saints boss.
“Most of them deserve to play but this is a team sport and in a team sport you have to wait for your opportunity and you have to work for that.
“I am happy for Sofiane. I am happy for my players because we needed this three points.
“Hopefully this action can change more or less and have more minutes.”
Credit must also go to Pellegrino, who confessed he felt he had to bide his time waiting for the right moment to introduce Boufal to ensure he would have the chance to be effective.
“I decide we play with this player because I thought it is the best for the team.
“Sometimes when the game is really physical like today you have to wait the moment or the environment to put this player on the pitch.
“On the ball it is really easy to plan but the difficult thing is to do it on the pitch.”

West Brom should have stopped Sofiane Boufal, says Tony Pulis
Show/hide article…
Tony Pulis was disappointed West Brom did not stop Sofiane Boufal before he scored a superb individual goal to give Southampton victory at St Mary’s.
The substitute struck the winner in the 85th minute after spinning away from two West Brom players deep inside his own half.
Boufal then ran 70 yards, skipping past Jake Livermore, slipping between Allan Nyom and Craig Dawson as the duo ran into each other, stepping around Gareth McAuley and curling the ball past Ahmed Hegazi and inside the far post.
“People will say it’s a great goal but he’s gone past four or five players,” said Pulis. “At least two of them should have done better.”
West Brom, who have now won just two of their last 18 Premier League matches, were largely on the back foot and created few chances.
However, Jay Rodriguez spurned a good opportunity on his return to St Mary’s when he was played through and fired wide with the game goalless.
“It’s disappointing,” said Pulis. "I thought in the first half they dominated possession and had a couple of good chances, but in the second half we changed it and we were much more competitive.
"We had the best chance of the game with Jay, if we score that we probably go and win the game. And then the kid scores a special goal.
“I wasn’t happy with a couple of challenges, but people will say that’s over-critical.”
Pulis was also left with injury worries over Jonny Evans and Craig Dawson, who will undergo scans on Sunday.
Evans’ groin injury will be of particular concern to Northern Ireland with the first leg of their World Cup play-off against Switzerland just 19 days away.
