Mauricio Pellegrino salutes ‘beautiful’ Sofiane Boufal strike

Show/hide article

Mauricio Pellegrino saluted a “beautiful” goal from Sofiane Boufal after he scored a superb winner for Southampton against West Brom on Saturday.

Substitute Boufal left six players in his wake, three of them on their backsides, before sliding the ball home for a truly memorable strike to secure a 1-0 victory.

“I think it was a beautiful goal, one of the most beautiful goals of this season,” said Saints boss Pellegrino.

It was going to take a moment of supreme quality to settle an otherwise drab affair, with Boufal’s strike giving Southampton their second home win of the season.

With the visitors exhibiting a lack of ambition, Southampton had to take the initiative and were rewarded with a wonder goal five minutes from time.

Boufal, who has started only one game this season and had only come on four minutes earlier, spun away from two West Brom players deep inside his own half.

He then skipped past Jake Livermore, slipped between Allan Nyom and Craig Dawson as the duo ran into each other - then stepped around Gareth McAuley and curled the ball past Ahmed Hegazi inside the far post.

“It changed the game because it was a difficult game, but the most important thing was we deserved the win,” added Pellegrino.

“We were better than them in my opinion and we dominated the game. I am happy for Sofiane.”

Boufal’s goal was only his third for Saints since joining in 2016, and he celebrated it by running in front of his manager.

“Most of my players needs to play. All of them,” said Pellegrino. ""Most of them deserve to play but this is a team sport and in a team sport you have to wait for your opportunity and you have to work for that.

“I am happy for Sofiane. I am happy for my players because we needed this three points. Hopefully this action can change more or less and have more minutes.”

Everton manager Ronald Koeman’s strongman act has turned sour

Show/hide article

After Southampton finished sixth under Ronald Koeman in 2016, other mid-sized Premier League clubs were surprised to receive overtures from several Saints players, particularly as they could not afford to pay bigger wages.

When those overtures stopped the day Koeman left St Mary’s for Everton, it became clear dressing-room discontent was down to the manager rather than money.

Everton would have known about Koeman’s demanding methods - aloof and uncommunicative were two common complaints on the south coast - when they appointed him 16 months ago.

Indeed, it was a major reason why he got the job ahead of Manuel Pellegrini. The board and senior players at Goodison wanted a boss to ruffle feathers after the softer regime of Roberto Martinez.

It is fair to say the strongman approach has not worked out so far. Everton face Arsenal at Goodison Park hovering above the bottom three having spent ÂŁ150million in the summer to break into the top four.

Six of their last eight Premier League games have ended in defeat and Koeman’s popularity within the dressing room is slipping to Southampton levels.

Whereas Martinez would let players and coaches queue up together in the canteen, Everton’s first-teamers now have to wait until Koeman and his staff are served before they get their food.

What may seem like a minor issue takes on significance when morale is at rock-bottom and players feel aggrieved at being treated like schoolkids. Koeman has always given his brother Erwin the responsibility of taking training sessions while he stands apart until a correction has to be barked out. He has variously accused the team of lacking passion, aggression and self-belief this season.

Young midfielder Tom Davies described his manager as ‘tough and demanding’. He didn’t mean it as a criticism, but others aren’t as charitable.

Trevor Steven, part of the club’s glory team of the Eighties, said: ‘The team look a mess. There doesn’t seem to be any continuity of style or selection. The players brought in haven’t settled into a team.’

Koeman usually keeps his office door shut. While he can be charming and a good listener, it doesn’t encourage players to go to him with problems. Pre-season hopes were high with 10 players, including Wayne Rooney, signed to compensate for the loss of Romelu Lukaku, but the team have lacked pace and balance with too many No 10s and no regular goalscorer.

Age-wise, Everton haven’t got enough players at their peak. Too many of the squad are either still learning - Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Davies, Davy Klaassen, Nikola Vlasic - or on the downward slope like Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and Rooney.

Those few in the ideal 25-28 age bracket have issues. Idrissa Gueye’s proposed contract remains unsigned amid interest from Arsenal, while £45million record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson hasn’t scored in nine games since a freakish goal against Hajduk Split.

Seamus Coleman, Yannick Bolasie, James McCarthy and Ross Barkley haven’t played this season because of injury. One wonders if Barkley, running down the final year of his contract, might stay if Koeman leaves.

That is a distinct possibility should Everton lose their third home game in a row this afternoon. Last Thursday’s latest defeat in the Europa League was marred by an on-pitch brawl that has seen one fan banned for life.

Koeman appears fatalistic about his predicament. ‘If the board thinks I’m not the right man, then they will tell me,’ he says. It is almost sad to see one of the great players of his generation fail to live up to his reputation as a manager.

Koeman is trying to be more empathetic. Mason Holgate, who turns 21 today, wasn’t blasted for conceding a rash penalty in the loss to Lyon last Thursday. ‘Nobody roasted me for it and that helped me a lot because I can get it out of my mind,’ he said.

Koeman needs a repeat of last season’s performance against Arsenal when a late winner from Williams completed a 2-1 comeback at Goodison in December. Otherwise the experiment of replacing a sympathetic Spaniard with a demanding Dutchman will have failed.

Pellegrino delighted with attacking intent

Show/hide article

Mauricio Pellegrino was delighted to see Saints create a host of chances against West Brom, even before Sofiane Boufal’s stunning solo goal eventually won the game five minutes from time.

Pellegrino has been determined to see his side carry a more potent threat in the final third, and saw a marked improvement as the hosts registered 20 attempts on goal at St Mary’s.

Just as the Baggies looked like hanging on for a point, substitute Boufal embarked on a one-man mission that started deep inside his own half to clinch a deserved victory.

“In the Premier League, to make this difference is not easy,” said Pellegrino of the attacking threat.

“I’m really happy because I think we deserved to win.

“We created chances and controlled the opponent until the second half when they changed to five defenders with two strikers.

“In that moment we struggled. Our reaction at the end changed the game, but I thought we deserved the goal a little bit earlier.

“We put them under pressure from the beginning, we played well and we created chances.”

Boufal: My best is still to come

Show/hide article

Sofiane Boufal insists his best is yet to come in a Southampton shirt, even after scoring a wonder goal to win his team the game against West Brom.

The Moroccan was introduced as an 81st minute substitute and took only four minutes to light up St Mary’s.

Picking up possession deep inside his own half, Boufal twisted and turned his way through a previously impenetrable Baggies defence to score a goal to remember.

“When I went past one or two players I felt confident, and the rest of it just felt natural,” he said.

“I’m so happy with this goal – for my family and all the people who have helped me in the difficult moments.

“It’s football. Sometimes you have good moments and sometimes you have bad moments, but the most important thing is to be confident in yourself.

“I hope the best is still to come. I hope this goal will help me for the future with Southampton.

“When I scored an amazing goal against Sunderland, I didn’t score for a lot of weeks after.

“I just want to think about the future and work hard. It’s very important to work harder in the difficult moments.”

WATCH: Sofiane’s Boufal’s wondergoal secures Southampton win

Show/hide article

Sofiane Boufal scored a goal-of-the-season contender to give Southampton a 1-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday.

Having only entered the game in the 81st minute, Boufal provided the match-winning moment with a superb solo effort.

The substitute ran fully 70 yards from inside his own half and left three defenders on their backsides - two of whom had collided with each other - before sliding the ball home for a truly memorable strike.

“I think it was a beautiful goal, one of the most beautiful goals of this season,” said Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

“It changed the game because it was a difficult game, but the most important thing was we deserved the win. We were better than them in my opinion and we dominated the game. I am happy for Sofiane.”

Pellegrino praises fans’ patience

Show/hide article

Saints dominated for long periods of the game against West Brom, creating a host of chances, but would have to wait until the 85th minute to make the breakthrough.

It arrived courtesy of Sofiane Boufal, introduced from the bench only four minutes earlier, whose memorable individual effort brought St Mary’s to its feet.

“I am happy because the fans were supporting us and they were patient with the team – always receiving the messages from my players on the pitch,” said Pellegrino.

“We were pushing harder towards the end, and most important for us is that we deserved to win.

“We have to go step by step. Next week we have another tough game, but hopefully this victory can help us to improve and work harder to prepare for the Brighton game.”

Pellegrino admitted his impact substitutes had given him food for thought ahead of next Sunday’s trip to Brighton, also singling out Nathan Redmond for praise.

“We thought that Nathan and Sofiane could make a difference in wide areas,” he added.

“I think a lot of them deserve to play, but football is a team sport. We have 25 players and most of them deserve to play.”
