West Brom aiming to avoid a goalkeeping crisis at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

West Brom boss Tony Pulis is hoping to avoid a goalkeeping crisis against Saints tomorrow.

Pulis faces a wait to see if either Ben Foster or Boaz Myhill will be fit to play at St Mary’s, with untested 21-year-old Alex Palmer in line for his first-team debut should both be sidelined.

Foster missed the draw at Leicester with a knee injury so Myhill made his first Premier League start since April 2016 but finished the game hobbling around with a hamstring problem.

Both players trained yesterday and it is hoped they will do so again today before the squad travel to the south coast.

“We’ve had scans back and Ben trained yesterday while Boaz trained and did a little bit yesterday as well,” said Pulis.

"They’ll do a little bit more today and we hope one of them will be fit to start, but we don’t know which one.

“It’s going to be a big 48 hours for us as a team and as a club in respect of the two senior goalkeepers, although it’s brighter than it was after the game on Monday.”

Foster’s injury, which he suffered while playing in the garden with his children during the international break, is of particular concern to West Brom given his history with knee problems.

The 34-year-old has had three knee operations during his career, the latest of which ruled him out for 10 months between 2015 and 2016.

“I’ve been in the game a long time and seen people pick up injuries in training, but I’ve also known people pick up injuries from other things,” said Pulis.

"Sometimes it’s the silliest thing that can happen to injure these players. We were very disappointed at the time because I think Ben is one of the best keepers in the Premier League, without a question of a doubt.

“You never know with that knee injury. He’s had a scan and I think the specialist has said he’s got to get on with it, so hopefully he gets on with it and nothing happens.”

Should neither Foster or Myhill make it, academy product Palmer will be handed the gloves. His only first-team experience to date came during a couple of loan spells at Kidderminster.

“He hasn’t played any league football. Everyone has to start somewhere but it would be very difficult for him to start in the Premier League because it is what it is,” said Pulis, who is still unable to call on James Morrison, Oliver Burke and Hal Robson-Kanu due to muscle injuries.

Southampton v West Brom preview: Baggies hopeful over goalkeeper fitness

Show/hide article…

West Brom are hoping to have a fit first-team goalkeeper when they travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ben Foster missed the draw at Leicester with a knee injury so Boaz Myhill made his first Premier League start since April 2016, but finished the game hobbling around with a hamstring problem.

However, Tony Pulis said he hopes “one of them will be fit enough to start but I don’t know which one” after they took part in training on Thursday and race against the clock to be included.

The Baggies sit one point and place ahead of Southampton in the Premier League table, who drew 2-2 with Newcastle last time out.

Alongside doubts over Foster and Myhill for West Brom, James Morrison, Oliver Burke and Hal Robson-Kanu are certain absentees with muscle injuries.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino reported no fresh injury concerns ahead of the game, with Manolo Gabbiadini hoping to retain his place in attack after scoring both goals last weekend.

Full-back Jeremy Pied continues to work his way back to full fitness from a groin injury.

Saints have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Brom, as many as they had in their previous nine against them in the competition.

After a winless run of 19 games in all competitions at Southampton, the Baggies have won two of their last five away games against the Saints (D1 L2).

Of all teams to have met in at least seven different Premier League campaigns, Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion has the lowest goals-per-game ratio in the competition (21 in 14 games - 1.5 per game).

Southampton have conceded a league-high ratio 33% of their Premier League goals from outside the box this season (3/9).

Southampton have drawn a blank in nine Premier League home games so far in 2017, only three Premier League sides have failed to score in more home matches in a calendar year (Portsmouth; 11 in 2007, Fulham 10; in 2002 and Manchester City; 10 in 1995).

West Bromwich Albion have now scored 47 set-piece goals (excl. penalties) in the Premier League since Tony Pulis took charge of the club, more than any other side.

I’m going for a goalless draw. West Brom are really hard to beat, and Southampton just don’t score many goals. West Brom will play a certain way, and I don’t think the home side will break them down.

I think Southampton are really in-between at the moment, and I think Mauricio Pellegrino could find himself under pressure soon. Saints fans want more.

West Brom are 4/1 to end their six-game winless run at Southampton, with the hosts odds-on favourites with Sky Bet at 3/4 while the draw is priced at 23/10. Manolo Gabbiadini is favourite to break the deadlock at 4/1 and 17/2 for another brace, with three visiting players tied at 8/1 to be first goal-scorer. One of those is former Saints striker Jay Rodriguez, who is alongside Salomon Rondon and Hal Robson-Kanu.

Premier League clubs ranked for transfer fees spent on players used this season

West Ham host Brighton on Friday live on Sky Sports with both clubs locked on eight points - but there is a huge disparity between the teams’ values.

Both clubs have won two games, drawn two and lost five in the league this season - but Brighton occupy 14th spot ahead of West Ham on goal difference.

However, the Seagulls are the Premier League’s second-cheapest team, fielding players with transfer fees totalling £58.7m, while West Ham’s total is two and a half times greater at £145.4m.

Brighton’s most expensive players include Jose Izquierdo (£16m), Davy Propper (£11.7m) Mathew Ryan (£6m), Shane Duffy (£4m), Markus Suttner (£3.8m), Anthony Knockaert (£3.15m) Glenn Murray and Pascal Gross (both £3m).

Three Manchester United players are among the top four most expensive, including Paul Pogba (£93.25m), Romelu Lukaku (£90m) and Anthony Martial (£57.6m), but it’s Manchester City who have the most expensive team overall.

City have spent £652.6m - nearly 11 times more than Brighton - on the players they’ve used so far, followed by neighbours United (£573.4m), Chelsea (£430.1m), Liverpool (£298.5), Arsenal (£296.7m) and Tottenham (£243.7m).

The big six clubs are followed by struggling trio Everton (£225.6m), Crystal Palace (£165.1m) and Southampton (£148.7m).

At the other end of the scale, Huddersfield are the cheapest team with £50m of talent fielded to date, while, in addition to Brighton, Burnley (£73.5m), Bournemouth (£81.1m), Swansea (£89.9m), Stoke (£92.2m), Watford (£99.3m) and West Brom (£102.5m) all have cheaper teams that newly-promoted Newcastle (£121.6m).

In terms of punching above financial weight, Burnley (+11) and Watford (+10) are overachieving in the league table, based on their line-up value.

In contrast, rock-bottom Crystal Palace are 12 places below their line-up rank, while Everton have the seventh most expensive line-up but sit nine places lower in league table.

PHOTOS: Here’s a sneak peek at Southampton Common’s £500,000 play park - and it’s opening this weekend

Show/hide article…

A NEW £500,000 Southampton play area is to be unveiled this weekend.

Saints legend Francis Benali, inset, is set to cut the ribbon after the opening of the park had been delayed by bad weather in the summer.

The new facilities have been developed by Southampton City Council, with designers listening to residents, schools and community groups on how they wanted the space to be used.

Featuring a 7.5-metre high play tower with rope bridges, tunnels and a slide, it also has a variety of swings and a water area that will run all year round.

The park, which can hold 700 children, will open on Sunday.

City councillor for environment and transport, Jacqui Rayment, will also help to open the equipment to the public. She said: “An investment in our play areas and outdoor spaces is an investment in our children’s future.

“Providing great spaces for kids to get outdoors and for families to get active together is incredibly important and contributes to a child’s healthy development both physically and mentally.

“I’m sure that many special memories will be made here in the years to come.”

The space was supposed to open at the end of August in time for the close of the school summer holidays.

Cllr Rayment said that on one week, no work could be done due to the site becoming waterlogged.

Former Saints star Benali will cut the ribbon on Sunday at midday.

He said: “It gives me great pleasure to cut the ribbon at the ceremony.

“As a young boy growing up I spent endless hours playing on The Common and have so many special memories.

“I’m delighted that future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy this area and create their own happy memories.”

The main attraction of the park will be the ‘tree nest’ play area, with around 360 tonnes of sand used at the park, which will be able to hold up to 700 children.

Man City v Burnley best odds, plus Premier League betting tips

Show/hide article…

We’ve had a couple of high-fives, the joy of six and last week the magnificent seven as the Premier League’s headline act Manchester City steamrollers on.

City are lighting up the top flight, where they’re now 2/5 favourites for the crown, and bossing it on the continent with the best goal difference across the five big leagues, three wins from three in European competition and sitting behind only Real Madrid and PSG in the betting for the Champions League.

So, can anyone stop them?

It’s Burnley’s turn to try but they head to the Etihad knowing City’s last three opponents there have been thumped by a five-goal margin.

Burnley have saved their best for the big teams – they’ve beaten Chelsea and drawn with Tottenham and Liverpool – but, right now, City are on another level and are no better than 1/8 for an 11th straight win in all competitions.

Last week, 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 were popular picks in the correct-score betting… and then they went and hammered Stoke 7-2.

The Clarets haven’t been conceding many in their climb to seventh place, six in eight games and only once, in the 3-2 win at Chelsea, have they leaked more than one.

But, and it’s worth repeating, City are on a different level. Pep Guardiola’s side to win by four goals or more is 2/1 but a better bet at the same price is Gabriel Jesus (three in his last two games) and Raheem Sterling (five in five) both to score. Or how about Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne – the Belgian who set up five of the seven against Stoke without claiming one for himself. That double is 11/4. For another goal rush, Betway are offering 9/1 they score seven or more this weekend.

It’s a Friday night kick-off for the ninth round of top-flight fixtures with West Ham hosting Brighton at the London Stadium before Saturday’s early game sees Chelsea take on Watford at Stamford Bridge.

At 4/11, we won’t be piling in to a Chelsea side who lost to Crystal Palace, let a two-goal lead slip at home to Roma and are struggling with their injury list. Watford, who leapfrogged the Blues in the table with a gutsy win over Arsenal, may have a few friends at 10/1 to win or 13/2 - draw no bet. To win with both teams scoring it’s, 2/1 Chelsea, 16/1 Watford and any score draw can be backed at 6/1.

Chelsea fans might be slightly concerned with recent results but they’ll expect things to take a turn for the better sooner rather than later. Huddersfield supporters are less likely to be optimistic.

The promoted side are slipping fast with just three points bagged from a possible 18 since winning their first two matches and it’s Manchester United up next.

United boss Jose Mourinho is bristling (again) and telling anyone who’ll listen that being good at defending is not a crime. No, Jose, it’s not, but parking the bus is somewhat frowned upon.

To be fair to Mourinho, his critics, and there are many, have quickly forgotten his collection of four-goal hauls and the fact his side had scored at least twice in nine of 11 games before stinking out Anfield last weekend.

It should be a different story this weekend and he’ll probably get away with parking a small scooter in front of David de Gea against a side who have scored just once since the end of August.

United are 2/5 but 11/10 to win minus one goal on the handicap.

Newcastle can bring the the Eagles back down with a bump – providing they can shackle Wilfried Zaha at St James’ Park. A home win with both teams scoring is 7/2 but if you’re looking for a bet on the visitors, fit-again winger Zaha is available at 4/1 to score at any time.

Stoke against Bournemouth has the look of a draw while Swansea host managerless Leicester and Southampton vs West Brom is Saturday’s late game.

There’s a sprinkling of Hollywood about Sunday’s early match as Everton face Arsenal just days after the 15th anniversary of Wayne Rooney scoring THAT goal at Goodison.

How his boss Ronald Koeman could do with one of those. Rooney is 5/2 to score at any time against the Gunners after being rested for the midweek Europa League tie with Lyon where a 2-1 defeat saw Koeman trimmed to 1/6 to be the next Premier League boss to lose his job.

After the action on Merseyside, Spurs and Liverpool wrap up the weekend and strange things were happening to the pair of them during their European adventures in midweek.

Harry Kane failed to score for the second game in a row – although he did have a hand in their goal against Real Madrid – and Liverpool finally started to take their chances (seven of them against Maribor).

But it was ‘only’ Maribor and we’re leaning towards Spurs in this one. Five wins on the spin before holding Real in the Bernabeu compared with Liverpool’s three straight draws (Spartak Moscow, Newcastle and United) ahead of their Maribor mauling.

Spurs are 6/5 for the points, 16/5 to win by one goal and 11/2 to win by two.

Claude Puel emerges as shock contender for Leicester job

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has emerged as a shock contender for the Leicester City job with the club expected to speak to the former Southampton manager.

Leicester this week sacked Craig Shakespeare with no immediate replacement lined up and Michael Appleton stepping in on a caretaker basis.

Director of football Jon Rudkin is now leading the process to find Shakespeare’s full-time successor and is likely to speak to a number of potential candidates.

One of those is Puel, who was sacked by Southampton in June after leading the club to the League Cup final and an eighth-place Premier League finish.

The Saints’ decision to replace Puel was viewed as being harsh in many quarters, although his style of football was criticised by the club’s fans and he was accused of being unpopular with certain members of the playing squad.

Opposition View: West Brom

Show/hide article…

Tony Pulis is hoping to see Jay Rodriguez relax and enjoy the occasion when he returns to St Mary’s for the first time since his summer departure to West Brom.

The former Saints man has started every Premier League game for the Baggies, scoring one goal against Stoke City in August.

Rodriguez spent five years on the South Coast and his new boss is well aware that emotions will be stirred on his return.

"Jay will get a great reception,” said Pulis.

"He had a great time down at Southampton and we were fortunate to get a deal done for him.

"He had a couple of poor injuries there at the end and that probably stopped his progress.

"But he’s moved on, he’s enjoying it here and is popular in the dressing room.

“I want him to relax and enjoy it tomorrow.”

jay will get a great reception. he had a great time down at southampton and we were fortunate to get a deal done for him.

Pulis believes Saints have looked “uptight” on home soil and is determined to take advantage.

"They’re a good footballing team,” he added.

"Pellegrino has come in with his own ideas and the way he wants to play.

"From watching them in a couple of games away from St Mary’s they seem a little more relaxed. They look a little more uptight at home.

“But I’m sure they’ll become the team everyone knows they can be.”

Butterfield looking for a response against Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Chelsea are the visitors to the south coast in tomorrow’s U18s Premier League clash, and Danny Butterfield is confident that the young players returning from various injury lay-offs will help boost his side’s chances.

“Hopefully we have a few bodies returning from injury, which will aid team selection,” he began.

"I think the lads are still relatively confident, it was a heavy defeat [against Arsenal] but I don’t think the scoreline was reflective of the actual performance.

“We were really pleased with the first half, we were on top and controlled possession. But we still aren’t converting enough opportunities in to goals.”

Despite the unfavourable scoreline last time out, ex-Saints defender Butterfield believes his side have learned valuable lessons, and is keen for his young charges to respond positively against Chelsea.

"The confidence hasn’t been dented too much providing there is a response this Saturday against Chelsea. There are things to work on, but we’re in a relatively buoyant mood on the back of previous performances.

“Chelsea are always a very athletic and powerful team, with individuals capable of winning games. But we’ll concentrate on ourselves and our ability to counteract their strengths.”

Southampton v West Brom: Team news, kick-off time, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Stoke’s home clash with Bournemouth.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino reported no fresh injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against West Brom.

Italian forward Manolo Gabbiadini will be hoping to retain his place in attack after scoring both goals in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

Full-back Jeremy Pied continues to work his way back to full fitness from a groin injury.

West Brom are hopeful either Ben Foster or Boaz Myhill will be fit to keep goal against Southampton at St Mary’s.

Foster missed the draw at Leicester with a knee injury so Myhill made his first Premier League start since April 2016 but finished the game hobbling around with a hamstring problem.

Both players trained on Thursday and it is hoped they will do so again on Friday before the squad travel to the south coast. James Morrison, Oliver Burke and Hal Robson-Kanu remain out with muscle injuries.

Saints have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Brom, as many as they had in their previous nine against them in the competition.

After a winless run of 19 games in all competitions at Southampton, the Baggies have won two of their last five away games against the Saints (D1 L2).

West Bromwich Albion have now scored 47 set-piece goals (excl. penalties) in the Premier League since Tony Pulis took charge of the club, more than any other side.

Of Tony Pulis’ 102 Premier League games in charge of West Brom, only 10 of these have seen the Baggies have more possession than their opponents. 60 of these games have seen WBA hold less than 40% of possession.

19 different players have made a Premier League appearance this season aged 34 or older; four of which have been for WBA – Ben Foster, Boaz Myhill, Gareth Barry & Gareth McAuley. No other side handed appearances to more than two players aged 34 or older this season.

Dusan Tadic has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last three Premier League appearances against West Brom (one goal, two assists).

Manolo Gabbiadini scored with both of his shots against Newcastle United on MD8 – his previous two goals in the competition came over a period of 16 appearances and 27 shots.
