Saints star Nathan Redmond to donate money to children’s charity for every goal he scores

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond is desperate to add to goal-shy Saints’ strike rate to raise money for charity.

The forward will donate cash for every goal and assist he gets this season to children’s charity Right To Play.

Saints have netted just seven times in eight Premier League games so far - and three of them were penalties - with Redmond yet to score.

But he has grabbed two assists - including one to set up Manolo Gabbiadini in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle. That is actually one more assist than he managed in the whole of last season, when he also finished as Saints’ leading league marksman with seven strikes.

Redmond became a Right To Play ambassador over the summer and the England international is keen to do everything he can to help.

“It’s something I felt was right to do and I was very happy to do. With every goal and every assist I make a donation which goes straight to them,” he told Press Association Sport.

"One donation will help 33 children so that’s a massive difference from one goal or an assist.

"The more I do on the pitch I know subconsciously it’s helping out the kids. I’ve had two assists this season and no goals yet but I’m sure they’ll be coming.

"Afterwards when the game’s finished, instantly you think about that. I’ve had two assists this season and that’s over 60 kids helped. I’m delighted with that so far.

“I’m with the message Right To Play are putting forward which is to give disadvantaged kids over the world the chance to get involved in sport and to get an education. I want to push that message out there.”

Redmond, 23, follows Manchester United’s Juan Mata, who is donating a minimum of one per cent of his salary this season to charity Common Goal.

Right To Play uses sport to educate and help children in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities.

Redmond would have liked to have donated more but Southampton’s goal struggles, they failed to score in six of their first seven games in all competitions this season, have not helped.

The Saints are still just four points behind the top five and sit 11th ahead of tomorrow’s visit of West Brom.

“Every player and team will always go through a sticky period, that’s not something to shy away from,” said Redmond.

"I’m not worried about anything, it would only be if I’m not in those areas to score goals.

“It’s not crisis but when you’re looking at the start we’ve had and the teams we’ve played we feel we should have picked up more points.”

Jaïdi: We’ve set the bar high

Show/hide article…

Carrow Road will host the Premier League 2 tie - Saints’ second stadium fixture in the space of five days - where a win has the potential to propel Jaïdi’s side in to second spot in the league standings.

Talking about refocussing the players after a quick turnaround of fixtures, the Under-23s boss said: "It shouldn’t be difficult, if you are succeeding and doing the right things, meeting the requirements, then you try to keep yourself at that level.

"With the younger boys, the concentration needs more work, that is my role. I raise the point and try to keep their concentration levels right.

"We set the bar really high [against Newcastle], we scored six goals and we dealt with the game’s different situations. We had down periods, but we picked up straight away so hopefully we keep the momentum going, scoring goals and playing well.

“The preparation [for Norwich] started the minute we finished the Monday game. Yesterday we trained in preparation for the game, we’re focussed on the opponent and applying our prep.”

Pellegrino: Let’s start the way we finished

Show/hide article…

Saints twice trailed last weekend, but drew level on both occasions before pushing for a late winner.

The response of his players pleased Pellegrino, but the manager admits there is a balance to be struck in being too adventurous too early in a game against well-drilled opponents.

“The reaction of the team was really good, but we have to start from the beginning with this spirit,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to be patient, because at the beginning teams have more energy, they are fresher and they can press you better.

“I think we feel comfortable with the ball. If we are precise with the ball and with our tempo, we can create more problems – it doesn’t matter who we are playing.

“We know that West Brom are really strong physically, and dangerous from set plays and on the counter-attack.

“That’s something we’ve been working on this week. Every single week we are learning from our last few games, and I feel that my players are better prepared.”

Transfer news: Southampton to launch fresh bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly

Show/hide article…

Southampton could return for Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly in January after missing out on him in the summer.

The Senegal international has been one of the best defenders in Italy over the past 18 months and he is being chased by several clubs.

Chelsea and Everton are interested in the centre-back, while more recently Barcelona have been linked with a move.

And now, according to Calciomercato, Southampton could also try and swoop for Koulibaly in January.

It is reported that the Saints failed with a summer approach for the 26-year-old after lining him up as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Plenty of clubs, including Liverpool, still want Van Dijk and Southampton may go for Koulibaly as a result.

Match Preview: Saints vs West Brom

Show/hide article…

Get ready for the Premier League meeting between Southampton and West Brom at St Mary’s with our in-depth match preview.

THE MATCH

Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion

Saturday 21st October, 5.30pm BST

St Mary’s

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Tenth meets eleventh at St.Mary’s on Saturday evening with both sides in need of a win to claim a spot in the top half of the Premier League and break away from the tightly-packed chasing group below.

Saints and West Brom have identical scoring records so far – seven scored, nine conceded – though the Baggies sit one point ahead of their hosts this weekend.

Two moments of individual inspiration earned points for both teams last time out; Manolo Gabbiadini clinically struck twice in 26 second-half minutes to deny Newcastle while Nacer Chadli’s superb free-kick saw Tony Pulis’ men draw 1-1 at Leicester on Monday night.

Southampton have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Brom, Jordy Clasie scoring the only goal in April’s meeting at the Hawthorns.

TEAM NEWS

There are no fresh injury concerns for Mauricio Pellegrino ahead of this weekend’s encounter, with Jérémy Pied the only likely absentee.

Opposite number Tony Pulis however is set to be without Hal Robson-Kanu, Oliver Burke and James Morrison while late calls will be made on goalkeepers Ben Foster and Boaz Myhill.

ONE TO WATCH

The Baggies earned praise for their shrewd business in the summer, recruiting the likes of Saints’ Jay Rodriguez, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Gareth Barry, Oliver Burke and Kieran Gibbs.

Of the new signings, Pole Krychowiak has arguably made the most impressive to life in the Midlands since joining on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

The midfielder’s physicality, defensive work rate and range of passing have given Tony Pulis’ side invaluable stability in the middle of the field.

The battle between Krychowiak and Southampton’s Mario Lemina should be an intriguing one.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tony Pulis’ recipe for success in the English top-flight is well known yet notoriously difficult to prevent.

Of the Welshman’s 102 Premier League games in charge of West Brom, only 10 of these have seen the Baggies have more possession than their opponents. Remarkably, 60 of these games have seen WBA hold less than 40% of possession.

In that time, the Midlands club have also scored more goals from set-pieces (47) than any other team.

Tony Pulis optimistic on goalkeeping crisis for visit to Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Brom boss Tony Pulis is hoping to avoid a goalkeeping crisis against Southampton on Saturday.

Pulis faces a wait to see if either Ben Foster or Boaz Myhill will be fit to play at St Mary’s, with untested 21-year-old Alex Palmer in line for his first-team debut should both be sidelined.

Foster missed the draw at Leicester with a knee injury so Myhill made his first Premier League start since April 2016 but finished the game hobbling around with a hamstring problem.

Both players trained on Thursday and it is hoped they will do so again on Friday before the squad travel to the south coast.

‘We’ve had scans back and Ben trained yesterday [Thursday] while Boaz trained and did a little bit yesterday as well,’ said Pulis.

'They’ll do a little bit more today [Friday] and we hope one of them will be fit to start, but we don’t know which one.

‘It’s going to be a big 48 hours for us as a team and as a club in respect of the two senior goalkeepers, although it’s brighter than it was after the game on Monday.’

Foster’s injury, which he suffered while playing in the garden with his children during the international break, is of particular concern to West Brom given his history with knee problems.

The 34-year-old has had three knee operations during his career, the latest of which ruled him out for 10 months between 2015 and 2016.

Pulis added: 'I’ve been in the game a long time and seen people pick up injuries in training, but I’ve also known people pick up injuries from other things.

'Sometimes it’s the silliest thing that can happen to injure these players. We were very disappointed at the time because I think Ben is one of the best keepers in the Premier League, without a question of a doubt.

‘You never know with that knee injury. He’s had a scan and I think the specialist has said he’s got to get on with it, so hopefully he gets on with it and nothing happens.’

Should neither Foster or Myhill make it, academy product Palmer will be handed the gloves. His only first-team experience to date came during a couple of loan spells at Kidderminster.

‘He hasn’t played any league football. Everyone has to start somewhere but it would be very difficult for him to start in the Premier League because it is what it is,’ said Pulis, who is still unable to call on James Morrison, Oliver Burke and Hal Robson-Kanu due to muscle injuries.
