Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool arrive at Anfield - EIGHT HOURS before kick-off

Show/hide article…

The Liverpool squad have arrived an Anfield EIGHT hours prior to kick-off in their crunch cup semi-final.

Jurgen Klopp ordered his side to the stadium during Wednesday morning as they prepare to try and overturn the one-goal deficit from the first leg vs Southampton.

The players arrived at Anfield separately in their own vehicles, before being whisked off to a local hotel on a team coach for the next stage of their preparation.

Manager Klopp appeared in high spirits ahead of the fixture, as he looks to reach the EFL Cup final for the second time in his Liverpool career.

The players locked up their cars and dumped their kit bags in the coach’s luggage compartment before boarding and heading off.

Klopp will likely spend the rest of the afternoon with the players running over the tactics for the evening fixture, picking apart what went wrong in the first leg.

Liverpool have already been buoyed by the news of Philippe Coutinho’s new contract at the club.

Speaking to LFC TV after signing his new deal, Coutinho said: "I just want to thank everyone because when I arrived everyone was like a family for me.

"And I’m very happy to sign for a few more years here - I feel at home.

“I hope to repay everything on the pitch.”

Liverpool also have Joel Matip back available for action after the Reds’ dispute over his refusal to play for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He is now fully fit after playing an hour for the Under-23s on Sunday.

Matip was on the bench for the game with Swansea this weekend but was only used in the latter stages.

And Klopp explained his decision: "The problem was we have training and I have to prepare a team.

"Between the two games [against Plymouth and Swansea] we had two sessions to prepare for this game properly and he was not involved because I couldn’t expect that I can use him.

“I was concentrating on the players I could use.”

Can Saints defy the stats and keep Liverpool from scoring?

Show/hide article…

SAINTS will progress to only their fifth ever Wembley cup final tonight if they can stop Liverpool from scoring.

That is easier said than done.

In their last 27 home league and cup games, the Reds have only failed to score in three of them.

And two of those matches were when Jurgen Klopp fielded below-strength XIs in goalless FA Cup ties with West Ham and Plymouth.

When Klopp has fielded a strong side, the Reds have always scored - the sole exception being when Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United parked the bus at Anfield in a league game last October.

Prior to Swansea’s shock 3-2 success last weekend, Liverpool had gone 26 home games without a defeat.

They had won 17 of them and drawn nine.

Here is some bad news for Saints - Liverpool have scored 64 goals in 29 games in 2016/17.

They scored more in their first 14 games of the season than Saints have managed in 33 matches.

Claude Puel’s side have only scored 37 goals in all competitions.

Liverpool scored 40 in their first 14 matches - and eight of those games were away!

Saints have failed to score in a third of their games so far - 11 times in 33 matches.

Here is some good news for Saints - Liverpool have only failed to score five times in 29 games this term, but two of those occasions were against Puel’s men.

Saints could obviously do with an away goal tonight, but there haven’t been many of those in recent weeks.

Puel’s side have only scored nine away league goals in 11 games. Only five clubs have scored fewer - Leicester(8), Middlesbrough (8), Hull (6), Sunderland (6) and Burnley (4).

Saints have failed to score at Manchester United, Leicester, Crystal Palace, Stoke, Everton and Burnley in the league. hey have only netted in one of their last five away league games - at Bournemouth on December 18.

“We’ll have the full story as the battle for the title heads towards its final stretch; will all six clubs still be in contention by April? You’ll find out on Sky Sports.”

The month begins at Old Trafford, as Jose Mourinho’s resurgent Man Utd host Bournemouth. Following that, it’s a Super Sunday double-header, as Tottenham look to pile the pressure on at the top as they face Everton, before Manchester City look for three points at relegation-battling Sunderland.

Then, Chelsea will look to respond on Monday Night Football as they face West Ham United in a derby from the London Stadium.

The following weekend, fans can see Arsenal again, as they make the trip to West Brom, before Tottenham host Southampton at White Hart Lane.

Then, March finishes in style, with a massive head-to-head from the Etihad Stadium on Super Sunday, as Pep Guardiola’s Man City City host Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in a match that could be pivotal in the title race.
